I find it curious how the people behind this movie spent all their energy trying to make a “girl power” movie that they completely neglected the fact that they wrote the most racist black character in recent memory. It’s absolutely bizarre.
How was it a racist portrayal when black characters were literally like Patricia Tolan in various classic sitcoms and movies featuring black characters? It's NOT racist to write her like that if you prefer to see black characters that are always uptight or bougie like. Something we see a lot in our culture as well in more conservative-driven content like the Tyler Perry and Spike Lee movies.

The "Ain't no bitches gonna hunt no ghosts" in-movie RUclips comment was probably the funniest joke in the entire movie. I think it was the only one to get a genuine laugh out of me
The Ghostbusters catch only one single ghost in the entire movie and they don't even get paid for it. The main joke of the original movie is that dealing with the supernatural is a regular job.
They also ostensibly killed Bill Murray with said ghost and face no repercussions even though they knew how dangerous the dragon ghost was to civilians. Role models.
THANK YOU The main gag of the franchise is that these are just regular exterminators but for ghosts instead of bugs, the original movie had a montage of them doing their job and expanding the business overtime, they had commercials and discounts, they acted professionaly even in their first official job Those 4 girls could not pass as professional even if they say it to your face,at most they seem like part timers doing a prank
Makai Ridah The movie even has a scene with a bystander asking what is up with the equipment and Venkman just answers that somebody saw a cockroach, because he does not feel like explaining it, or because Venkman just loves messing with people.
No, they killed off Bill Murray because he was contractually obligated to be in it and that was the most he was willing* to do. Edit: *by that I mean contractually obligated to do under threat of legal action if he didn't.
@@Lobsterwithinternet I don't believe that's true. The fact that they had one of woman say "he was never a real ghost buster anyway" or whatever they said after he died definitely feels like stab at the originals and fans. I think it's very safe to assume the worst.

Winston was also the realist heart of the group & the voice of the audience. He was the guy who was there to say "this is a bad idea" and act as a cynical foil for the other three who had been close for some time & were mad about ghosts. He was just in it initially for the paycheck and eventually comes round to accepting the responsibility for saving the world (because they were the only guys equipped & able to do it). Patti is just the voice, not of the audience, just the loudest voice (in the already VERY loud room).
Venkman was 100% using his paranormal research as a con, an easy way to make money off fools. I don’t think he actually believed in ghosts until he saw the one in the library. He’s very similar to Winston in every way you mentioned.
I really respected the James Rolfe response, and I'm glad you included mention of that. He just made a level-headed statement that he wasn't interested in watching the film. Seems fair to me, and I don't get why it received such ire.

Like another comment said, James represented the target they wanted to attack and dared to go against the narrative which gave them an opening, no matter how petty or silly it looked. He was a straight white man who dared to voice hesitation about paying to see the holy sainted leftist corporate product, so he became a proxy for the "manbabies" they were already lashing out at. Notice the article screencapped earlier in the review where they also did their best to tie the backlash to the alt-right, because that was another boogeyman they could attack instead of addressing real people.
How I would have fixed Kevin's character is that I would have made it so that the reason he acts so idiotic is that he was possessed the entire time by an idiotic ghost. This is only revealed when Roan possesses Kevin and forces the stupid ghost out. In the end, Kevin staggers off confused and the dumb ghost goes on to stay at the firehouse as their receptionist. There I put more creative thought in this dumpster fire of a movie than the dumb bitches who actually wrote it. And I can say this because I'm a woman.
Was going to ask "how'd he get possessed by the initial idiot ghost?" But gave up, because I was just happy some creative thought was put into this story.

To further the Winston Patty slam dunk, Winston was answering a help wanted ad in the news paper, and showcased in several scenes that he wasn't an idiot. Even though Egon boiled down his explanation using a Twinky as his example, Winston got what the man was saying and added a fun quip in a smooth laid back manner. Then later while speaking with Ray, he carried the conversation diving into mysticism and Christian spiritualism. On top of that, he picks up on how to use the gear rather quickly, all things considered. Which one can infer he's had past experience operating similar machinery in terms of upper body strength, weight, mobility, endurance, stamina, etc. He doesn't scream or react in horror when faced with confirmation than ghosts, gods, and demons exist. Comparatively, he's the coolest headed character.... What does Patty do? Scream, run away, be obnoxious, slap one of her possessed friends while delivering exceptionally corny dated puns.... Oh, she manages to get the crew a car to ride around and go on missions in, so that's cool.... Yeah, Patty sucks ass, and is less progressive as the token Black stereotype than a movie made in an era that allowed for movies like 48hrs to exist. lol
The character of Winston was originally written as an older army veteran played by Eddie Murphy, but they rewrote the character to be more of an every man that the audience could identify with when Murphy turned down the role.
Winston was an example of not needing to be a genius with a doctorate to work with the Ghostbusters and be a friend and equal partner. He wasn't as smart as them but was never belittled for this. If anything the films should be lauded for their good treatment of a black man as just a guy who doesn't need to prove himself to be acknowledged by his white co-woekers, much like how Extreme had a main character who did busting from a wheelchair but wasn't defined by his disability.
I never thought Winston was supposed to be portrayed as uneducated or stupid (unlike how they have Leslie Jones debasing herself in the reboot). I think he was just supposed to be an everyman audience surrogate who regularly points out the ridiculous and insane things going on around him. Ray and Egon are the weird ones, with one being the almost sociopathic straight man and the other being the childish pushover. They were all written to play off each other, with everyone filling in their own place on the team dynamic. Winston is the one who comments in the way that they think the audience would be thinking. Venkman is also like this, to a point, but they wrote him as a bit too smarmy and charming to be a regular guy, so rather than saying the obvious thing, he says the quippy, funny, clever thing.
The only time Winston's color matters is that one, single line: "I have seen SH** that would turn you WHITE." I crack up laughing every single time, simply because the mayor's "wait, what?" reaction is priceless.
I don't recall seeing Ernie in anything before Ghostbusters, and of course I saw him in The Crow afterward. I always thought he did a great job of playing his character.

what's worse is that a cartoon succeeded where Sony failed. Extreme Ghost Busters or as it is called by fans "Ghost Busters Dark" had a new team that was ACTUALLY inclusive with a female ghost buster Kylie (hell Janine had her moments two so,, 2 female Ghost busters technically) it also had race rep with Rolland Jackson and a handy capped (wheelchair bound) character Garret Miller the last guy being the sarcastic Eduardo Rivera ...oh and Slimer is there too. additionally they had Egon Spengler as a mentor (and Janine was around as well if I recall correctly) the show was pretty darn good. there was even a multi part special where the OG Ghostbusters reunited for awhile. unfortunately whoever ran the networks it was on were idiots and only a few episodes were released on DVD .. in France I think ... buuut If ya wanna watch the show now ya can still find it online with enough searching. also I'd like to point out the fact there was a Girl, an African American and a Paraplegic on the team wasn't the point of their characters. each had there own virtues and flaws. the fact Kylie was a girl never really came up other then Eduardo flirting with her and getting shot down she is a fan of Egon and reads his books she is the ghost expert of her peers. As for Garret him being in a Wheelchair hardly ever impacted him as a Ghost buster and he is one of the more athletic characters and a cheerful wiseguy , And Roland" well he is Black so what? its never mentioned much less impacts the story. he is just another person and he is the new tech guy working on new devices with Egon himself . As for Eduardo.. well he is the everyman and that suits him just fine. THIS is how ya do inclusive representation you make a character give them which ever trait BUT here's the catch ya don't make their entire character revolve around that single trait ys treat everyone equally and as if there is no difference between anyone. that's what was done here and hells I don't even think the Writers were THINKING about any of this it just happened in retrospect. they just wanted to make unique characters with Diverse looks and personalities and they more then succeeded in that. (I never really thought about this myself until I started watching this review and realized how screwed up the 'reboot' is ) Soooo... yeah Sony has no excuse -_-

What Sony never saw was that "female" doesn't automatically mean funny or interesting. Equality means that your movie might suck without a reference to the casts genitals. There is no "girl power" element that magically makes something better. Exchange the cast with the best and most beloved actors in their prime and it would still suck.
Truth be told, a better cast might have faired a bit better. I don't know why people feel the need to say that the cast is good. They are dreadfully grating. This movie's biggest mistake is that it's missing charm. If something is charming, you will overlook certain things. You wouldn't think 'how did nobody see the villain's secret chamber' or 'the special effects are pretty bad.' Without a good reason to like it, the flaws become much more obvious. A bad joke from someone you like might still make you laugh, while it only makes you groan from someone else.

I think another thing that hurts Ghostbusters 2016 is the fact that every character in the team is trying to be a Venkman and all that does is turn the movie into an adlib shitshow where everyone is trying be more clever than their costars. Part of what makes the original team works so good is each person brought something different to the table. Venkman was the snarky one, Egon was the brilliant dry guy, Ray was the bright eye'd optimist and Winston was the grounded blue collar everyman. The different personalities playing off of each other created a fun dynamic that works so well. The problem with the 2016 is you have four characters playing the same character and it loses not only it's focus but it sucks the personality out of the team. Each girl is trying to mirror a character from the movie but in the end all they're doing is trying to be Venkman and It sucks.
Worse, all those characters in the "remake" are basically trying to be (cringeworthy) comic relief. Previously, the only movies I had ever seen where _every_ main character (all protagonists and most of the antagonists as well) were lame comic relief were the first three _Transformers movies._
This is the best criticism of the movie I've read - and it's true. The fact that I enjoyed the dumb movie about idiots chasing ghosts, who suddenly have to avert a ghost apocalypse despite being incompetent (that's a big part of the movie's premise - it's not in the original), doesn't change the fact that the characterisation was spoiled by being an improv-off.
My biggest problem with GB(2016) is that for every joke that got a chuckle out of me it was immediately followed by several jokes that made me want to become a ghost myself.

It would've been a good idea to have Gertrude work with Rowan, seeing how they built up her character to be this psychopathic woman. And in a way, I feel like those two could have been kindred spirits with the same motivations.
I had an idea where Rowan is deceived by Gertrude, to open the door in order to free her for a sequel, and the immediate threat being the ghost unleased onto the city.
The problem with making every male character a vile stereotype is that you can't identify with any of them. There is a lot of pink in this film. Pink is strange in that it has a calming effect at first, but then causes stress if you keep looking at it.

I'd argue the original podrace has more of an effect on plot than most other films "podrace". Aside from moving the plot along It serves to establish that Anakin is a very good pilot despite his age (and likely force assisted), and the bit about the Tusken Raiders routinely sniping racers also shows that he has experience flying while being fired at. Plus they actually accomplished the goal of making an entertaining action scene based on how popular podrace merch was for years afterwards.
Truth. Phantom Menace was clumsily done, because Lucas was trying to tell a story too big for its format. The podrace did what it was supposed to do, but like every other element in the movie, it didn't have a chance to meld with the rest, so it just feels like padding. It's not, but it feels like it.
The Podrace scene was one of the better things to come out of the prequels, I think, and I say this after having time to appreciate what Lucas was trying to accomplish with the trilogy. If I ever had the chance to make a Star Wars movie; it wouldn't have anything to do with Jedi, With, galactic politics or anything like that. It would just be a podracing movie; _Days of Thunder,_ but in space.
You also forgot that Qui-Gon bet including Anakin that Watto didnt want to sell, he also tried to include Anakin mother but Watto refused, it wasnt just the part for the ship. Tattooine in Episode 1 is a "pit stop" but at the same time the prequels had to include Anakin Skywalker since the prequels were about the rise of the Empire and thus Anakin fall, Tattooine was required for what George wanted to do with the character far more that Naboo was but the story needed Naboo as well, the greatest flaw is that if you see it in order then Tattooine section feels off as if you see it in release order Tattooine makes sense.
Fun fact about the Joker movie, since it was brought up, the movie played in theatres on the same day (I think) as Frozen 2, and despite Joker being the movie everyone said incited violence, a machete fight took place in the theatre showing Frozen 2
When it comes to movies that are centered on characters who are women, they can be done well. All you have to do is create interesting characters with flaws who are able to grow and change through adversity who happen to be women. The way I see it, a movie that doesn't focus on a character's gender and instead focuses on creating a character who feels like and acts like a real person in a compelling setting or world is the key to a quality storyline. Combine that with interesting sequences and dialogue as well as quality filming and editing with solid performances and a capable director alongside a quality crew and you're on your way. What matters isn't a character's superficial or arbitrary details, but what makes them stand out and worthy of an audience's investment. Sure, you can have overcoming a setting's closed-minded social norms as part of a character's journey and growth, but even this can be done without shoving a character's gender in their face as some kind of achievement in and of itself. For example, the original Disney animated film Mulan presents a character overcoming the social norms of their environment in order to accomplish something great. The thing is, Mulan does this not by virtue of her being a woman who is better than the boys because she is a woman, but because she is her own character who learns, grows, adapts, and ultimately emerges victorious with help from those she befriends while also being able to utilize her intelligence and quick wits to accomplish her goals on top of having a strong and indominable will. Her being a woman doesn't make her a hero, but who she is as a person outside of her gender does. If you want to create something worthwhile that represents women well in film, look to examples such as Mulan, Ripley from Alien, Sarah Connor from Terminator, etc. to draw inspiration from to name a few. It can be and has been done so there's plenty of proof all around you illustrate the point I'm making. Lastly, I apologize for making this a whole ramble as I initially intended to only type out a few sentences, but I feel this topic needs more of an explanation and a more detailed analysis to do it justice. Hopefully I have accomplished that without losing too many readers on this one. :P

For those who would say "No the ghost killed him not her" She again released it due to her fragile ego and that led to him being killed so she is responsible herself. Say what u want if one of the origional ghostbusters did something that stupid and it got a person killed they would of not gotten away with it freely and it would of effected them badly for the movie. As far as kevin their asisstant I once heard a person defend how dumb he is as a sort of "ha got you" in regard to how female characters and the origional female secretary was regarded. Problem is aside from you know its not the 1960s anymore and there have been alot of deep and solid female roles Janine, forgive spelling if wrong, was not regarded as a dumb sexual object the crew could sexualize or objectify. She was intelligent and a solid char. Yea i never thought on it but why did he not just puppet them? I mean they are normal humans and had no sort of protection so why did he just not freeze them? Suppose the reason was just by the power of vagina...... I always hate it when a story dumbs a villain down just to make the heroes look good.
That's what I've always thought about the secretary thing--the way they treat Kevin feels like revenge for something that never happened. Janine was not dumb and was not objectified and drooled over. She could hold her own when verbally sparring with the guys. But in these feminists' delusional minds, Janine was treated badly so they need to make up for it by having female Ghostbusters treating a male secretary the same way. Even though the mistreatment of a woman never happened in the original! Insane.
I don't think its possible for the writers of this movie to dumb any character down. In fact I always assumed the reason most of the characters don't have any actual character and just feel like comedians standing there saying random things is that the writers exhausted every ounce of mental energy they had writing Kevin's character and just gave up on the rest.
Even with the "the ghost did it" argument, it doesn't explain the whole "person died in front of them" thing, which is horrifying IRL in every single case, even if you're just a bystander. Happy Gilmore did "character falls out a window as a result of another character's foolishness and dies" joke much better, because it was actually amusing. This could have worked if, for example, they had the ghost already out, in a glorified fish tank, perhaps. They show Bill Murray, and the ghost tries to break free, which scares him, and he falls out the window. They're absolved of the blame, they look shocked, hard cut to a funeral or a news statement, and the film moves on.
3:50 Let's say for the sake of argument that everything IS political. This doesn't mean that everything is partisan. People who make things partisan are often selfish people with ill intent trying to satisfy their own sense of moral superiority.
If Ghostbusters 2016 started the whole "Just say you hate women" 'argument', what do you think birthed the whole "You're just racist if you criticize a movie that heavily stars or is made by POC" 'argument'?
Patty is obviously a racial stereotype in this movie. When people pointed it out, they were accused by the actress of being racists... Talk about abysmal idiocy.
This doesn’t really feel like a Ghostbusters movie, it has less to do with the ghost hunting and equipment and more to do with chinese food, queef jokes, and Hot Chris Hemsworth
I understand the reason for Chris to be there is solely so people don't know him as Thor, and well, judging by how my Mom instantly pointed and said "oh look, Thor is ghost hunting now"... Yeah, probably won't work so soon
Indeed. It wasn't. It was more a gimmick for "grrrl power" and didn't respect the source material or the universe it operated in. It reduced it to a flipped script gimmick. It had no seriousness or depth to it. Which added to the insult. You believed Harold Ramis was a scientist. None of the roles in this movie were believable.
A word about the all-female cast controversy: I'm planning on writing a final story for a long form series surrounding a gay couple struggling to let go of a haunting past and having trouble finding their place in the world as young adults. Very few problems in their lives are homophobia-related. And one lady who does kinda go after one of the guys for being gay is shown to be a sympathetic character. It's not perfect, but I like to think it's better than this.
@@AutumnWind92 She didn't like it because of the swearing. It doesn't matter whether or not the person is a man or a woman, she still doesn't like swearing.
If anyone wants to say that we are automatically hating on this movie because it changed the franchise to have a female lead. Just look at Mad Max Fury Road. Furiosa is basically the protagonist and everyone likes that film.
It's also not the only female led franchise that guys like. But those that cry about GB 2016 just can't accept that it was a vastly unfunny and borderline spiteful movie. First, it bruises their ego about being wrong, and secondly, they then need to explain what all the passive aggressive FAKE articles were all about. :/
I watched this movie as a kid and liked it, but after seeing this (this time being my 3rd time watching this review out of boredom), I can say I was just a kid with no standards
Original movie: if one of the Ghostbusters falls down, he needs help to get back up. Reboot movie: Melissa McCarthy's character does a kip up while wearing a backpack that's supposed to weigh 100 pounds.
I have this theory that people like this don't even watch the film. They just say stuff like that because they desperately want a mainstream iconization for their beliefs. Because this film does NOT empower women. Like... at all. It's actually kind of insulting to women. x_x
@@tarrker agreed real empowerment and real equality is throwing the notion of gender out the window and focusing on the person women are people too they can be masculine badass and fight a big fucking alien queen so once you throw out gender and stop being all "ooooh im a woman im better" and be like "im a person and im badass" thats empowerment baby
@@AbrasiousProductions It's even WORSE when you verbalize that in a movie. If you're actions or journey throughout the movie doesn't ACTUALLY show you're a bad ass, saying it aloud won't make that happen or make it true. If anything, it immediately dispels the entire aura of awesomeness that your character was trying to build up. EXAMPLE: It's why Nikita doesn't go around telling everyone how awesome she is or how pathetic men are - she shows up, takes care of business and goes for her post-mission briefing. :/
Ok. The movie isnt the worst thing in existence, but that was never really why ghostbusters was loathed. The reason everyone hates it is because of the brazenness of everyone involved, to say that if you didnt like the movie, you were somehow a sexist. This movie essentially validated the excuse that if you disliked certain movies you were a phobe. Of what, I dont know, they keep making excuses.
I hated the "Women are funny, get over it" comments, like we haven't had women in comedic leads for longer than most of these assholes have been alive. The fucking director had already had 3 female fronted comedies that were critically and commercially successful, but even he decided to bitch about how nobody wants to see women in comedic roles.
I mean, it IS a pretty shitty movie fully of stupid jokes, but the main reasons are the one you mentioned, along with the fact that it rebooted a beloved IP just to gut it of any heart, stuff it with dated humor and gwnder politics, and dump a bunch of glittery special effects on the corpse.
3:22 "Just because you're incapable of self-reflection, and you shove politics into everything you say and do, which causes you to project political motivations on everyone else, and you're now incapable of seeing things as they are, and feel the need to inject your bias into everything, and make everything about your pet issues through eisegesis. That doesn't mean that everything is meant to be viewed through an ideological lense. Not everything is an allegory for the struggles of proletariat or the intersection of racial justice, or whatever bullshit you're English professor told you. Just because all you have is a hammer, that doesn't mean that everything is a nail." ~Possum Reviews
I like how the movie was just so desperate for laughs they tried to add in every slapstick, gross out and quirky scene they could make, it’s so pathetic that it makes the scary movie franchise look tolerable.
At least Scary Movie is supposed to be exclusively slapstick since it's a goliardic parody of pre-existing stuff, you know the sort of thing you can watch at an after-party and have a laugh at, because it was specifically made for that scenario. Ghostbusters 2016 is a different story: it's not a parody of the original Ghostbusters, so even with the slapstick comedy in you'd expect at least somewhat more developed humor, a serious moment or a well-written storyboard. There's a difference when you write a dumb joke as a result of a purposefully dumb direction and when you write a dumb joke despite having a serious direction, this is what really irks me with Ghostbusters 2016.
Let's be fair here Scary movies 1-3 were quite good for what they are, with the hindsight of knowing what parody movies turned into. The fourth one was the worst, and very much a victim of what happened to that family of films as a whole. I *liked* the Scary Movie Trilogy, but I don't defend the indefensible.
Scary Movie series was funny when it released but I think it’s obvious those movies didn’t age well because they were based on its current pop culture. You really can’t compare these two movies, one is is aware it’s a parody film based on pop culture, the other is political activism.
The character arc possum reviews went through is probably the most impressive thing related to this movie. He went from blind anger to unimaginable exhaustion.
If you followed it from the beginning the issue was super easy to see. The movie was greenlit on nothing more than "Ghostbusters with all female leads". They didn't go "we have a great idea for a new movie that can get the GB franchise rolling again" then decide to cast women in the leads, they started with a cast and an IP and then came up with a movie to use those people and that property in, and it shows.
When I was younger I was a HUGE Ghostbusters fan and I was actually excited for this movie. And yes, I enjoyed it when I watched it. This is yet another reason to go back in time and punch my elementary-middle school self in the face. And yes, if anyone ever calls me sexist for not liking this movie I’m going to show them an actually good movie with a female protagonist like the original 1979 Alien and Aliens.
Tbh I don't know what the hell middle school me was thinking when I watched it. But I repeatedly watched over and over on DVD. Before eventually, I began to grow annoyed of jt
The Mike Hat joke literally makes me cringe even now when I think about it. It was horribly unfunny. In fact I think it should be used as an example in comedy education for actors and comedians in how NOT to make a joke. The whole movie stops dead for that scene and you wonder how any human can be such an idiot as the guy Hemsworth is playing.
The joke would’ve actually been funny if it was in a show like The Office, with Michael explaining that when he was younger he had a cat called Mike Hat that only he could relate with. It would’ve worked with how incredibly awkward Michael Scott is
A year late to this party but fuck it, I'm here and that's all that matters! In the the whole of Possum's entire catalog of RUclips videos, my absolute favorite quote is in this very review. Namely this single line: "We sure do live in a society, dont we?" The hilarious, perfectly delivered sarcasm is matched only by the depth of social commentary evident in this simple sentence. Keep manning that wall, Possum!
I think the gender of a character only should matter if it actually matters/makes sense in the story Best examples I can think of are 1917 and the Breadwinner 1917 not only is based on a true story, but its a faithfull ww1 period movie, of course the character has to be male, women werent allowed to fight then And in the Breadwinner the story is about a girl who has to pretend to be a boy to be able to work and feed her family, it shows a lot about the horrible patriarchal society she lives in and the struggles of women in those parts of the world Both movies would make no sense if the main characters were a different gender, so its ok in those kinds of cases
@@danialyousaf6456 - I don't know if I would go that far. Ultimately their are only so many types of stories one can tell. It's why many movies are super predictable if you've consumed enough media. A good example of this is sports movies since they almost always follow the same story beats every time. I mean I suppose you could change things up by making a movie about Abraham Lincoln's wrestling career, but a movie about a guy winning all of the time would be pretty boring. And if your curious Abraham Lincoln is actually in the wrestling hall of fame and has over 300 wins to his name with only a single loss. And it's debated by some if that one loss should really count.
@@thesacredlobo it all depends on the creativity of a writer. A good writer can make even a boring story/plotline interesting by changing stuff up. Nowadays they just play it safe instead of experimenting with new ideas. It's honestly kinda boring.
@@danialyousaf6456 - I'm not sure there are really any new ideas under the sun at this point when it comes to story ideas. Sure you can create a new intellectual property, but the stories themselves will most likely fall into various categories. Jeez, I remember when a lot of feminists championed J. K. Rowling because she was a popular female author. Even though J. K. Rowling's works make use of a lot of tropes that third wave feminists supposedly hate. A good example of this is how J. K. Rowling made repeated use of the damsel in distress or variants of this plot device in her books. Book 1: Ron and Harry team up to save Hermione from a troll. Book 2: Hermione in the words of certain Anita is rendered a helpful damsel by having the much needed clue for Ron and Harry to figure out that the creature petrifying students in the school is a giant snake making use of the school's pipes to get around. And culminates with Harry going down into the chamber of secrets to rescue Ginny. Book 3: Hermione and Harry travel back in time to save Sirius. Book 4: The second task where Hermione is once again rendered a damsel in distress in need of saving. Book 5: Dumbledore has to rescue Umbridge from the centaurs. And this one is arguably the worst offender since it renders a villain all about control entirely helpless. Book 6: This is the only book I don't remember this plot point coming up, but I'll admit I really didn't enjoy book six. So much so that I decided to not even read the last one. Book 7: While I didn't read this book I have heard that Dobby helped rescue the golden trio from the Malfoy's Mansion at the cost of his life. As we can see Anita and others will constantly argue we need to think beyond the "Damsel in Distress" and it's many variants, but will champion an author that made use of that trope in most of her books. At least they championed her until she came out as a TERF.
About the dragon ghost, I'm pretty sure the animated Ghostbusters or some other older Ghostbusters media revealed that a lot of the more monstrous/inhuman-looking ghosts weren't actually ghosts, but rather, entities from other dimensions who just function like ghosts in our dimension.

Mans had a 3 minute argument with himself and still sounded credible.
If I remember correctly, he was a Marine

what's worse is that a cartoon succeeded where Sony failed.
As for Garret him being in a Wheelchair hardly ever impacted him as a Ghost buster and he is one of the more athletic characters and a cheerful wiseguy ,
And Roland" well he is Black so what? its never mentioned much less impacts the story. he is just another person and he is the new tech guy working on new devices with Egon himself .
(I never really thought about this myself until I started watching this review and realized how screwed up the 'reboot' is )

@@burntvirtue I was refuring more to how much has changed since 2016
I think another thing that hurts Ghostbusters 2016 is the fact that every character in the team is trying to be a Venkman and all that does is turn the movie into an adlib shitshow where everyone is trying be more clever than their costars.

Journos and critics who are affiliated with the site pretend to act like they're smart by putting in college academia words to describe these movies and they feel about them. It goes to show how completely broken this site is.

One time I encountered a guy who genuinely believed that review sites were the “objective” ranking of movies.

One of the biggest issues I took with it was that it breached the letterbox. Either be full screen or don't, but breaching the letterbox with the CG breaks any potential immersion a movie may have been building and reminds you "hey, you're just watching a movie."
What annoyed me about the scene where Bill murray's character got axed was not just the sheer stupidity and childness of the woman who unleashed it but there seems to be zero remorse at all. Wether or not you agree with a persons' views, politics or even if you dislike them in general any normal person would feel some remorse or be effected by a person dieing by their hand in some fashion.

A word about the all-female cast controversy:
I'm planning on writing a final story for a long form series surrounding a gay couple struggling to let go of a haunting past and having trouble finding their place in the world as young adults. Very few problems in their lives are homophobia-related. And one lady who does kinda go after one of the guys for being gay is shown to be a sympathetic character. It's not perfect, but I like to think it's better than this.
Does your series end with them realizing their place in the world is working a 9-5, and paying bills?
@@catonachimney3602 well that among other things lol
The fact you’re thinking about these things is enough nuance to make it work
Oh boy it's this movie. My grandmother took me to see it. She did not like it.

really liked that you used the knuckles clip, the clip really did a dawn good job summarizing the dumbassery of the argument
Your beginning, well articulated renunciation of the argument that "everything is political", was refreshingly masculine.
"Do you hate women, fart noise."
You made me actually laugh with how dead inside you sound.
To be fair, there were people that complained about Mad Max Fury Road as well. Though, I'm guessing the whiners were in the minority.
Why? Because Fury Road is still a well made movie that didn’t hinge it’s marketing and publicity on “main character is woman”
Mad Max Fury Road is OVERRATED

Original movie: if one of the Ghostbusters falls down, he needs help to get back up.
Reboot movie: Melissa McCarthy's character does a kip up while wearing a backpack that's supposed to weigh 100 pounds.

Really? She couldn’t do a normal kip up…

I love how the new Ghostbusters retcons this entire movie and ignores its existence.
unfortunately i know a lady in her 40s who says this is "an empowering masterpiece" she's just as insufferable as she sounds
@@sigmacademy completely agree
This comment made me spill my coffee. XD
Of what, I dont know, they keep making excuses.
and now that's made way for Amazon and Disney to call their fans racists for not liking the trash they put out.
Everything woke turns to shit
I hated the "Women are funny, get over it" comments, like we haven't had women in comedic leads for longer than most of these assholes have been alive.
The fucking director had already had 3 female fronted comedies that were critically and commercially successful, but even he decided to bitch about how nobody wants to see women in comedic roles.
And it keeps on going and doesn't stop this trend started with this movie (The Velma show is the most recent to do this)
I mean, it IS a pretty shitty movie fully of stupid jokes, but the main reasons are the one you mentioned, along with the fact that it rebooted a beloved IP just to gut it of any heart, stuff it with dated humor and gwnder politics, and dump a bunch of glittery special effects on the corpse.
Just because all you have is a hammer, that doesn't mean that everything is a nail."
~Possum Reviews
@@tehrik0020 All the more reason to hate the movie and Sony for making the movie.
Let's be fair here
Scary movies 1-3 were quite good for what they are, with the hindsight of knowing what parody movies turned into. The fourth one was the worst, and very much a victim of what happened to that family of films as a whole.
I *liked* the Scary Movie Trilogy, but I don't defend the indefensible.
Hey scary movie 1 ain't bad
Scary Movie series was funny when it released but I think it’s obvious those movies didn’t age well because they were based on its current pop culture. You really can’t compare these two movies, one is is aware it’s a parody film based on pop culture, the other is political activism.
You can laugh at me all you want, but I’m just really sad that *this* was the only ghost busters movie released after I was born…

But they didn't have a great idea for a new movie that could get the Ghostbusters franchise rolling again.

To be fair, I'd say the Mike Hat bit was less stupid then people thinking NASA went to the moon to hide evidence of Noah's Flood.
The joke would’ve actually been funny if it was in a show like The Office, with Michael explaining that when he was younger he had a cat called Mike Hat that only he could relate with. It would’ve worked with how incredibly awkward Michael Scott is
@@thesacredlobo It's really a coin toss as to which option is dumber.
A year late to this party but fuck it, I'm here and that's all that matters! In the the whole of Possum's entire catalog of RUclips videos, my absolute favorite quote is in this very review. Keep manning that wall, Possum!
Yeesh, i didn't know Ozzy was in this movie.
Makes me sad he is in it, but ironically it is the brightest and best part so far for me.
I like to think that he didn’t know he was in the movie and was just reacting to the camera crew doing cocaine
I think the gender of a character only should matter if it actually matters/makes sense in the story
Best examples I can think of are 1917 and the Breadwinner
1917 not only is based on a true story, but its a faithfull ww1 period movie, of course the character has to be male, women werent allowed to fight then
And in the Breadwinner the story is about a girl who has to pretend to be a boy to be able to work and feed her family, it shows a lot about the horrible patriarchal society she lives in and the struggles of women in those parts of the world
Both movies would make no sense if the main characters were a different gender, so its ok in those kinds of cases
Writers nowadays can't think for shit and would rather regurgitate other people's ideas and put their political spin on it.
@@thesacredlobo I do remember Abraham Lincoln being tough as shit so not surprised that he was a wrestler.
The way the cgi ghosts “break” through the aspect ratio looks so awful.
It's because it was meant to be watched in 3D. This was well done in Dredd with a few minor elements popping out of the frame.
Even one of the actresses breakes through the aspect ratio.
