The Homeless Man Who Made a Horror Movie

- David Fussell’s dream was always to be a film director. Whilst living in a small town in Wales and working as a mechanic, misfortune struck - both of his parents died and the house he inherited from them flooded, costing him £90,000. Instead of dwelling on his misfortune, he saw the loss as an opportunity: freedom.
He decided to put his remaining money towards living out his dream by self financing, writing, producing, directing and acting in the action-spy-horror movie he always wanted to make - Mystic Demon Killer. This decision eventually cost him a lot more than he had anticipated, including his home. It didn’t, however, dampen his spirits.
After shooting the film, whilst living in a van, he took a train to London with nothing but the clothes on his back and a rough cut of his film on a hard drive. Since coming to London, David has managed to build a network of supportive people and organisations who have helped him out in various ways to realise his vision. He has spent the past four and a half years sleeping rough outside a department store in Central London by night, and editing his film by downloading some free editing software on a computer in the offices of a homeless shelter by day.
VICE follow David in the build up to the cinematic premiere of his film. David takes us on a tour of his London, showing us the places which have been important in his journey. David’s optimism and determination are admirable, and through spending time with him and his friends it is clear that the preconception of homeless people which is often lazily pedaled out by the mainstream media doesn’t even come close to the rich and varied realities and experiences for the many different types of people who live on the street.

thank you for showing us this
Thank You for this beautiful video. I needed this to put things into perspective. I hope he achieves his goals and will support his cause.
@Sean Doherty just fucking leave bro, he prefers to love his dream
Sean Doherty why are you jealous of this guy’s achievements?
@@angelcervantes1811 Sorry but that isn't true. Knew this guy years ago. There are many lies in this video :/
This man seems a really postive and nice man and I wish him the best
Me too, Kid. He seems like a dude who's fallen on hard times and tried to do something positive with it. I hope he can make his vampire film.
@Sean Doherty I hate to say it but something doesn't add up
@Sean Doherty You can Charge your phone Anywhere with an outlet.. Homeless doesn't mean you're dumb, stupid or mindless.. Tf... They're plenty of millionaires, Film stars. Comedians that where homeless.. Steve Harvey, Eddie Griffin, Jimmy Butler(76ers)etc.. Educate yourself before you Judge.. " YOU'RE A PAYCHECK AWAY FROM BEING HOMELESS IS REAL" Ask Any Vets Around the World.😒
I got a feeling this guys films going to blow up after this video
I don't know a single person who would watch that
@@days2093 I'm sorry to say the few friends you have are not the target demographic
i'm sorry to say if you have friends you are not the target demographic
Definitely don't think it will blow up, it's not horrible looking, but it seems like it's for a certain type of film buff. I was going to get a copy before I saw clips, but I know it's nothing I'll be able to get into..
lawless vapors By blow up I mean get substantial more sales than his current 10, I don’t think that’s beyond achievable. His go fund me has already gone up by £130 since the release of this video, I’m sure a few curious people would have already bought it
That vampire movie with the Homeless character sounds brilliant, and definatly could be done for less than 10 million, if he crowdfunded that I'd Donate and im sure plenty others would too.
Starring Simon Pegg & Nick Frost?
@@Wolfhowlin Exactly what I thought!
Definately.
i would defo want to see that just by the sketch its all ready come to life!
Major props to Vice for doing this piece. Congrats to David on completing the film and seeing his dream realized. As a fellow independent filmmaker, I wish him continued success. Its inspiring to see someone with little means, able to rise above circumstances and create something positive in the world. I hope he keeps writing and joins up with writing groups and film creators in his city to carry on . Its my experience that being connected with a community of like - minded people is much more helpful than going it alone. Peace and good fortune sir
AMEN!!!
I actually love the idea of two homeless men trying to uncover a vampire conspiracy in London
I do too.. I'll be interesting on his perspective in London being homeless
Ikr that would actually be intresting to watch.
Simon Pegg & Nick Frost !!
Yeah I'm into this!
Eloi Febrero I would buy it
Your a good man, I will buy your film after watching this on vice. Thank you
I really hope this guy makes his dreams come true
He definitely worked really hard on that film and he has done a great job if u ask me
It seems like you don’t need millions of dollars to make a movie
Nice job
-4 Subscribers with a hammer addiction you need millions for making a top quality movie.
Anyone with a dream can make a movie!
its kind of ..... a C-movie, or maybe D...
Mr1shF Hundreds of millions
"The Blair Witch Project (?)" was made on a shoestring and grossed millions.
Help this man out ppl. Buy his film and make him happy.
I have excuses for why I can't do so many things. Why? It doesn't have to be like that. This guy is amazing. I literally teared up when he was on the way to see HIS movie that HE made while fucking HOMELESS!! Incredible. I'm buying a copy right now.
How? How did he make a film while homeless? That’s crazy! I spent ten years homeless myself in USA
I appreciate you vice.
I wish the best of luck to this man with his life and hope he continues making films. Being homeless isn't always a choice as some people think and it's a extremely hard life as you can see. It takes along time to heal old wounds. Ty vice for bringing this.
My eyes was tearing while watching this video. It is truly inspiring story. I will watch this film and I will recommend it to my freinds. Much respect to this strong man.
meetoo
Noooo way I always used to see him in the morning omw to work, gave him some food once. Super happy for him great guy.
noooo way! I used to see you give him some food once. Super happy to see you here,, great gal!
Jim Smith noooo way! I used to see you see her give him food once. Super happy to see you see her here, great guy.

Professor Doctor Noooooo waaaaay! I used to see him see her see him see it give food to the homeless guys🤡🤡
Noooo way guys I used to see you all on the street, gave youse food once, super happy for you all, great people
I would love for him to make a vlog channel on youtube to share his daily life. I find his positive outlook, determination and passion so inspiring! and hopefully his channel could make him some money to help with day to day expenses
Much love and respect to the charities that support people like David.
I love his friend.. "what some dodgy film?"
The whole interaction was great: "Are you free on the 5th of February?"
I love this guy's positivity!!
Its amazing how positive someone who is homeless can be!!
Imagine the documentary this guy could do about the homeless. Someone sponsor that man a camera and give him a payday 💷
Bless him. You can clearly see how much it meant to him. Considering his situation the film wasn't bad either. It made him so happy having this opportunity and the reception he got. Go on lad.
Bless David Fussell for pursuing his dream, and bless the researcher for giving him and his film the push that it needs.
13:45 this guy's creativity is beyond me
Hats off to u sir !! U deserve the best that of definitely coming ur way
Yes hope this guy makes some money from doing this movie!
@Sean Doherty what do you mean?
Its great to hear some good news about someone homeless!!
It is pretty profound that he was able to do what he did on like a nothing budget, and more impressive that he did it while HOMELESS.
He implied he was still renting during the period of filming.
@@LiamPorterFilms "He implied" the entire documentary implied that he did it while homeless, so ... I dunno what the fuck your point is, if you have one at all, he had to edit his movie in what looked like an internet cafe or something, IDC if he was allowed to sleep on his neighbor's couch for a day or two of the process, it doesn't change the fact that he made a movie while somewhat homeless and it doesn't change the fact that it's incredible
@Sean Doherty And VICE never picked up on this in all the time investigating they spent? In the process of making this nearly half hour long expose it never was revealed to them in any way that he was only "sorta homeless"? Honestly, that's like saying your wife or your girl is "sorta pregnant". You either are or you aren't.
@Sean Doherty You are so mistaken. He is not fake he lives outside Heals on TCR you can see for yourself.
He wasn't homeless while filming, he was renting and had quite a nice little editing studio. It was only after the film, at the time named 'Onikudaki Demon Destroyer', had been finished for some time that he decided to move to London, probably due to the friends he had pushed away and/or betrayed in his home town.
Good luck David , that was nice that you screened the film for him .👍
He should make a horror film called " Homeless" - about a man that loses everything, but tries to make a horror film on the streets and is chased by the characters in his horror film- basically it is him losing his mind
Why doesn’t HBO, netflix or youtube step up and show this flick and support an artist in an extraordinary situation?
Because they would be waisting money on things no-one watches
0days
And they don’t already?
@@days2093 whoa super edgy bro so much edge bro
If he lived in California Homeboyz industries would tried to help talented people like this with real artist and connections..
@@_robustus_ that's why there should be a network for people like you to "help out smaller people." Netflix is a brand that's like saying ohh why doesn't Nike sell off brand supreme?
Homeless for 4-11yrs but puts together film, hires actors, locations, props, etc, etc.but very motivational and aspiring.
I’m so glad VICE did this for the guy. He really deserves it.
keep forward, and always. remember "There's a will there's a way" .
This guy really inspired
Homless people are humans too. Alot of them have talents. Look at street performers. Welcome to reality.
THAT is dedication! You’ve got my support, David!
OMG!!!! I just left a message on another video here about Instagram and this came up as a suggestion...THANK YOU!!!!! I'm homeless too, I actually have a sitcom that I've written but thanks to lack of funding haven't been able to get the pilot shot, working on it though. When I get it done will you feature me and my work? That would be AWESOME!!!! Seriously, THANK YOU AGAIN for doing this video, you have no idea how much this lifts my spirits!!!! I'm not the only one. I don't feel so isolated now. VICE ROCKS!!!!
For the love of God, more stuff like this please Vice.
Good luck David! In the midst of homelessness, your positivity and attitude to life is an inspiration. Keep at it mate. Much respect from Dublin, Ireland.
Never.Give.Up. Thank you, Mr. Fussell for being inspirational in the face of great adversity.
One of the best Vice films so far. What a nice guy. We can all learn a lot from this man........
As a person who’s experienced homelessness for over 4 yrs myself, i have to say this man is truly special. To be homeless that length and still have the faith, optimism, kindness, determination, resistance of drugs/alc/crime. This is very moving and inspirational and i hope the best for this guy. So cool he completed the film and the lengths he went to do it. AWESOME. And the idea he has is brilliant as well (2 homeless guys uncover a vampire conspiracy). That film could be very special if done the right way w/ the right cast & direction. Hope this guy nothing but the best
This is awesome, yall are awesome, and he and everyone yall interviewed were awesome humble people. Much love 💯✌👌🤙
all the best man!Your positive attitude and outlook on life is inspiring.
What an absolute legend! That guys attitude to life is great
Never doubted Dave's tenacity, enthusiasm and resilience
It’s so humbling to watch this guy; choosing to not go in an ambulance as he thought there would be someone else in greater need.
Wonderful, inspiring, warm , talented man! Wishing you a rich life.
The problem with cult classics is that they become cult classics long after they (usually) bombed at the box office, possibly not even bringing any actual benefits to their creators.
I mean...I watch a lot of objectively bad stuff, because it's entertaining and it has a special flavour I can't get anywhere else. So yeah, I will buy this film and I'm sure I'm gonna enjoy it at least a little bit. (probably a lot)
Plus, this time the money will go directly to the guy who made it, that's pretty neat.
Would be kinda cool if Red Letter Media featured "Mystic Demon Killer" on Best of the Worst, or Half in the Bag!
Thank you vice for doing this. This is what i subscribe for.👍👍
What an amazing story.. and this guy is amazing , never giving up on his dreams .. Homelessness is a real problem worldwide , people from all walks of life.
That's so awesome! So powerful!
Such an inspiration
It'll definitely be a cult classic, mate. Very inspiring story behind it.
Wow! Great doco! I hope he cracks it, he already did really.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. More of this please :)
Inspiring as hell, and his next feature idea actually sounds really great!
Well done David, bloody resilient. Your determination will pay off. Moved from West Wales to Indonesia.
wish i had an ounce of the positive vibes this man puts off, nothing can really stop that one
If you read this ( director) I hope the best for you and your movie, you seem like a really nice guy good luck and stay positive mate
Great job, David!!🤩
I just bumped into this man in London and he told me he now owns a house boat and is doing great.
Big respect and love to this guy 💕💕
Excellent story. I bought Mr. Fussell's movie after watching this VICE story. I'm looking forward to watching it. Good luck to Mr. Fussell on his future endeavors.
Great guy!
God bless him
Vice you have done great job
Expect from more like this
Good job
Love this guy, wish I had his enthusiasm and optimism.
I've seen quite a few independent films and this audio is better than most. No lie
well done and congratulations!!! Unlike other poverty-stricken countries I'm so proud to live in a city where ordinary independent people (not part of government) come together to show love and support to those that are homeless, GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FRIEND JEFF who I know because I work for Greenlight (a homeless charity) I worry and care for you and send you my love xx
His ideas for his movies are actually interesting. May he achieve his goals
Well done to vice for trying to make the homeless human beings 💪💪💪👍💓💓
Good job Vice👍
Wow i gotta say Vice you're fixing your track record over the last few weeks or so and are actually making interesting documenturies/reports again. You managed to give this homeless man some exposure. I didn't know britains homeless problem was so bad
Freaking awesome!!!
Thats dedication to the craft hope for the best to the lad.
What a nice and humble man! I hope some investor gives him the money for his next film. I would like to see it!!!
This guy
Keep fighting the good fight David.
David, please create the film about the 2 homeless people. We all want you to succeed! Good luck
Bless this guy
David, ur awesome. Best of luck from Kentucky in the US
David is amazing!, wish him to have a place of his own, everybody should have one.
Goodluck david for your film!
Great going. I hope to be the next homeless film director!
This guy deserves so much
beyond a cool story, I hope for the most for David
Great stuff.
I downloaded a copy of the new Bohemian Rhapsody movie, but I think it was filmed in a cinema.
.
I can't make out what's going on, I just see a little silhouetto of a man
Graham Jonathan cant watch the movie alone, because i’m just a little boy nobody loves me...😢
Get on your bicycle instead then...? Eh..Eh
Then buy it
@@lancetah Why don't you spare him his life from this monstrosity

Appreciate his ambition. Maybe his skill will get him work in the industry. Best of luck and prayers to this mans and the future if all homeless people. We all as human beings deserve. A safe warm place to call home without judgment..
This just shows that you don't need millions to make a movie just your mind
This is amazing and inspiring
Good on this guy for making the best of his circumstances
David is proof that there is no excuse to not follow your dreams.
his homeless vampire idea is so cool! I wish him nothing but the best bless up🙏🏻
I really love the idea of his next movie! I pray he finds some way to get it made ❤
Tbh i didn't want this episode to end it was very inspiring
