  • After being rejected from the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, Vietnamese software salesman James Nguyen spent a week driving around the festival in a minivan covered fake blood and stuffed eagles guerilla promoting his low-budget 'romantic thriller' Birdemic: Shock and Terror.
    This stunt caught the attention of two festival-goers, including VICE host Evan Husney, who after experiencing the film were enthusiastically compelled to release it throughout the country. Birdemic opened to massive mainstream media attention and was celebrated by audiences for its groundbreaking imperfections, some touting it 'the worst movie ever made'.
    Years after the Birdemic phenomenon, Husney reunites with Nguyen who is still haunted by the film's reception and desperate to restart his career.

      James Nguyen always wanted to purposely make a bad movie and cash in on the so bad it's good craze. Birdemic is his vain attempt at trying to become the next Tommy Wiseau, except Tommy Wiseau was actually sincere and honest when he made The Room and didn't expect the reaction it got. James Nguyen knew Birdemic was awful from day one and wanted it to have a cult following and you can tell from the glib and disingenuous tone that the movie has. When you watch scenes you can tell he was clutching at straws to try and hit as many home runs as possible with the endless boardroom clapping shots and the gif animated birds. You guys think you're catching lightning in a bottle when you're really being fooled by an opportunistic snake oil salesman. He wants to be the next Ed Wood but he's nowhere near as interesting or creative. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an incredibly long Andy Kaufman-esque prank, just hearing him talking about the movie and playing it up for the camera.

Then he said he went to the self taught Alfred Hitchcock school of film making. I feel bad because the dude has the delusion that people really like the movie and he truly believes he's made a masterpiece film, when in reality the only reason people watch it is to laugh at how awful it is and to see for themselves if the movie is as bad as everyone says. This guy makes Tommy Wiseau look like Scorsese, and this movie makes "The Room" look like Citizen Kane. Good god this poor guy needs a dose of reality and maybe a few sessions with a therapist.

The guy might be determined but it seems like he wants all the glory without putting in the work (I want to be in a rock band, I just don't want to learn how to sing or play an instrument). This became very obvious in how he reacted about the suggestion of making a short film ("I don't do short films"). Like how does he think guys like Del Toro, Nolan, Inarritu, etc. got where they are? Like I kind of understand his rush due to his age but it should be about the experience not winning awards.

Its a hard thing to do especially with that old computer, he had (still has some but will forever be haunted by bad career choices) potential. He should have made his second film more seriously without announcing to the heavens he had a movie deal lol and continued down that path, put in time, get a few movies under his belt, and maybe came back to the sequel as like a comedic project to produce to follow up on what got his name out there. However im not an actor/agent/producer so I really don’t know and this is just my opinion.

    People like James Nguyen and Tommy Wisseau are like personifications of many creative, passionate people’s worst fears. Many suffer from imposter syndrome where they think they’re just faking it rather than having any actual talent. While working at their craft, a deep insecurity takes over and they start wondering if they’re just wasting their time and if their talent and skill is really just on the level of the likes of this guy. It’s truly scary. That’s why it’s important to get feedback, take constructive criticism, and actually take the craft seriously by learning and receiving training.

      +Derek Smallshorts So true. Reading or watching something great will only make you think about how great it is, or how impossible it is to achieve that level of greatness, or it’ll make you want to copy that formula without making it your own. It won’t help you develop your own voice. But something that’s not quite there, or something that’s flat out bad, that’ll make you go, “I can do that better," or, “How did they get that wrong?” And it’ll help you learn how to get it right. Sometimes the best ideas come from something terrible. As one of my favorite film bloggers states, "A picture is worth a thousand words. A bad picture is worth two thousand."

    This is one of the most fascinating real life character studies I've seen in a long time. In minutes it swings between hillarious, painful, perplexing, awkward, aggravating and strangely up-lifting. One minute I want to laugh at Nguyen, then I feel bad for him, then angry and then I find an odd sort of admiration. It's like Husney said, there's something endearing about his sincerity. If you haven't seen "BIrdemic: Shock and Terror" Go watch it before you read the rest of this review or watch this documentary.
    The laughter is what comes first. You can't not laugh at those clips from Birdemic. I'd forgotten just how many painfully laughably bad lines there are all delivered with confused wooden performances. Then I see Nguyen and realize I'm not just laughing at the film. I'm laughing at a person.
    I start to feel bad for him because he seems so delusional. But little by little I get the sense that on some level he knows the film is a joke. When he's talking about the negative comments and how they don't matter, you can tell they really get to him and he's trying to convince himself otherwise. It almost seems like he can't admit it at this point even if he knows it was a train wreck. That all seems pretty tragic until you realize at the end of the day he gets to live out his fantasy of being a Hollywood big shot. He's even made money off his films. Is that really so pitiful?
    That's where I start to get angry. How dare he be so lucky and become famous off of a terrible film when so many talented filmmakers go unnoticed! But lets think about it, did he really do anything wrong to earn this paradoxical mix of success and failure? He got to this point through sincerity, hard work, and persistence. Aren't we all told those are good qualities to have? His marketing strategy was actually rather clever. He invested in himself in order to make this movie. It would be one thing if he just conned his relatives into putting up the budget (as many sleazy talentless low budget filmmakers do). Instead he put his own money on the line (not to mention his reputation which he kind of ruined). He devoted six months of his life to the project. It didn't hurt anyone. It made a lot of people laugh. It made me laugh. I had a great time watching Birdemic.
    There's a sort of bizarre hope mixed into it all. Maybe there's a lesson we can all learn from Nguyen. Maybe some of us just need a little more persistence to achieve our goals. Maybe we're just one clever promotional tactic away from making the connection that will change our lives. Maybe staying sincere, optimistic and true to yourself really can get you to a better place, if not quite the place you intended.

      I agree with you.
      Take into account the following: Hollywood producers are all (and i mean ALL of them) from the same cultist satanic religion or pseudo-phylosophy where everything, apart from cosmetic differences is one and the same. All scripts from Hollywood movies, all actors, are monitored and modified if it goes against a narrative.
      On the other side, we have this man, which is a delusional guy who self-financed a bad movie ; but at least it is authentic. Something Hollywood lost a long time ago.
      This authenticity is what drives some people into his ridiculously-low-budget film.

    I think that's the most humane way you can deal with these "so bad they're good" filmmakers. You gotta be honest with them about how their movies are, but also encourage them to use the attention to go back to the basics, learn to be a real filmmaker, and start with short films. The bottom line is, it's never too late for anyone to chase their dreams.These guys just need to be brought back to reality.

    • @bedelian
      @bedelian Год назад +5

      @@rokkvi1 definitely true. I don't see him making a 5-million-dollar indie feature that is nuanced and entertaining. Sure, anything is possible, but he would have to do an insane amount of personal work to be able to direct with that kind of voice. But I can say, as a filmmaker, my first short film was god awful. Zero subtext, poorly directed, bad sound, bad editing. But every film I've made since then has been better than the last one. Not to plug, but you can watch the trailer for my latest film on my channel. I went from making unwatchable student films to stuff I'm very proud of. My point is, if James actually took an honest look at what he did and spent 10 years making short films, he could get to a point where he can make an actually watchable short film. He'd need to do less, though. Less dialogue, less action, just tell a simple story.

    • @rokkvi1
      @rokkvi1 Год назад +3

      I agree that sometimes, someone who seems to totally suck at their art can eventually become good at it. It is not always obvious whether someone has the potential to become good eventually or not. I think with movies it is just so easy to fail, even if you do have talent, because just one aspect being bad can ruin a movie. No movie is good if the sound, lighting, filming or acting is totally bad for example. For some film makers like Nguyen, Wiseau, Breen etc. I just think they are so fundamentally out of touch with humanity that they couldn't make good stories people could ever relate to or care about in an honest way, just laugh at out of absurdity.

    • @bedelian
      @bedelian Год назад +3

      @@rokkvi1 Yes, unfortunately it is something about them and their world view. The ironic cult following their films get makes it worse. They can convince themselves that what they made is actually good because people are paying money to watch it. This blocks them from facing reality and growing from their mistakes. Neil Breen is the only filmmaker I've seen that has gotten worse with every film he makes.
