The Worst Movie Ever Made? The True Story of 'Birdemic'
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- After being rejected from the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, Vietnamese software salesman James Nguyen spent a week driving around the festival in a minivan covered fake blood and stuffed eagles guerilla promoting his low-budget 'romantic thriller' Birdemic: Shock and Terror.
This stunt caught the attention of two festival-goers, including VICE host Evan Husney, who after experiencing the film were enthusiastically compelled to release it throughout the country. Birdemic opened to massive mainstream media attention and was celebrated by audiences for its groundbreaking imperfections, some touting it 'the worst movie ever made'.
Years after the Birdemic phenomenon, Husney reunites with Nguyen who is still haunted by the film's reception and desperate to restart his career.

Well, it's terrible as fuck but... He wanted to do it, he was passionate about it, HE FUCKING FINISHED IT, he self promoted it around sundance... And just look how happy he is about it. I very much respect and admire that. Great dude. :)
look how happy he is? did you watch to the end?
+Chesty McGee Yes, I get it. His dreams came crushing down and became unrealistic. Kind of like Ed Wood's who ended up shooting porn. But I get it as someone who makes art, is quite shitty at it and still loves every second of the creative process.
This guy wanted to make a movie. And he made it.
all love !! I love your spirit.
AGREED IT SEEMS LIKE THEYRE SETTING HIM UP TO SOUND LIKE SOME CREEPY GUY WHEN IN REALITY HES DOING WHAT HE LOVES TO DO , HATERS GONNA HATE
he had passion & dedication
~ deadication ... perhaps a 4th movie ? where the birds run the world.
for me
this isn't about a movie
its about 1 guy and his dream vs the world
madman612 for me this is a lesson telling people how dumb will you be when you take hallucinogenic drugs
楊大帥 ? You mean how dumb youll be if you dont take them? I bet if he took LSD it would all make sense to him, he would accept the fact for what his movie is and take that agents advice to make a short film.
The world has standards. Who knew?
madman612 yeah but who the fuck will watch a movie that bad
ZA WARUDO!
Bad or good, this guy had a dream and went for it. Some people never get off the couch.
I was watching this and i was like "damn, you can't hate him for the hustle"
Respect to this guy.
Was sitting on my couch rewatching Vice's Outsider-series, and I thought exactly this when watching. I've been dreaming about creating movies and music for like 5-10 years without doing anything about it, and I feel so incredibly inspired by these guys! So sad though to see that 95% of the comments seem to call these movies shitty.
Tony, you should see Vice's video on Laz Rojas as well, if you haven't already. I'm seriously considering sending the guy an email to ask if he wants to work with me on a similar movie.
It’s a clear rip off of birds by Hitchcock. Ain’t no dream
Thanks for the heads up
he could be a content creator for adult swim
Mabye...
lol
your so right bro
Woa that would be perfect!
I'd watch
I'm can't lie, that Sundance stunt with the car making bird sounds is straight-up GENIUS.
sounds like something William Castle would've done back in the day
And guess what? After all these years, James Nguyen finally made 'Birdemic 3' and it got screened at festivals. He's now officially the Birdemic Guy.
Yeah but it went almost unnoticed no one talked about it,I didn't even know it had come out until like a year later at least, and it sure was not a 20 million dollar picture like he intended.
@@bobbyokeefe4285 FanboyFlicks reviewed the movie and so did a few others. You can look it up. And sure, it wasn't the big 20 million dollar picture Nguyen initially envisioned, but with how the movie came out in the end, he seems happy.
Sad, really.
@@pretorious700 (shrugs) Eh, see it as you wish. But James seems happy for himself, and I say good for him for achieving his goal.
@@bobbyokeefe4285 True, although a few reviews of the film do exist online. You can find them. And yeah, it's definitely not the $20 million (or $10 million) budget movie he intended, but hey, he seems content with the end result. But as for the new Birdemic trilogy he's announced... ehhh, I dunno about that.
Years after the cult phenomenon of 'Birdemic', VICE host Evan Husney catches up with a director who is still haunted by his film's reception and desperate to restart his career.

na the fact that theez shitty rapperz are famus thatz some thing outta the twilight zone btw im not talkin about bronson
So well produced as always, thanks!
You get an A+ on this one. Really enjoyed it.
James Nguyen always wanted to purposely make a bad movie and cash in on the so bad it's good craze. Birdemic is his vain attempt at trying to become the next Tommy Wiseau, except Tommy Wiseau was actually sincere and honest when he made The Room and didn't expect the reaction it got. James Nguyen knew Birdemic was awful from day one and wanted it to have a cult following and you can tell from the glib and disingenuous tone that the movie has. When you watch scenes you can tell he was clutching at straws to try and hit as many home runs as possible with the endless boardroom clapping shots and the gif animated birds. You guys think you're catching lightning in a bottle when you're really being fooled by an opportunistic snake oil salesman. He wants to be the next Ed Wood but he's nowhere near as interesting or creative. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an incredibly long Andy Kaufman-esque prank, just hearing him talking about the movie and playing it up for the camera.
I really dont think he realized this was a bad movie. I have a friend like this who makes music and its a very similar situation.
“It makes you think um....
why did the eagles and vultures attack”
I love this dude 😂
That was the thriller aspect of the movie!
Offering the crew a beer when they get in his car, on camera no less, is so incredibly telling.
he was just so desperate for friends....
this guy is completely out of touch with reality.
It’s sad but slightly hysterical
@@nickyoung5309 It's not sad at all. Fuck Nguyen, a delusional moron, and everyone involved in this piece of shit.
@@countdracula1598 No, fuck YOU.
@@countdracula1598 Yeah, fuck you, he at least, ya know, tries.
He is achieving more while out of touch with reality than you. Lol. Your life is a joke.

I remember watching a behind the scenes video of Nguyen screaming at some guy out of anger. I don't think he's a very good guy when he doesn't get his way.
The quality of his movies remind me of school projects
Lol! True
Ryan Seckman, I've seen better school projects.
Except, it would be better
The room has nothing on this.
Well, they make shorts in school. This is a feature film. Don't forget that...
I love how he didn't clean his production car, make his life look any different or act fake just for the video. He's true to himself.
true to himself? he thinks he's a good director, how is that not lying to oneself?
@@tbewin1z143 In way he's actually good for making a movie that's so bad that's actually good.
It’s actually pretty sad. The only reason the film company bought the film was because they thought they could make money by making fun of it. And they did just did that. The “director” wanted to make it so badly that that he fell for the trap of believing any press is better than no press. Pretty sad.
I go to school with the kid in this movie😂 that's depressing
That is cool! Being in one of the worst films is pretty amazing.
***** yes I saw it, it is pretty bad, but not in the shameful light, I mean it is the best film ever along with the Room and plan 9 from outer space.
The moment he offered the passengers beers I knew that I really liked this guy.
There’s just something so simple and genuine about that
His trouble is that he's looking for success rather than just making movies for enjoyment
No, he's trouble is being incompetent.
Simon Vs The World hahaha
I'm actually really happy that his arrogance prevented him from getting a 20 million dollars deal
Yeah, me too. Some comments here are about feeling sorry for the guy's delusion but I am annoyed at his incredible arrogance!
you hater
This is a GREAT documentary, I am so glad they didn't show James as a joke, but as someone who is simply obsessed with his dream at a unrealistic level.
this guy is completely delusional, I almost feel bad for him. He doesn't realize the only reason he was able to get distribution because of the documentary crew. Then he said he went to the self taught Alfred Hitchcock school of film making. I feel bad because the dude has the delusion that people really like the movie and he truly believes he's made a masterpiece film, when in reality the only reason people watch it is to laugh at how awful it is and to see for themselves if the movie is as bad as everyone says. This guy makes Tommy Wiseau look like Scorsese, and this movie makes "The Room" look like Citizen Kane. Good god this poor guy needs a dose of reality and maybe a few sessions with a therapist.
12:10 He knows.
When he claims to love Hitchcock's films and yet doesn't realise that his films doesn't even comes close to those, one has to wonder what does he actually think what makes a good movie good.
"this guy is completely delusional" you mean as opposed to every other film director... :P
He made a sequel lampooning the first film.
for me Birdemic is one of my favorite movies , i watched it without knowing all this cult , i hadn't nothing to do in that moment , so i searched on google worst film of all time then there it was "Birdemic" i've never laugh so much about a movie.
The film might not be what we all expect, but his aspirations and ways he goes about achieving it, is priceless.
Nguyen: makes you think... [pauses]
Me Thinking: He's gonna repeat the same thing they just said about the environment and mankind's effects.
Nguyen: Why the hawks are attacking.
One step in a good direction and then two steps back.
Poor man
I saw "Birdemic" and I was amazed by it. I always pictured a really passionate guy at the helm of the movie, who made up for his lack of talent with sheer effort. This guy is not what I expected.
Why in the fuck did the eagles and vultures attack ?!?!
JOHN WAYNE because movie
"Because it's a movie" I believe was his exact quote when the lead actress asked the exact same question.
GLOBAL WARMING
Feels to me like they tried to help him, but he didn’t want the help. He’s become a joke director.
He was conditioned for that, he got constant hate over his movie and kept going and it paid off big time, so now his ego and past prepared him to just ignore anyone who doesn’t go with his gut
it reminds me to yanderedev
"you can drink the beer, but keep it low guys" lol
"... y'know."
"When u were in junior high i was in hollywood" xd
lol but the guy was in hollywood as well, james was trying to establish an ego just said it wrong
His family lived through the Vietnam war and he doesn't want to make a short film??? A ton of ideas right there
If he shoots the movie in Canada and has an all Canadian cast he can get around 30% of his movie paid for
Also at a 50% discount.
Also he'd need to spend twice the money to travel his equipment and cast there and theres little to no infrastructure as Canada is not known for movies. He could cast whoever he wants and hire an all New Mexico crew and save 30% here too which is a lot closer. That's why breaking bad was shot here.
@@rafaeltorre1643 I think they're making fun of Canadian taxes dude...
@@ispartacus1337 Exactly how is him saying if he has an all Canadian cast and gets 30% of it paid for making fun of Canadian taxes? He is saying they will get a tax break. Is that the joke? Haha in Canada you can get a tax break by filming a movie? Very hilarious.... Is he making fun of high tax rates or lower? It's a program to get a tax break and has nothing to do with Canadian taxes in general. 30% is the average tax break for filming out of California. We are talking about a tax break to get someone to film a movie and spend money there. Not about Canadian taxes and how taxes in Canada is somehow funny. "Dude".
@@rafaeltorre1643 apparently I struck a nerve. I stand by my assumption though.
"It's about eagles and vultures attacking a small town."
Ah yes, the small town of San Francisco
You know what, at least this guy is fucking actually doing something- and trying to live out his dreams. Most people don't even get close to that. Most spend their lives wishing, without trying. Good for you James Nguyen! You already accomplished more than many.

This was a bit tough to watch. James is pretty delusional, but I feel really bad for the guy
so tough
You can tell just by watching this 30 minute video he's more than likely a pretty bad alcoholic
I sort of did until the phone conversation with Evan about Paramount and a sequel to Birdemic. The guy just seem arrogant, which obviously feeds his delusion.
I don't know if it's the last laugh though. Not sure if I'd want to be the constant butt of everyone's joke. After a while that Birdemic money won't be as lucrative anymore and that movie in itself seems like a one trick pony. The sequel had such self-awareness that it just wasn't as goofy in charm like the first one.
Wiseau is a character himself. Even without The Room the guy could probably bank off just being an eccentric and strange dude with mysterious ways of funding his projects.
Nguyen is just a delusional man.
Life gave him lemons, but he wanted to make Birdemic 3

So you want the real thing don't u?
Tommy Waseau vs James Nguyen
I feel sorry for Nguyen, he has no idea that People are making fun of him and his movie.
lol same poor guy
Jack Rad Well it does make you mentally impaired.
I think he does realise but to be fair to him I doubt many could have done much better with the avaliable resources he had back then
It's not so much making fun of him, it's making light of the film itself, but really it's become ironic satire. It's pretty great. So bad it's good. He seems like a great dude imo, weird, but that isn't always bad.
+S Miller oh he could have made it much better. he should have let the actors interpret the lines. he could of taken a Jaws type approach to avoid those horrible cg birds, only showing the aftermath of the bird attacks. also just edit it less awkwardly.
As an aspiring director I wish I had the insane determination this guy has. I mean, it's a double edged sword, this guy is a laughing stock of the internet and the film industry, he's even more delusional than Tommy Wiseau. However, I appreciate the fact that he took a couple thousand that he saved up from his boring and lifesucking job to make his passion project, even if it was horribly misguided.
That level of determination tempered by a healthy dose of self awareness.
I sort of felt sympathy for him at the beginning but I really couldn't by the end. The guy might be determined but it seems like he wants all the glory without putting in the work (I want to be in a rock band, I just don't want to learn how to sing or play an instrument). This became very obvious in how he reacted about the suggestion of making a short film ("I don't do short films"). Like how does he think guys like Del Toro, Nolan, Inarritu, etc. got where they are? Like I kind of understand his rush due to his age but it should be about the experience not winning awards.
"horribly misguided" ; i would say ir was a decent success both economically and from the point of view that he realized one of his dreams.
I think that over time Tommy realized why people like his film and he embraced the fact that it is awful. James on the other hand...
That's how I feel as well
the part where he tells them to drink in the car and watch out for cops haha this guys crazy i kinda like him
right! what a badass

At that part I'm like, "Wow, this guy is awesome."
Sounds like your the guy in the documentary, sorry man nice try with the movie
+FattyMcFatterson reprobates like you shouldn't be allowed to have internet privileges. You obviously can't handle it. You are one degenerate piece of shit
His biggest mistake was talking about paramount before closing the deal with them. If he was able to keep a secret, he might have been able to make the movie he's always wanted to make.
he should've made a deal with weinstein
It wasn’t going to happen.
Definitely. That just makes both look bad. Makes Paramount look bad because now the critics are gonna say about Paramount, "oh hey Paramount takes favour in 'terrible' films" and his movie ends up looking bad for losing a deal with a million dollar company that couldve possibly been a help for him. And then sorta ruins his own rep making it look like he brags about stuff.
Alex Chu yes it was
and he gets advice not to do this and insults the guy advising him!
If only more actually competent people had the confidence and drive of this guy.
there are and they all live in hollywood
This is a great example the Dunning Krueger effect where the dumber you are the more ineffective you are at self evaluation
He is competent, you have to understand he (and im sure his parents contributed a bit) funded this himself, imagine you wrote a solid script like him, and then on your own budget and your own computer with whatever knowledge you could pull off the web, decided to actually make it. Its a hard thing to do especially with that old computer, he had (still has some but will forever be haunted by bad career choices) potential. He should have made his second film more seriously without announcing to the heavens he had a movie deal lol and continued down that path, put in time, get a few movies under his belt, and maybe came back to the sequel as like a comedic project to produce to follow up on what got his name out there. However im not an actor/agent/producer so I really don’t know and this is just my opinion.
@@nickd3157 I respect him for his commitment and his resourcefulness, but he is not competent at all, the screenplay of birdemic is not solid at all, at that doesn't require any resource but competence, there are plenty of low to zero budget films which are made with actual competence

If we are gonna go so far as saying the dude is delusional then it's not like you can really blame the guy. People like James Nguyen and Tommy Wisseau are like personifications of many creative, passionate people’s worst fears. Many suffer from imposter syndrome where they think they’re just faking it rather than having any actual talent. While working at their craft, a deep insecurity takes over and they start wondering if they’re just wasting their time and if their talent and skill is really just on the level of the likes of this guy. It’s truly scary. That’s why it’s important to get feedback, take constructive criticism, and actually take the craft seriously by learning and receiving training.
Every aspiring filmmaker should watch Tim Burton's Ed Wood, the documentary Electric Boogaloo (about Cannon Films), the documentary Best Worst Movie (about Troll 2), and this short documentary to fully contemplate on the genuine excitement and ultimate tragedy that can happen when passion and notoriety are prioritized before competency in art and business.
Ed Wood is strangely inspiring
thank you
The book which formed the basis of Ed Wood, "Nightmare of Ecstasy," which is a collecton of interviews from the people who know and worked with Wood, and the documentary, Flying Saucers Over Hollywood, are indespensible; you can learn so much more from bad film-makers than good ones.
+Derek Smallshorts So true. Reading or watching something great will only make you think about how great it is, or how impossible it is to achieve that level of greatness, or it’ll make you want to copy that formula without making it your own. It won’t help you develop your own voice. But something that’s not quite there, or something that’s flat out bad, that’ll make you go, “I can do that better," or, “How did they get that wrong?” And it’ll help you learn how to get it right. Sometimes the best ideas come from something terrible. As one of my favorite film bloggers states, "A picture is worth a thousand words. A bad picture is worth two thousand."
+BlueFox94 amen my brother, amen, the truest words

No body uses the word “egotistic” or “delusional” in this documentary, I found that interesting and odd.
I think everyone becomes aware of it shortly after coming across James, but it seems theres something likeable about him that makes you not want to burst his bubble. Kinda like 6ix9ine. He has some sort of a likeableness that lets him get away with a bit more than if it were someone else.
The fact that James lives in LA, drives a car that is non existent in my country, and managed to secure any sort of deal in LA for his movie tells me he must have some sort of charm, even if he is totally oblivious
@@LINCOLNMINAJ i agree, he may be oblivious about the craft of filmmaking but he still seems responsible and hardworking to maintain a stable life.

This is one of the most fascinating real life character studies I've seen in a long time. In minutes it swings between hillarious, painful, perplexing, awkward, aggravating and strangely up-lifting. One minute I want to laugh at Nguyen, then I feel bad for him, then angry and then I find an odd sort of admiration. It's like Husney said, there's something endearing about his sincerity. If you haven't seen "BIrdemic: Shock and Terror" Go watch it before you read the rest of this review or watch this documentary.
The laughter is what comes first. You can't not laugh at those clips from Birdemic. I'd forgotten just how many painfully laughably bad lines there are all delivered with confused wooden performances. Then I see Nguyen and realize I'm not just laughing at the film. I'm laughing at a person.
I start to feel bad for him because he seems so delusional. But little by little I get the sense that on some level he knows the film is a joke. When he's talking about the negative comments and how they don't matter, you can tell they really get to him and he's trying to convince himself otherwise. It almost seems like he can't admit it at this point even if he knows it was a train wreck. That all seems pretty tragic until you realize at the end of the day he gets to live out his fantasy of being a Hollywood big shot. He's even made money off his films. Is that really so pitiful?
That's where I start to get angry. How dare he be so lucky and become famous off of a terrible film when so many talented filmmakers go unnoticed! But lets think about it, did he really do anything wrong to earn this paradoxical mix of success and failure? He got to this point through sincerity, hard work, and persistence. Aren't we all told those are good qualities to have? His marketing strategy was actually rather clever. He invested in himself in order to make this movie. It would be one thing if he just conned his relatives into putting up the budget (as many sleazy talentless low budget filmmakers do). Instead he put his own money on the line (not to mention his reputation which he kind of ruined). He devoted six months of his life to the project. It didn't hurt anyone. It made a lot of people laugh. It made me laugh. I had a great time watching Birdemic.
There's a sort of bizarre hope mixed into it all. Maybe there's a lesson we can all learn from Nguyen. Maybe some of us just need a little more persistence to achieve our goals. Maybe we're just one clever promotional tactic away from making the connection that will change our lives. Maybe staying sincere, optimistic and true to yourself really can get you to a better place, if not quite the place you intended.

I agree with you.
Take into account the following: Hollywood producers are all (and i mean ALL of them) from the same cultist satanic religion or pseudo-phylosophy where everything, apart from cosmetic differences is one and the same. All scripts from Hollywood movies, all actors, are monitored and modified if it goes against a narrative.
On the other side, we have this man, which is a delusional guy who self-financed a bad movie ; but at least it is authentic. Something Hollywood lost a long time ago.
This authenticity is what drives some people into his ridiculously-low-budget film.

I was contacted by a major Hollywood studio that will remain nameless for now but trust when I say it's MAJOR. I'd say its PARAMOUNT even
I feel bad, that ICM guy was the only person who actually tried to help James and give him good advice. He didn't tell him he'll never be a legitimate filmmaker, but he also didn't lie to his face and tell him Birdemic was a good movie.
I think that's the most humane way you can deal with these "so bad they're good" filmmakers. You gotta be honest with them about how their movies are, but also encourage them to use the attention to go back to the basics, learn to be a real filmmaker, and start with short films. The bottom line is, it's never too late for anyone to chase their dreams. These guys just need to be brought back to reality.
With Nguyen, you have to tell him the bitter truth!!! People nowadays need to grow some ball$!!!
I think Nguyen probably has zero talent in film making. He doesn't seem to have the feel for how to tell a story, make dialogue or anything required to make a passably good film.
@@rokkvi1 definitely true. I don't see him making a 5-million-dollar indie feature that is nuanced and entertaining. Sure, anything is possible, but he would have to do an insane amount of personal work to be able to direct with that kind of voice. But I can say, as a filmmaker, my first short film was god awful. Zero subtext, poorly directed, bad sound, bad editing. But every film I've made since then has been better than the last one. Not to plug, but you can watch the trailer for my latest film on my channel. I went from making unwatchable student films to stuff I'm very proud of. My point is, if James actually took an honest look at what he did and spent 10 years making short films, he could get to a point where he can make an actually watchable short film. He'd need to do less, though. Less dialogue, less action, just tell a simple story.
I agree that sometimes, someone who seems to totally suck at their art can eventually become good at it. It is not always obvious whether someone has the potential to become good eventually or not. I think with movies it is just so easy to fail, even if you do have talent, because just one aspect being bad can ruin a movie. No movie is good if the sound, lighting, filming or acting is totally bad for example. For some film makers like Nguyen, Wiseau, Breen etc. I just think they are so fundamentally out of touch with humanity that they couldn't make good stories people could ever relate to or care about in an honest way, just laugh at out of absurdity.
@@rokkvi1 Yes, unfortunately it is something about them and their world view. The ironic cult following their films get makes it worse. They can convince themselves that what they made is actually good because people are paying money to watch it. This blocks them from facing reality and growing from their mistakes. Neil Breen is the only filmmaker I've seen that has gotten worse with every film he makes.
i really admire this guy for sticking with his guns and making the movie he wanted to make, even if it wasn't good. though his ego is what troubles me. I also have the dream of being a big director and making films but one thing i am always keeping in mind of his ego, as that is what tends to destroy people.

As an editor and ghost writer, I have to deal all the time with people who think they're very good writers, oblivious to the fact that they're actually clueless and awful. This poor man honestly can't see the difference in quality between what he put together and a real, competently done movie.
The key to flim making is u have to know how take criticism. And try to improve has much as u can.
@@alexthemoviemanoutofmymind7897 Exactly. You have to be teachable. Even his body language in the thumbnail image (arms crossed) says "Nope. I'm gonna do everything my way. Nobody's going to tell me what to do. I'm the boss".
And that's a great attitude to have IF you have the knowledge, skills and competence to back it up. You don't get that without going to school for it. I don't know how much he invested in this movie but he should have invested every penny of that into film school.
But he followed his dream 😂 nobody wants to realize their dream was just that and it's time to face reality.
The moment he said he wanted to make an film that won awards and drive Ferraris I knew his story was over. The people who make award winning movies just make MOVIES, and it helps that they are great. The people who drive Ferarris didn't get them by wanting Ferraris, they were byproducts of hard work and being talented at something. This guy will forever be the Birdemic Guy and drive a Prius.
Birdemic 3: Sea-gle. The depressing and sad reality of his delusion is unbelievable. Hes just stuck in his own world and won't take a hint even when its laid out crystal clear in front of him.
