In just this series of videos, I’ve re-learned so much about setting weapons zero and targeting principles. It had been 40 years since I worked a navy rifle range. Your explanations are clear, concise, fact-based, and logical. Everything you’ve said makes sense. Thanks for sharing a bit of your extensive expertise.

I'm 100% with you on combat accuracy vs. target accuracy. I went through the police academy in the early nineties, had guys that could shoot bullseye's all day long standing still with no stress. When the scenario changed and we started to move and shoot and stress was added to the mix those same guy's quickly became some of the worst shooters in the class. I could care less about target accuracy with my carry pistols, that's not what will win a gunfight. I don't believe 3 shots in a half dollar size will deliver as much damage as 3 shots in different areas of the torso. I got my 507c zeroed yesterday, my first pistol optic. Pretty quick and easy and I really like it and can see where it has it's advantages. Still won't give up on Irons though, but the optic is pretty badass. Thank you for your videos Jason, I feel you've taken my shooting to a new level.

A s a cop, speed and accuracy count. Speed because we are mostly behind the eight ball on most shootings. Accuracy because we are held liable for every bullet leaving your gun.Great videos I appreciate the information.

As a retired American LE professional with 31 yrs experience, he's spot on regarding the closeness and timing of 99% of shootings. It happens so fast that you're not even thinking about your sight - you're reacting instinctively - point shooting (especially 5 yards) multiple rounds while moving hopefully to cover close by....PRACTICE efficient, smooth draws (smooth is fast)

LOVE YOUR SHOW!!!! Due to all body and head armor nowadays i no longer train 2 to the chest. I train 1 to the chest (basically stun) and then go straight to the hip area. Instinctive shooting is a must. Take your sights completely off, place a white paint dot on the back of your slide or hammer and train train train from point blank to up to 15 yards. Its both aggravating and fun. If you cant present your gun in a consistent manner than you aint ready for instinct shooting in my opinion. Meaning once you present your weapon if you have to hunt your red dot then id work on that. My fiancé and I have targets all over the house that we present and dry fire on all the time. We have basically turned our home into a CQB environment. Again, love your channel and thanks for all the great advice and help! 🍻

I appreciate the real life scenario. I always tell people there are several different types of shooting. Specifically, competition shooting and real world. Competition shooting is all muscle memory and repetitive. The targets are not moving and always in the same place, same distance. I get people that want to always shoot sub MOA or pin point. I say if you can hit constantly within a 8 to 10 inch circle you are good.

I’m glad to see someone put this in perspective. Marksmanship is great for mastering the fundamentals, but gunfights don’t happen slowly and relaxed. In the Marine Corps I qualified out to 500 yards. But in practical application we set our BZO (Battle Sight Zero) to 300 yards. What that meant was that I could accurately hit anything from point blank out to about 500 yards if I had time to aim, but I could at least get a hit on a man sized target out to about 300 yards just by looking over the top of the barrel. Years of training exercises proved to me that this was effective combat marksmanship. Anything that hurts your enemy before he can hurt you is a win.

I really like this video sir, it just reinforces what I've always been taught. I have learned a lot from your red dot videos because even going thru basic and being in the PA National Guard ( including basic) we never used red dots we were always taught and trained with iron sights and then when I purchased my p365 it came with a red dot and thats when I really got interested in using it and I was having difficulty transitioning and I found I had some fundamental issues and you really helped me realize what they were and I was able to correct them almost 100% so thankyou and keep doing what your doing. I hear and see a lot of guys trying to be as precise as they possibly can be and that's just not practical in self defense because it's obviously a lot easier to hit a stationary target at the range then being in real life with a moving target and other moving parts that aren't involved in the fight i.e civilians trying to get away. I really appreciate your videos and I really hope that some day I can join you on a range and learn even more

  • @tbaylo4034

As a 19+ year LEO and firearms instructor, I completely agree with combat accuracy. People do need to realize that bullseye shooting is necessary to hone the fundamentals, but don’t get wrapped around the axle that when you start shooting at a faster pace or self-induced stress your group size opens up. Think about it this way - if you need to stop a bad guy, ten shots through the same hole is no better than one shot on dude. More holes are likely to stop dude faster. If you only shoot tight groups then you aren’t testing yourself and you are shooting too slow. Pick up the pace to an acceptable level of spread and slow down when it gets too big. Keep practicing and you will eventually get your groups small again at a faster pace. It’s an ongoing cycle. Great stuff, keep it up!

I love it. When I’m at the range I think of the tight groupings but when i see the results and I’m hitting the lower torso and extremities. neck shots etc. My thought is if this were a real life situation those misses still were affective and neutralizing the threat.

Awesome series Sir. Training, mindset and knowing the holds is what I got out of this series instead of constantly switching between 10 or a 25 yard zero. I did some running and gunning/ induced stress ( sprints and push ups) with a ten yard zero and at 5 to 25 yard targets its been within a 12 inch circle. Thank you Sir.

I've commented on your channel before how getting old and my eye sight isn't like before. Your videos have brought my shooting back to the fun I had when I was younger. When I hit what I was aiming at. Finally, I can hit what I'm aiming again. So much better, thanks for that! Finding your channel - game changer! You're a great person, God & Family, great American! Combative shooting to me has always been in the high 8/tombstone in the size of a fist. While there is a time and place for 3x5 lights out shot a disciplined shooter should know how to throttle between them and use the appropriate tool for the task at hand. Not only great content in all your videos, but an overall mindset of your teaching is much appreciated.

I bow hunt and gun hunt. This really is not much different. You want your shots in the kill zone the same as a 9 inch plate. Doesn’t matter if it’s up down left right, as long as in the plate. It’s not 3d target point shooting. It’s killing the animal and putting food on the table or getting home safe by hitting the plate. Great info. Killed many deer with a shot in plate that wasn’t a marksman shot, but no one told the deers vitals. Great info Frogman. Learning a ton from you. Mindset also

Have you checked out the USCCA curriculum yet? They talk about a similar thing. They do not have degrees of accuracy and it’s not about having tight shot groupings. It’s more like a pass/fail, with an 8 inch box in high center chest and an 8 inch box in the pelvic girdle. Anything inside the box is considered effective, anything outside the box is considered ineffective.

I 100% agree with all thats stated! I don’t care if I’m shot n pinky toe it’s slowing me down, without a doubt. A hit is a hit.. Clint Smith teaches chest and pelvic girdle

I go with the 25yrd zero since I live in the country with more open space. More accuracy is needed at 25yrd. And anything under, the offset is almost non existent in my experience on the range.

Ex GM1 here. Great videos! Here's my question. On my 16 inch barrel .556 AR with 1 x 6 lpo w/daylight bright red dot, where do I zero the red dot? I currently have it zeroed at 75 yds what should take me out to maybe 150 yds before she drops much. For close combat I figure I'm about 2" low. Should I zero for close-quarters or aim a bit high close for that 75 - 150 yd sweet spot?

      Watch this video.
At the end of the day you can zero 25-300 and hit a target easy inside that yardage. Don’t worry about 2”3” low or high. That’s nonsense. 2” above or below the heart is a show stopper, end of story. 🙏

It's damn sure helping me & I thank you.
I use my pistol & dot set up more for hunting applications on the Ranch but I do carry & if put in a Self Defense situation?
This helps, I'm throwing rounds to the chest, I don't care where the rounds hit, as long as the threat goes down & myself, family or friends don't.
I don't care about punching out a 1/2" inch dot at 25y. I'll try though, lol

So a 25 yard zero is best for defensive shooting ?

So over correcting on the dial for the zero? After 2 shots then dial it up and go with it? Not sure what you meant exactly. I had way too much pre work out 5 years ago lol.

I suppose a threat at 50 yards out (with a rifle) would pose an imminent threat. If that weapon were now a handgun, would you be facing an imminent threat? I'm not sure about that.

My only thoughts about any real world use of MOA groups is for developing your aiming skills, and to possibly aid in intended target strikes. I can't recall what law enforcement terms a fired bullet that hits a non-threat individual. But in a high stress environment like Jason spent a good deal of his life, there will sometimes be collateral damage, but with the people SEALs are dealing with, those would usually be bonus hits.

What ear pro are you using? I’ve run electronic Peltors for years but thinking about switching to something like that for pistol. Recently took a 14hr defensive pistol class and those over the ear muffs started to suck after a while.
