Correct me if I'm wrong, but we all should keep in mind that if we're using the RD on our CC firearm that we need to zero with our defense ammo and not our social ammo.
@@jg9764 in theory I’d agree that the same grain bullet would land where your carry ammo would as well, but you never know until you test it. Another good reason to test your carry ammo at the range is to make sure it cycles properly and not assume it’ll run flawlessly.
@@jg9764 My only thing with hollow Vs defensive ammo and grain weight is that the defensive ammo is usually loaded to a hotter spec with more FPS and that might effect your POI. 165gr HST in .40 S&W is 1130 fps and the basic 165gr range ammo I about is noticeably slower. Same with the 180gr stuff.
I spent 25 yrs in LE and only used a red dot on my rifle. I'm finally transitioning to one on my EDC, after a lot of back and forth, much for the same reasons you mentioned. Thanks for the video.

I did all the ballistics calculations based on the 124gr bullets I use... use a ballistic calculator. I found that a 7 yard zero gives me a +2 inches at 50 yards and a -2 inches at 100 yards. When you zero at 25 yards most 9mm bullets will be -10 inch to -16 inches at 100 yards. With my PMC 124gr FMJ cartridges I can put the dot on center A zone anywhere from 5 yards out to 100 yards and I’m in the A Zone +/-2inches from my dot. At a class at CTA in Piru CA on a break down by range 17 I started hitting the 8” steel gongs that are up in the hills with ease. When we range finded to them, they were 105 to 125 yards from where I was standing... I was just putting the dot on the steel. Also with the standard circle and dot Holosun reticle, the 3 yard zero is exactly at the bottom hash mark of the circle when I zero at 7 yards. With the ACSS reticle, the 3 yard zero is at the bottom of the Chevron. If I change the ammo I am using and the length of barrel then my zero will need to change. With my Glock 34 I need to zero at 9 yards with the holosun 507 to achieve the same results. Also different optics that have different height over bore will change where you zero.

I am going to practice more before I carry. I am a novice to pistols, so I wear cheaters to read, and just want to know if it’s better for me to learn the iron sights first or just go right to a red dot. For EDC and a hunting pistol possibly.
I own both a Holosun 507C and a Holosun 515GM. Unlike the 515GM and the Trijicon RMRs... the 507C can't be adjusted without the special tool. However... the tube style 515GM and all Trijicon optics can be adjusted with the extractor lip of a spent shell. This is super handy, if for some reason your optic gets screwed up in the field. I'm not sure why Holosun didn't add the larger features to the 507C to enable this. It makes total sense.
I usually zero my pistols at 15 but i put a 1" circle on the target so i have a precise aiming spot. I'm thinking about changing my zero to 10 tho but with a 15 yard zero it is zeroed around 50 yards also so that is why i picked 15 so you can just aim at the a zone and hit in the a zone from 1 to 50 yards without worrying about your off set other than precise shot placement.
How often are shooting out to 50yds with a handgun? I’m getting back in to pistol shooting with my new 10mm that I’m hiking with. I usually only target shoot to out 10 maybe 15yds max. I can’t imagine a 50yd shot with confidence.
@jspears2320 ..50 yards with a red dot on a man size torso is easy shooting..I can hit 6inch circle plates with irons at 50 ...about 50 percent of my shots
One other suggestion: get a laser boresight system and use it. I picked up one that was relatively inexpensive and have used it on multiple handguns. After doing the laser boresight, every firearm has been dead on at the range.
@@frogmantactical Understood, and I wouldn't trust it without confirming everything at the range. And my system also has issues with any barrel shorter than about 4". The big thing is to make sure that, after you get a zero with the laser, you pull it out and rotate it 180 degrees, and then move the aimpoint halfway. Basically the same way we used to boresight Abrams tanks back in my much younger days. And, if nothing else, it ensures I'm on the paper right from the get-go. Your system (obviously) works too, and I expect you've got more experience with yours than I have with mine. Thanks much for the video!
@Frogman Tactical hey Sailor I like you am a left handed shooter. I'm having one heck of a time finding good left handed optics/flashlight ready holsters any links you could point me towards? Love your channel keep passing the knowledge! S/F!
Step one. Buy $10 laser bore sight. . Step 2 make the dot on your optic match the dot from the bore sight. You should probably check it, but it will be zero'd.
That’s what I do then I fine tune it at the range. It probably saves me a few rounds in ammo and it gets you on target. Bore sight isn’t 100% accurate in regards to where bullets actually land but they get you about 90% there.
I don’t know why but when I was sighting in my competition pistol with the holosun I had issues. My process normally was to use the bore laser first to get close @ 7 yards then I normally shoot offhand to finish sighting in. This time I decided to use a bench rest to take out any variables. I still don't understand why I had such crazy inconsistencies when using the rest vs offhand. I put the pic rail on the Y section and used my two hands to rest on the base pad. I had the barrel level with my hands and everything but I was very inconsistent.
One eye or both eyes? Red dots on rifles I have no problems, but I have a crimson trace on my canik and it’s giving me fits ! I’m 40 and never used a red dot on a pistol
I’m new to this, but why can’t you just stick a laser in the barrel and point it at the target and line up the red dot to it? Seems like it would work just fine.
You can. Some of them are not good and the battery life is not long either. The problem still is stability and accuracy for people trying to shoot. Even after you aight in with a laser you should always confirm.
Really good vid supper simple👍🏾 Man you really hit a few key points when zeroing, like using the various distance and bring the right tool, *user manual.
This literally changed my perspective on red dot zeroing. Im not the best at it. I have a Trijicon MRO on lay away now for work. This is definitely something that im putting in my toolbox. The unorthodox zeroing that I have seen for pistols just doesnt make sense to me. Co-witnessing does, you're not alway gonna be at the 25 yard line with the shot. The hold over is a thing, but its intimidating if youre behind the gun in a stressful situation. Without the million reps you need on the range, its a little sketchy. I know the hold over from rifle to pistol doesnt fully relate!'
Rumor from someone I know in the industry is holosun is making a 509tx2 with the acss reticle. No release date yet that I've heard. But heads up for all the guys that love the acss but want it in an enclosed emitter
Hi FrogMan - love your videos. My only wish was at 9:37 I was really hoping you'd explain to us the actual adjustments on the optic since you were hitting low and right. I have been confused as there's conflicting information online about moving your dot to the group or moving the group to your dot. Low and right - did you adjust it up and left? My thinking with those adjustments would move the dot up and left so even further away from the grouping. Sorry for the confusion!
Thx for the video man ! My eyes are starting to get bad too lol so this is good timing and advice to nip it in the bud now while I still can train with it competently. But back to the topic at hand; I always noticed the digital reticles can easily disappear by just looking/holding at a slight angle in any direction damn near ; almost feels like the sensitivity to the cant is a bit more than say a rifle scope. But maybe I just need to jump in and try to learn from here. Sweet cant wait for ur next vids brother thx ! 🤘🔥
I just pick a distance (mine is 7 yards) and then put in my bore laser and match the dot to the laser. Then I know any movement is in my presentation or trigger control. The laser bullets are less than $20 shipped from Amazon.
i find dots maddening! what if the dot isnt near the post yet zeroed? n irons are zeroed..... n why r my romeo RDS adjustmnt screws so hard to turn almost like they r broken, n sog installed mine
In a crisis Understress and your life is in danger do you have time to aim your weapon or point-and-shoot? I think you should practice 5-10 yards point in shoot
I maybe wrong but from the looks of your grouping it’s spot on left to right . I think you should of adjusted the vertical base on how low the group was at 15 yards.

Red Dots Are Cumbersome & Draw Can Be Far More Difficult To Aquire Target Acquisition. You Will Need Larger Holster. End Of Day Its Up To Who Is Behind Trigger & Run Alot Of Drills/Practice.
Question - at the 25 yrd line...the 3 shots were 'low' wouldn't I go ahead and adjust my red dot UP so it would hit center on the target? or did I miss something? Thank you.
Why would you adjust? The difference at any zero out to 25 yards is no more than 3”-4”. You aren’t that good of a shot under dynamic stress and those shots are still kill shots regardless of what anyone tells you. 🙏
So maybe I missed something.. but what about the verticle adjustments.? You were low everytime. Is that something thats adjusted by optic, or just shooting fundamentals?
I totally agree on the point of not carrying a red dot on a CCW gun until one is absolutely proficient incl. muscle memory and having in mind quality of your eyes/sight picture. I see that kids learn directly and only to shoot with red dots on rifles and handguns directly. But what if some unexpected happens to the optic and Murpheys law bumps in. The parallel training pf both is a great thing 👌🏻
Great instructional video. I own 3 Holosun, but I cheated. I used boresight lazer and range finder. Takes about 15 minutes in the back yard at dusk. Just match the dots and you are done. I set mine at 20 yards.

East Texas here! Great video with good info, I've got a S&W M&P 9mm 2.0 4" with suppressor sights and TLR 7. I just ordered a Holosun 407c-gr x2 2moa green dot. It will be here tomorrow, and I'm like a kid at Christmas 😆 I shoot strictly iron on my pistols, but I'm getting a little age on me. Thanks foe the info👍
Best dot video I have watched. It's just what I needed and agree with all you said my friend

I have had good luck using a bore sight laser to zero my rifle optics. Is there a reason you didn't suggest that for pistol optics?
Old days they sucked. They broke easy and the battery died after about 10 seconds. I personally don’t use them due to keeping up with and maintaining it.
It’s definitely a good option if you feel you need it. 🙏
Thanks for the quick reply. Good info on your channel.

Thank you for the video! I appreciate your input. Looking to jump into using a holosun.
I am going to practice more before I carry. I am a novice to pistols, so I wear cheaters to read, and just want to know if it’s better for me to learn the iron sights first or just go right to a red dot. For EDC and a hunting pistol possibly.
Super precision shooters, like myself, not only shoot at the bottom of our breath... But also between heartbeats.
True professionals like me also adjust every shot depending on the gravitational pull of the moon.

Agreed. Most are solid out to 50.

I’m not too big on those. Haven’t had any luck with them however that was 10+ years ago.
Getting ready to make this transition my self , thank you for the information 👊🏻
Great information Jason! Will be employing this methodology into my zero! Semper Fidelis Sailor!
🙏
@Frogman Tactical hey Sailor I like you am a left handed shooter. I'm having one heck of a time finding good left handed optics/flashlight ready holsters any links you could point me towards? Love your channel keep passing the knowledge! S/F!
Step one. Buy $10 laser bore sight. . Step 2 make the dot on your optic match the dot from the bore sight. You should probably check it, but it will be zero'd.
Zeroing from barrel isn’t 100% accurate but it’ll hit a human sized target 🤷🏾♂️
Not a bad idea.. do that first and then go to an indoor gun range to fine tune is probably a very effective way to go abt it
That is better than the information on this video😂
That’s what I do then I fine tune it at the range. It probably saves me a few rounds in ammo and it gets you on target.
Bore sight isn’t 100% accurate in regards to where bullets actually land but they get you about 90% there.
Somehow I lost my tool to zero my red dot before I even took it out and I have small tools to do it with, but I can’t get the dang things to turn lol
Both eyes open. Watch my “Eye Dominance” video if you are having issues.

great video, new to dots as well... I just wish you would have shown the perspective thru the dot, and also what you did with the sight alignment.
Simple and to the point. Thank you for your time and effort.

Great pick with the G48, it’s a great firearm. 👍🏻
Yes it is.
Really good vid supper simple👍🏾
Man you really hit a few key points when zeroing, like using the various distance and bring the right tool, *user manual.
Thank you frogman, just bought a red dot.
Next video I’m laying out the zero’s on paper for everyone to see. It’s going to be interesting.
Just put a 407k on my P365XL! Took the RomeoZero off because I can't find any info if it is waterproof or not...
Send it to me and we will test it out and see if it is. 😂 🙏
Rumor from someone I know in the industry is holosun is making a 509tx2 with the acss reticle. No release date yet that I've heard. But heads up for all the guys that love the acss but want it in an enclosed emitter
That will be nice. I don’t keep up with them at all.

They are. There are a few test optics in the hands of some RUclipsrs for testing. Haven’t
seen any videos on how they’re doing yet.
I JUST GOT ONE
Hi FrogMan - love your videos. My only wish was at 9:37 I was really hoping you'd explain to us the actual adjustments on the optic since you were hitting low and right. I have been confused as there's conflicting information online about moving your dot to the group or moving the group to your dot. Low and right - did you adjust it up and left? My thinking with those adjustments would move the dot up and left so even further away from the grouping. Sorry for the confusion!
Thanks for the video. All this tells me to just use irons.
I spent 2 years in Comfort off of Mill Dam Road!!
That’s why I run co witness or nothing outside of a 10 yard zero.

Also a good idea to have someone help with zeroing who is a better shot than yourself. You can’t dial in a red dot if you can’t shoot to begin with!
Great vid as always, I'm looking forward to the next one.
🙏
In a crisis Understress and your life is in danger do you have time to aim your weapon or point-and-shoot? I think you should practice 5-10 yards point in shoot
Great video, but did I miss which way you adjusted the red dot? That’s where I get confused all the time.
I maybe wrong but from the looks of your grouping it’s spot on left to right . I think you should of adjusted the vertical base on how low the group was at 15 yards.
I have always had great luck user a bore sight.
They are definitely an option.

one training class the instructor suggested i go with a red dot because I'm far sighted. Tried orange front sight first. Tried reddot and now all my pistols have them. HIGE improvement
6:19.... was waiting for micheal Jackson's song "beat it" to kick in.....
I’m a right hand my shoot manipulation is up to the left
Can you put the link up or send for the tool you use for adjustments? Thanks. Great video.
I may struggle a bit my local range is outdoor and only has 10yrds as the shortest distance I can go to put a target out
Thank you for sharing.I see a pattern: You shoot pretty good. Any comments on using bore lasers for horizontal alignment?
I feel like the dot doesnt move when i mess with it. I need to move it right some but doesnt seem to move at all
It doesn’t appear to but it corrects unless your optic is bad which is slim chances.
Adjust, supported shots, confirm visually.
@@frogmantactical im bringing it to the range this weekend ill test it out
How does SF soldiers deal with the noise of their firearma going off? Either their wearing something inside the ears, or they have eardrums of steel
When your saying “you are cowtinessed” are you referring to your Dot being co-witnessed with your irons ? And then you make the elevation adjustment ?
Thanks for the great info, as always!

What adjustment did you make? How many clicks?
Great instructional video. I own 3 Holosun, but I cheated. I used boresight lazer and range finder. Takes about 15 minutes in the back yard at dusk. Just match the dots and you are done. I set mine at 20 yards.
How many times did it take you to find the dot on a ready up, for me the dot was high Everytime hell i couldn't find it. Practice Practice and then get a a laser snapcap and practice some more. It works now drive it into the target.
None. I use co witness. Support the channel at

Like I said before I'm thinking about getting a optic but I still like iron sights better. I'll start training a little bit at a time when I get one.
What about possibly bore sighting a red dot optical is that an option?
Absolutely an option. I’ve never had much luck with them that’s why I don’t use them but many swear by them.
Hey stay out near comfort do u still go out to that range could use some help with zero in my red dot what would charge to maybe zero in my red dot on my pistol let me know thanks
You can schedule training for 2- 4 hours with Hayden to do that. Send an email to Bangarangindustries1776@gmail God bless.
To be clear, is your red dot optic in the middle of your view finder? Not on top of your front site?
Just found the channel. Have you done one for sighting red dot on your rifle? Just getting into the ar platform and slowly learning.
Great information ..Go Navy!!!!!!
Thanks, well explained, very useful vid.
I wonder about harmonics changes shooting supported vs unsupported
