As a German, I can tell you that this is Till's ultimate command tone. The other versions are nice requests. Here, when Till stands in front of you like a german oak and yells at you, you do what he says and try not to shit your pants.
The foil around the microphone is actually for the performance of a song called Asche Zu Asche from the first album. It's a pretty cool song with a unique stage element that I personally haven't seen on any other performance. This performance was the footage shown in the making of too!
Some thoughts: The thing with costumes being basic has many different reasons. I'm pretty sure long time fans have noticed that Till, Richard and Oliver often times don't wear a tank top or even a shirt during the second half of the show as it is simply super hot on stage by then. Ever since they started playing "Ich WIll" live it was always one of the very last songs on the setlist when everyone was already super sweaty. However if you watch "Links 2 3 4" from that same show, you can clearly see other band members (except for Till and Schneider) wearing more intricate costumes. "Links" back then was the 2nd song on the setlist and in most cases you do not break a lot of sweat during first 2 or 3 songs. Being a musician myself I know from experience how hot it gets (even without fire) with the stage lights constantly warming up the temperature. Designing more intricate costumes sometimes takes longer time than planned and as this particular concert at the time was only the fifth show out of 115 shows they played during MUTTER Tour from 2001 to 2002, it is clear that some elements of the show were still either in development phase or not 100 % perfect yet. Usually the first 5-10 shows are not that rehearsed and there is a lot of uncertainty and improvisation going on. However after doing the same thing night after night for months the overall performance gets into muscle memory and looks more polished. The same applies for the light show which is usually more detailed and in sync with the music during later shows of the tour. This video brings back a lot of great memories though. I really like that you go by chronological order 👏🏻 But probably you missed out „asche zu asche“ there they burn the microphones on this Tour (age). That why they got the aluminium foil around the mic 🤣.
Yeah the clothes are very basic! I don't know why, all the other performances I've seen, their clothes are amazing. I think they all have red hair in this? In earlier days, they were all dressed in silver with silver hair. The mics are covered for protection. I definitely recommend you check out Asche zu Asche, Völkerball and Big Day Out Festival versions are my favorites.
Someone mentioned in the comments that it was one of the first songs played in that concert so they haven't taken their clothes off yet, which was common in their earlier days. :) It makes sense to me. I have Asche zu Asche on my list.

Someone in the band found heaps of hair color very cheaply and then they all just went for it?? Must have been what happened with the silver era too lmao.
Lichtspielhaus is the name of an old rammstein dvd which contains their video clip and some live performances between 1996 and 2001, this is actualy the berlin verlodrom 2001 show (which was never released). they all dress in black with red hair, Ich will is played near the end of the show, that's why the costumes seem less elaborate, they took their clothes off (it's hot in there)
