  • If you're looking for a tough off-road machine, either of these 4WDs will do - but which one would you want to live with day-to-day? 👉Full Comparison Test:
The modern day large SUV is a hugely popular vehicle, effectively replacing the traditional wagon. And when it comes to large SUVs with genuine 4x4 capability and strong off-road chops, buyer appetites have never been bigger.
Which is where the Toyota LandCruiser and Land Rover Defender enter the frame.
Both are highly capable 4WDs, designed and engineered to tackle challenging terrain, the sort that would make a Toyota RAV4 quiver in fear. Both are possessed of plenty of ground clearance, locking diffs, good wading depths and several tech-based off-road aids, but the reality is that these vehicles will be driven more frequently on the road and in the concrete jungle - not the coniferous one.
So which is the better all-rounder, the better daily driver? A recent late-life update that adds key features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and more safety tech has put a spring in the step of the Toyota Prado. But the Land Rover Defender is an all-new machine with far superior technology. Does that make it the winner by default? Find out in our video comparison.

These things used to be tested to see how many straw bales, dead rotten sheep, rolls of fencing mesh you could get in them. When I heard that ""in everyday use, doing the school run, grocery shopping, cruising the highway"", it made me laugh ; Who would buy a Defender for that usage ? Damned, where is this all going ? We buy such trucks not for that, but for travelling to remote places where no ordinary car can drive you. And I would certainly never buy one of these new Defenders ..... I would be too afraid not to be able to return home. On the other hand, my Prado(s) have never ever let me down over the past 18 years ; 4 owned with 1KD FTV engine, above 1 000 000 kms overall (all 4 cumulated) ; My current one is a 2012 with 165000 kms, I'll keep it forever. Engine Oil and automatic trans oil change due next week!

      @@fredmarghem2120 it's just pathetic isn't it.
When I first had a Landcruise 55 back in 1980, you hardly saw 4x4s. A few Land Rovers, Range Rovers. Then occasional Patrol. But even a Range Rover then was still a basic truck inside.
Time moves on, but I think what angers me about the folks testing the new Defender is they just don't get the irony. When you have to 'request' the off road protection pack, or an axle diff lock on the successor to the old Defender and, other packs are the (I'm being facetious) Urban Pack, Dog Washing pack, and, no doubt, Shopping Comfort Pack, it's just marketing bullshit gone mad.
Just call it The Street Rover or something naff, forget an off road test and see how many of your kids friends can plug into USB sockets while going to the party.

I love my GX 460, bought it in July. I spent a ton of time on research and was specifically looking for a 200k+ mile capable vehicle coupled with low maintenance. I sold my 2009 Z71 4x4 Tahoe which had zero issues and comfortably logged 250k miles with very low maintenance issues. I wanted something with a little better gas milage, supreme reliability, and could handle its own when we go hunting and backpacking. Flopped back and forth between the Land Cruiser/LX 570 and the GX 460 (Land Cruiser Prado) but just couldn't justify the upfront cost and added cost of fueling. That said, when i saw that Land Rover was bringing out the new Defender, i was a tad anxious and wondered if i should have waited. Either way, I'm extremely pleased with my decision to go with the GX 460. I'm modeling it off of the Lexus GXOR concept. When I saw that Lexus just dropped the LX 570 J201 build, i was supper jealous. Lexus seems to finally be listening to their buyers. Anyways, great video. Cheers

Most modern cars are reliable, people should stop living in the past and spewing out old rubbish. The problem with the Prado is its old tech. If that doesn't bother you, then it's a solid car. But be warned, it drives like a truck, and the infotainment system needs kicking into the 21st century. Buy what you need, and only complain if it goes wrong. Happy decision making everyone.

Personnaly, I don't care if it does not have all the bells and whistles of the latest techs. Drives like a truck ? Well that's what it is ..... and that is just fine. We buy these Toyotas for that, and not for the latest infotainement system. Check out TFL and all the troubles they had with their brand new Defender(s). I've owned a 100 series and a Prado. I would take the Prado seven days a week and twice on Sundays. Land Rover reliability has always been poor and even the real Defender 100 (which this new one isn't) was tough as nails it was also unreliable but everyone knew its problems and how to fix them. There are so many electric gadgets and instruments in the 'Defender' and that translates to many things can (and will) break down the track.

Try 120k for the 6cly defender now, while the Prado VX is at 85k(i bought one of these) and the Kaka is 95k drive away. Also the VX drives better in my opinion, that kdss system is really strange and has a harshness to it. I have to wait around 1 months for my VX(got lucky, picked up someone else's cancelled order due to failed finance i was told) while it was a 12+month wait for the defender.
I also don't trust all the electronics long term in a defender.
I wouldn't really consider these to be suv's, they are 4WD with diff locks etc which really don't come in suv's.

If you are not going to go offroad (and I don't call a well maintained dirt road as offroad) then neither is the answer for a daily drive. The Mazda CX9, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe et al will all be better (and mostly cheaper options).
If you are going offroad then reliability becomes a key virtue to have. The new Defender simply has not improved Land Rover lack of assembly quality in this regard. Already some reviewers (Google the American ones) have had most unfortunate experiences.

For a vehicle to be a faithful family hauler, it must be reliable, that has never been a strong-point of Land Rover vehicles. The Toyota/Lexus will be on the road, when the Land Rover is in the dealership repair shop. I have owned Lexus Gx and LX trucks since 2001, and have not had any problems with them. My Land Rover Sport was in the shop seemingly as much as it was on the road. I put a lot of mileage on my vehicles, and for those who do so, the Toyota/Lexus are much more reliable vehicles, and have a better resale value as a result. If you drive the Land Rover only to church on Sundays, it may suffice. My neighbor has a 2020 Land Rover Sport that has left him stranded on the Highway 2ce, when sensors and a computer shut the vehicle down. He is trading his in for a Lexus
