It's the best car i have ever owned
I live in the UK but have spent a lot of time in Southern Africa where most people I know who go seriously off road choose a Toyota on the basis of reliability rather than absolute off-road performance.
I have owned three Land Rover Discoveries from new over the last thirty years. The first had a major engine problem after three years. The second ran virtually trouble free for almost twenty years and 200,000 miles, but had terrible paint quality/galvanic corrosion that Land Rover would not address under warranty. My current Discovery 4 has only done 16000 miles, but recently had a complete electronic black out. You would not want that to happen in the middle of the Kalahari. My son's 2018 Discovery Sport had a similar "control system fault" at the same time.
Despite these issues, the Discovery is great to drive on and off road in the UK and meets my needs for seating capacity, load carrying, towing and comfort better than the Toyota. It will never be too far from support if/when it breaks down. If I was in Southern Africa or other remote areas I would choose a Toyota every time.
I'd take the Toyota any day of the week. Can't beat that reliability.
I use my Land Cruiser HJ45 1980 and still drives where Jeeps got stuck..jjajaja.

I've had 3 Toyota Prados (never owned a Land Cruiser) and 3 Landrover Discoverys (3, 4, 5). Discovery kills the Prado off road. Terrain Response is almost cheating! Never had a breakdown in the Landrovers as everyone worries about. My Discovery 4 has 250 000 Km on the clock and has been worked in the Australian outback. Still going strong. Think their reliability issues disappeared with the release of the Discovery 3. Big negative with the 5 is that there is no room under the bonnet for a second battery.
How much Land Rover pay you to say that
Went and looked at both of these cars. Land Rover wanted $115,000AUD for the standard car, Land Cruiser GXL was $100,000. Would go the Toyota without a doubt.
Until you mentioned it I hadn’t thought about the value difference between these two vehicles, The 200 series land cruiser is 14 years old now, with that engine dating back to 1999. It’s kind of amazing they sell for the price they do considering the technology is well known. It’s nice to see the comparison between these but I don’t think the demographics of the two owners overlap anymore, the defender is more aspirational and will sell well in cities.

Have to say, I'm a little tired of hearing that the TFL Defender broke down, no it kept on going, it had a check engine light that know one new what the problem was, so the engineers said it needs a new engine. Granted a check engine light on a new car is not good, but I suspect it was blown out of all proportion. Also the second one they said was also broke, was broken by a mechanic at the dealership who severed a wiring harness!
They threw mud on the Defender because they lost money on having to cancel the 'To hell and back' series with the Defender. 1st one had a fault ( lots of new cars can have faults in any brand, not just JLR ), 2nd was damaged by a mechanic ( the lad didn't get the proper training because of the Covid outbreak, so all the training they received was trough Zoom or PDFs ). And all that took a long time overall ( again, COVID made it that way ). The only thing I regret about the TFL Defender that they didn't wait a bit longer to get the same spec they had on the 1st one.

Coming from someone who has owned:
- 2008 Range Rover sport supercharged
-2005 4runner
-and now a 2007 lexus gx4700:
Its Definitely an over-pushed and an over-hyped position to have to think that toyota reliability is so much superior, or so much more important. I had numerous problems with my 4 runner that never existed in my range rover. Except for the frame rot. The metal they use in toyota and lexus really sucks.
The reason why toyota has a reputation for being more reliable is partially because its under-powered.
Its built to handle more power than it comes with. Parts for them are also much cheaper, but you can feel the cheapness when you drive it.
I had a 2008 range rover sport supercharged, and I just switched to a 2007 lexus gx470. Overall, the driving experience is much less fun with the GX470. It almost feels like someone pissed in my cheerios. But then again, the msrp is much less for the lexus gx470.
In either case, if you can afford an 80-100k vehicle, you can probably afford to fix it every so often. And additionally, you're not going to keep the car for 20 years...... You're more likely to drive it 100k-150k miles and then want a newer better vehicle anyway.

It’s a fault. But not a big one.....it’s still a jolly good off roader. Built Brit tough....
@@jdean2131 it's not a fault... It basically acts as an infinity hinge. Here you go... ruclips.net/video/U65ytPTi0r0/видео.html
If people read the manual they would know about this stuff. If you notice after he was finished in the rear of the Defender, the door was actually staying where he left it - not fully open - it wasn’t closing and hitting him.
If it requires people to read the manual to be able to open the door, then it's a design fault.
@@eugene9852 they can open the door without the manual - but utilising the feature to lock it anywhere in place requires instructions. Some things you should just know yes, but features need to be explained.
The Landy I think goes into super extended mode for more hight over those rocks.
Exactly
i wouldn't drove off too far from autoservice on land rover
Highly doubt you know much you can't even spell lol!
@@jeff1595 you right, cuz english isn't my native language, but every year statistic of reliability tell us that i'm right, top of lemon cars landrover/jaguar
@@jeff1595 i suggest you to watch from TFL channel review about this car, they are own it, cuz own it and just test it it's two different thing
@@vzheka1981 you should watched other channel too. Or maybe their video didn't interest you because their land rover doesn't break down?
@@babyphat8965 I believe that some land rover/range rover doesn't break down, but in general 99% it's lemon
Nice, very well demonstrated! And some laughter along with the review!
Land cruiser is simply the best suv. Here in my country if you own one everybody gets out of your way especially if it’s a black tinted!
this toyota is the king of offroad,no others can compare as i known.
@22:42 all that wheel articulation from that land cruiser is like hardcore porn lol 😂 awesome sight
And the defender looks like a shopping cart going offroad because it has no suspension travel at all when its at offroad height.
I have to say I'm not a fan of the Defender tailgate. It looks nice and retro, but it's just not practical. I'd much prefer the LC split tailgate, even if it's slow to open and close.
I agree. I own a split tailgate Land Rover (Discovery 3) and the only reason the Defender tailgate is swing out is because of the full size spare wheel
Actually that split tailgate was copied from range rover
The new Defender is a nice capable off road vehicle with lots of modern technology, power, and materials, and so on, BUT... in reality, you just SIMPLY can't beat the Land Cruiser!!
In 2030 can you guys take them again and then you will have a winner, wait I know the Land Cruiser
So, the guy in the LR just does the parts my mom could do in her MDX, got it…
Land cruiser always!!! That air suspension will be a real problem in months.
At 13:54, I believe there are 2 extra high modes for the suspension above the highest off road mode. I believe engaging them will help you clear that obstacle.
Yes, would be nice if reviewers actually read the manual before reviewing a car.
Exactly the defender can go upto 334 mm which is much more than the competition
$91,000?!!! We can’t get the 200 series land cruiser in the UK anymore but at least when it was last sold we got adjustable height suspension, locking diffs, etc etc as standard! I thought it would be cheaper than the defender, especially when you compare the rather tacky interior and how many buttons that model was missing inside! Big respect for it though, just not sure Toyota are really getting it right with pricing and spec...
If you think either cars are perfect for overlanding, then go out overlanding!
I’d pray over for the owner of the Defender.
The defender looks like it was designed by a baby...landcruiser (all) designs are classic!
You guys talk too much... We really want to see the performance!!!
LR reliability infamy precedes them :D
If the Defender ever becomes as reliable I WILL BUY ONE. until then I’ll make do with my LC 200
At the end of the day the Defender will be used by the housewives from the suburbs for shopping and driving the children to school.
Sold 18 in the past 3 weeks, no soccer moms yet, but i live in hope!
LAND CRUISER VS land rover 🤣🤣🤣🤣incomparable
I can never understand why all these reviewers never put decent tires on the vehicles or at least the same tires. Tread and tire P.S.I. matter a lot off road, especially if you're running road tires on rock in the cold. If either of those vehicles had good all weather AT tires they would have destroyed that trail.
Land Cruiser is more powerful and already carries the pride of the land, money competing
Awesome video. Fan of both SUVs
if I win a Land Rover, I sell it and buy a Land Cruiser. Australians say: if you want to go to the desert, take a Land Rover, if you want to come back, take a Land Cruiser.
Land cruiser for me :)
I never trust a land Rover, it may get stuck/breakdown in the jungle...
My confident is with my Landcruiser.
I have 1 LC Prado series 90 aged 25 years. Still running good & never have any single breakdowns...salute to Toyota...👍
