There is no competition, in my opinion. I am a fan of both singers, and have seen them both perform, live, on multiple occasions. I don't mean to knock Layne Staley unfairly. He certainly had loads of talent. I thought that the AIC albums that he sang on were great. BUT, Mike Patton beats him on every meaningful measure, as far as I am concerned. I don't think that there is ANYTHING that Layne Staley was capable of doing, vocally, that Mike Patton couldn't do just as well, if not better. Plus, from seeing multiple live performances of both singers, Mike Patton was/is the superior performer. Heck... I know that Layne Staley obviously was struggling with drug addiction, but he was, quite frankly, TERRIBLE at EVERY live performance I saw of his. I NEVER saw him perform well in person. During the rare occasions where he was actually CAPABLE of standing in front of a mic and singing, his pitch was HORRIBLE. He couldn't sing in tune. He didn't seem like he gave a shit about it, either. At another show, he came out, "sang" (if you can call it that) about a song and a half, walked back to the drum riser, laid down and apparently napped through the rest of the set, while Jerry Cantrell took over on lead vocals for the rest of the night (very well, I might add). As for Mike Patton, EVERY performance that I have seen has been SPOT ON. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now, I know that folks have TOLD me that Layne Staley, at his best, was much better than what I witnessed. But the fact remains... aside from studio recordings, EVERY vocal performance that I witnessed, live, was poor. By contrast, EVERY vocal performance that I witnessed, live, was amazing. I know... it was probably the drugs. But that's part of who Layne Staley WAS. Mike Patton didn't let drugs affect his ability to sing and perform. And Mike Patton went on to a MUCH more innovative and prolific musical career, which still continues to this day. Layne Staley? Not so much. Might he have gone on to become much better had he not OD'd and died? Maybe. But he didn't. Might he have been better than Mike Patton, had it not been for his addiction? I doubt it, but I suppose it's possible. But the fact remains... he was addicted to drugs, it did adversely affect his performances, and he died from his addiction before he could overcome it.

I’m so glad you guys are starting to get Mike, this song in particular starts out with classical Chinese music on the keyboards, Mike just always no matter what they throw at him has an answer, and then it turns into full-blown gospel, it not only underlines Mike’s greatness but also the bands creativity, they are simply the best, and often why you here the word genius in association with the band or Mike🍻
Hands down mike Patton for his range so much more to him plus he has had many different bands so all definitely different styles voice wise too! He is versatile as fuck!!
I'm a vocalist and have followed both of these vocalist closely at one time or another and I love them both. However, on a selected popularity vote Layne might win. I don't know your listening audience. However, in a who is a better singer, who has influenced more, who's a better educated vocalist, and who is more famous world wide. Patton easily wins this and likely will win against anyone you out him against. Patton can cover almost 7 octaves with his range while Staley can proudly do 4. Patton can cover any style, while Staley really kinda sticks with one style. Patton speaks a number of languages and will go to other countries and sing his songs in their language. Plus his influence on bands is incredible. Along with crooning, screaming, etc.. I believe his album with Peeping Tom was ranked number 6 on Hip Hop charts due to how many Rap Artists he collaborated with on it. I love both, but All in all Mike Patton is a much better singer, it has nothing to do with who someone likes better. It's not even a competition. Go check out Mr. Bungles "retrovertigo" it's a beautiful song. While indeed you did thing with AIC's Love/ Hate/ Love, that's definitley mybfav by them.
I love when a song builds and then just has an absolutely massive repeating chorus in the end... very different song, but I feel the same with the song Daylight by Failure... it just builds, and then the final chorus is just MASSIVE
What a goddamn chorus! Mike is the best. I recommended some songs of his to you guys a while ago and now you have introduced me to one! And it was incredible! Here's another two recommendations for Mike: Peeping Tom- Neighborhood Spaceman. Mr Bungle - Air Conditioned Nightmare
Patton takes it. I grew came up with both AiC and FNM in my ears. I saw them both live in 1990s, as well as seeing FNM on their 2015 reunion tour (on my birthday, no less). The big difference between Staley and Patton is that Staley couldn't do it live. Patton not only could, but even as his voice has aged, he still can. As someone who has loved FNM for 33 years, I'd love to see you tackle some material off of their 2015 album, Sol Invictus. A lot of fans sleep on it, but I see it as their best work. "Matador" might be Patton's boldest vocal performance on the record, but they're all bangers. Also, the BBC session video from the time will stun you.
I’ve never heard anyone say Layne couldn’t sing live, it’s actually the opposite everywhere you look. Not sure what you heard but everything I’ve heard from Layne live is top notch aside from a few shows here and there. I never could stand Patton’s voice but I gotta give him credit for range but to me that doesn’t mean much
For Faith No More, you MUST check "Matador" off "Sol Invictus", it is from the Reunion album, so the band have more experience behind them, and this song shows it.
Mike has one of biggest vocal ranges of anyone. I think it's seven octaves which is pretty mind-blowing. I love that he uses all his talent in his vocals and doesn't hold back. Layne was great but Mike wins by miles.
I'm coming to this a year after the fact, but I LOVE y'all's FNM reaction videos. Apropos one of Mike Patton's bandmates, FNM's bassist, Billy Gould, is the band's secret weapon. Seriously, he's got so many god-level bass lines. For a good case in point, check out the FNM song "King for a Day."
This song is so 1995! I don't care if it sounds snobbidh or hipstery, it's a fact. Some songs just can, in retrospective, to etch in your consciousness, and to mask over everything else in this time period, completely.
Y'all are only at the Tip of the Iceberg with Patton's vocal range! Check out his work with Peeping Tom, the X-cutioners or Mondo Cane With the Italian Metropole Orchestra!.
I know this is an old vid, but ima comment anyway. Forgive me. I know it will inevitably become a novel. For those who can’t read or can’t be bothered to read then just scroll past me. idgaf. I’m Gen X. Graduated in 92” when FNM came out w Angel Dust. I already had Real Thing w Epic on It which came out in 90, I believe. Epic was the 1st time I remember seeing baby Mike P on MTV. He was adorable in his lil fluorescent baggy clothes w punching gloves making his goofy pout faces. He sounded like Sponge Bob & 2 other people singing Epic. I also listened to Mr Bungle, so I knew a little about Mike. However, I didn’t understand wtf was going on w EPIC only that I loved it. Angel dust was a freaken masterpiece. Mike sounded like a man. He also cleaned up deliciously. He can pull off styles just like he can music genres. FNM was my new favorite thing. Around that time the RHCP vs FNM fight started to get ugly. Kiedes insisting he held the patent on jumping up & down & saying FNM stole his moves & sound. (Pfft srsly? He not only thought it, but publicly said Mike was copying his sound? The man of a million voices doesn’t need to steal your dollar store voice. He can do Anthony Kiedes better than Anthony Kiedes if he wanted to. Then he said someone needed to kidnap Mike, shave his head and chop off his leg so he could find his own identity. DF u talking bout Kiedes? Aren’t u 7 or 8 yrs Mikes senior? Grow the eff up. I was team FNM. Said 🖕 to dumb ass Kiedes. Launched all my RHCP CDs and cassettes in the garbage. The entire time FNM was fire 🔥we finally started getting a taste of Alice In Chains. They came out w Man in a Box circaaa 🤔 90”, Right before Angel Dust. Still it took longer for AIC to get noticed in my neck of the woods. Of freaken course we loved them! How can one NOT love Man in a Box? It wasn’t played as much on the radio…yes fuggen radio, as Epic did because I live in a super conservative town smack in the middle of Kansas. It’s the Bible Belt. I guess FNM wasn’t as demonic as AIC. (This was also the time period people blamed music for Scholl shootings, devil worship, $ui€ide, everything bad) Still eventually we got wind of AIC. It blasted at bars, on the radio at weddings, funerals etc. We were finally able to steal the cassettes from Walmart & Musicland. (Gen X was weird…lil thieves. We worked f/t but still refused to pay for most anything. I guess my point is , one can’t compare the two bands. It’s beyond apples to oranges. It’s apples to Rib Eye steak. Layne Staley has a fantastic voice and AIC is an amazing band. I like AIC. HOWEVER, Mike Patton has Idk, 57 amazing voices and FNM is an amazing work of art. I was, still am , and forever will be obsessed w FNM. Mike is why I’m obsessed. Not cuz I’m a creepy fan, because he is “affectionately” musically schizophrenic. I recognize that right away. I’m a writer. I am lyrically schizophrenic. I completely understand why he jumps from band to band to orchestra, to tribal, to a rain forest sounds, to robot sounds, to air conditioner sounds, to making vocals on a video game, vocals on a movie, back to Mr. bungle, back to Faith No More, and then creates 10 other projects at the same time and starts all over again. I get it. He’s not crazy. He literally has more octaves than any other performer in the world. If I had a gift so rare like that, I would be summoning wildlife and angels or trying my voice at every single thing I could think of. It’s probably maddening for him sometimes. He absolutely could’ve stuck with just faith no more and been a master of a few voices, and became a famous for that. He chose to go creative and do his own thing and I’m here for it. Mike is less than a once in a lifetime talent. In many lifetimes there has been no Mike. Actually, there is no record that I’m aware of or a performer had as many octaves as Mike. Imagine being the only one ever ever to be known for that ability.? How frighteningly wonderful. I will forever listen to his projects with the look of anticipation, and initial confusion, perhaps a little concern and maybe even a little bit of fear. Even his greatest fans never know what to expect.. 😂 But there will always be an ear to ear smile on my face. In the end I will either love his latest form of organized chaos or be left speechless and confused. However I’ll always appreciate it. Not all that he does is meant to be happy or be sang along with. It’s just created to see if he can achieve it. Mike is more than just one in 1 million… He’s the only one. I think he gets a wild idea, says I know this might sound crazy, but idgaf. I’m going to do it anyway and it’s going to be amazing! I love that about him. And all of his faithful followers do as well.

ya know its funny you mention he can just nail a vocal part without any real warmup. He is legendary in live shows to be the only frontman/singer at the start of a show walking up to the mic and still be chowing down on a sandwich or some other food until his first notes come in. He's brushed off criticism about that, saying something like "Hey I need to get what I need before I deliver to you what you want" one of a kind
If you haven't yet heard Evidence, I think you're gonna love it. Also give Tomahawk a shot, the song Captain Midnight is great. Peeping Tom is another Mike Patton project that deserves a listen as well. Mike Patton's discography is MASSIVE. Being a fan of his since the beginning, I still can't name all of his different groups and collaborations.
Not to detract at all from Mike's skill but one way that he is so good at getting so many different tones is that he really knows how to use a mic. He will often have at least two set up, one for a cleaner sound and one more distorted, and will go from singing a few inches away to literally sucking on the mic as he sings. Combined with using megaphones, gas masks, and PA radios to effect his voice even before he starts growling or using falsetto.
Mike patton makes a character out of each song. He is the closest one to Maynard that you have on this brackets. Maynard makes every character conform to him. Mike patton conforms to his characters.
@@inkubuzz hmm maybe. If you're really wanting a song off TRT Zombie Eaters is a decent vocal display. The problem with TRT is, that he had no time to prepare. He was brought in to perform Chuck's part and he didn't have much input into anything

The album is a rollercoaster...an album of highlights...it goes all over...great music and great vocals...🤘
Hands down mike Patton for his range so much more to him plus he has had many different bands so all definitely different styles voice wise too! He is versatile as fuck!!
Never heard a reaction to this song and it does show his range so well. There is not much Mike can’t do! He’s a God!
R.I.P. DMX....Flesh Of My Flesh will remain a classic. DMX will always be a legend.
Oh man first I’m hearing of his actual passing.. Rest In Peace Legend. damn
Capt Midnight by Tomahawk. That's a good one to check out for Patton
Thats a good pick dude
"EPIC" and "FALLING TO PIECES" are still my favorites! That whole album rocks! Mike Patton is my vote!!!!! 👍
During this song live Mike stage dived off the speaker at that last drop. This band live is so tight it’s unbelievable.
Yall should listen to "Mayday" by tomahawk. Some crazy vocals on that one!
Small Victory is one if my faves ..
I think Mike is unafraid and that coupled with this raw talent makes him unstoppable.
That bass line
This is one of the best albums ever made imo! This was such a big part of my childhood and even more so in my adult life! Love FNM!
Mike has one of biggest vocal ranges of anyone. I think it's seven octaves which is pretty mind-blowing. I love that he uses all his talent in his vocals and doesn't hold back. Layne was great but Mike wins by miles.
I read 8
Man I love this album. Brings me back to high school
Check out This Guy’s in Love With You by Faith No More. If you really want to hear him belt it out. I Started a Joke is another.
Came here to say the same thing.
The BBC Live of the former is lovely.
I’d love to hear your take on Star A.D. another off the reservation track from FNM!
King For a Day is the most diverse and catchy album ever release! 100/100
Best reaction ever to this song. Thanks guys!!
Never thought you guys would do this song. Never thought when I saw FNM live they would close with my favorite song... Both happened, thank you
Y'all are only at the Tip of the Iceberg with Patton's vocal range! Check out his work with Peeping Tom, the X-cutioners or Mondo Cane With the Italian Metropole Orchestra!.
They did a video for Deep Down from the Mondo Cane album, which I suggested 😊👍🏽
Dont sleep on his stuff with Lovage even if it isnt solely his project
Mike Patton is more than a legend! :)
You should watch the live version of this when he has a choir with him it's great! He pushes his voice even more live on this
Badass song! Love the beat and harmony!!💜
one of the most underrated FNM-songs
Mike Patton is cool and so are you guys!
Guys, It made me so happy watching you enjoy this incredible song. I had a smile on my face the whole video. One of my favorites songs, such uplifting music
now Cuckoo for Caca, from the same album. Talk about contrast...
See them live, absolutely incredible. Saw him with one of his other bands peeping tom, incredible
I'm going to have to check out way more of your channel... I've watched all the Mike Patton ones.... ya'll 2 rappers have great style! In whole, but more-so on the little things you pick up on! Great work boys!
My favorite FNM song. This channel dope.
Love this tune. Good choice.
Have you guys listened to Squeeze me Macaroni, by Mr. Bungle, yet? Cuz if you haven't it's about damn time.
Mike Patton has no peer.
Hippie Jam song is a great very underrated FNM song.
That whole album is full of great songs.
For next Patton's Friday, I recommend Capt Midnight by Tomahawk, like for real
That song still gives me goosebumps. Cheers fellas!
Nobody is like Mike Patton l. He’s a one-off. King For A Day is a brilliant album.
Mike is amazing!
Never thought I’d hear the Dunning-Krueger effect referenced in a reaction video. 😂
Fun fact boys. The new teenage mutant ninja turtles theme song is sung by patton.
Based on their entire bodies of work (as Hollywood and Smokey have been saying throughout), I have to give this round to my boy Mike over Layne. Even just one song like "The Real Thing" shows how much of a vocal diversity Mike has. Still, I like both Mike and Layne.
🦋 "Ashes to Ashes" Guys I'm serious!!! If you do more Mike Patton. All his songs are great! As well as Layne's. I love them Both! This tournament is so Awesome!!!
💓🎶🙌🎶💓
Patton's & Layne's lyrics are both Epic Written Masterpieces of Art!
Hey White Butterfly_46n2 . Hope everything is good with you. 😁
@@Godspeed1756 🦋As long as I have my music everyday 😊 is a good day! Hope all is good with you as well. 🦋
@@mendyrckz76 I am great, thank you. Can't wait to see what the next Patton song is. If it's not Ashes To Ashes I hope it's Retrovertigo. 😁
@@Godspeed1756 🦋I'm just happy to be here. No matter who moves forward. 😊 But Yes that's a good Patton song As Well. 🙌 I'm sure they will revisit all these artist's regardless who wins this entire Tournament! 😉
"That bass"..... yes sir, that be Billy Gould.
ya know its funny you mention he can just nail a vocal part without any real warmup. He is legendary in live shows to be the only frontman/singer at the start of a show walking up to the mic and still be chowing down on a sandwich or some other food until his first notes come in.
He's brushed off criticism about that, saying something like "Hey I need to get what I need before I deliver to you what you want"
one of a kind
If you haven't yet heard Evidence, I think you're gonna love it. Also give Tomahawk a shot, the song Captain Midnight is great. Peeping Tom is another Mike Patton project that deserves a listen as well. Mike Patton's discography is MASSIVE. Being a fan of his since the beginning, I still can't name all of his different groups and collaborations.
Now you have to do Take This Bottle from Faith No More
Layne and Mike...my favorites of all time. Mike Patton is God. Layne is the Holy Spirit.
Pretty sure Mike Patton does all the vocals on this including the choir. He's a legend for sure
"Last to know" sums up my every day at work. The guitar at the end gets me through.
The whole album is just that good.
hahahahaaha! smokey looks so sto**** here bahahaha!
Patton for the win......🏆🤴
Patton is far superior. None better.
You should watdh the live version of "just a man". :)
Patton, not even close, Layne was phenomenal, but Mike is the greatest
Subbed. The opening bars are sweet, btw. Cheers boys.
Mike patton makes a character out of each song. He is the closest one to Maynard that you have on this brackets. Maynard makes every character conform to him. Mike patton conforms to his characters.
Guys, check out Zombie Eaters … it’s a longer track but the switch ups are frequent and jaw-droppingly good 🔥🔥🔥
FNM Fridays?! Is this happening?!
Whether or not that does actually come to be, how about "We Care A Lot" for the next one?
Can't do that one, until they're ready to learn Patton wasn't the first singer in FNM
yes please!
@@Kevin_Fiol Maybe "Falling to Pieces", then?
@@inkubuzz hmm maybe. If you're really wanting a song off TRT Zombie Eaters is a decent vocal display. The problem with TRT is, that he had no time to prepare. He was brought in to perform Chuck's part and he didn't have much input into anything
@@Kevin_Fiol part of why Angel Dust is my favorite album they ever did
