When Margaret walks in Edies says, "A dump?" This has to be a reference to Bette Davis's earlier film "Beyond the Forest" in which she says, "This place is a dump".

"Now sit down!". For some reason I believe I have seen this Bette Davis movie more than any other. I really like "The Star" as well. "The Anniversary" is a fun twisted icky move and the heart moving" The Nanny" makes four that kept Bette relevant.

Bette Davis was absolutely beside herself in this movie 😀
they must have used the corner of the room as the demarcation line,
in order to line up the separate footage in editing.
Amazing, some of the tricks they used back then

The opening of this scene is often misrepresented. Edie says, "A dump?" wanting to goad her sister into reacting to the shabby living quarters. The misrepresentation is that, when Margaret walks in, she assesses the shabby room and says, "What a dump!" But that's NOT how Margaret rolls. ;o)

I kinda love this movie; it's my favorite of Bette Davis' late career (I'm not a big fan of "Baby Jane", it's just TOO campy). Dead Ringers has a great plot, and it's camp, but well-done, restrained camp. Plus the bonus that it was directed by the great Paul Henreid, who co-starred with Davis in "Now, Voyager" and "Deception".

Let me preface by writing that I do love Miss Davis and have always been an avid fan of her's in many films she's played in. 'The Little Foxes, The Old Maid, Now Voyager" and the list can go on. However, "Dead Ringer" was probably one of my least favorite. Somehow I felt her performance in this film was extremely caricatured.

As she got older she acted like a parody of herself. It’s a shame since she is a very good actress
