bent valves only occur on those if timing belts break and pistons hit the valves. Commonly on those, blowing head gaskets or bad fuel injectors. try swapping those two cylinder injectors with other and PRAY the miss moves, showing bad injectors.

generally the only things that come and go for misfires are electronic problems. Mechanical ones are broken and don't come and go. I would change the spark plug wires if they are old, they often will do that.
With out a doubt #1 of the BEST trouble shooting presenters on the internet. No mindless b.s., needless chatter. Gets right to the point and stays on topic. Also funny and entertaining, who says learning can 't be FUN.
the worst parts is having bad valve or your pistons are the problem, or your chain might slip or your cam position sensor so on and on, alot of things causes missfireing these are the simple ones you check to begin with
One thing that was left out is that a random misfire caused by an electrical or computer monitored component will pop a P0300 on you. You will not get that with carbon build up, sludge, worn rings, bad valves or a hole in your piston. The computer "assumes" those variables are in tolerances. Every car inspection should start with the battery then go from there.
Exactly! I always say test, test, test! Being a mechanic goes way beyond pulling codes and throwing parts at a problem! Most so called mechanics will pull a p0420 code and immediately go to replace the cat, when it could be a number of things other than the cat, like an o2 sensor. I've seen it so many times I lost count. A shop replace thousand dollar catalytic converter and reset the codes only to have it come back on due to a 60 dollar o2 sensor being the actual problem.
@@justinl9677 mine is the actual cat & other codes come up too… now my car sounds like a freaking v8 when I’m driving or idling my car shakes.. p0300 code has come up and idk if I can even drive it back home like this 😭

I own a 05 Ford Taurus SE with a little over 96,000 miles and I've been trying to find out what's been causing the p0300 and nothing has helped. Did a tune up, changed the fuel filter, both cabin and air filters, cleaned the MAF sensor, checked my plugs that are good, changed the gasket on the intake running valve. * Thank you for showing me how to smoke test a vacuum leak with a cigar, it cleared up the too lean codes I were getting. I still have a slight rough idle. I'm totally lost and can't afford to throw new parts in that aren't the problem. I've got two more weeks to pass smog in California.
Great video. Always very informative. I have a Chevy Lumina, and was getting the P0300, sometimes P0301 and found I had a blown head gasket at the #1-#3 cylinders. so the heads and gaskets and all intake gaskets, as well as plugs and wires, were replaced. It ran fine all summer. as the weather started to cool, when starting the engine, it starts and runs smoothly, then after a few minutes will start running very rough, even smelling very badly and turning on the check engine light with a P0300. after about ten minutes of driving, it runs great again, nice and smooth, no hesitation and no odor. I am using your techniques today to looks for vacuum leaks. any thoughts?
A couple months ago I had transmission lurching, engine overheating, and CEL on load only. Called radiator guy. He said I needed a new radiator. Called trans shop, he said it was the torque convertor. Then I saw your vid on misfires. Stayed away from those shops & followed your advice; checked coil packs, plugs & wires. It was # 2 ignition wire. Got a new set of Delphi wires for $29 and all three problems ceased. Thanks, Scotty, for saving me tons of money & aggravation again.
You wanna laugh? You wrote about the plumber a couple days ago and today my daughter called the plumber because she thought the sump pump was going dead. I told her to order one from Amazon for less than $80 and told her I'd tell her how to install it - very simple procedure - 5 minutes start to finish. I live 2000 miles away or I would have done it myself. She instead called the plumber rather than do the job herself and paid him $325. So, if you have any more insights, please make them about me hitting the LOTTO. I'll give you a good cut when it comes in.
2000 4.3L Silverado 245k miles on it with P0300 errors that had terrible idle, poor acceleration, and several cranks to start. It drove terrible in the city, okay on the highway. Ran vacuum test on the fuel line and it failed (thanks Scotty). Replaced the (newly redesigned) spider-injector, fuel regulator, and all upper intake gaskets. Runs like new. For the mechanically inclined it's about a 3 hour replacement.
1996 Chevy Silverado w/ a 5.0. Just replaced intake gaskets due to LOTS of coolant in oil and got this code after driving it for 2 days. Battery is a month old, cap and rotor button are 3 months old, plugs and wires are about a year old, and fuel filter is maybe 2 years old. Probably fowled plugs due to moisture, correct?
Not necessarily. Brake/carb cleaner comes in two different formulations. The original was made from chlorofluorocarbons and was not flammable at all. (That was one of the reasons it was so widely used commercially. No chance of fire.) The new formulation is non-chlorinated" and highly flammable.
Thanks, Scotty! I have a 2002 YukonXL 6.0L V8 that started misfiring a few days ago. I went out and started checking the spark plugs this morning, and then I noticed that one of the coils had somehow come loose from the spark plug. I plugged it back in and started the engine, and it runs fine. That's what I'd call a "stupid" problem, but at the same time, I'm glad it wasn't something really complicated.
@@babbygee6851 Bad fuel from a gas station I never visited before. When I started refueling from my usual place again the code went away, I didn't have to do any repairs.
one broken valve spring can cause this p0300, worn ignition coils(s) can cause p0300, also a low idle and lean missfire can cause that, also for that matter excessive carbon build up.
the coil pack should be secured by a fastener. there should be resistance rotating a new coil pack, the old coil pack, might be able to turn. however the coil pack delivers electrical voltage to the spark plug which lights the fire in the engine. the old one might be able to also... ability to rotate isn't really relative to the ability to deliver electrical voltage. i hope that helps
ok so i fixed two of my issues , oxygen sensors and speed wheel sensors and now the only thing i have left is this multiple misfires so i ll go check battery first and move on the list. THANK YOU SCOTTY AND HAPPY 4TH! GOD BLESS AMERICA

The battery comment was right on! My car had a random rich start (flooding) condition that was severe and mysterious. It disabled the car. Clue was the that stability control light stayed on a 2 sec. longer than it should on those occasions when it did start. Tech was very smart and went to the battery first. Sure enough, that was it!!! Now I watch the batteries very carefully and plan replacement at 3 years unless it's still perfect.
Thanks Scotty, I also had the dreaded PO300 code,I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy 4X4 with 4.3 , I've had this truck for 5 years now and it has almost put me in the poor house, I've owned 20 different vehicles in my 58 years and have never put so many parts on a truck or car like this, I can't scrap it now I have to much $$$ invested in it. I replaced the spark plugs and wires, that didn't do the trick so I replaced the distributor and rotor with AC Delco parts and that did the trick, she runs like new, thanks for the help.
do my video "what it means when your check engine light is on". There are over 2 thousand different reasons, get it scanned, e mail me the codes for analysis
The battery only has one function, to jolt the starter and start the car. The alternator then takes over and generates power to the rest of the car and recharges the battery small voltage usage. The only time the car runs on the battery is when the alternator is bad and then drains the battery and the car dies on the side of the road. Never heard of a battery causing trouble codes Scotty
Scotty u are awesome as hell bro, my 98 Park Avenue was already giving me the P0306 code so I knew it was a misfire from my 6th cylinder, then it cut off last night, got it towed and the P0300 code is now showing, I'll work on it tomorrow, thank you bro.

Thats something older people disagree with me on. I have tried over and over to explain to them just cause a battery starts your car does not mean you have a good battery. You battery can start your car okay but, say for example one battery is rated at 650 cold cranking amps and you have a test run on it and the rating comes in probably at 490 or 500 cold cranking amps most likely a tester would deem that as a bad battery or one that is probably getting weak. Glad to see a mechanic who also confirms what I know. Especailly one who has been a mechanic practically his whole life such as Scotty

Dear Sir, Thank you so much for your response, I forgot to Write this step... First of all i inspect MAF sensor and cleand it with its cleaner and replaced the Air filter also... (Fuel adjustment, PCV and throttle positioning sensor i didnot touch,, Are they related with this problem???) Can you reffer a Workshop manual or Ebook etc..? Regards Dildar Hussain.
Dildar Hussain I have the same issue, exactly the same, with my 97 Honda CR-V. I did all you have listed and perhaps some other things got anlittle better but then went back to the same or worse as you described and I don't know what else to check or do... Did you figure it out yet? If so, what did you doc any idea? thanks Hussain!
Could be fuel pressure regulator. It really just depends. Best way to nail it most accurately is to get a scanner that can read live data and look at at the fuel trims and all the sensors
+Karam Chato realize P0300 can be caused by over a dozen different things. Now it gets complex and often expensive. Best to have a mechanic at least analyze the other possibilities first
+Karam Chato Cleaning fuel injectors is a cheap step to take to see if the issue goes away, you can have it done professionally for about $100 and because of the system they use to hook directly into the rails you should notice an instant improvement if this was the issue, or you could try a tank additive for $5-$10, pretty much same effect but you will likely have to wait till you go through an entire tank of gas till you see a difference.
hey Scotty its Bobby again I took your advice and change. Those plugs and wires and that repaired the misfire thank you so much you got to be the closest thing to a saint thank you again bye bye
Scotty, I had one instance where I was coming up with a P0300 code, but it would happen in frequent spurts, usually in rain. I checked everything! Distributor caps, battery, alternator, and even my distributor cap. But when I pulled my distributor cap, there was moisture in it! So I replaced the gasket and the cap, threw in a little dialectric grease, and boom, good as new.
Thanks Scotty. I just changed out my battery on an 08 Hemi and it seems to have taken care of the engine light/ P0300 issue. The battery tests weak under load test but seemed to have no hesitation in starting the engine. Hopefully no more scares for me while driving in Mexico’s badlands. Thanks again.
start with these video tips. realize though that tahoes are notorious for fuel injection leaks causing it due to cheap plastic parts inside the engine cracking and leaking from age.
Hey Scotty!! Great videos man... I'm a DIY guy all the way and I always check your stuff first. Got an 03 Taurus reading codes P0316, P1131, P1151, and OF COURSE P0300. Seems to be misfiring at idle and at low rpm's when I hit a hill or whatever. Other than that, no apparent problems such as fuel injectors or vacuum lines. All seems solid, but the check engine light is on and has been on for roughly two days since it started acting up four days ago. Gotta get my MawMaw's car back on the road asap. Many thanks for all your to-the-point tutorials and of course I could really use a heads up or two before I start chasing this dragon if there is one. Keep rockin' man!

You called it Scotty! I fought with my ‘07 4.7 Jeep Commander over that PO300 code replacing a bunch of parts with no success. That went on for months. Don’t trust the dealership and wanted to beat the problem myself. I didn’t think it could be the battery as it was a Duralast gold only 3 years old. Then we had a no start day on vacation. I got it going and got home but after 4hrs driving the battery was only at 11volts though the alternator was putting out 14.5v. Put in a new battery and guess what? The misfire issue went away ! Hasn’t thrown a code or had a problem since! How bout that !

of course, but that's much less frequently the problem of this code. Can't cover all bases, as there are actually over a hundred different things which can trip P0300 and I cover the most common here.
many things can cause that no start and misfire, BUT put a new crank sensor on first cause if it goes bad the ignition can be retarded too far to stay running. Pray it's that easy of a fix.

Changed my ignition coil since I was getting P0303 and done. No more car hesitation nor error found, thanks!
bent valves only occur on those if timing belts break and pistons hit the valves. Commonly on those, blowing head gaskets or bad fuel injectors. try swapping those two cylinder injectors with other and PRAY the miss moves, showing bad injectors.
Scotty you are beyond cooler than Charlie sheen and Hugh heffner combined.

It's called movie magic. Doesn't have to be accurate just has to get the message across
probably gets more pu$$y combined hahahahahahaha!!!
I like your upbeat personality scotty. Keep it up! I've never tried anything u suggest but I watch your videos when I'm curious what's wrong with my car before I take it to the mechanic. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to make/upload all these videos
I'd recommend adding a check on the distributor for terminal corrosion. Love the Scotty Kilmer Channel. Thanks for putting all these great and super-succinct videos together. They're terrific!
Hey Scotty this video was very helpful my 99 Pontiac GP started up but stalled immediately my scan tool showed code PO300. I tried to drive it but the brakes were rock hard and had no braking power, Turns out the big vacuum hose on the power brake unit got disconnected somehow. I reconnected it and its fine now
you're the man scotty....love the enthusiasm and how you get right to the point!
swap coil on plug assemblies to see if missmoves. If not, swap injectors to see if they are bad.
Thanks for all the great videos Scotty! For my 2005 Chevy Astro, the P0300 code ended up being a bad cap and rotor!
Man, thank you for getting right to the point!!! I'ver learned more watching your short video, than I have from the other 5 that were 10-15 mins long and talked a bunch of gibrish!!!! thank you!!!

Good call on the battery
Scotty, thanks for the work you put into helping people with their car problems!
generally the only things that come and go for misfires are electronic problems. Mechanical ones are broken and don't come and go. I would change the spark plug wires if they are old, they often will do that.
With out a doubt #1 of the BEST trouble shooting presenters on the internet. No mindless b.s., needless chatter. Gets right to the point and stays on topic. Also funny and entertaining, who says learning can 't be FUN.
the worst parts is having bad valve or your pistons are the problem, or your chain might slip or your cam position sensor so on and on, alot of things causes missfireing these are the simple ones you check to begin with
Hi veli korkmaz , my Audi A3 8l, 1.6 benzine 2001 misfire on sunny day. Other day , it won’t misfire. Any idea please??
@@elaavgroup2660 not sure why but check the coolant temp sensor
that's misfire on number 3 cylinder, change spark plug and wire and pray it's that. If not, replace number 3 injector
Thanks Scotty! - I tried your advice and now my 98 Honda Civic no longer misfires! Thanks again!
11 years later, and this video is still helping people New battery hopefully solved the problem, only 50% of useful battery, never thought of it.
Old Schol scotty kilmer!! Wow... 10 years ago, a lot has changed since then! You became quite famous since then , good for you!
try everything in this video, and realize if you have coil on plugs set up, you may have to change all 6 out, they are crap on that model
Yes, but generally it's not random then, it would be certain cylinders misfiring and not random ones.
How do you fix that?
@@justinl9677 mine is the actual cat & other codes come up too… now my car sounds like a freaking v8 when I’m driving or idling my car shakes.. p0300 code has come up and idk if I can even drive it back home like this 😭
scotty kilmore must be the king of shade tree mechanics! He is a perfect example of what you dont want to be if you are serious about identifying and fixing problems with cars!
+Michael Hart bud, I have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment in my garage, BUT I make these vids for DIY guys so I keep it simple in these vids. You don't like em, take a hike, stop whining.
I swear Scotty you saved my life thank you so much
This guys awesome
A couple months ago I had transmission lurching, engine overheating, and CEL on load only. Called radiator guy. He said I needed a new radiator. Called trans shop, he said it was the torque convertor. Then I saw your vid on misfires. Stayed away from those shops & followed your advice; checked coil packs, plugs & wires. It was # 2 ignition wire. Got a new set of Delphi wires for $29 and all three problems ceased. Thanks, Scotty, for saving me tons of money & aggravation again.
Thefirstgalaxybeing I believe it, if you would of called the plumber he would say you need a new sink etc.
You better know it.
Thefirstgalaxybeing if you play lottery you will win, don't forget my cut
2000 4.3L Silverado 245k miles on it with P0300 errors that had terrible idle, poor acceleration, and several cranks to start. It drove terrible in the city, okay on the highway. Ran vacuum test on the fuel line and it failed (thanks Scotty). Replaced the (newly redesigned) spider-injector, fuel regulator, and all upper intake gaskets. Runs like new. For the mechanically inclined it's about a 3 hour replacement.
wow tools are so sophisticated now they can remove spark plugs before you put socket in the spark plug mount 0:42
Scitimar 😂
Random misfire can be more involved but you nailed the most common, good video
1996 Chevy Silverado w/ a 5.0. Just replaced intake gaskets due to LOTS of coolant in oil and got this code after driving it for 2 days. Battery is a month old, cap and rotor button are 3 months old, plugs and wires are about a year old, and fuel filter is maybe 2 years old. Probably fowled plugs due to moisture, correct?
@@daddyosink4413 no incorrect
@@CharlesWilson-oz8ys thanks for the detailed analysis 🤣
When spraying brake cleaner, carb cleaner, etc around the intake manifold, BE CAREFUL to not do it on a hot engine! It's flammable! :)
Nathan Reeves Thanks Good to Know
Not necessarily. Brake/carb cleaner comes in two different formulations. The original was made from chlorofluorocarbons and was not flammable at all. (That was one of the reasons it was so widely used commercially. No chance of fire.) The new formulation is non-chlorinated" and highly flammable.
You should have a proper extinguisher handy just in case
Don’t kick the dog
You helped me fix my p0300 on my 99 Tahoe. It turned out to be a dirty fuel filter. Thank you!
What about injectors?
Possible but you would need multiple to fail at once to have multiple misfires
Thanks Scotty, I was worried when this showed up on my 2011 Mazdaspeed 3 today.
What did it turn out to be?
Thanks
ok so i fixed two of my issues , oxygen sensors and speed wheel sensors and now the only thing i have left is this multiple misfires so i ll go check battery first and move on the list. THANK YOU SCOTTY AND HAPPY 4TH! GOD BLESS AMERICA

U did lol
its a demo dude..but good catch.
Damn good catch!
Can someone help me? I had problems with one spark plug wire. I did everything to fix misfire but for now i have feeling that my computer need reset. I remove battery and connect it back after 20minutes. But i think i have the same fuel consumption...
He is just that good😎
I have an 08 impala ss losses power and rough idles in reverse any idea?
Don’t know if you still have the problem, but maybe a bad ignition coil or spark plug. Running rough is a sign of a misfire.
I have an 07 Impala ltz and has lose of power, stuttering and bad idle at red lights and stuff. Changed the spark plugs and wires but still doing it
Antwan Baldwin check your pcv valve and the boot going to it,also clean your throttle body and MAF sensor
my t bird did this and the throttle body was built up with carbon cleaned it and it ran like a champ

If a battery cell starts to go bad and bounces from less than 1 volt to higher than 2.3 volts it will trigger a P0300 code. Seen it many times.
I wasn't expecting the end lol 😂 🤣😂😂😂
It worked, check battery first showed ok. Check spark plugs and #2 was broken. Car runs great now!
Scotty u are awesome as hell bro, my 98 Park Avenue was already giving me the P0306 code so I knew it was a misfire from my 6th cylinder, then it cut off last night, got it towed and the P0300 code is now showing, I'll work on it tomorrow, thank you bro.

Damn, this guy saved me a lot of moo-laa!!!!!!!!
Scotty you gotta repair that house too let me know I have my own construction company and you repair my cars how about that
Thats something older people disagree with me on.
To bad theirs only one awesome dude like you and not clones that can at least receive messages from viewers who are going through these issues and u offer the verbal advice and image if they watch and or subscribe lol. 😂 anyways thanks for being around for us all these years. Hello,
I have Toyota Camry 2006 (2.4L)/4Cyl.... it misfires,/loosing power/jerk during running when I increase the Accelerator...... but it remains Lil bit smooth when I increase accelerator very slowly.... No check engine light no any code.
1)..I replaced Fuel filter
2)..Injector cleaned
3).. Air control valve Inspect and clean
4)... Ignition Coil Resistance Check and the resistance is between 349 to 350.7 Ohm for all 4 cylinders ( resistance measured between first 2 pins).
5)... All vacuum pipe also checked but did not found anything..
6).... All electrical fuses are ok
7).... At OBDII no no code display
what would be the cause of misfire or losing power or pick power or jerk....???? Please Rply.
Thanks and regards.
Dildar Hussain.
often a bad maf sensor, check that data first.
Dear Sir,
Thank you so much for your response,
I forgot to Write this step...
First of all i inspect MAF sensor and cleand it with its cleaner and replaced the Air filter also... (Fuel adjustment, PCV and throttle positioning sensor i didnot touch,, Are they related with this problem???)
Can you reffer a Workshop manual or Ebook etc..?
Regards
Dildar Hussain.

I have the same issue, exactly the same, with my 97 Honda CR-V.
Spark plugs. Replace them every 50,000 miles
hi scotty i have code p0300 i replace spark plug, and wire and coil i need your advice because I spend over 300 $
+Karam Chato realize P0300 can be caused by over a dozen different things.
What I did first was check for vacuum leaks, I always check the things that are easy and cheap to do
Crazy how every issue I got, u helped or got me to find the issue, and each video makes me look at when it was uploaded and I'm like "well god dayum"
hey Scotty its Bobby again I took your advice and change.
So I replaced the gasket and the cap, threw in a little dialectric grease, and boom, good as new.
can be bad wire or coil on number 2 cylinder, or a bad fuel injector there. Swap #2 with #4 and if miss moves there, replace the injectors.
Did it fix the issue?
start with these video tips. realize though that tahoes are notorious for fuel injection leaks causing it due to cheap plastic parts inside the engine cracking and leaking from age.
Keep rockin' man!
start with my other video "fixing a car with multiple trouble codes" and e mail me the first code that comes back
Scotty 99 Nissan maxima 3.0 v6 . Misfire on 3. Swapped 3 and 5 coils to see if it moved to number 5. Cleared the codes . Drove it , now it has the 300 code.
Scotty... I just watched your video on random misfires P0300 code... Great advice and I have to say... just one video and I'm addicted!! Funny and informative... Keep up the great work
You are a beautiful human being that provides people with basic knowledge (and courage) to work on their cars! Love your vids!
This guy is great! Doesn't beat around the bush...

of course, but that's much less frequently the problem of this code.
Thanks Scotty!!! my car had a bad spark plug plus a bad fuel filter now i spend 8 bucks and everything good,,, i avoided paying 300 dollars at the dealership!!!!!
I've been caught a few times by problems caused by a flaky battery, now I usually check it early to be sure. Good tip.
I really like the straightforwardness of the video
Thanks alot buddy. For the past 2 days I keep thinking my valve need adjustment, Pcv, my boot engine, got spark plug done twice, but to found out the ignition Coil I bought online 2 out of 6 was bad smh. I went to pepboy and replace the bad ones and bamnnnnnn my baby running like new again. People dont used after market parts unless you got money's to wasted down the drain.
yes, that does it all the time, especially if water is in the gas.
replace the pcv valve and pray that fixes it. Cause if not, often internal engine wear like worn piston rings does that
