P0301 Explained - Cylinder 1 Misfire (Simple Fix)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 июл 2024
- The FIXD wireless OBD2 scanner and free app for iPhone and Android translates your check engine light into plain English so you can rest easy. In this video, we explain what OBD2 code P0301 means and possible causes.
P0301 means cylinder number 1 is experiencing misfires.
A misfire occurs when an insufficient amount of fuel is burning in a cylinder. The efficient burning of fuel is essential to engine operation as the combustion of fuel is what provides the energy to power the engine. A misfire from one or more cylinders can be caused by many reasons from a faulty ignition system, fuel system, or internal engine failure.
When P0301 occurs, it should be fixed immediately as long term driving with engine misfires could cause consequential damage to your engine. Many times, P0301 occurs when there are worn-out spark plugs, spark plug wires, or a faulty ignition coil.

Thank you for making this channel. The more I 'relearn' what my dad taught me, the better.
Thanks. I was too concerned about what it could be.
Now that I have your info, I'm planning to investigate before allowing some mechanic to rip me off. ❤
Thank you so much. you just saved me a ton of money. I put new plugs in my car and started to get the misfire cyl 1 code. it never dawned on me that the new plug was bad. Changed it for another new one and the car was fine. thanks again.
That makes us so happy to hear, Gordon! Happy to help 😊 Happy and safe driving!
Greetings Fixd! Just wanted to thank you for 'keeping it simple' for me! I have cleaned my MAF, purchased and installed new plugs, and ignition coils, changed the head gasket, changed transmission fluid/filter, and installed a new PCV Value...Yet the P0301 persists! When the weather permits, I shall tackle the task of removing the ignition coil into the #2 position and see how it goes, ugh. Thank you again and I hope your days are well.
I had my car just stop running 3 days ago I noticed oil around my coil in number 1 and found it was burnt as well as the plugs. Thanks for these videos as a chick it's always a RIP off going to a mechanic RUclips has saved me thousands of dollars. Thank you again for the videos!
I am having a same problome . Code p0301 celender 1 missfire and oil around my plug 1 . survice center thold me to meke hole engine in 1000$ :( i am in big problome .
What was wrong my Toyota Yaris stop running change the fuel filter and still have the some problem don’t start
Lol dude!!! I subscribed halfway through the video. I knew u were a great presenter and a great teacher. U remind me of Peter McKinnon... he helped me a lot when I wanted to start my videography career. Such great teachers and simple instructions that gets STRAIGHT to the point and make it look like an easy task to do... thank you man 🙏 I'm really a fan now, u gonna see a lot of likes flying in randomly from old videos 👌🏾🙏
Thank you for explaining this, my engine threw this code after I left the air conditioner running for about 5 mins while idling💜and subbed
Thanks man. Yeah, if one it's gonna get their hands dirty and the car is kina old, replace all sparkplugs, coils and most paramount, the upper air intake house and if splurge, a brand new MAF. All of these parts are pretty easy to replace.
Another thing that can cause a misfire is loose camshaft bearing caps. I had a P0302 which every single garage failed to diagnose. I took the rocker cover off and every single bolt could be unscrewed by hand. Tightened up the bolts in sequence and the misfire went away, I spent money on a coil pack, spark plugs, fuel injectors, and compression tester for nothing. Compression was perfect so it's one to check people.
TY
What motor?
if it was a bad fuel filter, would that not effect the entire combustion process in all cylinders? How can it be isolated to #1?
I'm sure an air or fuel leak would effect all cylinders too. I geuss he is assuming you have a diagnostics kit which gives the code p301 which is misfire in cylinder 1. Hope that explains 👍
@Rhuari Macleod if multiple are failing what code would it give?
@Man p0300 I believe. Commonly caused by a blown head gasket!
Thank you so much for this video!

Thank you! Solved the issue on Nissan Rogue 2011, it was the inition coil. detected with an odb2 scanner, switched the ignition coil with the cylinder number 2 and it returned me the code p0302. Buy a new one for 25 box.... Priceless your suggestion!
So glad we were able to help you figure it out, Marco! Happy and safe driving 😊
@fixd Any thoughts on getting misfire codes, yet the car doesn't misfire? I get combinations of 300, 301, 302, 303, and 304 after 4 ignition cycles or so with my 03 Civic 5 speed. I've changed plugs and coils, cleaned the EGR, EGR/intake channels, and cleaned the throttle body. Not quite sure what it could be. Sometimes the code goes away if I don't clear it. I have had to change the cam position sensor twice in the last 4 years and had valves adjusted about 3 years back, if that helps point to a possible cause. Thanks in advance!
Very informative now i know where to look tnx
Thank you some much for your help
Thanks for the tip on switching coil packs. Good idea
No problem 👍
Yes, that put me one step ahead of the the game when one doesn't have the extra tools and tech to diagnose the spark plugs and/or coils! Good job on this video!

Thanks brother!
By any chance would you or anyone reading this post know how or why is water getting inside where the ignition coil sits in?

Right on!
Hi I have a 2007 Liberty 3.7L V6, 117,000 miles. Owned it since 67,000 miles. It operated perfectly for the first 30,000 miles and then it started getting a #1 Cyl misfire code P0301. It also seldomly gets a #1 cyl fuel injector circuit open P0201. It must be a very mild fault as the misfire freeze frame data shows it always happens at less than 350 rpm and when cleared it comes back immediately at next startup, cold or hot. So it seems to only happen once on startup as its moving up to regular idle speed. The miss isnt noticeable when driving or idling. Its getting 15.5 mpg fuel mileage. Doesnt burn oil. Doesnt smoke. Has great power. I've changed plugs and coils but no difference. Cleaned air intake, air filter, and ran cleaner through system. I've cleaned and inspected the injector plug and all wires but no difference. Dry / wet compression test of #1, 3 and 5 cylinders all read good: 160 / 175 psi.
I'm wondering if there's a mild wire defect for that injector, or just a flakey connection somewhere. Has anyone tried to use a new set of compatible gauge wires and run them to a place closer to the injector control? I can't see where the wires go though.
I'm not sure if I should just live with this, or troubleshoot it more. I don’t care about the engine light as we don't have emission requirements. Now that I know the compression is good, I'm not so worried about it.
Any suggestions of what to do next? Thanks!
My 04 Prius had been a little off when coming to stops every so often (felt like a standard does when stalling). I thought it was the brakes at first, but kept driving since they were fine otherwise. after a couple weeks of daily driving (and a 2 hour trip over a mountain) I checked it and it threw this P0301 code, drove it to the auto shop and it started smoking on the way there. I changed my spark plugs and coil packs and it wasn’t smoking anymore, but then one day my check engine light came on. I checked and it still had the P0301 on. I’m sure there’s dirt in my fuel line after an attempt at taking the injectors out. I’m not sure what else to look for since it wasn’t the spark plugs/coils and the smoke and I dont have the means to tow it. The battery is currently dead and the last time I drove it, it started barely accelerating to my driveway and sounded very rough.
Original owner of an ‘07 Prius. Ignition coils in two of them were bad and the other two were less than good but just ok. Checked on a meter. Plugs were light to dark grey after 40,000 miles. Changed all plugs and coils. $750. Labor was $150 included in the $750. 250,000 miles on it. Passed CA smog after a 100 miles of driving. Now I can drive it another two years and then make a decision. 👍
Nice, thanks
You're welcome, Denis!
My nissan murano 2009 guves PO420 and PO430 and today also PO301, is it the oxygen sensor that needs to be extended or changed?
Funny though. I had the worker at an Autozone run the engine check. He got this p0301 and wanted to sell me an entire ignition coil for about $90.00 Since I also have one of those, I ran a check myself. I have the p0305 and it turned out to be the spark plug.
Wow! So sorry to hear that happened to you. Glad you had a way to double check that scan though and get your spark plug back in working order. Happy and safe driving! 😊
Haha, same thing but they suggested replacing the head gasket.
Hmmm i have the same issue i got p0301 i swapped the coil pack and i still have the issue😭

Did you figure it out?
So here's what I did, I swapped out the ignition coils from bank 1 and bank 2 clean them up with some brake cleaner and the cold went away. So is my problem my ignition coils? I already replaced the spark plugs and the control valve solenoids.
Any chance I could be getting a misfire in cylinder 1 because it’s been subzero temps where I live ?
This is a very informative video, unfortunately, my cylinder is misfiring and I needed to replace my coil and I had no idea what that was until I watched this video. UGhhhhh........
get the coils at amazon, they're pretty cheap for the set and change the spark plugs while you're at it, your car will appreciate it.
I have a misfire cylinder 1 on my 2010 gmc 1500 and I love my truck. I only had changed the spark plugs and went away for about a month then came back with the same problem. Spark plug went black at the bottom. And I’m no fixer trucker dude. And have no shop in my town. Anyone help.
0301 cylinder misfire does not mean you should start buying several parts. Means you should check that one spark plug first and that one plug wire first.
Start with the basics.
Great point. Thank you, Benny!
@@fixdapp I would never have thought that my IAC valve could cause a random misfire. But the new IAC valve fixed it!!!
I have code 301 and 300 I don't know if I need new coils or spark plugs
The quality of fuel is significant.
Maybe a higher octane would help your vehicle, or try not run it on corn cobs?
I would suspect the wire set first damaged by heat under the hood, and maybe fresh spark plugs correctly gapped.
..the spark plug wire is dead at 300+ Ohms.
..and the wire from the coil should be zero Ohms.
..you need good spark, maybe the coil is weak?
Thank you for the coil check procedure.
What does mean of the 1/3 general
I’ve been an owner of a FIXD scan tool for about 5 years. It has paid for itself 20fold. This OBD scanner has correctly diagnosed problems while a scanner at a major auto parts was throwing out all sorts of bogus info! Trust me…all scan tools are NOT created equal.
Great video easy to understand thank you very much 👍🏼
i did have a p0301 on my 2009 escape with a 2.5 and it was a bad valve and to change the valves it was 1500$ i decide to buy another engin
I got a PO302 code on my 2012 Ford Transit. I checked my oil and was low, so I filled it. Then I switched 302 with 301. Started it up and it ran good. So I was assuming (hoping) the problem was oil. I cleared the cobe and all was well for 2 months. Today I started with engine banging and poor idle. There were NO codes on my dash. Now I looked at my phone and was getting an issue on 1 & 2. I couldn't understand why my dash wasn't reading a miss fire in one. It onley shoed up in 'history' My friend works on cars said my FIXD reading on my phone probadly showed this fault right after I originally switched parts. I thought it would automatically show up on my dash as an alert. WRONG! The past history stays on the phone for your history reference. I don't know if I explained this well. $180.00 later with 4 new injector and I am running great with no laber costs. This may require a bit of thinking if you are not savey with codes like i'm not. ALSO. Auto Zone informed me the injecter I bought have a lifetime warranty.....I asked why the injecters in the van weren't got for the vehicles lifetime. They said they were a ford product, they see it all the time. Oh well.
Thank you for the video. I have a misfire code on one of the cylinders. After doing various diagnoses, it has been definitely determined that the issue is with a bad ground wire on the fuel injector connector on the cylinder with the misfire code.
I replaced the entire ground wire for that cylinder with the misfire code from the fuel injector connector all the way to the ECM just to be sure, even though I didn't even see a broken or chewed up wire. This didn't resolve the issue.
The car has a V6 cylinder and I also diagnosed the other 5 fuel injector connectors. The ground wires for all those 5 fuel injector connectors are fine.
Since replacing the ground wire didn't resolve the issue, is there anything you can suggest I try out at this point?
For the time being, as an alternative method, I decided to splice and share the functional ground wire from the adjacent cylinder. In other words, I now have two fuel injector connectors sharing the same ground wire. This method has worked and has resolved the misfire issue. However, my concern is if this method is an acceptable resolution or is there any type of downside or hazard this could cause? Thank you!
Can you share me pictures of how you did that? I own a 2014 dodge charger sxt and everything that I do does not solve my misfire 1 issue
2010 Buick Lucerne. I changed plugs 18000 miles ago. Car started to run rough. Progressively worse. Inniva scan tool said misfire on cylinder 1. Never got a check engine light. Not sure how that was. Basically checked resistance of plug wires. Cleaned mass airflow. Then found out it was a bad plug by swapping into cylinder 4 and it misfired there. Plug looked fine .
What did you end up doing i have a cylinder misfire on my buick as well they recommended me to get a whole new engine…

hi my mechanic said it might be the spark plug, can i buy te part for him or will it have to be him to do it?
Hey Fred! good question, you can buy the part yourself if you'd like. Just make sure it fits with your year, make, and model. If you want to replace it yourself there is a helpful video in the link description, or you can bring it to your mechanic to have him/her do it. Cheers!
Geez, $1500 for a fuel injector+labor? I live in England, that's more than what my current car cost to buy lol If the repair costs for my car ever exceed the initial purchase, i just scrap it and get another preowned car. My £800 honda civic has been going strong with 183k miles for the last 4 years =P
If it’s 1 cylinder it’s not a fuel filter a air leak. It’s spark plug fuel injector or coil meaning wire to. Other than that get ready to spend
I changed, spark plugs, coil and injector still have same problem..HELP!any idea whats the problem?
Question. If there is a leak …. And you check the spark plugs and coil. Could the leak damage either 2. Then if you replace it. Would it still Throw a code or no. Even if the leak isn’t fix. ….. in my situation I have a 2015 mustang gt with 15,000 miles. That was running perfect. I just had the intake manifolds changed to a 350gt manifold and got hp tune …. I haven’t been able to drive it. 1st it was running lean. We found a lose clamp…. I picked up the car today drive it 10 block and the check engine light started blinking going into a limp mode for about 15 second. Then the check engine light stayed on. Code was misfire in cylinder 1 and 6 Please help lol.

It was a bad fuel injector running great again 😊
2009 tahoe hybrid 6.0. P0301. Oil all over spark plug threads and ceramic tab. I cant figure out if its rings or valve seals because I cant do compression (dry or wet) because I dont have the tool to tell computer to crank. Any advice?
Oil on the spark plugs can be a few different things. This can be caused by a faulty pcv allowing too much oil back into the system. There are a few different tech bulletins addressing these issues. If the oil is in the spark plug wells, this can be caused by a leaking valve cover gasket, and/or o-ring seals. If the above listed are not the issue, a leak down/compression test is a good place to start. You will need a cylinder leak down tester and a compression gauge. This can be difficult to do and you may need to find a local repair shop to do this for you.
@@fixdapp yes. I grew up in a shop from 10yo. I changed the valve cover with faulty PVC to the new gm part with new gasket, Didnt help. I've done all the research possible. I've found the bulletins.
I know how to do leakdown and compression tests but it's a hybrid so I have to have a tech2 scanner and place the computer in crank mode because it wont crank otherwose being that its hybrid. I just dont have the tool and GM will charge me easy 500 to test.
Its leaking on the spark side threads. I've heard there is no spark tube gaskets because they screw right into the head. So that leaves valve guide seals or ring blowby. Guess I have to invest in a tech2 scanner :/
If you can reply and tell me the likeliness of it being ring problem or gasket problems base on symptoms I'd appreciate it. It misfires so bad that it wants to chug and shut off..vibrates the whole truck, and I lose reaction time when I press the gas...bad lag time.
i got this code after an oil change. Ever heard of that happening after oil change.
Auuugh.... I'm at a loss. the first time to check engine light came on the car died was sputtering I change the spark plugs everything was fine. We put a new gas cap and change the fuel pump. New air filter and cabin filter. We checked the ignition coils adding seafoam to the gas we checked for any vacuum leaks we cleaned the throttle and my car is still sputtering
With a rough running car it is always best to diagnose the issue first. Most of the time a quick scan of the car and getting the related fault codes will point you in the right direction. You are definitely on the right track to diagnosing an engine misfire/rough running issue, however due to the complexity of most newer automobile engines, you will need to find out what fault codes are being thrown then reassess. For example, if it is a fuel supply issue, you replaced the fuel pump but could have an issue on the injector side. This could be a leaking injector, dirty injector etc. Give it a scan and check faults.
Oil or antifreeze in spark plug tubes..
Valve cover seal..
I just washed my motor and that code came up! it sakes! I hope it fixes when it drys out! what do you think it could be!
If an engine misfires when it's wet, the most likely problem is a bad spark plug cable or other ignition system component.

Can I bad catalytic converter make a misfire
Hello everyone, so i have a 2008 Jeep wrangler that recently got that code. Mine has "p0301"
I took it to a mechanic, turns out hes telling me i need a new engine because of it?... that i have low engine comoression and he gave me numbers between 130s.... i have no idea on what to do. Should i be concerned? I cant afford a new engine, none the less a new car. Can anyone give me their opinion?
There could me many more reasons. Starting with timing chain/belt to electrical issues…
Does anyone know what would be going on with my truck?
I have a 2010 Dodge Dakota with a 3.7L V6 engine. It has a check engine light that has been coming on and off for a little while. Whenever I start it up it makes this puttering sound that seems to get better as i drive it. I have also taken it to a shop and they told me that Cylinder 1 is misfiring but they are stumped on the cause of it. They are telling me that these issues may not even be connected and there might be 2 things wrong with my truck. They are recommending I replace the engine as trying to find out and fix whatever is wrong would not be worth it. What should I do? Sell my truck off as is for whatever I can get for it or try to fix it???!? A new engine plus labor will likely be at least 4 grand :(
Change mechanics for starters...in the end if you dont get it sorted out and get a new vehicle DON'T buy another dodge...unless you like continuous wiring and electric issues

Can't find cylinder 1 on a 2000 impala 3400 sfi motor
I found 3 and 5 cylinders but can't find cylinder 1 on 3.4 liter engine
If you are standing in front of your vehicle, cylinder one is located on the back side of the engine basically under/ bottom side of the alternator. The wires on the coil pack (located on the top of the engine with the spark plug wires connected to it) are numbered from the factory. Follow the labeled number one wire from the top to the back side of the engine, this will locate the #1 cylinder.
My 1991 3000 GT is misfiring. Please help.
What Code are you getting? Did you watch the video?
No need to get codes for misfire. Turn your car on. Open the hood and remove one spark plug cable, if the car gets worse, plug it back in, that’s not the faulty cylinder thats misfiring. Keep doing this until you remove a spark plug cable and there is no difference in the performance of the car. This means that that cylinder is the one misfiring. First thing you do, check the cable/coil (whichever one it has), make sure it’s not broken and shorting out if it looks good continue. Second, check for spark, if no spark you’re gonna check your distributor cap (if it has one), if it has a coil and no spark, it’s gonna be a bad coil. If you have spark, take the spark plug out and check for any defect. If it’s fine smell the bottom of the spark plug, it should smell like gasoline. If it does not smell like gas, it’s your injector. If you check all these and everything is fine your problem will be a vacuum leak or a valve in the cylinder head is stuck open (not likely).
It’s misfiring because your cylinder drawing has the valves moving the wrong direction.
I think my issue is beyond all of those components. I replaced my fuel injectors, spark plugs, coils, PVC valve, upper intake gasket, and I still have a po301 code.
Same here..new wires.. plugs..injectors..cap ..rotor ..coil..and fuel filter...then I found a vacuum leak and thought I solved the problem. Nope.. still getting a 301code. Need to check my o2 sensors next I guess. Maybe pull the throttle body for cleaning...but I'd think that would affect all cylinders? One guy here wrote that he found a bad/no ground wire to his no 1 fuel injector ..youd think the it wouldn't work at all if no ground.. but mine only seems to miss at a light or stop sign..in gear... trying to relearn the idle valve or whatever it's called but it won't go into that mode...maybe the valve is gummed up..hell I don't know.
You may need a air compression test for your cylinders
@@ladytnt491 I did that too ...early on. Funny though..it actually read a little higher than normal compression. I wonder if that means something like a bent pushrod on the exhaust or something? Or could of been an err on my part...but there was definitely ample cylinder pressure to say head gaskest and the rest of the motor was okay
Problem solved! After removing and cleaning all components of the throttle body...including the idle control air valve (which I would highly recommend on any vehicle as old as mine ..2002) I redirected my attention to the 301 code number one cylinder. Thinking to myself this has got to be something simple since the compression test showed good. Pulled the injector and found that the o-ring was cut. Also noticed the fuel rail was not sitting centered on the rubber seat. New o-ring and adjusted the seat and she idles perfect now...including in gear. No more stalling during acceleration either. Used assembly lube this time around to seat the fuel injector...slipped in like a glove
Wrong my coil cost me $70 original part. And labor is like $20 which I believe is a waste when you can do it by yourself! It’s so easy and the spark plugs too
Don’t switch coil, unplug them first
it could also mean that ur piston rings are fried mate.
We got a Hyundai Elantra 2021 with 48k miles giving this error. .
Okay so here is the problem! I have a 2002 Toyota Corolla. Getting the code so I change the fuel injector on 1, changed all spark plugs, and coils are good because I switched them and the codes didn’t change. Engine is running rough. Shakes when I get to a stop or just idling. Mechanic said the cylinder may just be fucked
Ohh.. so what ended up happening??
