Good car, bad example - The Carmudgeon Show - Ep. 31

  • Like a magnificent grand piano that needs to be tuned, you can drive a vintage car that drives nothing like it should.
How, where, and who maintains a car can influence how it drives, even more than any inherent goodness or badness from the factory. There is some variation between cars when new, but it’s minimal - the big difference comes from how they’re treated by their owners. And, perhaps more important, the competence level of the mechanic works on them.
Derek postulates that one-owner cars are often some of the best, because that person paid full new price for the car and treats it as such; subsequent owners who purchased at a discount might treat it as a cheap used car. The flip-side is that some problems crop up gradually, so the owner might not notice.
Both Carmudgeons have driven good and bad examples of many cars - from W124 Mercedes to Ferrari 308 GT4s. And the variation between them is huge. This is another reason why Jason doesn’t want anyone to drive his Scirocco: maybe they’ll realize it’s not perfect. Because no old car is.
But of course his Scirocco is close. ;)
    =
The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.

Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile - and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.
Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering - which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.

I have a nice story for the „look after your car well“ part: There is a guy in germany who is racing a F40 LM and since i love F40s and follow the garage that maintains it I watched it at a few races and trackdays. And one trackday the F40 catched fire and i just remember seeing flames out of the engine bay. I was really sad that something that horrible happened to such ab awesome car so I asked the guys at the shop how it could burn down and if there wasnt anything to prevent it. The guy just laughed at me and said that the thing burned down many times and they build it up everytime and it gets raced again. I found it really heartwarming that there is a guy out there that uses his million dollar car the way it’s intended and doesn’t fear bills to keep it racing

around 18:00 you nailed it: many of these cars at some point are just used cars. They fall into the wrong hands and they deteriorate. I usually end up with them at the end of a string of negligent or abusive owners, so when I can get one from the original owner, that is a keeper.

Yes, there are things you can always do to improve the car, but that only happens when you drive the car.
These slammed cars are used as cruisers. Essentially they are modified to the point that they aren't drivable, and that is due to the owners not driving, but only riding in them. Missing the essence.

The S2000s and E46 M3 (Z4M+Z3 S54) also had many variability due to the valve adjustment history, the retainers, and maintenance while still being electronic fuel injection.

In the Ducati world, there’s enough factory variance/slop in some of the timing marks on the camshafts and crankshaft that you can set everything to factory specs and the timing is off by several degrees. Sometimes timing the cams properly can give you a 5 horsepower bump and the bike runs better.

18:16: Not everybody... I bought a used E63 when it’s price was less than half of what it cost new. Because i could not afford a new one, and they didn’t build the car with that engine anymore anyway(the NA 6.2). But it gets every bit of maintenance it needs in time at a reputable workshop and original parts. (It just doesn’t get washed and detailed as much as it probably should.) I want to keep it as long as possible for how it drives and sounds, and i prefer the ergonomics and user interface(s) to what is in use now.
As for old mercedes steering, i had a W123 300D wagon once: it got worse gradually yes, but you immediately notice it when there are wind gusts from the side… Not beeing in germany means were i live, we only have 130kph of highway speed limit, but as soon as it got to around 3 fingers width of play it was scary (to me) with wind gusts from the side.

Talking about electrical controlled cars, I had a work HiAce in Japan that had a former life as a long distance taxi.
The accelerator peddle was very lurchy off idle with an annoying dead spot between. 0 and 20% throttle. Made it an absolute devil in the snow. (Fun skidz though, even if accidental)
Turns out the throttle position sensor was knackered from highway driving at "just off idle".
Electronic systems go out of whack just like mechanical ones I guess.

the power difference is because of the valve springs, if they don't contract fully at high speed (high RPMs) they start to lose elasticity and you get into harmonics problems when you push them (valve float) and extra pumping losses because the springs are harder than they should
there is also the camshaft flatspots because of sustained RPMs or idle, and when you try to push them you get lower torque and power because the valves arn't opening fully as they should when the cams were new

On the question of modifications; almost any car can benefit from Improvements to suspension, tires/wheels and brakes. Additionally, a less restrictive intake and exhaust is almost invariably better.... that is normally the extent of what I do, aside from replacing OEM cost compromised components with higher quality aftermarket bits as they wear or fail. That’s pretty much my rule for mods.

this whole thing about how cars are bastardized, once they start getting old and expensive to maintain... this is exactly the point when someone says 1owner car or 2nd owner car. Once that car is bought for a FRACTIOn of the price when it was new, Hyphen nails it and says the level of maintenance it gets is directly proportional to the price paid. I will now relate this to subaru, in so many bugeyes are straight molested because they were cheap (still can be), but those few first owner or 2nd owners remember the sticker price they paid and in turn, committed to the level of maintenance that comes with that. You guys talk about it on the EURO level very well but it also remains true in concept to all those import Japanese and even Hyundai Genesis vehicles - but question is, DO CURRENT NEW LUXURY VEHICLE OWNERS EVEN CARE ABOUT MAINTENANCE? show me a new car owner that maintains their vehicle? its rare they even know what the term TIRE PRESSURE MEANS.
