I had the honor of training with Carley back in '98 or '99. Clark was a young teen then and already an amazing jiu jitsu player. Both were classy, unbelievable teachers and changed my life for the better. Carley went above and beyond to treat us all like family, and 13 years later I still have the shirt he pulled down off the wall of the academy for me on my last day before I moved out of state. I have the utmost respect and miss them.
Carley is so right about knowing how to fight standing up and winning when in the clinch. If you can throw, sweep and takedown your opponent, your confidence and skill will increase. You can defend yourself in all phases of a fight.
Quite possibly my favorite video ever on RUclips. Fascinating guy. A legend. Would love to take a private lesson from The Lion of the Gracie Family one day!!!!!
Carly pretended to kick me in the balls once I guess he didn’t like that I was so naturally talented Jiujitsu back in the day I realized right then that he was a punk he said you’re really talented at jujitsu I guess he met but I just kicked you in the balls what a turkey
Great interview and really cool techniques showed, but I don't know about Master Carley being the oldest member of the family still teaching. Three of his four living older brothers; Grandmasters Carlos Robson & Reyson, and Master Reylson still teach. Granted, Reyson and Carlos Robson only do seminars (and are the heads of their own federations), but Reylson does have a school in Las Vegas (not sure if he teaches full or part time). Maybe he means the oldest one teaching full-time.
I don't know about Carley vs Rorion specifically, but Carlos Gracie, Jr. confirmed it several years ago that when they were at Carlos, Sr.'s ranch in Teresopolis, he and Helio would pit their sons against each other to see who was better. He did mention Carley and Relson having to go at it, though he didn't say who won. Also Carley not only looks a bit like Carlson, he's also 1 of only 3 Gracies to get their black belt from Carlson. Their brother Rocian, and Carlson, Jr. are the other two.
Larry Medina no. Carley and Carlson are both sons of Carlos Gracie Sr. What people tend to forget is that Carlos Gracie Sr barely trained his lineage. It was all Helio.
He’s probably wearing socks because he’s a diabetic and needs to protect his feet. I remember hearing that Carlson Sr was a really bad diabetic himself.
You are the 2nd or 3rd guy to ask about that, I saw same questions on the MMA Underground forums. Next time we do a shoot with jiu-jitsu guys, we will tell them to take their socks off!
Carlos was smaller, the photos prove it and no sport bjj existed until the 70s,it was all self defense and real fighting. Carlos had 1 official fight which he lost.
I have. Pretty much exactly like the video. Very personable, very humble, I still remember when I signed up an attended my first class (I signed up without him being present). When he saw me he walked over to me straight away and extended his hand and said 'Hello my name is Carley, what's your name?'.
joopsnoop Yea, I think your dad getting beat up probably bothers you a little more. Also, while Rorion and Rickson are brothers, they haven't always been the best of friends; evidence of this is the fact that Rorion had Royce fight in the early UFC's, despite Royce being inferior to Rickson. Rickson had to travel to Japan just to fight MMA. For a long time there has been a rift between the "Helio Branch" and certain members of the "Carlos Branch" of the Gracie family--especially between Carlson and Helio. Due to the UFC, Americans are more familiar with Helio and his sons, but in Brazil Carlson Gracie's team dominated jiu-jitsu. Carlson was Carley's instructor.
I need a question answered by the jujitsu community. Why does the Gracie’s who have been training jujitsu from childhood don’t have those gross looking cauliflower ears like most grapplers do,what are they doing different that prevent this from happening to most of them.
I have been training in Kung Fu and Karate since the age of 10. I want to spar with this master. I am DAMNED sure I would get my ass handed to me, but think of the learning!
This f'er is trying to replace Helio with Carlos Sr in some of his stories, lol... Carlos Sr was a hippie with 20 kids. He wasn't teaching Jiu jitsu. He was balls deep into the Gracie diet. It was Helio that was teaching Jiu jitsu and modifying techniques.

Andy K is Clark his son?

Carley didn't teach the wrong crowd to make profits. This fact alone gives him a win over the rest of his family.
Carley Gracie was promoted to Grand Master status, 9th degree Red Belt, at the USFBJJ annual belt promotion ceremony on Dec 9, 2012.
Quite possibly my favorite video ever on RUclips. Fascinating guy. A legend. Would love to take a private lesson from The Lion of the Gracie Family one day!!!!!
Excellent interview! Carley is a Brazilian true hero!
I've read that when they were teenagers, Carlos and Helio would have Carley and Rorion go against each other, and Carley would win every match.
Rolls beat
Rorion easy Carly wares socks Need I say more
But I wouldn’t doubt it it’s possible
Maybe?
Neither one of them are very athletic
Carly pretended to kick me in the balls once I guess he didn’t like that I was so naturally talented Jiujitsu back in the day I realized right then that he was a punk he said you’re really talented at jujitsu I guess he met but I just kicked you in the balls what a turkey
He doesn't seem as arrogant as some of the others.
He is absolutely right about the stand up aggression defense. The Gracie Combatives program teach the self defense of jiu jitsu first.

man that is peter goldman from the early part of the video. I remember him from 10thplanet.

barrettokarate is Carlson his father?
Larry Medina no. Carley and Carlson are both sons of Carlos Gracie Sr. What people tend to forget is that Carlos Gracie Sr barely trained his lineage. It was all Helio.
@@segura9 ur prob a renzo or rickson student to think that lol
@@sebastincampospeyrou6823 not at all. Just stating the facts. There are books about it.
It's interesting that Carlson Sr. and Carley look alike but nothing like Reyson, Reylson, Robson....Isn't Carley born much later of Carlos Sr.'s sons?
he seems like a cool guy.
Had the Honor to train with him a few times. ❤
I don't know why the other members of the Gracie Family like Rickson or others talk badly about him. He seems like a cool guy.
I believe he is in his early 60's. According to his Wikipedia entry, he was about 22 in 1972.
He’s probably wearing socks because he’s a diabetic and needs to protect his feet. I remember hearing that Carlson Sr was a really bad diabetic himself.
HESPECT!
Did you get a chance to train with Carey? Or even roll with him
I've read that Carley Gracie was family champion. Is this true?
How old is he?
You are the 2nd or 3rd guy to ask about that, I saw same questions on the MMA Underground forums. Next time we do a shoot with jiu-jitsu guys, we will tell them to take their socks off!
Wait what...Helio modified because he was small and into self defense. Carlos Sr. was into sport competitions.
Carlos was smaller, the photos prove it and no sport bjj existed until the 70s,it was all self defense and real fighting. Carlos had 1 official fight which he lost.
How is Carley related to Carlos Jr?
+joopsnoop Carley is his older half-brother.
Carlos Gracie Sr lineage is more technical and well developed
Carlos Gracie Sr barely trained his lineage. Helio Gracie trained them all, including Carlson. So there you go.
has anyone here have trained with Carley Gracie? How was your experience?
I have. Pretty much exactly like the video. Very personable, very humble, I still remember when I signed up an attended my first class (I signed up without him being present). When he saw me he walked over to me straight away and extended his hand and said 'Hello my name is Carley, what's your name?'.
He looks a little bit like his brother Carlson. They even have the same raspy voice, only Carley is fluent in English.
He looks like Reylson.
Does anyone know why Rickson and Carley don't get on?
Because Rickson was all emotional about being the best. I think they are getting on better now that Rickson is older and wiser.
+JamesMMcCann
Because Carley beat up Helio (and Helio very much deserved it).
+joopsnoop
Wrong.
Perhaps. Don't discount Rickson's ego in any of this. Also the legal stoush between Carley and Rickson's brother may have contributed.

"Master Carley Gracie Osss...."
oss
He kinda looks like Carlson.
Oss!
is that clark gracie holy shhit
Nah. That is his brother. He's a brown belt now and you can see him in a lot of clark's video.
13:36 I wish
I have been training in Kung Fu and Karate since the age of 10. I want to spar with this master. I am DAMNED sure I would get my ass handed to me, but think of the learning!
whats up with the socks? grandmaster-way? :D
Easy! Their feet are cold! They're old men!
i'm glad to see him wear socks. people should grapple with rubberized socks or small shoes. having someone's foot next to you an unhygenic
infoguy1978 maybe your unhygienic.

And you know ow cuz you were there…fanboy who thinks he knows it all…yuck.
Try not to say anything so you don’t show you’re stupid?
