Xande changed my entire understanding of half guard, now Saulo has changed my understanding of butterfly guard. Can't wait to put into practice some of these details - thanks so much Professor!
Saulo stopped by my school once when he was in town. It was truly amazing watching him effortlessly toy with local black belts. It was like their first day on the mat. So many levels to thus stuff
Besides their top class bjj skills, what really impresses me from the Ribeiro Brothers are their communication skills. They're very good in cutting the complexity of the techniques and explaining them in plain english -or portuguese-. Lucky ones those who can learn directly from them!
This man is not only a legend in the sport, he is a damn fine teacher as well. Much respect! :)
10:04 = the kick of the butterfly is the whip.
Well that just ended about 1 year of confusion and frustration for me.
instablaster.
Saulo,
You breaking it down step by step is the key to learning this sweep. I'm very happy you post these video lesson's please keep posting.
I once went to a seminar with Leonardo Xavier. That man is ridiculously skilled. His technique is smooth, effortless, and immaculate. If I were down in TX, I would definitely train with him.
I was asking the exact same question. There's many butterfly techniques and instructionals, but nobody saying HOW to get there in the first place. Thanks Saulo!
As a Judoka love to see the image of Jigoro Kano in the dojo, respect bjj, i always find great little things for ne waza.
Sr. D he is also a judo black belt as well sir
This is awesome! This video has helped my butterfly game so much in just one class. I was sweeping really big guys easily where they used to give me so much more trouble before. I wasn't posting my arm before, I never realized how important that was until last class. Thank you so much for this video!
Saved this video a long time ago and it's still awesome to watch and learn. Will be great to drill this movement with all the details taught here.
“It’s a little bit of a lot of things.”
This is absolutely gold! Brilliant.
I have been watching a lot of videos sweep from the butterfly, by far this is the number one, the best video. Thank you Sensei Ribeiro! This is awesome!!!!
That was awesome. I love the butterfly Guard. Thank you very much Professor Saulo Ribeiro for sharing your knowledge.
This is one of the best butterfly instructional I’ve found. So precise!
As a white belt, I can appreciate the technical detail shown. Perfect tutorial by Professor Ribeiro. Oos
As a fellow white belt, it's really quite stunning how much detail there is in this sport. By far the most complex martial art I've ever trained.
@@richardlancelot3829 but isn't it beautiful. How are your techniques now after 2 years? I am newbie 3 months and I make the huge mistake of rabbit holing on youtube.
@@guam58 Still learning and getting better! But I have definitely gotten quite good.
RUclips videos are fine to learn from, as long as you keep it to quality ones like the above one. Just remember to focus mostly on your fundamentals.
Fantastic!! Excellent idea to force the butterfly guard. I struggle with getting into the correct start and I usually get in the position from a mistake my partner makes. I can't wait to try this from now on.
Thank you so much for this video, I have been playing with butterfly sweeps in rolls with zero percent success, seeing a good entry is the part I was missing.
So much wisdom! This is essential for any butterfly guard player.
Does Saulo really go around and teach students individually during class? Sweet!
Simple, but beautiful sweep set
It seems like the transition here is a really great way go for a triangle. You pull on his gi, push on his leg, and as he flattens out you can try to throw the leg over. I'll have to try this.
mestre Saulo excelente explicação. o que mais foi importante foi a dica d como chegar corretamente armar a guarda. obrigado. aluno do mestre Fernando boi goiania
GREAT vid. So helpful to learn how to transition into butterfly and great details for the sweep.
I see this video in the time that was uploaded, I never had used butterfly sucessifully, but now is my favorite one, thanks!
His voice sounds different for some reason. But such great details given here. Much respect
Great teacher. Focused on the basics.
Thank you Saulo Ribeiro! Great explanations.
This is amazing, thats was My biggest problema with the butterfly guard.
THX for putting this out
What a great teacher

Great teaching skill. No scooping out!
Saulo Ribeiro é sempre um dos grandes heoirs do bjj do amazonas
7:12 AH-eeeoo! Eeeaahhheeoooeee ahhee!!... aee. Saulo is the man. Best technique around.
Almost sounds like Muay Thai lmaoo
At Rocha Bjj in Oakland we are a Ribiero Academy as well and we call this :Ivy League Jiujitsu!
I’ve watched this video a good 6 or 7 times before, I still can’t get over the noise he makes at 9:30 😂😂
That's how I sound when I'm trying to drop a deuce that is resisting my efforts.😂
great example professor Saulo, thank you.
Saulo is an amazing teacher!!! Great stuff! Oss!
Amazing tutorial! Thanks Master Saulo!
One thing is his english is very good...great stuff
AMAZING video. Thank you professor!
I trained with leo xavier for a while, who trained under saulo, and they are very similar in their expressions
thanks, saulo.
Love how they all say boom lol
Muito bom , admirável a explicação
Ver detailed and clear explanation! Nice!
One former opponent of Saulo disliked this video
saulo got his english better but i miss the old saulo accent
He seet, and he scoop out!
Saulo is the best!
Great video that is very informative!
One question, however, what would you do to counter or prevent the opponent from standing up at the point where you establish separation, just before scooting forward into position ready to sweep?
Keep your base low when he is trying to sweep. But, really it starts before he is in there. Don't let him get grips. Make your own grips and stand up.
ok im new to bjj, but i am generaly matched up against a purple belt when rolling as i am larger than most of the people in the gym. this is the exact setup that this purple belt almost always uses against me and i cant find a good counter for it. can anyone send me a vid link or at least message me some stuff to practice so i can stop getting swept and fighting the rest of the time from the bottom of side control.
A master of the craft
great teacher! thanks
Damn..I wish I could train there...
Boom!
I had the same question - Could it have been "classical guard"?
LEGEND
Saulo is the king
Butterfly ..always go into the guy..not go away from him! EXACTLY...in butterfly you seek for contact!
couldnt be. classic or classical would be open or closed guard in my opinion. i think. not sure though lol
SO good!
awesome vid!!!!!
Saulo rules.
love this
Thank you prof ! Oss
Who gave this 8 thumbs down? wtf!
The guys that tapped out to him in the finals. Lol.
