    One important reason due to which this fort was unconquered is , Siddis often aligned themselves with a power rival to the one attacking or besieging the fort, so their allied power kept the attacking kingdom busy in fighting somewhere else and kept the siddi's and janjira fort supplied.

      @@mangopudding5979 it wasn't captured by the marathas. The campaign you are probably referring to is the offensive conducted by peshwa bajirao against the Siddis. While the Marathas captured all coastal territories like danda, rajapuri, north konkan etc Siddis quickly capitulated and made a deal with the peshwa to be the Chhatrapati's tributary vassal in turn they could keep the Janjira fort. So they still controlled the fort.

    I am from Murud Janjira and I would like to say that Janjira was under the Siddi rule. Siddis worked as allies of Adilshah of Bijapur and later for the Mughals. That's true that Maratha king Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was never able to conquer the fort Janjira but his son, king Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj once besieged this fort in 1682, nearly choked the Siddis to death but had to retreat from the fight to drive back a large Mughal army from his capital, Raigad.
    After many years, Siddi leader was killed in battle with the army of Peshwa Bajirao in 1736. Siddis signed a peace treaty and annual tributaries to Marathas until British took over the region. Then Janjira became a princely state of Siddis in British India and paid taxes to British.
    Padmadurg is one of the sea forts built by Maratha kings in 1676 in Murud to challenge Janjira which was controlled by Siddis and control the other activities in Arabian sea and it is located in the northwest direction of Janjira fort at a distance of about 10 km.

    Jazeera is an Arabic word in origin. It means island. Since then the name Janjira has become popular.
    The characteristic of Janjira is that it is not easy to understand where the entrance of the fort is. One has to enter the fort by wading through water.
    Besides the strong construction and the sea around, there are 572 guns on the banks of the Murud-Janjira. That is why this chain was impenetrable. Among these cannons, the Kalal Bangdi cannon was particularly large and long-ranged.

      It’s a beautiful building, extremely resistant to most conventional siege attacks but as it lacks a harbour I don’t see how attacking it is even worth the effort.

    • @gazpachopolice7211
      @gazpachopolice7211 Год назад +1

      @@chrissmith3587 I meant that the walls need to be slanting to deflect canon fire. The cannons in the fort might have come later.
      This strech of coast has many such island forts or forts at the mouth of rivers, probably to protect trade via the Arabian peninsula from pirates and from invaders.

    • @chrissmith3587
      @chrissmith3587 Год назад +3

      @@gazpachopolice7211 that is a fair point and you can see the cannons shown look to be primitive,
      I recognise the advantage of such a fort, but I question the lack of secure harbour.
      It’d require a significant effort from the mainland to supply and harbour a significant fleet. And without a significant fleet you wouldn’t even have to siege the fort, you just turn away the resupply boats
      Additionally the fort is reduced to a gun platform to attack incoming fleets, there is no offensive capabilities, an important job but the size of the fort is unnecessarily big for that task.
