Davie McPhail, your videos never cease to impress and to teach me something. I've been tying and fishing gurglers for years (actually decades) here in the PNW, I regularly use them for steelhead, searun cutthroat, coho, and occasionally in the rivers for trout during trips to Montana. And yet, even with all that experience, I never thought to tie in a color contrasting throat; as I said, I always learn something form your videos. Thank you.

It's incredible how deft Davie is with his hands. His fingers are quite large, but he maneuvers them with so much experience and muscle memory that they're so amazingly precise. You're truly great at your craft and as someone who doesn't fish, I just enjoy seeing how knowledgeable and masterful you are at making lures.

Watching you tie one of these larger flies is like watching a sculptor. Layer by layer until it's done. Amazing! Thanks for sharing your talent!

This fly is a very good one to try on the Asp's in the local River and gravel pits!
    Thanks for this one.

Excellent pattern for sea trout. It's a well known pattern we often use on the coast line for sea trout at night or early morning. Your the best mr Mcphail! Keep them comming. I just love watching you tie.

Nice , I like these gurgler patterns they’re fun to fish . I tied some this year on 1/0 hooks in white and pink , green and black, purple and pink , and had a great time catching tarpon with them . They would just hammer them . I was at our local fly shop the other day and see 2mm foam now being sold with one side the foam color and the other side is a colored foil kind of like what you were using. I might have to try some of that . As always thanks for sharing.

Nice tie. The Gurgler was originated by Jack Gartside of Boston, MA , USA. Jack has passed but his website is still maintained & has the steps for tying the Gurgler. There is a slight difference in the way he tied it but your version is true to his intent. He originated a number of excellent flies (my favorite is the Sparrow),& it’s well worth your time to explore the site. The Gurgler is a lot of fun to fish & will catch striped bass, bluefish, panfish, salmon & trout. Use long, slow strips with longish pauses if fishing it after dark.

Great fly. Works well for bass in fresh water (or in tiny sizes for sunfish). Invented by the late Jack Gartside.

    Nice!
But instead of folding back, pull and pinch it through the eye and you got a "Rapala fly"
Which will dive down when fished against the current.
Can we get a pattern/video for that?? :)

As an American, I'm not sure if that's a compliment or an insult - LOL. Smallmouth bass love this fly (at least in my area they do).

Interesting pattern and a very skilled tie! First time comment here, as I wanted to send a long overdue thank for the four years or so that I have been watching and learning from your tying. Davie, I wanted to ask whether you ever tie any of Larry Kingrey's "Ape" patterns -- the Papa, Mama or Baby Ape -- for use in Scotland? They are effective here in British Columbia alone as Stoneflies/Hoppers or as part of a dry-dropper. If so, I'd love to see your tie of an "Ape" :) Respectfully, Thomas

      Hi Thomas,
I have heard of Larry Kingrey and seen one or two of his patterns I also watched a video on RUclips a while back of him tying and fishing with them and I really enjoyed watching it..It would be worth looking at tying something similar in a pattern that we fish here..I'm glad you have enjoyed the videos and the flies I have been tying and thank you for the kind words..
      All the very best Davie..
