You’re an inspiration @tightlinevideo. I’m 100% self/RUclips taught and it’s surprisingly difficult to find good tying into, especially gurgler instructional information considering how ubiquitous they are. The 34011 hooks and the foul guard changed the game for me. I think Jack had 2 things in mind when he tied them half way down the shank with the long hook out the back. 1st like you’re saying to keep the vulnerable materials out of the way and out of the mouth of a fish and to get purchase with short strikes. Secondly, and maybe I’m over analyzing this, but the fly cants back and down in the water, and sits exactly like my spooks, poppers, whopper ploppers, and pencil plugs at rest. Genius… and I think that position at rest has gotten me bit more than it hasn’t. Not sure if you’re still tying these, but I like a large googly eye on the bottom front. Maybe it’s a confidence thing, but I like a topwater plug with an attraction point and to knock and rattle, and this has been a great way for me to get that effect with a fly. Thanks again and well done.
Thanks, glad you liked the video. For smallies, adding rubber legs to the pattern works wonders. Just overhand knot two or three pairs onto the hook shank before wrapping the estaz forward. Have fun.
I watch all your videos and when I saw this video I figured I would tie some of these for my week long trip to Florida...wasn't really going just to fish but was toting the flyrod and fished most every morning and evening....my first cast I caught an 18" snook..and the rest of the night couldn't keep the fly away from the jacks!!!! Thanks for all your videos
I'd strongly urge you to get both sets of jaws. I use the large hook groove all the time particularly for streamers. The midge jaws not only hold hooks smaller than an 18 really well, they also allow much better access to the back of the fly which makes things like splitting a microfibbett tail on an RS2 much easier. Glad to hear you're getting the Indexer, it's a great vise.
Great presentation and concise, detailed direction. I'll be watching many more of your videos now that I'm getting back into fly tying. Thank you very mucy. cheers,
the gurgler is my favorite fresh or saltwater fly , lots of different versions , I tye one called hot lips , with top and bottom lip and glue large frog eyes on both sides
Dyna-King Ultimate Indexer, worth every penny. Get the optional midge jaws and the vise will handle anything from an 8/0 down to a size 32. Check out their website, we did the video outlining the features of the vise.
You can use sewing thread in a pinch, but you'll find threads specifically made for tying like UTC Ultra Thread or Uni-Thread much easy to work with and far more durable.
im just about to tie some of these is white and in chartreuse for some nj stripers at the end of november, along with the obligatory clousers and decievers. ill probably also do some bangers, since i will have the hooks anyways.
Thank you for sharing another incredible video. Just out of curiosity, what would be the smallest sized hook you would recommend, if a person wanted to downsize this fly please? Thank you. God bless.
Planing on getting the Ultimate Indexer, just have one last question, the midge jaws dont have the 2 larger game hook grooves from what i know and i didnt know if the grooves would be very important in adding stability for my larger saltwater patterns, just didnt know which jaws to get (even though i dont tie too many size 32 midges). Thanks again!
Hi I just wondered, didn't Jack Gartside's Gurgler use his Gartside's Secret Stuff (GSS) for the body? I understand that the flashy chenelle is easier to work with, but it can't do all the things GSS can do. I just got Jack's Secret stuff book but haven't had a chance to read it yet. I am in hopes the gurgler recipe is in there. All the best, Sean
Nice details you've added to this fly. I like flies that are tied with function in mind. This is a great fly.
THANK YOU!! Crystal flash always gives me a hard time when im tieing it in, i never even thought of wrapping it around the bobbin like that!

Both are great choices if you want rotary capabilities. If you don't do a lot of rotary tying, the Kingfisher Limited Edition looks is really nice.
thanks! learn alot of tips from you! always top notch videos! you tie many famous patterns and the instructions are excellent!
Great presentation and concise, detailed direction. I'll be watching many more of your videos now that I'm getting back into fly tying.

Florkowski72 what colors do you recommend? Tying for largemouth in my local ponds

Just landed my personal best saltwater cutthroat on one of these!
love this,thank you!

What hook and or size of hook would you use for river smallmouth?
Hey paul,
Yeah it was in a small brackish canal
Great Teacher, thank you!
im just about to tie some of these is white and in chartreuse for some nj stripers at the end of november, along with the obligatory clousers and decievers. ill probably also do some bangers, since i will have the hooks anyways.
would this fly work for red fish in the color white. let me know what you think, thanks.
great video! can you make some more on other variations?
Thank you for sharing another incredible video. Just out of curiosity, what would be the smallest sized hook you would recommend, if a person wanted to downsize this fly please? Thank you.
God bless.
I was also looking at the Dyna-King Trekker MSRP and the Baracudda Jr. MSPR, how are they supposed to be?
Planing on getting the Ultimate Indexer, just have one last question, the midge jaws dont have the 2 larger game hook grooves from what i know and i didnt know if the grooves would be very important in adding stability for my larger saltwater patterns, just didnt know which jaws to get (even though i dont tie too many size 32 midges). Looks like a bass killer too
I wonder if you cut a v shaped notch into the head if it would spray water upwards.
Do you recommend a mono weedguard for smaller sizes too (varying thread size with hook size). Seems to make sense.

Thanks for the great video, what sort of (streamer) hook sizes would you recommend for freshwater - for example targeting small and largemouth bass?
Whatnhook would you use for a freshwater popper?
hook?mustad tipe?
Hi Billy! I'm in Florida for the winter near Boynton Beach. Where did you fish with gurglers in the intracoastal waterway? Thanks! Paul
Спасибо!!!
