    It should be noted that in E-Cycles, persistent data only works for animations in which only the camera is moving. The developer is working to expand this to include objects and shaders, and hopes it will happen in 2021.

    So what is the best way to use E-Cycles? I noticed that it seems like it gives you a clone of Blender. Am I able to do all of my work in my regular software and then just use the E-cycles as a rendering node? Also is E-Cycles able to support Multi-GPU in the same way as regular Cycles.
    My business partner and I are really considering E-cycles with OptiX since $300 is a pretty reasonable price for speeding up our renders that much.

    • @AlexPearce3d
      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад +1

      It IS Blender, so you can work in it just like you do with normal blender or you can work in regular blender and then just open that file in Ecycles of you want. They do builds for every release of Blender, so even if you need an older version or the latest version, it's there. Especially with the rtx version, It's a great investment to to speed up render times.

    Interesting, I'll definitely give Octane a swing at this rate. The only qualms I have about going into it is converting my current materials to Octane compatible ones.

    • @AlexPearce3d
      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад +2

      Yeah for sure. The converter works well for simple materials built on the principle bsdf shader, or complex ones that are baked in and attached to the principled bsdf, but beyond that, it's hit or miss. I want to do a deep dive and figure out what breaks the converter. For example I think if you use groups or reroute nodes and it doesn't work, and if that's the case, you might be able to just reorganize your materials before converting and I might be able to build that into my addon somehow. It seems like it would be tricky (if not impossible) to figure that out with python, but I'll give it a go when I have some "free time"

    I have a question.
    I am currently working on a major project.

    My graphics card - 8gb RAM
    Will the octane engine finish render a big scene like this?

    • @AlexPearce3d
      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад

      Hmm it's hard to say. For me, it seems like octane doesn't work as well on larger scenes with my setup, which is one gpu (Nvidia 2080 max q). But also, if it's a major project, I don't really think it's a good idea to try and move it to octane without already knowing octane a bit. It doesn't hurt to try, but there's a lot of little things you need to figure out and then if you need to do anything advanced, it's might be difficult to find the answer.

      I think if you render all the time, and especially if you render animations, absolutely get it if you can afford it.

    Great video! the only thing I can say you got wrong was about network rendering, Blender does support local network rendering or through drop box/google drive with animations. I dont know if you can use network rendering for a single frame tho it might be just animations.

    • @AlexPearce3d
      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад

      That's correct, you can not network render a single frame with blender and you can with Octane. I know you can setup several computers with the same blender project and manually render them all to a Lan folder or Dropbox/Google (I did a video showing how to do it), but as far as I know you cant have one computer that when you press render, it automatically starts all the other computers to render in the network. With Octane you can. The computers have to be on and they have to the the slave program open, but you don't have to have the blender file on several computers, so it's quite a bit more convenient IF you are using a bunch of computers. Do you know any different?

    • @AlexPearce3d
      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад +1

      I guess I should clarify that. In one sense it can be considered network rendering. You can certainly setup a network and if rendering an animation, several computers can render different frames, but you cannot use more than one computer to render tiles of the same frame, so if rendering one image, even if you have 100 computers on a network, you can only use one of them. Does that make sense? I am hoping Cycles X will integrate that feature!

      Your talking about octane, yeah? Did you watch my setting up video? In the viewport do you see ay license errors? If not, go to your world setting and add a new Octane daylight environment and hook it up to a material output, in the environment pin and make sure the material output is set to either all or octane. You could also try adding other lights. You also have to have at least one camera in the scene. Let me mute if that helps.

      I've added a very simple demo scene for you, it has an object two lights and an octane environment, with the necessary settings set up. Let me know if you can open this one and if you get the same errors or not. If not, you can use this a template to start a project or even append an existing scene to it.

      Yeah man. Renderman is coming to blender probably in the next few months. I will definitely be experimenting with that. If I remember correctly, luxcore can't bake lighting to textures which is one reason I haven't tried it yet. Renderman can, and I started to play with it in Maya, but I don't know Maya so I was lost, but yeah I can't wait for renderman to come to blender so I can start to learn it and see if it can work into my pipeline.

      Yes! And there is a 100% free version called prime! Go to otoy. Com and then try or download. I have a video explaining how to install it (it's not straightforward) and there's a Facebook group that's really good to get help. I also have an addon that really helps getting started. It's called ap octane. The free version is ap octane lite and you can get it at Blenderender dot com

    • @AlexPearce3d
      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад

      Is there a real version of Corona in Blender or you will use the standalone? From what I understand, it's not really implemented into blender. And doesn't it also cost a few hundred dollars? If you're looking for other render engines, Redshift is in beta. I bought a license and am doing some tests now. Its not production ready, but there are some good things about it. I released my first video on it recently just a how to install, but I'm hoping to release another this week of my initial impressions.

      @@AlexPearce3d Why light baking, i mean i am an 3d Archviz artist and please tell this topic briefly how i can benefit from it.

    • @AlexPearce3d
      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад

      Web3d stuff. Let's say you have a archviz project that you want to host on sketchfab, but have really nice shadows and perform on an iPhone 8. Baking the shadows from cycles or Octane can really be nice,and perform well because there's no real time lighting, and you an reduce textures like crazy. For example if you have 50 objects, each with a diffuse map, roughness map and normal map, that's 150 textures, but if you bake them, it's 50, and they can be a fraction of the size because you don't need the heavy normal maps. So it loads faster too. For my work we do a lot of web3d stuff, we don't always need to bake lighting, but sometimes it's really helpful.

    • @AlexPearce3d
      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад

      You may not need to bake lighting and I've heard great things about luxcore, just haven't had a real desire to dig into it.

      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад

      Yeah it is not cheap :( but Mathieu, the developer, is very talented and is constantly working on it, improving it, adding features, fixing bugs in cycles (that remain in Blender Cycles). I think the price makes sense, but will be for small/large studios, and people who are being paid decently for their work, not people who are just getting started, unless they just have the money to spend. It took me a while to purchase it, and I did for a specific animation I had to render for work and that alone saved me lots of time, and that was BEFORE persistant data was included, persistant data probably would've saved me another 10 hours of rendering.

    • @joao_belmont
      @joao_belmont 3 года назад +1

      @@AlexPearce3d that’s always a smart move, to wait for a job to pay for the upgrade as needed 👌 So, continuing the conversation, and e-cycles winning the argument by its ease of use and persistent data, I’ll wait to the right time and invest in it. And who doesn’t love a well made product? 😁

    • @AlexPearce3d
      @AlexPearce3d  3 года назад +2

      Hey thanks for the insult! Some things with Redshift are more difficult, some are easier. The most difficult thing about Redshift right now is there are so many bugs that you can spend an hour trying to figure out what you are doing wrong just to find out it is a bug. Since I've released this video, I've created an add-on to help people like me (poor guys/gals who find it difficult) and I'm doing the same for redshift.
