it takes some guts to cover a song like this. It's a song many believe is perfect. It's also an iconic representation of REM's style, though it wasn't a hit. And Isbell resists the urge to change the arrangement significantly but still makes it his own through his vocals. What a tight rope to walk.
I thought the same thing. I wouldn't change a thing about REM's version, but after about 3 seconds of Jason's voice on this, I was hooked. A mellower, gentler, dare I say more accessible version of one of my top 3 REM songs.
Agree. He seems to have changed one note in the opening riff, and that tiny shift changed the color of the song from mustard to faded brown. Masterful. I wonder what MS thinks of it?
When Mr Isbell says "looking at my watch a third time, waiting in the station for the bus" I will have reached perfect synchronicity. Small town, big feelings.
"He piloted this song in a plane like that one She is selling faith on the Go Tell Crusade" ...WOW I've loved this song and the whole Fabels....album since it came out . But I love it even more since I covered it and really looked at the lyrics
Love all of it. Great song by REM. Great band. Love Jason Isbell. Filming is great for once! Interesting to watch the same performance from someone filming in the audience in another video (on RUclips) while people are talking! Now I get to see it up close!
Fun. Album Tomorrow! And what a great story behind it. I Really want to hear Julien Baker and Brandi Carlile do indigo girls. Its gotta be really good and I want to hear it
Murmur came out when was in the eighth grade and I heard this song at my friends house when his father was setting up his new stereo. I was completely hooked. Poor guy, I must have made him play the album three times. It was the first cd I ever saw or heard, first nice stereo, remember it like it was yesterday. Don’t remember my first kiss though, think it was Dixie Evans but not sure.
I don't think so. When I saw them night 1 of Shoals Fest she was with them for the show but she left the stage for 4-5 songs in the middle of the set and that was when they did this and the Drivin n Cryin cover
Do you drive? Do you use your brakes? Should other drivers use their brakes? Masks & vaccines are brakes. They protect you and others. Is there any question about what we should do when someone doesn't use their brakes?
@@edrhodes574 My choice is to not get vaxxed. My neighbour and friend died of a heart attack 2 weeks after his vaccine, my partner's colleague the same, my friend's daughter in her 30s is physically debilitated after her jabs and several friends have has very bad reactions. I agree with the use of masks. My wife has had covid and she's now fine. I look after myself and rarely get a cold. I eat well with a mostly veg diet. I believe everyone would be better off if we cut down our animal products and bought less shit, but I'm not gonna force it on you, it's your choice to make. Most people who are vaxxed are walking around still taking chances, unmasked in shops because they're now invulnerable. I refuse.
I was a fan of Jason until I bought tickets to a show(I’ve been to many) and then learning that if I’m not vaccinated I can’t go because he won’t allow it. He fights against discrimination and then discriminates. I don’t see him banning obese people for being unhealthy which is the number 1 reason why so many have perished. If you’re against discriminating then good but you can’t just not be about it when you want to. Very hypocritical. What’s next? If you’ve had an abortion you aren’t gonna be allowed to go to some other artists concert that doesn’t believe in that? Why am I being punished for being healthy when the people who are the problem with covid are people who are very unhealthy. If we didn’t have a obesity problem in the United States we would’ve never had a covid problem. But I’m the one who gets punished.
I was a fan until you turned political. You shoulda left your leftism in your guitar case. You turned off a big part of your base, but I guess it makes you feel clean and good.
It probably does make him feel clean and good. The party of voter suppression and punishing the poor, which is most people if you you lose a paycheck or two, is a cruel party on a good day and has lately become twisted into a death cult. I don’t think Jason has trouble selling out shows and probably sleeps well at night too.

My favorite REM song. I thought I would balk at someone covering it, but leave it to Isbell to nail it the same way he does everything.
Michael Stipe should be honored. What a great cover!!
Indeed he is!
Heard lyrics I’ve never heard or have forgotten. Super
Thanks REM for such an amazing song ! Thanks Jason for bringing it back around 💥💥💥

Jason's heartfelt cover of this classic tune from waaaay back is indicative of the kind of artist he is.
This was badass!! I loved it. Jason Isbell is becoming one of my favorite country singers.
He’s kinda not really country🤷♂️
Brilliant and I thought a perfect tribute to the band from Athens. The more I get to hear and see, the bigger fan I become. Thank You.
Brilliant i have Pre-ordered Georgia Blue here in Scotland .
You don’t need a lyric sheet to understand every word. That’s good!
LOL, I never knew what the words were till now.
Jimbo’s bass tone in perfect. The pick is a great sound for this.

love this version and love how it came about and love how i can actually understand the words!
Oh, so that's what Stipe was singing...
I want to personally thank Stacy Abrams for her hard work in GA and this resulting album!!!
OMG,. This is so good. This has always been one of my favorite songs. Jason hit this out of the park.
❤❤❤❤can't wait to see you and Amanda! Awesome..love your voice..T A L E N T E D!!!❤😍
Amazing! Glad to be there to witness!
Me too! That was a great show!
So good. And Jimbo gets bonus points for having to play it in F#m instead of Em :)
One of my favorite songs, you nailed it Jason!
Love it! Needs a Rickenbacker though!
Love the playing and the tone on that bass.
great version of my favorite REM tune....now i have a little insight to the lyrics and what michael was singing! fantastic!!
I'm a retired bass player of over 35 years, and I love the bass tone and arrangement for this cover. Well done overall.
Thank you Jason from this Georgia voter!
Love that you covered this in REM's home town. Would have loved it even more it if it had been electric.
Saw them twice the last 2 months. The first show they did it acoustic and it was fine. The second show they did it electric and it kicked fucking ass
What a treat to wake up to this! 🎶🎶
Another fabulous REM cover!
Love how Jason can take a cover and make it his own. Awesome. ✌😎🎶🎸
Sounds and looks amazing! Loved it!
Twas even better seeing it in person!
Thanks for this!
First time I've this song where I could understand the words .rem mumble through the whole song this cover is great nice to hear the for change
I read the lyrics as a teenager when it came out. Pretty easy to understand if you know the words.
WARNING! Listening to this song may be hazardous to you mental health! It may play over and over inside your head after you've finished hearing it!!
Great try and performance! Greetings from a big REM fan !
On of my favorite moments of the show - Durham NC 11/26/21
I was there too! Memory still burns bright🤙🤙
Fun. Album Tomorrow! And what a great story behind it.

This is a fantastic cover.
Can't wait to see
Im having back in the morning so I'll have to catch this later.

I was at the show! I was that one sad sack who was yelling for TVA 😂
I heard you! I was yelling for Danko/Manuel lol

Hate I have to miss you in Nashville Sunday 😭

Driver 8 was on Fables.
Does anyone know if there is a show where Amanda was with the band and they did driver 8? Her accompanying vocals would be awesome!
I don't think so. When I saw them night 1 of Shoals Fest she was with them for the show but she left the stage for 4-5 songs in the middle of the set and that was when they did this and the Drivin n Cryin cover
Rock out
praise dale
Way to "Play a Train Song"
Fucking amazing
Jason said he has a rule not to cover a band’s song when he’s in their hometown, looks like he had to break that rule in Athens… not that we mind ...
❤❤
I miss REM
How do you choose a favorite song by either of these artists?
When & where is Jason isbell & the 400 unit playin next?....I’d love to go check them out
look at the top

Great cover but I think it works better with Sadler on the 12 string as opposed to the acoustic.
Great stuff Jason. Not quite as good as REM though. Jason is immensely talented 👏
What a douchey backhanded compliment. Oh really? It’s not as good as the original? How very perceptive.
Morgan Wallen is awesome and I bet he can do this song much more justice.
So your the guy cutting on Morgan, wow, just wow…. Lol
Wish the audio were live. It appears to be lip synced.
Love this cover and love his music, but I wouldn't spend a nickel on 'Georgia Blue', knowing where the money is going. Nope. No thank you, sir!
Agreed, my friend.
Thanks for clueing us in on you both being assholes
@@TR-yi8up It's you pal. You have lost it.
This version is a bit rushed I thought.
Which is how to do it in a live set
@@tommyhaynes9157 I disagree.
can i listen if im not vaxxed Jason...?
Get vaxxed

What a dead crowd
Horrible job here
His worst album ever. What happened to him? Is he more concerned about getting in good with the Martha's Vineyard crowd than making good music again?

Isbell is wonderful, but not at train songs. This seems forced. Meh.
Sorry Jason... You sang it wrong.
