This is why I watch beginner videos despite having played drums for some ten years. I am self taught, so I look for basic things I never learned, and today I learned why the hi-hat is tilted.
Feel this. Oh man more so with guitar but I'm just really getting into drums now after playing casually for a number of years! The feeling of. Wow. This was so simple. Hahahaha😊
To be fair, everything is out here online for everyone now. A lot of these videos weren’t even here 10 years ago. I’ve already watched this video, but my first hi-hat finally came in last week lol
As a drummer over 40 years, nobody can't imagine how difficult this is for me. Always used the hi-hat otherwise than on two and four. I'm crazy mad I feel like a big fool, my level is far under a beginner, while my mistakes are like burned in deeply. BUT, I'm starting now and keep on practicing. Thank you Rob, and greetings from the Netherlands. 🤘
Same. On and off drummer for 40 years! I never really incorporated the left foot like this other than half assed 2 & 4; and not well either. He has another hi hat foot video that is also fantastic. I’m getting there and my basic grooves sound so much fuller. All my favorite drummers have this totally dialed - Jimmy Chamberlain as an example.
@@iCameForFlesh666 I play metal too, and I'm actually surprised at how many songs that I can play without using the hi-hat pedal at all - not very common in the genre I guess. It's why I never learned how to use it, but can still cover a lot of difficult songs by Megadeth and Metallica already lol. I feel like using the hi-hat pedal is the only thing I can't figure out how to self teach.
Thanks Rob I’ve been playing for 55 years started at 13 68 now I have not played in a few years just jam once a blue moon, these lessons are getting me back in shape. I am self taught, you are making it easy especially with your teaching it’s very understandable! Ty my Friend 🥁🎶
My left foot said "SHUT UP AND LEAVE ME ALONE" Her words- not mine. BTW I am your newest subscriber. I am sad I have not found you until now. You are a great teacher.
L.A DiNiro I am in the same situation. This video and Robs lessons are awesome and will help me & others break through things we either didn't work on when we were starting out or are just learning drums. Double bass is a huge foundation for my playing style using my feet similar to my hands. Heel toe has really put my style ahead of the competition but knowing how to incorporate the hhat is going to send me to the next level for sure. Thanks Mr Rob for these awesomely taught videos.
This is a great lesson. Been playing for decades at home but never used the hi hat foot. Its like starting all over again now but i love it. Thanks so much for this Rob...
It's funny because the drum is pretty much the only instrument you can do this with. Imagine playing the guitar for over 30 years and never using one of the strings on it or something 😆 Not possible.
A couple weeks eh? I think you might be right. K H S H. Looks so easy when YOU do it. As a life long guitar player, I just started playing drums...maybe a month now. Up until 2 days ago when I started doing this exercise, i was thinking double stroke rolls are the hardest thing for me to do right now. No Sir...It's this exercise. Thanks for the great videos. I've pretty much unsubscribed to all the other drum teachers. You're very thoughtful, straight forward and easy to understand. Thank you for doing what you do.
thanks so much from a beginner ! I started one year ago, being 64 years old. Crazy, maybe, but never had so much fun before in my life. I live in Paraguay, where it is hard to find professional teachers, who are patient enough with an older lady, smile ... seeing your footwork now, base drum and hi-hat, you left me dumbfounded but eager to get this. I may need more time than the Youngsters, but your explanations are great. Thanks a lot, gracias y saludados ... Gabriele
I was looking around RUclips 3 months ago looking to get my left foot going and settled on this as well as the second in this series and I can honestly say it was the most my playing has improved. Rob Brown, thanks so much love your playing.
9:00 ohh man ive done this but with my right foot, to do it with my left foot is unlocking me as a drummer, i cannot wait to practice these exercises ! thankyou !
Cool, you have joined the drumming world. Cheers. You may also enjoy - rdavidr - A RUclips channel about all things, drums. It's fascinating and his delivery is to the point.
I’m a returning drummer, having played semi-professionally to an advanced-intermediate level (being honest, I’ve never been professional/session ability). I went back to education had to sell my gear and now have a young family I have recently been in a position to buy a kit and get back to playing after a 12 year hiatus. I’m now relearning my muscle memory and learning things I should have learnt properly back in the day. Your tuition videos are great dude, proper grass roots skills that I can see will give a fantastic foundation from which to build. Keep them coming matey and thank you! 🤘
This video eased my woes. Driving in the car and limiting myself to only using my off foot for the bass drum tapping while I drive means im just over thinking it. I’ve played for 20 years now and never really thought to use the hi hat pedal in a groove, and have only really ever messed with it when I have to learn it for a song.
Play along with Rob. Get that muscle memory happening and may the groove be with you. It's nice to play along with all the pure backing tracks available on youtube once you have your brain and physical body in sync. Another cool video. The drum mics sound great with nice resonance from the snare BTW. 5 years after this was made I revisited the video just to think about the fundamentals and maintain an enquiring mind that wants to always learn and relearn as a drummer. Can't stop learning... and relearning your chops.
Platinum quality lesson for beginners. Man, it's weird that I can almost feel my nervous system and the dank dark fat, deep in my brain actually re-wiring itself while practicing. Thanks, Rob! Gonna..."chew on this awhile!"
Damn when he talked about the angle of the lower hat and said that if they are even you're just going to create an "air pocket" man I felt that. You're a great teacher.
Rob gives some tough love, yet is sympathetic! You have a great way of translating and breaking this down to be understandable.. Thanks so much for teaching - I feel I learn a lot watching your videos :-)
Great and informative bid as usual Rob. Would like to also add that the tilter screw, while helping to eliminate that choked, air pocket thing from happening, also has a very important function as it is what enables the wash of the top and bottom cymbals interacting. No bottom cymbal angle, no hi-hat splash.
New subscriber here because you hit the nail on the head of how I need instruction... to the point, examples, and just plain real! I have always been a double base metal drummer and played for years... just now getting into stuff that has hi hats and my left foot is freaking out! Thank you!
Right leg brain. Left leg brain. Work separate and together. Well... My left leg I think is brain dead. Thanks for the info. I think your lesson is one of the best I've seen. Hopefully the left leg brain will awaken. Yes I'm new to drums. 57 years old, just bought my first kit 2 months ago.
I grew up playing A LOT of double bass. This is the one thing I never learned how to do and it haunts me...keep time with the hats during single bass moments of the song. Thank you for posting this man... I really appreciate it.
I'm learning on a Yamaha DD65. I purchased Yamaha kick pedal and tower along with Yamaha hi-hat pedal. When learn all the fundamentals I'll upgrade to a full set. These lesson are helping me a lot. I also have a real practice pad ! I ain't playing with this. lol THANX BRO. !
Just wanted to thank you for your time and explanations. Brand new drummer here. Who had no idea what that darn screw was for. Now I do! Lol. Your videos are a great resource. And I'm glad it came across them. Thanks again!
As a guitar player learning drums, this is how I need it broken down. Thank you! And the high hat adjustment... why have none of my drummer friends clued me in on that one?
Thanks for the tips Mr. Brown! Now i can get my left foot involved instead of it just sitting on the hi hat as it has the last two months. I am doing the drumeo method but that foot has been planted firmly and i am starting to freak out as i know all sorts of crap with my other limbs but the left foot just sits there.
I find that the left foot is the most neglected limb by self-taught drummers. Working through Gary Chester’s book, “New Breed, helped me develop my hi-hat independence, although I don’t believe one needs to do that. Whenever playing on the ride cymbal, I think it’s important to be able to play any groove, either playing the hi-hat on the down beats (1-2-3-4) or the upbeats (the “and” beats).
Hey man, thanks for the vids. These are super inspirational to this recovering semi-pro. Just a thought on "independence". Now I remember a quote by Art Blakey stating that your 'left hand shouldn't know what your right hand is doing.' But the feeling I have is that it is all 'interdependent', co-related, and integrated...not to challenge what the master stated...BUT are we not integrating the entire body, like dance? If my hi-hat is keeping the quarters or subdivisions everything else, I feel, is anchored to that, related to that. I know that word has been thrown around us for decades but it may be outdated. Independent - not dependent on another...yet everything I play is stemming from everything else I play or choose to not play. With love and respect - Paul
Hey Rob, just stumbled upon your videos. I wish I had found them when I first started, could have saved myself a lot of frustration and money. While it wasn't money wasted, however; this would have helped me achieve some of my goals faster. I took some time off from drumming, just to get my head clear, and going to start with your videos to help me again start off on a firm foundation. Thanks Harold

Hi Rob, Thank you for the very helpful videos! I am a visual learner, so this is super helpful. Wondering if you would be willing to go over how to set up the hi hat with regards to all aspects of the hi hat setup such as height compared to snare, space between cymbals, tilt of the bottom cymbal, foot pedal tension and then foot technique. I know it is a lot but I, as a beginning drummer am struggling a bit with that.
I would like to see how you use your foot. Do you leave your heel grounded, rock your foot or what? Been playing most of my life (67 yrs old) and I always used my HH on 2 and 4. Your method doubles the action. My leg muscles aren't what they used to be. This will take a lot of practice just to build that leg muscle. I always appreciate your lessons, keep them coming, thanks.
Thanks for that. I appreciate how you explain and keep focus on the topic without throwing in a bunch of other stuff. Plus you obviously have restraint and control in your paying too. That's so important. And no closeups of ankle socks. HAHa. :)
Adding any kind of left foot pattern into a groove just sends things off the rails in a hurry. I play double bass pretty well but playing the hihat pedal or just keeping simple time with it always throws me off badly. I feel like my hands and right foot are fairly independent but my left foot needs a ton of work. Thanks for this.
Yeah Man. Very good lesson and great topic most don't cover. Super helpful. Been a sticking point for me and was able to do it with your first lesson. Thanks and you da man!
El Joelo independently keeping time with the left foot is a huge obstacle for a lot of drummers but the earlier you practice and develop your left foot independence the more you’ll thank yourself later
sorry, I'm a little confused about the excericise you start at the 9:00 mark. To me, it sounds like you're playing the bass drum on the and of 1, and the "and of 3.
Rob when I count this it looks to me like you are playing the HH on the & of every beat. The second example the kick is on the & of 1 and the & of 3. The third the kick is on 2 and 4. The fourth the kick is on & of 2 and the & of 4. Is that correct?
you're right. I got a bit confused by the way he called the timing 1,2,3,4, and also 1&,2&, etc. counting in 1&, 2&, he is hitting the high hat on the &s and the kick is as you asked.
I’ve started to count with the left foot over everything that im playing, its improved my timing massively and im getting better at it quite quickly. One thing that’s difficult though is half open hi hat. I bounce my heel when im playing it closed, and i move it back for an open hi hat, but its really hard working out what to do with a crispy half open hi hat, any advice?
Love the way you silence you cymbal...that says something about how you see the sounds you produce...with value and respect :) . Respect for you, sir! Needless to say I've subscribed.
Hey, I just finished working this exercise and am ready for part 2, now. It really seems to be helping! Thanks for this series! Now if I can just figure out how not to wobble side to side while playing it. Lol! Subscribed.

Hey, I've been drumming for 5 but do not play like it. I get it man, I'm super embarrassed too - 40 is much longer tho so I'm sorry if this is naïve.

Thank God i found it
Exactly the same with my left foot. It refused to play along...
I've learnt more from you in 10 minutes than a 6 week drum lesson 'course'. I've improved greatly thanks to you. Keep doing what you are doing GB
Best left foot tutorial on you tube for beginners. Looks easy till you sit down the wtf moment happens. Practice practice practice
THANK YOU ! litterally nobody talks about this ..

I simply tried this once, and unlocked more limbo dependence.
I swear the old videos or new videos doesn’t matter, always a hit !
Best communicator in the drum tutorial world. The only subscription I need anymore!
Air pocket? I'm pretty sure bottom hat is angled so the hats dont ring out after you step and release.

Awesome. Never actually been a drummer, but: I have sat next to them! This takes the Voodoo out of what they are doing.
Thanks Rob. I've tried doing exercises to work on my hi hat but it just sounds like noise. Thanks for the guidance.
Thanks for the tip, every time I try to use my left foot it feels like everything else shuts down.
First beat I’ve been able to make sense of on my left foot. Thank you for this!
I’m not sure if I’m a beginner, intermediate or somewhere in between? I don’t have any aspirations to be in a band, just played sporadically as a hobby for years. I really enjoy it but I’ve always felt inadequate re the left leg which I rarely use…. Until now! Thanks so much for this exercise! Ps. Just bought some merch as a token of thanks
Rob is awesome.
Using the left foot is tough when you start adding a double base beat. One to one is ok but that double base beat w a very active left foot is tricky.
Yes the left foot is the time keeper for the band and helps you notice if you are speeding up
This is one of the things I've never bothered learning cuz I always played with a slighty cracked hi hat for that heavier sound.
Mad respect man!! And straight edge teaching on the real.
Great, great lesson Rob. Going to take some time to figure this one out.
Great instruction. I will try these. My left foot is basically like a brick on the pedal lol!
Hi Rob,
Thank you for the very helpful videos! I am a visual learner, so this is super helpful.
Wondering if you would be willing to go over how to set up the hi hat with regards to all aspects of the hi hat setup such as height compared to snare, space between cymbals, tilt of the bottom cymbal, foot pedal tension and then foot technique. I know it is a lot but I, as a beginning drummer am struggling a bit with that.
decided to take this up after binging some meshuggah drum videos, the way he does it is so satisfying
omg @10:15 two AND is so funky I love that! Also thanks for all your videos! FYI you just got another student
I would like to see how you use your foot. Do you leave your heel grounded, rock your foot or what? Been playing most of my life (67 yrs old) and I always used my HH on 2 and 4. You are great teacher. YOur channel is great and I dig YOur humor .
thank you very much mate you’re such a good teacher you’re the best drum teacher i’ve ever seen so far, can you please teach us how to do “Ghost Note”
Thanks a lot, man. I do have an older video somewhere on ghost notes but I think you just reminded me that I should probably do an updated one 🤔

you're right. I got a bit confused by the way he called the timing 1,2,3,4, and also 1&,2&, etc.
counting in 1&, 2&, he is hitting the high hat on the &s and the kick is as you asked.
Yes yes! I just tuned in tonite and thought I was losing it!
Hi hat on the "&"
Cant wait to try it
Thank Rob!
Thank guys
Is that a one drop groove, used in reggae to have the kick on the back beat with the snare
I'm looking for this. Finally I got one. Thanks!
Lol! Subscribed.
