Monoprice Delta Mini 3D Printer Review- It's an Odd One...

  • I’ve had the Monoprice Delta Mini 3D Printer for a month now, and in that time I’ve come to understand a few things about this very INTERESTING printer.
    First and foremost, for the price, this printer is absolutely worth buying. However, I would not recommend it as a first printer since it definitely has a few quirks.
    The print quality is awesome and it’s a great introduction to delta style printing, but you’ll likely have to make some adjustments to get it calibrated properly. There are also just a few odd design choices (i.e. no power switch?!).
    Check out this review, let me know what you think, and feel free to leave any questions or comments down below. And as always, don’t forget to subscribe to The Enthusiasm Project for new videos and live streams every week!

      as a bieginner I was totally confused on what bed temps are and how they affect print quality, bed adhesion (or lack thereof)had me almost ready to send it back. A basic guide to what all that stuff is, and how it affects print quality, time etc would be good. Save folks from learning the hard way

    I have one of these printers; thumbs up for an accurate and well-done review. I too am impressed with the speed and resolution this little printer can put out.
    For anyone getting one of these, check out the tuning guide on the "MP Mini Delta Owners" facebook group, specifically the posts by Dennis Brown. He walks through re-calibrating the printer for dimensional accuracy and better first layers.

      utahgamer and everyone, I hear everyone say "checkout the Facebook group"for different printers. Is it the same experience on Facebook for folks like me who DO NOT have a Facebook account? So far my experience is looking for advice on a particular function or feature for a printer (monoprice select plus) but the Facebook group seems to be more of a linear collection of posts and I don't understand how to search and find info for a specific topic. Is it always just ask and wait and see if someone replies? Thanks for any tips! Jim

      Or for those of us that simply refuse to use FB. One of the things that I look for before buying a new printer is if it has forum support, and how active that group is. Rostock is great, and that's about the only one that I frequent (but deltas are weird, and you'll need all of the help that you can get). FLSun is horrible, just getting the darn thing built earns you a merit badge or two...

    I had a few fails with the monoprice mini v2 and realized very quickly that I needed to level each corner 2 to 3 times till it was fully level. I would level them all then go back to the first corner and it was out. so keep levelling until until you no longer need to adjust. I live in canada and have a cold basement. so I leveled it with the paper being pretty tight to the extruder (printer and bed cool quickly) and printed a file with a good "brim" plate in CURA. If your not using CURA use it. it has a setting for the monoprice mini v2 and all other printers. if you in a warm climate all good if your room is cold turn up the extruder and plate temp by 5 or 10 to get good adhesion on the base plate.

    Just a heads up, I'd plug the barrel jack in first, before plugging it in to the wall. Quite a few people (myself included) have had it spark when plugging the barrel jack in last.
    Also on the topic of power, if you search "power switch" on the Facebook Group, some people have linked to switches that just plug in between the brick and the cord.
    Or you can just get a cheap smart-outlet, so you can control it with your phone. That's what I ended up doing.

    Great video. I'm planning on making a review myself. I was an early adopter and received one of the first 500. One note on your talking points: G29 is NOT Z height. It is the auto leveling command. This of course can be modified with further gcode commands to account for a z offset after homing.

    I just got mine delivered and printing today. It was an $89 open box deal. The surface finish on printed parts is excellent. I need to tune the retraction and speed settings to cut down on stringing. I've noticed that the bed temperature goes back down to about 35 when the hot end is heating. The bed probably needs to be brought to 35, then the hot end up to printing temperature, then the bed up to 50 after that.

    the problem with the heating time is the same as with the mini select you have a 7 amp power supply witch limits one or the other 7 amps is not enough power to prime both bed and hot end that's why they switch back to back

    I have one of these printers and my teacher has two, there is a pro you missed and that is durability. My teacher has dropped them a couple times and they're perfectly fine.
    A con you missed is that the filament hook doesn't have a high enough wall and you have to make sure the filament spool doesn't fall off when carrying it.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  5 лет назад

      I have t had any issues with the filament falling off (although I guess it’s be pretty easy to print a new hook), and fortunately I haven’t had to test the drop durability, but those are two good points to consider before purchasing. Thanks for the info!

I was able to run the PID auto tune g command and it fixed it! Not sure why it started out okay, but the numbers for the PID definitely fixed my temp stability issue. Jim

    • @tombuck

      Hmm, how curious...
      I’m glad there’s a possible solution!

    • @MrWaalkman
      @MrWaalkman 6 лет назад +1

      I'm a controls engineer by day, and when a PID loop gets out of whack on us we *always* look for something that has come loose. Trust me, it didn't just happen.
      There are only a handful of parts to worry about when it comes to these printers, the heating element (the bed or nozzle cartridge), and the thermistor. So for the bed or nozzle check that your connections are tight, that there is no evidence of heat-related damage. And in the case of the nozzle, that it hasn't come loose from the block. Make sure that your thermistor is making good contact with the bed or block (for the hotend blocks, I use the screw in thermistors). Just be sure to treat them with kid gloves, they break very easily. And finally, check the power supply to make sure that it isn't fluctuating on you.

    Tom, someone in the comments asked for a side by side comparison of the delta and the mini. I would second that request. I'm really interested in a speed comparison. I know a lot of printer gurus will say I always print slow to improve quality and insure successful prints, but I often print samples or size test prints of a partial print to check the scale before I commit to the entire print, so there is often no need to produce a perfect smooth part if I'm only interested in the size from a calibration point of view. Once I know the size it right I do slow down to a more practical speed. Thanks for the review! I may have to order one of these. QUESTION: do you get any real kickback from Amazon on the affiliate link? Is that a forever thing since it was probably months ago when you set that up? If I order I will definitely go thru your link! Thanks again!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 лет назад

      The Delta is definitely faster, but I’ll do a comparison just so we can see by exactly how much (sometime in the next few weeks I hope...).
      I actually only recently set up the Amazon links. I don’t know what the percentage is, but I get some portion of the purchase. It doesn’t matter which link you use really, as long as you click through one of them it’ll count regardless of what you order. Every little bit helps!

    What do you usually set your G29 to? I usually have mine to the set mine to G29 Z0.4 and have had reasonably consistent 1st level layers. *I have had to make sure that there is not any old filament from the last time the printer leveled so that the level is set correctly.
    Also, an enclosure could be attached to the printer via the metal screws that help hold the metal covering together, this would help with keeping a constant temp. on the build plate and the nozzle. I have noticed that since doing this the internal temp stays consistent and the prints haven't warped off the plate due to fluctuating plate temps.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 лет назад +1

      Lately I’ve been setting G29 to Z0.2 and using rafts. I didn’t specifically mention my settings in the video since it will likely be different on each printer. I’m going to give yours a shot though and see the results.
      And I love the idea of an enclosure, this is a great design to easily add one!

    The WiFi on the Monoprice mini printers does us the SD card. You transfer files to the printer over wifi, it's stored on the SD card under a different name cache.gcode or something similar. There is absolutely no reason to fear it. It's not any more "reliable", and you're missing out on remote management.

      I haven't used the Creality Ender 3, but it's under $200 and seems to have almost universally positive reviews, so that could be another great choice for a first printer.
      And really, the Delta Mini is a great printer for anyone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty and learning a bit about how to tinker with it to get the best results (for a lot of people that can actually be half the fun).

    i‘m in the decision, ProFab Select Mini+ or the Delta. The only criteria is print surface quality. Speed and Noise doesn‘t matter. A criteria is to print a part, add electronics and continue to close the case. I do not print that’s much.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 лет назад

      I think the surface quality of the Delta’s prints is probably a bit higher than the Mini+, but the build area is VERY small. I think you could dial in settings on the Mini+ and it may be a bit more practical. Just my .02

      The Mini Delta does have a built in web server. Once you have setup the printer with the WiFi SSID and password, its address shows up on the display when the printer is NOT plugged in to USB. Type the address into your web browser to connect. A simple way to setup WiFi is to put the two lines of code at the beginning of a model you are printing (or use some other way of sending g-code to the printer). This only has to run once to tell the printer how to connect.:
      M550 SSID ; your WiFi network's name
      M551 PASSWORD ; your WiFi network password
      Two lines of code. That's the entire setup process.

    I'm having the same problem that you mentioned with the Z-Axis starting too low on prints. What G29 setting did you end up with?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 лет назад

      Hey Leo! There are two parts to this answer:
      1:The original setting came from the MP Delta profile I downloaded from mpminidelta.com. Then I adjusted it based on what I observed, and ended up with the following for G29: C-0.8 Z0.2 ; probe the bed at 3 points with a 0.8mm overall vertical offset and an additional -0.8mm center offset
      2. Another user, UCANTESCAPE1992, said this in another comment: "G29 is NOT Z height. It is the auto leveling command. This of course can be modified with further gcode commands to account for a z offset after homing."
      Wow, that was a complicated answer...

    • @Dungeonstone
      @Dungeonstone 6 лет назад +1

      Well, I've tried several variations on the G29 Z setting in the start Gcode and all of them seem to just end up with the extruder jammed down into the print bed.
      Now here is the weird part.
      If I tell the printer to print the "cat" file from the SD card which came with the printer then .. no problems.. I get a decent cat.
      However, If I copy the start Gcode G29 line from the "cat" file (G29 C-0.8 Z0.3) over into my Cura profile for the Mini Delta and slice a model (one from an STL file that I have sliced/printed before in Cura for other machines and know works), then it just goes right back to grinding the extruder into the print bed.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 лет назад

      Yes! This is essentially the same issue I have. When the nozzle grinds into the bed, the print usually does turn out fine, but it really doesn’t seem right. I’ve been using Simplify 3D.

    • @Dungeonstone
      @Dungeonstone 6 лет назад

      When it happens to me the grinding is far too severe. Nothing comes out for several layers and the print is a total failure every time. I'm going to try creating a clean profile for the printer in Cura, slicing my file again and this time do a line by line comparison to the "cat" file MP sent out with the printer to see if there is anything obvious.

    • @Dungeonstone
      @Dungeonstone 6 лет назад +1

      Re-installed the Cura profile and copied most of the start code from the cat file over onto what Cura sliced my model to.
      Actually worked... mostly. Extruder is still just a bit too low but at least I got a successful print. Will alter the G29 line to "G29 C-0.8 Z0.4" and see what that does for it.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 лет назад

      Hey Parker! The diameter of the bed is really quite small. It's pretty tall though, so if you're printing tall, skinny models, it could do quite well. If you've got experience printing, then I think this is definitely a fun printer to experiment with.
      Otherwise, in that price range I'd recommend the good ole Monoprice Maker Select Mini. It's reliable, high quality, and has a slightly larger print size. But if you truly want to try something MASSIVE, the Creality CR-10 is super popular. I haven't used that one myself, but everyone who has seems to love it. I think it usually runs about $300.

    My best advice for the noise is to get a clear tub and put it over the darn thing when it's printing. This will have the added effect of improving your print quality.
    And you need to tune your PIDs, 10 degrees of temperature swing is going to cause print problems. As for the variable heat up times, I would be placing a call to MP to see what they have to say, but until then keep it as a "day" printer until you are comfortable with it being safe to run at night (I do this with all of my new printers, so it's not a MP thing).
    And I use a 13.2 volt Ham radio power supply on my Rostock, this helps speed up bed heating by quite a bit.
    I would be curious to see how accurate your prints are. One of the issues with delta printers is that it's not uncommon for X and Y to get out of whack. For example, with my old 3d printed platform on my Rostock, an L-shaped calibration block would be 10mm at the center, and 9.8mm at the end of one side, and 10.2mm at the end of the other side. Upgrading the platform, arms, and the carriages got most of this fixed, but IMHO, deltas are great for printing "thingies", and not so great if you expect your parts to fit together.

      Wow, thank you for all this awesome info! I’m going to give the “hack” a try, and then I’ll also test out the accuracy again. I’d also like to get a new power supply to see if that makes things more consistent. Really, thank you for taking the time to share all of this.

      You find/adjust the starting Goode in the slicing program (Cura, ideamaker, Craftware or S3d)

      That’s interesting. I know MP mostly rebrands existing printers. Mine was one of the earlier ones, so maybe they did improve them.

      Hmm, I don’t have experience with those ones, so I can’t say unfortunately. This is the only Delta printer I’ve personally used. The end results are usually quite good, it’s just getting there that can be tricky.

    On a scale of 1-10 how noisy is it

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 года назад

      I would rate it about a 6 or 6.5. It's not the loudest printer in the world, but it's nowhere near as silent as something like the Prusa Mini.

    This printer is full trash, as a beginner doesn't know how to edit Gcode, I can only wait and see it printing silk like filaments doesn't stick on the bed, just keep jaming the nozzle.
    Returned it to Amazon and waiting for a refund to buy Ender 3.
    If Monoprice don't refund me I will never buy anything from them again.

      The Enthusiasm Project I found a guy on Reddit saying the MP Mini 3D V2 is just about always preferable to the Mini Delta due to the Mini Delta's inconsistency between prints resulting in parts not fitting together, when the MP Mini 3D V2 is only a little bit more money for a huge jump in quality. Any thoughts on that?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 лет назад

      I’d have to agree. As cool as the Delta is, the regular mini is a much more practical and reliable printer.

    Hey Tom, I saw one of your issues with this printer is the lack of a power switch. Some reviews on this inline power switch indicate that others have used it for this printer amzn.to/2wj0yXM Have you done any significant modding to any of your printers? I'm interested in modding and think it might be a cool video, like a top 5 mods or something like that.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 лет назад

      Ahh cool, thanks for that link! Seems like a perfect solution.
      I haven’t really done any mods other than the glass beds. I did just replace the entire hot end on my Prusa, which was quite a learning experience, but that was more of a maintenance issue.
      I like your idea of a mod video though...
