This was my first printer, it's been serving me well for 2 years. The small size was great for the limited space I have, and besides the over sensitive jog wheel, I've had no issue with it. Easy to set up and reliable.
Have your prints stayed intact? Do any of them suffer from stress or shear along layers? What would you say are best practices for printing the most rugged piece?
8:48 You should always level when everything is heated up to the same temperature you are printing with. The bed and nozzle warp with heat, so the distance you set while cold will change once the printer heats up. Also, once you have used the printer for a few times, solidified residues of plastic on the nozzle can throw off your levelling accuracy, unless you heat it up before levelling.
Where were you 2 years ago when I struggled with my Ender printer? I bet this was the cause of a lot of my grief. It makes perfect sense and should have been obvious to me. Thanks!
Chep did an experiment on Friday to evaluate the heating of the bed and nozzle before tramming the bed and came up with the conclusion that the expansion is negligible and not required
@@ExplainingComputers A small note about the four screw print bed: You only need to adjust three of them to define a surface. The print bed is over constrained with four points in space. No clue why printers still come with four screws these days. You can sort of work around by just ignoring e.g. the back left one and only adjust with the other ones. This way setup is far easier, but still not perfect as the one ignored still pulls/pushes the corner.

But you cannot ignore any of the screws -- the bed does not just need to be level (as in flat relative to the print mechanism), but at the right height (level). So if the corner you ignore is at the wrong level, there is a problem. You could only ignore one point if it were always at the right height! :)
I've been waiting years for a cheap and reliable model for home use that many of us will barely give it. It is a piece of simple technology, but at the same time science fiction from our childhood. very excited to see that we are getting closer to seeing them in each house.

That included not just setting expectations for the uninitiated, but also detailed potential weaknesses of the specific machine. I have not yet made the leap to purchasing a 3D printer for my home, despite having years of work-related experience. Perhaps, more accurately, I'm hesitant exactly because of seeing the limitations of even professional grade 3D printers and their printed objects. I hope that you will explore the use cases for such a machine for a variety of your viewers, handyman, hobbist, and other non-youtube-creators. Hint; I don't need (any more) cartoon animals. How about replacing a broken laptop case, kitchen appliance part, dryer door latch, ...?
I suggest you just take the plunge. Going with conformity is probably the best advice for a 1st printer. I really don't think you can go wrong with the Creality Ender-3 V2. Lots of resources online should you need to reference something. Lots of supporting hardware too (p.s. I or anyone I know has no connection with Creality, but I do own two Ender 3 pro's with purchased upgrades to turn them into the 'V2' version)
I just realised. I actually own one of your books! I never really noticed you were the same person before. It was a gift from a guy I used to work with who kept a copy visible on his desk at all times.
It's also the first 3D printer I've ever owned and I absolutely love it. It's certainly not a 3D printer that 'just works' but it has all the essence of 3D printing. All the testing, failure, calibration, and problem-solving are just lots of fun. I think it's a really good 3D printer if we want to learn 3D printing in-depth.
So now you are clairvoyant - my learn something new for 2022 was ... yep 3D printing. This was the perfect introduction for me and I truly appreciate this video series and can't wait until you cover the software.

6:55 rather than a glass bed, I would recommending the upgrade to a magnetic build plate. I did this on an earlier version of this printer and it's a lot nicer to use compared to glass. also that lever of the feed mechanism may not last very long. PLA can become brittle over time and break under the stress of the spring. there are inexpensive metal versions available though.
I watch almost every video posted on this channel. The editing style and composition of the video is very structured and predictable (which is not a bad thing at all). It soothes me and I enjoy learning new things from the video. Thank you for making content palatable for people on the spectrum. 💚

Wonderful introduction to 3D printing, specifically with a "cheap" or low cost model. I keep looking at buying something but have been unsure where to start and this has really helped. Of course another problem I have is that I don't know why I want one or what I'd do with it if I got one but that's a detail I'm sure we can gloss over for now :D

Thank you, Christopher, for a report that made me virtually run out and get one of these marvels. 🙂 Bought it for € 180, added a spool of filament - it all arrived within 48 hrs. Leveling was a challenge, as the bed is anything but flat. The compromise worked though.🙄 First print with the white PLA supplied (the kittycat) worked as advertised - no issues. 👍 I got a spool of black PETG as I needed to print some outdoor resistant parts. After playing a little with Cura and the settings for the PETG filament, I could produce the feeder parts on second try! Absolutely amazing. 🙂👍🍀 If all it does to produce a scale model of a van roof adapter, that I can then get produced at actual size - it has paid for itself.😎 Thanks again! 🙏☺

Thanks for explaining 3-D printing workflow. Our local library had a "library of things "but, only the librarians could run the 3-D printers. Now I know what they were doing and how they could tell a 3-D print would take more than 3 hours allotment.

I know or knew nothing about 3D printing until today. The only thing I knew was that an object was built up with molten plastic and that was about it. I now know a lot more of how it is done, thank you, and I may dabble in the future with 3D printing. As you make models you have a need for one, I have to work out a reason for buying one besides wanting one.
As someone whose fingers have cleaned alot of industrial deepfryers and flat top grills, i've always used my abused fingers to clean of my hotend somewhere around 240C is when I reach for a tool.
Congratulations to your printer! I bought a Prusa mini in May 2021 and enjoy it very much. I suggest getting rid of the sd-card and get a rpi with Octoprint. This is a game changer! There are so many extremely useful plug-ins and you can transfer your gcode files directly from your slicer to your printer. Have fun!
Must admit I do love this channels music at the start and even enjoy the aqwward way he holds a shot between scenes for just a moment too long. Even the odd Stanley the knife and silly parts that don't work so beautifully which means they do.
Really cool video and the Stormtrooper helmet at the end is a good touch, nicely painted and presented. I look forward to seeing what ideas you have for your new 3D printer...fingers crossed for a fully customised SBC platform with rigging for holding a big cooling fan and other peripherals.

I've owned one of those printers and they're quite good. They were one of the best low cost printers a few years ago but others have come in around the same price....however it's pre-assembled, so no need to worry about putting it together and it does make a good portable machine.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet but I found that using Octopie 3d print server on a Raspberry Pi 3B with the printer hooked up to it using a usb cable drastically improved my prints. A side from all the extra features you get it makes accessing the printer from anywhere much easier. No extra steps of physically replacing the sd card. I also found that the layers printed much smoother and cleaner than from the SD card. I'm thinking it might have something to do with limited cache or RAM on the printer itself and that the print server basically adds resources and takes a lot of that off the printer. Either way I think it might make a good video for your channel as it overlaps Raspberry Pi and 3d Printing topics.
Another great episode. I look forward to the future videos on this subject as I am considering purchasing a 3D printer later in the year, but I am a total noob when it comes to 3D printing.

That Stormtrooper print was nice and clean but most smooth/gently contoured models tend to print well. It's the sharp corners and right angles that causes problems for extrusion 3D printing. I read and watch various things regarding 3D printing but it's not a fool proof process, nor do I have the financial outlay for another hobby like 3D printing, so I just enjoy and appreciate other peoples experiences in 3D printing. Looking forwards to various projects on here to enjoy. 🙂👍

Fun new video for a fun new toy~ Ever since I got my Elegoo mars SLA printer, my brother's had me making miniature little plastic men and parts for him. But I dont think he really understands how much preparation and post processing is involved.
This is a most excellent explanation of typical home 3D setup. I am running an Ender 3V2 pro, and while I can see that on the surface it has many more features then this mono price printer, the Mono price would make a great starter unit as it look much less complicated. I think the only thing you missed here is that lots of printers such as my Ender require you to assemble them like an erector set. This might surprise someone thinking that they could just print right out of the box like you did with your printer.
Chris, I got a Creality Ender 3 v2 about 6 weeks ago. Creality uses a version of Ultimaker. I was not impressed with it and have switched to the Prussa slicer. It is a clean efficient piece of software. Enjoy your printer, I know I have.

Also have thus printer. You can Print a replacement wheel. It ist day and night difference.

That Stormtrooper print was nice and clean but most smooth/gently contoured models tend to print well. It's the sharp corners and right angles that causes problems for extrusion 3D printing. I read and watch various things regarding 3D printing but it's not a fool proof process, nor do I have the financial outlay for another hobby like 3D printing, so I just enjoy and appreciate other peoples experiences in 3D printing. Looking forwards to various projects on here to enjoy. 🙂👍

I recently bought a monoprice cadet on sale for about 80 pounds. Great little machine prints very easily and accuratley.

I've been 3d printing since 2017 and my 3d printer has gone through many upgrades. This printer is something I might consider as it's nice and small.

Fun new video for a fun new toy~ Ever since I got my Elegoo mars SLA printer, my brother's had me making miniature little plastic men and parts for him. But I dont think he really understands how much preparation and post processing is involved.
This is a most excellent explanation of typical home 3D setup. I am running an Ender 3V2 pro, and while I can see that on the surface it has many more features then this mono price printer, the Mono price would make a great starter unit as it look much less complicated. I think the only thing you missed here is that lots of printers such as my Ender require you to assemble them like an erector set. This might surprise someone thinking that they could just print right out of the box like you did with your printer.
Had mine for a coupe of years now. Love it and managed to make some very useful projects.
Chris, I got a Creality Ender 3 v2 about 6 weeks ago. Creality uses a version of Ultimaker. I was not impressed with it and have switched to the Prussa slicer. It is a clean efficient piece of software. Enjoy your printer, I know I have.
Back in the dark ages of engineering we used cigarette papers for set up clearances.
