I absolutely adore the way you get really into it. Contrary to most "x reacts to y" videos, you're not just giving us a lecture on technique, but you're also giving us a legit, uncut, unsupressed reaction to the MUSIC you're hearing, not just on the chops you're seeing. You surely come through as someone interested in the artform, and that reflects in the quality of your content. Also, the way you demonstrate the patterns with good old body percussion gives it all an added layer of clarity and simplicity. You, sir, have my most sincere admiration for doing a technically enlightening but still joyful analysis on the work of such great musicians.
Thanks for the very kind words!
Your youthful enthusiasm and veteran knowledge is super addicting.
Thank you Sir.
This 20-year old solo just made his day a better one, and I like that
Jo Jo: making it look so pretty. Incredible independence, technique and touch. A dynamic player. One of the greatest.
This is an amazing solo. You can’t find a better one. It’s not just the crazy chops either. It is so interesting, visually entertaining, rhythmic, great cymbal sounds, dynamics, etc.. there are endless numbers of guys who have mastered every rudiment on a snare. But JoJo has taken that to unbelievable musical heights.
Jojo Mayer is INCREDIBLE!
You’re killin it on the chest set in this video. About to fly out of your seat! Great video lol
Jo-jo is one of my favorite drummers!!!!!!!!!.
This guy's technique is COMPLETELY flawless. He knows exactly where he is at ALL times. I've studied his playing for years now. When I thought I'd learned the drums, I watch him....and soon realize....I've only begun👌😊. He is a talented drummer n I love to watch him play!!👍👍👌👌. Ty Carey great vid👍
Now I want a vid of Jojo Mayer reacting to a vid of you reacting to Jojo Mayer.
And then a video of him reacting to the video of jojo reacting to the video of him reacting to jojo
To see someone of your depth have all these melting moments about Jojo is really special.
RIP. Miss you Garey!! You continue to teach the masses in a way only you could! Still one of my fav videos. Still learning!
My favorite drummer!
Please keep these videos up mate!! Such quality content and about the only thing getting me though this isolation bullsh*t 😂
You drummers have to see this guy at a venue. I seen JoJo 4 times at very small venues and is a sight to see. You can see by Garey's reaction the energy Jojo puts out.
NERVE is the only band I've seen more than 3 times. To see his drumming right in front of you at a small venue is mind blowing. Also, they have a 4th member of the band who sits boh and mixes and applies effects to each instrument (drums included) in real time to come up with some pretty otherworldly sounds. It's pretty rare to see that kind of musicianship up close.
You always bring a smile to my face, when I see you react to drummers pouring out their heart and soul on their drumsets.
The way you are doing these videos really shows your love for the art.
Would love to see you react to one of the pioneers of live d'n'b drumming, Anders Meinhardt from Denmark.
Send me a link.
Now that was FUN!...And isn't that what drumming and music is supposed to be!...Thanks again Teach!!!...Happy drumming and Happy Holidays to everyone ❤
Thank you for your videos. As a beginner in the drum world, I dont even understand what is happening in this kind of videos, its really nice to have your analysis at the same time.
Now, THIS is a reaction , love it.
Thank you so much Garey. I had only heard of Jo Jo in passing. Wow. Stunning stick work around the 17 minute mark and his brush work was wonderful.
Great video Garey. Jo Jo is awesome!
Thank you so much for explaining all of this! I finally got it all!!
most underrated youtube drum channel. Love how many insightful observations you make rather than just 'reacting'
I just saw him with Nerve at the Ardmore in Philly. Small venue. He freakin' killed it. Didn't stop for maybe 3 min total. He's this skinny little guy and he crushed it. Abe Speller and I were gob smacked,.....
Jojo is my absolute favorite. Mostly bc of how he applies what he does to his current stuff w Nerve and electronics w all the jazz feel. So sick great video here and solo!
This was excellent Garey and thank you so much for the explanation on the grip for the buzz/press roll, that really helped me for developing my buzz/press roll as I was always wondering about the gap with my happy face. Excellent coaching on this topic.
Best reaction video ever
Hi Garey!
I am really enjoying all of these great videos, especially this one!!!
They are always loaded with such a wealth of information, insight, and inspiration.
Thank you again for your contribution to the drum community and musicians in general !
great video, he is still so good
I watched two amazing Jo Jo RUclips videos yesterday. Both were educational/instructional. He’s nearly as gifted a communicator as he is a percussionist. Conveying a complex idea in a way that makes sense to an audience while still managing to keep it interesting comes with the same smoothness as his playing. One was a Ted Talk and the other was a Percussionist Clinic. I was thinking that I’d like to see you do a reaction video on him. I wake up this morning and voila!
Unbelievable ❤
I'm not a drummer but I'm really enjoying your analysis vids. Helps me understand what I'm listening to. Big fan of Louis Cole from a band called Knower. Maybe one for you to check out some time, cheers.
Thank you Garey! To me personally Jojo Mayer's playing and skills and technique are such a revelation, as is the music that he plays with his band Nerve. I am completely sold and only listen to one playlist compiled of all the Nerve albums since years! Greetings.
Start playlisting his jazz stuff! The Nerve is incredible but his accoustic jazz work gives you a great reference for what comes later.
A cool channel bro. Very thoughtful and well presented. Greetings from Dorset, UK.
Thanks and welcome
He also did some amazing jazz with Harry Sokal.
Thanks again for another great video. I'd love to see you react and comment to Clayton Cameron playing with Tony Bennett. He does a cool solo during the song "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing". It is from the unplugged performance that Tony Bennett did for MTV. Hopefully you can check it out and share your thoughts about it.
Yes! I was thinking Sonny Payne, JoJo is amazing.
jojos father is a famous doublebass player... jojo grew up with jazzmusic (btw jojos father now over 80, a very funny guy and still performing live- i saw him one year ago with bireli lagrene 🙃)
...and his sister an actress - this fam won the genetic lottery in a big way! LOL
BTW, his father got him his first drum kit at 2 years old. TWO YEARS OLD.
I’ve heard the name JoJo Mayer mentioned a million times and read interviews with him and have seen some of his Cuban type rhythmic playing BUT I had no idea that he had this kind of facility.
Shop around for his DVD's. The performances on those are amazing. Again check out his stuff with Harry Sokal. Great stuff!
Watch jo jo "developing a solo" Drummerworld vid . Or even his vic firth vid. The developing solo vid is freaking awesome. Dynamics/crazy stickings, some funky stuff!!
Yes, Jo Jo is a killer, a monster and a magician too. I saw him at the Drummer Meeting Koblenz.
He play an encore and at the end he show us his sticks between his hands, press his hands
together, the sticks disappear and he throw garlands out his right hand!
Hear also his playing with Meshell Ndegeocello: ruclips.net/video/idtkbioKcnY/видео.html
Blast beats!!!
Your ears are amazing. New subscriber
Any person that says one should always do something this way or that way is not a person to avoid learning from, but one must use discretion because there are many techniques to get different things done and some more optimal than others.
You should check out his Drum and Bass Jungle video it’s crazy
Hi Garey.. Really enjoying your videos. Seeing JoJo Mayer using brushes so beautifully, reminded me of a great Buddy Rich arrangement called "Brush Strokes" his brush playing on this is fantastic and his use of dynamics in the track is a master class..look at the absurdly simple but brilliant way he brings the band in again after his brush solo.. too cool. may I suggest this would be a great track for you to analyze? Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/D_J4iYC3QHQ/видео.html the actual track starts around 6.10 in this video. Cheers!
Thanks!
Well I just completed 1340 bpm at GC. WR will be there fee months. And i learned from JoJo. Look for new worlds record singles. Thanks jojo.
Happy Christmas Garey! All the best for the new year.
Back at you! :-)
I remember first hearing that brush section. Wow lol.
Check out butch miles with the count basie band , whirly bird video ! I find jo jo mayer impressive than tomas lang .
Been following Jo Jo for years. Jo Jo's single handed roll doesn't involve the rim. He's the only drummer I know of who does it that way. May be more, but I've never seen any.
JoJo's definitely a heavyweight
Please react to a Tommy Aldrige drum solo
Arthur Hnatek is a pretty amazing drummer if you feel so inclined to check out. Cheers
Please send me a link. Thanks!
Unreal for a guy who's self taught.
Where can I buy that chest snare lol
May I recommend Nick D’ Virgilio, such a great drummer.
Please react to Billy Cobham Tenth Pinn and Billy Cobhams' drum battle with Louis Bellson.
Send me a link. Thanks!

Waiting on a Phil Rudd reacts to ⚡️😂
MorbidManMusic You actually gave Phil Rudd 30 seconds ?! Lol. Excellent channel compadre !
I'm a guitarist but have always l loved great drummers and am really enjoying your videos :-) Please, please, please do an analysis of the great Narada Michael Walden. There are so many eras of his playing, starting with his incredible performances with the Mahavishnu Orchestra Mk 2, to his funky solo career, and all his stellar sideman work with the likes of Jeff beck. Some incredible examples include: ruclips.net/video/_GFY6pHP1IM/видео.html and
Think you'll really appreciate Allison Miller. She a fantastic composer and very inventive and highly skilled musician: ruclips.net/video/0kUyQT5Nd2E/видео.html
Is that a Jojo's reference?
And he can play all these patterns rudiments on a sheet of paper, OR A LARGE CHEESE PIZZA.
More like Go Go Mayer... Last dad joke of the year. I promise.
Your lack of subscribers is criminal
Excuse me but ....these glasses it's yours??
@MorbidManMusic ??
I couldn't watch this with the hundreds of interruptions.
MUITO TÉCNICO, MAS MUITO CHATO.
