    Mike was my drum teacher many years ago, when we lived in Boston. He's such an amazing guy, truly a top bloke as well as just an amazingly talented drummer, to the point of surreality. The way he mentally and physically understands the craft, its insane. I frequently used to turn up for my hour lesson and heard him playing something incredible, and just said to him - OK, fu k the lesson, just walk me through what you were just playing!! It was crazy, and wicked awesome at the same time 😁

      @WhoDarestheMAN gamer Mangini smoked the f out of your stupid Virgil in auditions so what's your point again?

    • @shellrox2878
      @shellrox2878 5 лет назад +1

      @WhoDarestheMAN gamer All he has is speed? You're a special kind of moron it seems. Besides speed, he is an ambidextrous drummer who can play multilayer polyrythms and odd time signatures like it is a piece of cake. His control, limb interdependence and mathematical preciseness is incredible and far surpasses Virgil's, who made a lot of mistakes in Audition. Furthermore, Mangini can extrapolate his knowledge to other styles as seen in Guitar Universe and is perfectly capable groovy music as heard in BAI and Illumination Theory. By the way, he was a professor at Berklee, so even that is a sufficient argument to show how technically sophisticated he is.
      Mangini was already decided because they knew how capable he was unlike other drummers, and they ensured that in auditions. You are an obvious hater.

    Garey, I really appreciate that you review drummers from a variety of styles, and how you break down and explain the phrases and combinations very quickly as they’re being played. You obviously understand what’s going on. Your enthusiasm is contagious. My only complaint is that the sound is so thin and high pitched it’s kind of annoying to listen to. Is there any way you could upgrade the sound a little, cut down the highs and add some low end. Other than that, keep up the great work! So much better than most of the other reaction videos for drums. One “teacher” I was watching started a few of his videos by saying he wasn’t that familiar with the drummer he was reviewing, and only knew a couple radio hits. He then proceeded to give useless observations and inaccurate commentary. Then why even feature those drummers?!?! Yours on the other hand give clear explanations and insight.

    You should watch Danny Carey's Rosetta Stoned drum solo from his clinic I think it was... He plays one of the craziest polyrithmic themes, and it is in a song... And it is so smooth and musical that you don't even realise it when you listen it. It's on another level. I don't think Marco and Mike can match him.

    Look on Dream Theatre vids and you will see him not always described in the most polite terms. Personally I think he is amazing and technically the best Dream Theatre drummer. I first saw him in a thrash band. Who knew he was this good?

      Well Portnoy is just a different kind of drummer. A little more sloppy but less robotic. Both are very talented. I guess that separates DT fans.

      Vince Palamara He was the original and often works that way. Matt Sorum will never win over G n R fans despite being a much better drummer than their original drummer.

      misfit Mangini’s drumming leaves me cold. I don’t like his look, the look of his drums, or his drum sound. Let’s just have blast beats all thru Beatles songs to show MM’s “superiority” LOL! This reminds me of the countless guitarists who tried to out-Yngwie Yngwie: sorry, even if you may be technically better, get a frickin clue: music is more than just technique.

    Never liked DT at all, but Mangini is a unique and once in a lifetime drummer. The older I've gotten, the more bored I've become with most solos. But, his are enjoyable to listen too. Just so many things to absorb.

    Gary, COMPLETELY agree with you out soloing regarding drummers "playing over the audience's head". Drives me nuts when drummers solo and "change the subject" (as you put it) every 10 seconds....over and over and over. They just want to show off chops, but have no musicality or theme...Just completely random ideas with no direction which the lay person can't relate to. That's why guys like Neil Peart are in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame because he knows how to actually compose musical ideas into music.
