Mike was my drum teacher many years ago, when we lived in Boston. He's such an amazing guy, truly a top bloke as well as just an amazingly talented drummer, to the point of surreality. The way he mentally and physically understands the craft, its insane. I frequently used to turn up for my hour lesson and heard him playing something incredible, and just said to him - OK, fu k the lesson, just walk me through what you were just playing!! It was crazy, and wicked awesome at the same time 😁

His control, limb interdependence and mathematical preciseness is incredible and far surpasses Virgil's, who made a lot of mistakes in Audition. Furthermore, Mangini can extrapolate his knowledge to other styles as seen in Guitar Universe and is perfectly capable groovy music as heard in BAI and Illumination Theory. By the way, he was a professor at Berklee, so even that is a sufficient argument to show how technically sophisticated he is. Mangini was already decided because they knew how capable he was unlike other drummers, and they ensured that in auditions. You are an obvious hater.

When he leads with right hand on the hats, he uses his left foot on the kick, and when his left is leading, his right foot is leads on the kick. He has video on this. He is an amazing drummer. Watching him live in concert and clinics will hurt your head lol

I saw a Mike Mangini solo where,at one point he was doing bass drum, high hat and cow bell at the same time, while he was doing two different things with his hands.
Mike played a couple songs on one of my albums. At the time, he was using his symmetrical chrome Remo kit. He’s truly a beast and one of the nicest guys I know. It was amazing being in the studio with him and just seeing how he thinks.
Seeing from his interviews he seems like such a nice, humble guy. All his family really. His cousin I believe won an academy award. Talent runs in the family.

garey is pulling out all the stops and i got so many stories and fortunate to be close to boston to see these muscians and clinics. mike did a clinic for grand opening of drumshop who is personal friend of the owner and berklee teacher. mike had just found out he got the gig to dream theater. nice guy and luvs to count. he’s a mathematician and worked for raytheon on the patriot missile. any way unreal chops, and did another clinic last year. another sight to see closeup and personal. every time we go to dream theatre concert, only concert as soon as they hit the stage, better plan on standing for the whole show
Being a professional drummer playing these solos knowing that drummers around the World are listening and judging has to be extremely stressful and gratifying depending on how you played, I guess that’s why there’s professionals and apprentices, awesome to watch. Goosebumps.
Check out grant Collins, he’s a drummer from Australia, he’s known for creating drum solo compositions and free form solos on his kit, usually based around multi pedal orchestrations and musical themes and his level of four way independence is off the charts

Mangini is an amazing technician and a super nice man. He once said that Dream Theater kind of music requires time before the brain can eat it. But Minneman is the full package in my view, he makes so much beautiful music.
Great video. Nice overall analysis. Only thing I would say is, the patterns he is playing at 9:10, with a lot of commentator wow factor, are nothing more than glorified blast beats, which are, in itself, not exactly easy. But, thats what they are.
I know next to nothing about music but you have a "Bob Ross" style to you that makes me love your videos even though I don't know what the hell you're talking about. LOL. I get some of what you're saying but much is way over my head. but still, I watched and enjoyed the whole video.

Garey, I really appreciate that you review drummers from a variety of styles, and how you break down and explain the phrases and combinations very quickly as they’re being played. You obviously understand what’s going on. Your enthusiasm is contagious. My only complaint is that the sound is so thin and high pitched it’s kind of annoying to listen to. Is there any way you could upgrade the sound a little, cut down the highs and add some low end. Other than that, keep up the great work! So much better than most of the other reaction videos for drums. One “teacher” I was watching started a few of his videos by saying he wasn’t that familiar with the drummer he was reviewing, and only knew a couple radio hits. He then proceeded to give useless observations and inaccurate commentary. Then why even feature those drummers?!?! Yours on the other hand give clear explanations and insight.
One of the best studio drummers ever. He knows to stay the same volume at all times even when the songs escalate. That being said I enjoy Portnoys drumming better as he has much better groove and feel. Mangini is a beast but a bit robotic sounding, even if its technically great.

You should watch Danny Carey's Rosetta Stoned drum solo from his clinic I think it was... He plays one of the craziest polyrithmic themes, and it is in a song... And it is so smooth and musical that you don't even realise it when you listen it. It's on another level. I don't think Marco and Mike can match him.
Leddy Gee He was in the documentary but he didnt want to be included in the film because he didnt want to play in DT full time. By the way DT actually wanted him over Mangini before Marco turned them down.
Look on Dream Theatre vids and you will see him not always described in the most polite terms. Personally I think he is amazing and technically the best Dream Theatre drummer. I first saw him in a thrash band. Who knew he was this good?

Never liked DT at all, but Mangini is a unique and once in a lifetime drummer. The older I've gotten, the more bored I've become with most solos. But, his are enjoyable to listen too. Just so many things to absorb.
Gary, COMPLETELY agree with you out soloing regarding drummers "playing over the audience's head". Drives me nuts when drummers solo and "change the subject" (as you put it) every 10 seconds....over and over and over. They just want to show off chops, but have no musicality or theme...Just completely random ideas with no direction which the lay person can't relate to. That's why guys like Neil Peart are in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame because he knows how to actually compose musical ideas into music.

You should watch Danny Carey's Rosetta Stoned drum solo from his clinic I think it was... He plays one of the craziest polyrithmic themes, and it is in a song... And it is so smooth and musical that you don't even realise it when you listen it. It's on another level. I don't think Marco and Mike can match him.

Look on Dream Theatre vids and you will see him not always described in the most polite terms. Personally I think he is amazing and technically the best Dream Theatre drummer. I first saw him in a thrash band. Who knew he was this good?
Well Portnoy is just a different kind of drummer. A little more sloppy but less robotic. Both are very talented. I guess that separates DT fans.
I greatly respect Mangini, but I prefer Portnoy; always will.

Vince Palamara He was the original and often works that way. Matt Sorum will never win over G n R fans despite being a much better drummer than their original drummer.
misfit Mangini’s drumming leaves me cold. I don’t like his look, the look of his drums, or his drum sound. Let’s just have blast beats all thru Beatles songs to show MM’s “superiority” LOL! This reminds me of the countless guitarists who tried to out-Yngwie Yngwie: sorry, even if you may be technically better, get a frickin clue: music is more than just technique.

Not a big drum solo fan Garey...but he is impressive playing all those fives, incredible hand speed, and one handed buzz rolls with both hands...incredible,;still prefer Papa Jo Jones solos!

Never liked DT at all, but Mangini is a unique and once in a lifetime drummer. The older I've gotten, the more bored I've become with most solos. But, his are enjoyable to listen too. Just so many things to absorb.

Gary, COMPLETELY agree with you out soloing regarding drummers "playing over the audience's head". Drives me nuts when drummers solo and "change the subject" (as you put it) every 10 seconds....over and over and over. They just want to show off chops, but have no musicality or theme...Just completely random ideas with no direction which the lay person can't relate to. That's why guys like Neil Peart are in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame because he knows how to actually compose musical ideas into music.
