I know him persally, saw him several times in our Jazzclub Omnibus Würzburg, also doeing Drum Clinics-He is now over80 still playing. He once told me that fundament of his playing is the Basler Trommel, which he learned as a kid.You could hear Basler Tagwachten in the Solo.

3:43 I love that Charly keeps that hihat going throughout the solo. It gives everyone a reference and it swings! Drummers should never ignore the hihat when playing or soloing IMO..

Charly Antolini can also play in a very sophisticated and musical style. Just listen to his recordings with the Eugen Cicero Trio from the 1960s where uses brushes most of the time. In the 1970s and 1980s he recorded 5 fantastic LPs with drums, percussion and bass only, starting with "Knockout".

  • @Iamadrummer

The most famous left handed drummer to play a right handed kit was Ringo Star. Unlike some of these other drummers that would play left hand dominant bit lead with the right around the kit, Ringo would lead with his left. This gave Ringo his notorious behind the beat sound. Antolini was a great drummer and I learned several tricks from him.

Wonder why Charly pretty much always turned the left stich around and played with the butt end in trad grip. You get more power and volume that way but it seems the balance and speed would be off. There is a vid of him playing Sing Sing Sing with a big band, really great, I like it a little more than this one. The final solo in Whiplash I always thought sounded like a Buddy Rich solo especially the famous choo-choo single stroke slow down, build up ending. You should get an interview with Miles Teller, he did a great job in that movie.

C.A. is an absolutely sensational technician. But he doesn't play any original material and "solofies" everything to death, seemingly never just playing a melody, kind of exhausting to listen to.
