Phenomenal ... I saw him perform twice in Newcastle upon Tyne ( UK ) circa 1981 ... Firstly at a Tama sponsored drum clinic ... Secondly at the nearby City Hall with Jeff Beck on the There and Back tour ... Absolutely outstanding !

without question one of the best! I have seen Simon numerous times and have become friendly with his drum tech. I've also had the pleasure of meeting and talking
with Simon. One of the nicest cats around. I've been able to stand directly behind Simon as he plays. I'm talking where I could reach out and touch him.
His band, Protocol, is amazing, regardless of the lineup. If you get the chance go see Simon live, you won't regret it
    love the channel, Garey!

What a clinic !, in musicality, dynamics, themes, total control.....like playing a piano.
Starting in the 70s he laid down a lot of new ideas and concepts. Just one of those guys that raised the bar.
In the last 30yrs a lot amazing players have come along and taken things farther and beyond....always players to keep pushing the boundaries.
40yrs later he still has a real indentifiable character......you just know when it's him playing.
I love that with this solo, he doesn't rely on pure blinding chops(and he's got plenty), but more on the basic rudiments. He uses them in a very creative musical way, all around a large kit......not many players do that really.
A lot of people don't realize how long he's been around.....he's in his 60s now.

Simon is a small guy with a very large kit. Small guy. Big kit. Hmmm. Lol. This guy is a master of technicality and musicality. Years ago (and it's on RUclips), there is a battle between Simon and Louis Bellson. Check that out, too. What a treat. Thank you, Garey.

This was who I was listening to when friends said you need to get into Rush. I never really did get into Rush. Excellent drummer who no longer has a lead hand as he is as proficient with either hand.

For my money, the best drummer ever. Yes there may be better technical drummers but for me he's the best. I love the tone of his drums, love his thinking, love how busy he is across the drums, incredible reach and muscular playing, such a great left arm right arm player, and his foot playing is the same. So much dynamics and he can play anything really really well. He can turn it up and bring it down like a huge volume knob. Check his playing on The Who's Sparks live from 1989, it's insane. My favourite drummer ever.

  • @kingbee48185

My first concerts were Rush and Jeff Beck in the early 80s. Neil Peart, rest his soul, was fast and dazzling. I liked Jeff Beck, but didn't expect his 'there and back' show to be that good. That show was my first for jazz rock fusion, and I never expected to see a force of nature like that. It turned out to be a contest between Beck and Phillips, a rough tie. Simon doesn't do show off solos, but when he just lets lose with dazzling fills, he is equal to no one. I may be old school, but I rank Carl Palmer, Neil Peart, and Simon Phillips as the top 5 I saw live.

I'm fairly certain Simon is right handed. He used to play in the crossover fashion when he was a young man, a teenager I think, but then made a conscious decision to change to open handed. I saw an interview where he said he wasn't sure if he could do it but that he wanted to pusue it because it makes sense from a drumming and a posture perspective.
