Brilliantly played....great separation & integration of mind, hand, body, melodic & rhythmic skills. Simon was born to play the drums. He immerses himself 100% into playing them and takes the art and craft of creative & progressive drumming to new & advanced levels with each new solo.
I “played” the drums as a young guy. We had a band and had some fun. Simon is a freaking machine. Mad respect for such an incredible talent! I could only dream of having his talent!

watched him live with toto back in 97 I think. midway through the show he asked his roadie to swap out his right kick drum and he played half of that song with his left kick drum....not to mention the solo he did with percussionist Lenny Castro.
This guy is a good drummer who clearly grew up idolizing Billy Cobham- his drumming is a tribute in almost every way to the master. Make no mistake, Billy Cobham is the pinnacle of drumming and the standard by which all others are measured.
grybnyx Simon Phillips is one of the BEST.....In his own right. Cobham would tell us that himself! Name me someone better. Phillips speed and precision is SICK.. Tony Williams and Dennis Chambers were also great influences.
Clean. Clear. Calm. Doesn't even try to play blindingly fast but yet he can..and does sometimes but with such accuracy it sound slower than it is. Pure tuning. Can relax and let it come out with no panic. Can just play drums with no cymbals for a long duration.
Totally insane how talented Simon Phillips is. He is like the Yngwie Malmsteen of percussion. I don't even want to pick up my sticks again. Most people have no clue the degree of difficulty involved in this solo. Total Independence of limbs with masterful taste and style. I really want to quit playing. Oh well can't be a quitter so back to the drawing board FOREVERMORE cuz he is not human. He's a machine. Much respect to Simon Phillips, wish he would have joined Judas Priest instead of just playing on the album Sin after Sin. He would destroy ANY rock or metal drummer. Of course with the exception of the professor Neil Peart. They are in the same league, but I give the edge to Simon Phillips.

Tollaly agree with that, actually yesterday I was listening to both and as you said they are in the top, but as a huge Rush fan I have to say that the sound of Simon's drums is outstanding. There are faster drummers....there are drummers with more technique...but then there are players like simon...and steve smith....and Vinnie... yada yada and a hand full of other tasteful drummers that are among the best. Tasteful for the song.
Love Simon's drumming!! But I hate camera/video editing that wants to be creative in instances like this. I love different angles and shots, don't get me wrong, but the camera/video editing is there to capture creativity - not create it. Simon- another inspiring solo!

Met him back in 1996 when he toured on the SYMBIOSIS album and got to se him live with his band. A real nice guy and a fantastic drummer.
