I so much more enjoy drummers that utilize dynamics and musical taste rather that seeing how fast they can play and just bashing the hell out of everything. Simon is a prime example of musical taste and dynamics.
All trolls commenting negatively : I suggest you make a video of yourselves demonstrating your so called ability, post it on RUclips, then let the rest of us who admire and look up to this man/ drummer/studio engineer/producer, and session legend, be the judge of whether or not you're deemed worthy of even being as good as his pinky toe nail..Oh, then you can show us your career spanning credentials with famous musicians, artists, and bands..Better get cracking..
He is the only drummer that DOESN'T need any tonal instruments. It is more than rythm, I can hear sound too. Incredible. The best drummer of the world today.
He is a millionaire or close at least and his timing between hand and foot is not so great. I didn't thumb down but this solo is too sloppy for him. His worst solo I have ever seen. There are lots drummers way more advanced than this but since you want to idolize him go right ahead. He isn't the best by a long shot. He is still one of my favorites.
I first saw Simon play when he was about 15 at a party where there was no room so he set his kit up in a very small bathroom and he sat on the lavatory! Even then, he was a force to be reckoned with and we all said "This kid will go far."
I'm a drummer and I admit that I'll usually be the first to hit the concession stand when a drum solo starts at a live show. That being said, I could watch Simon Phillips play all day. Both he and Gavin Harrison do such musical solos; they're the only ones I really enjoy watching.

one of the best drum solos i've ever heard was by Marco Minnemann! put this in your search bar. /watch?v=ev51uPMB-XU it's starts off with the band for about 5 minutes but everything is freaking awesome! i agree with you though! Simon Phillips & Gavin Harrison is just masters of the kit!
Just goes to show drums do not have to be loud to be heard. Excellent job with the soft hits and unbelievable rhythm and timing. AWESOME Drummer! Incredible!
Simon Phillips is the consummate professional drummer. He plays with such great taste and feel and I really love the sound of his drums. I hope he gets back with the band Toto some day.
That’s some sick split work and open-handed independence and dynamics and tuning and...well, I could just go on and on. Geez, what a beautiful solo - there’s just so much to love about it. Simon is a hugely under-appreciated drummer.
I love his tasteful drumming and his natural, open, full and warm sound of the drums. He made some little "mistakes" in this solo, but in this high range of drum art, you can get easily over it
I've been listening to him since he played with Jeff Beck and Michael Schenker. The work he did with Judas Priest on Sin After Sin was also great. He is like a fine bottle of wine, he get's better with age. "Give Blood" which he did with Pete Townshend is still one of my favorite tracks.
I feel like the story-telling aspect is lost on many young drummer's solos. And seeing how you are spending a year covering the development of soloing, I'm excited to see what you bring to the table. I have found great value in your channel.
Me too! I hope he returns one day as long as they are touring. He has developed so much over the last 15 years (I swear, he's even more musical now!) and i would LOVE to hear some new Toto music with his skills.
Simon is one of my favorite drummers of all time. Original, always fun to watch and amazing. His drumming style is unique ... no duplicating here!! Love watching interviews .. he is a precision communicator like his drumming.
Simon has played this kit for years and i've always tuned my bass drums to his sound. Break the heads in by standing on them. Best trick he has ever showed all of us for tuning. such a Master Simon is.
I've been listening and admiring him for over 35 years in whatever combination he's playing with and he's still so satisfying, relevant and dynamic. I absolutely love his playing and he's such a HUGE influence on my playing.
I love the consistent staying true to the original beat and when allowed to go "off course", he still stayed true to the original beat. There was not confusion and I liked it :)
Having been a long time fan Simon, it was great to see some of the elements from the original DCI video solo from about 25 years ago. Still has that feel but very cool to see how over the years it has evolved, morphed and transformed into a killer solo that is still truly Simon Phillips! Cheers my friend to many more years of mastering this thing called the drum! You Rock and thank you for the lifetime of inspiration!
No doubt. I've been following Simon since about 1980. I was 14 years old then, and I thought he was a god. But now, looking back at his earlier stuff, it's amazing how much better he has gotten since then. He has continually improved his musicality and drum sound over the dacades.
So much you can say about so many good drummers. Simon has been one of the top for a long time. I've been a fan since the Judas Priest days. Still a fan today. There is no best, just a lot of bad asses out there, and everyone has their favorite.
he s been round for a while.played with many known artists. still kicks ass. still has the sacred fire. living legend. true master. long live to Simon !!!
What a tasty drummer. Really nice double bass work. I've never heard a Tama set sound so good. I especially like the boom on the giant tom to the right rear. Most EXCELLENT. Nothing could sound better.
one of my fave drummers ever .remember seeing the video of let my love open the door I saw simon doing the cymbal catches and I was like that's so cool .that's what I want to be a drummer.
Excellent use of wrist and rebound in his RH/LH single/double note rolls. SP’s so musical, clean, full of themes, paces himself, and uses the different timbres of his kit. Can make music on any size kit I’m sure and would never run out of ideas. Probably wore out his copy of the Stick Control book as well...
A few years ago I was at a drumclinic from Simon, the best and nicest I've been to. Not only his playing and musicianship are amazing, his stories also!
Love how he actually concentrates on using just the Tom's snare bass drum and high hats throght most of the solo with just enough cymbal use to make a very tasteful solo!!! What do you think people?
Love this guy after all it isn't what your play it is the gaps you leave he always make his drums sound amazing they look amazing and he plays so effortlessly you see so many drummers and you look at their faces and you think they're trying to bang one out he is always relaxed like I said it's not what you play is what you don't. Excellent
I so much more enjoy drummers that utilize dynamics and musical taste rather that seeing how fast they can play and just bashing the hell out of everything. Simon is a prime example of musical taste and dynamics.
john lindquist
I concur
Hello Ben Woodhouse!
You are right here. I can name some other drummers here. I will do that later with another context.
The Purple Love Assistant
And dave weckl is like playing guitar
Have listened to him on "all the best cowboys have Chinese eyes" an album by pete Townshend? If not worth seeking out!
I agree, but point much more palatable without shitting on the fast players (passively). Its equally as enjoyable for some.

looks to be a 90's Starclassic Maple in British Racing Green!
I think we know where those thumbs have been.
Rhythmista well said mate .
I am not sure if I ever heard a better sounding set of drums than these.
Justin Case they are Tama starclassic maple with no muffling except the kicks.
I was going to say Jon Karel's drum kit on The Number Twelve Looks Like You's album Worse Than Alone..but that was also a Tame kit haha.
I can vouch for that. I bought a set of beat up starclassic maples and with fresh heads, they sound like pure sex.
Virgil Donati, Thomas Lang, Gavin Harrison
I totally agree that his kit is among the best you'll ever hear but in this particular vid it sounds like tom 37 is about 1/2 step flat.
no muffling, no tape, TAMA drums are as flawless as Simon himself, the thud/punch of those bass drums are so sweet, he makes the kit sing.
I've never seen or heard a drummer with more feeling then this...perfection.
Gavin Harrison
He is the only drummer that DOESN'T need any tonal instruments. It is more than rythm, I can hear sound too. Incredible. The best drummer of the world today.
A melodic powerhouse of a drummer with an impeccable sense of timing.
Nothing you can't do if you have superhuman talent, constant dedication and continuous practice...
Came for the insane tom span, stayed for the incredibly tasteful, musical, dynamic drum solo.
Only about 50 years of practice and playing gone into that solo. Seen him with some great artists and he always elevates them with his own talents
Those TAMAs just sing! Beautiful sounding kit and a wonderful musician!
One of the very BEST!!!!!!
How anyone could thumbs down this is beyond me. Couldn’t be any actual drummers. Superb solo!
Liquid Audio
angry deaf people who can't hear is the only excuse i can imagine.
Probably someone who doesn't like green.
Liquid Audio
Apparently you are not familiar with the drummer Ego 😲
Liquid Audio Impossible to agree with you more. Great, tasty solo from the master. Simply loved it!
He is a millionaire or close at least and his timing between hand and foot is not so great. I didn't thumb down but this solo is too sloppy for him. His worst solo I have ever seen. Agreed. I would say the same about Steve Smith (most famously of Journey). Steve is a tonal-composer: ruclips.net/video/_WRrIQj-nZQ/видео.htmlm3s

Weckl Who?...….
Trent Davis yeah I'm a huge Simon fan and one of the main reasons I love his playing is he never plays the same solo
I think Mr. Phillips has matured and become much more musical as time goes on. Fantastic playing!
Makes it look so easy. That's how great he is
Just goes to show drums do not have to be loud to be heard. Excellent job with the soft hits and unbelievable rhythm and timing. AWESOME Drummer! Incredible!
Simon Phillips is the consummate professional drummer. He plays with such great taste and feel and I really love the sound of his drums. I hope he gets back with the band Toto some day.
A true legend, brilliant control, dynamics, crisp inventiveness. Could listen to and watch him all day. 🤘🥁☺️🥁🤘
I've seen 100s of drummers over the years and Simon is simply one of the best....his independence skills are lengendary!
That’s some sick split work and open-handed independence and dynamics and tuning and...well, I could just go on and on. Geez, what a beautiful solo - there’s just so much to love about it. Simon is a hugely under-appreciated drummer.
Even after all these years, it is still a pleasure to watch Simon play!
I love his tasteful drumming and his natural, open, full and warm sound of the drums.
He made some little "mistakes" in this solo, but in this high range of drum art, you can get easily over it
Sicuramente uno dei più grandi, tecnica unica classe indiscutibile, assolutamente eccezionale
I first saw him in a band with Stanley Clarke 40 years ago. He was already other worldly at that age. Fully ambidextrous.
That was just insane! Simon is like a mad scientist....so creative....impeccable timing......beautiful sounding drums.....a true master.
probably the most dynamics I've ever heard a musician ever play....! I love it. I always made an effort to have dynamics
The whole 'olympic chop out' gets tired real quick. Simon's musicality is inspiring, man. 13 straight minutes of aaawwww yeeeeah 😌
Rob Brown yessir!!!!
Agreed. Love your channel Rob!
Rob Brown i hate this comment section😂

Miss this man so much with TOTO. Always went to see TOTO 10 plus times every tour. ( 9 times for Simon only)
Me too! I hope he returns one day as long as they are touring. He has developed so much over the last 15 years (I swear, he's even more musical now!) and i would LOVE to hear some new Toto music with his skills.
I loved toto live because of Simon.
Simon Philips.. impeccable technique, jaw dropping mastery, wonderful musicality... what a fantastic drummer.
I always wondered why so many drums till I saw this video and the way he travels through his whole set is totally amazing!.
My favourite drummer. Grand Artist! 🤘
Simon is one of my favorite drummers of all time. Original, always fun to watch and amazing. His drumming style is unique ... no duplicating here!! Love watching interviews .. he is a precision communicator like his drumming.
his stuff is always so classy and tasteful.
love it
simon is so unique there's no body like him ! i could listen to him forever he makes that drum kit sing !
Simon has played this kit for years and i've always tuned my bass drums to his sound. Break the heads in by standing on them. Best trick he has ever showed all of us for tuning. such a Master Simon is.
An absolute pleasure to watch!! Thank you Mr. Phillips!! Amazing!

5:29 I love this drum beat with the breaks
I love the consistent staying true to the original beat and when allowed to go "off course", he still stayed true to the original beat. There was not confusion and I liked it
:)
I feel like I am hearing folk music in his melodies. Very beautiful.
You just gotta love the big deep rich sound that emanates from the man, the drums.
One of my long time favorite drummers! Ever since the MSG record

Totally musical solo, not just speed and technique, cool motifs and an awesome sounding kit that actually sounds like real drums
Not often a drum solo makes me smile, can watch Simon and Gavin anytime. Best of 🇬🇧 right there.
Great solo. Very musical with great technique. Simon is now one of my favorite drummers. Class act.
So much you can say about so many good drummers. Simon has been one of the top for a long time. I've been a fan since the Judas Priest days. Still a fan today.
There is no best, just a lot of bad asses out there, and everyone has their favorite.
Simon's one of the best in the business....his snare drum work is amazing...the master at work!
I added way too many extra chilli flakes to my pizza. My nose is running like a bastard and my mouth is on fire.
Nice drum solo Simon.
he s been round for a while.played with many known artists. still kicks ass. still has the sacred fire. living legend. true master. long live to Simon !!!
The musical, fantastical: Simon Phillips...always a blast to watch!!
So musical , a perfect storyline . Incredible drummer with open handed playing, and no drum muffling.
*_Simon Philips, is a remarkable musical drummer... I just love the way he pays a lot of attention to the tuning of his drums, brilliant._*
What a tasty drummer. Really nice double bass work. I've never heard a Tama set sound so good. I especially like the boom on the giant tom to the right rear. Most EXCELLENT. Nothing could sound better.
The taste and harmonious TONE!! Beautiful!
Love the notes and rhythm....syncopated licks at its best.
Simon, you are still getting better and better.
Simon is a TREASURE..full of goodies! Love this!
The green is so awesome back to the classic style! My favorite drummer!
Simon is amazing, such solid chops. Love the matched grip technique as well.
incredible drummer...one of the best and most musical
His drums are perfectly tuned which makes anything he plays sound fantastic!
Simon Philips always plays a wonderful solo!! I can listen to his music all day!!
one of my fave drummers ever .remember seeing the video of let my love open the door I saw simon doing the cymbal catches and I was like that's so cool .that's what I want to be a drummer.
First heard of Simon when he played on Big Country's The Buffalo Skinners album from 1993. The guy is incredible!
Grande baterista ,muito ritmico e criativo, adoro esse bateria ,parabens Simon e obrigado poe esses solos maravilhosos
Fantastic! What a Drummer, He gave us! Give Blood.
Every drum solo it's a kind of story. This one I was watching with pleasure.
Neil Peart can even take a lesson from Simon with me ! Thank you Mr Phillips !
Nathan, you’re Uncle is an inspiration to all serious drummers. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Dont get better then that..period. so innovative...so damn good....beyond good.
This Genius can play anything and with absolutely anyone and any band.......always comes across as a decent chap also.....
Proud to play drumms as open handed!!! He still is my example!! Of how to tell a story on the drumms!!!!
not many if any drummers make a solo sound like a piece of music simon did it was beautifull.p s.ginger baker and simon my favourites.xx
That was a joy to watch as always...
Absolutely flawless transitions, dynamics and musicality!
One of the greats still kicking ass!!
Fabulous tuning of a gorgeous set, by a fantastic musician, playing a dynamic solo void of continuous blast beats. ROCK ON
Simon is dynamic, aggressive, but OH SO SMOOTH in the groove!
This kit is tuned perfectly, sounds fantastic!!!
Sir.. you are a unique drummer💐💐, loved the performance a lot
Mon batteur favoris ! Toujours aussi impressionnant Simon Phillips ! Quelle légende !!
When you listen to him at 19 yo on "801 Live" you know he's a natural, nothing fake or showy about the man.
Always a blast watching this guy. Incredible playing.
Egads!! Wow. I am in awe. That's truly amazing.
World class drummer, amazing skills and creativity.
the master of the open hands!!!
Beauty! Simon is such a great player!
Great gentle touch on cymbals in the midst of all the rest!
A few years ago I was at a drumclinic from Simon, the best and nicest I've been to.
Not only his playing and musicianship are amazing, his stories also!
That little fill sequence starting at 5:05 with the double kick just before the crash to finish it... SO tasty
And 5 min 26 he thrash till death
He's very musical, wasn't remotely surprised when I first heard he was playing with Toto. Tama/Zildjian baby, yeeeaaahhh!
Mind blowing display of technique, independence and power - wowser!
Love how he actually concentrates on using just the Tom's snare bass drum and high hats throght most of the solo with just enough cymbal use to make a very tasteful solo!!! What do you think people?
So musical and the best sounding drums ever.

Excellent
kudos to whoever set that kit up
memory locks help
SP is known to set up his kits at times...
Tama has memory locks now for their toms. Plus usually pro drummers have their kits shipped as is when touring.
Wow, the crispness of the recording is simply WOW!! 😮
