This video is so legendary, that the original was taken down due to rights claimed over it, re-posted, re-deleted, re-re-posted, you can’t erase it. It will be here forever, because, just to re situate the context at the time, Jojo Mayer was not as known as you could imagine. After this video, it was like a bomb, “who is this guy ? How can he play that fast, how many left hands does he have ? Is it a real right foot or a mechanical one ? How can he talk so chilled out after that ?” Yep ! Jojo Mayer 👌👌👌…..
Of all the amazing things that happened in this performance what blows me away is that he was able to talk at the end of it. What talent, what stamina!!
One of my most important influences on me, how he created a band where de Drummer its the lead, and how that influences the rhythm and flow of a song its so incredibly exciting
Great reaction as always, Andy! This is an amazing song and Jojo's left hand is ridiculous throughout the whole thing. I think that "You don't get better by practicing, you get better by playing" actually goes back to Buddy Rich. Not bad company to be in!
Oh man I had this Modern Drummer Festival DVD when it came out. I remember buying it for Chris Adler and Jason Bittner, but Paice's performance and Mayer with Nerve made it one of my favorite drum videos ever!!
hahaha gone full circle hasn't it?? jojo is an absolutely elite level drummer, no question about that, where did drum and bass come from in the first place?? some kids playing around with a sampler and the b side of the winstons "amen brother" the amen brother break was 100% the real deal on the real drums, that got tweaked a bit!
2/09/23 7:47 PM Eastern standard time 60 miles south of Washington DC Well you just said it “not my cup of tea” but I’m old enough to appreciate remarkable talent when I see it. Amazing control of the sticks I really really enjoyed it. Thanks Andrew for opening up my musical experience Pat
Holy hand speed Baldman! What a video! I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t point out that you open the video by saying “hey hey what’s up Andrew, it’s me RUclips here.” Is there an inside joke I’m out of the loop on? Otherwise it’s a great blooper and great video, just added every Jojo album to my Spotify.
Re the bass sound when it first comes in: sounds like maybe a pitch shift pedal (like a Pitch Fork) and a soft fuzz. At least that’s how I’d try to get that kind of sound with my limited board. Could also, maybe, be a bass synth pedal. Very cool sound either way. Absolutely phenomenal drumming. Killer fills, so much control & great time feel.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums yep Andrew, his playing is waaay beyond amazing. Absolutely jaw dropping. I’m a jazzer and despite 55 years of playing I can only aspire to being as good as this guy. I often use that stick on stick lick but it took me months of constant practice to get it to EXACTLY fit the subdivision. When you’ve got it nailed, it does rather impress people…well those that are listening or watching you closely. Love your channel too mate!
Even Weckl has said it doesn’t matter which grip you use. There are great players using both grips. Find what works for you and stick with it. All the best.

Something totally, totally different. But a reaction to a different type of drummer would certainly interest me. Look up Christian Eigner (drums for Depeche Mode) 😉
its great drumming but theres just no story and i don't mean lyrics jazz you CAN FEEL THE MUSIC what the HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT LOL no its not even that cant put my finger on it i think its like elevator music lol worth the watch none the less have a great day

That OG Hudson Music cut lol
I can't remember how many times i've watched this performance when it came out! This left hand and this right foot!
my god....that snare shot way more rounds off than any movie arnold was in....ever!!.
Finally, there need to be more JoJo Reactions. Have seen him live several times in the 2000s … and everytime it’s just fascinating.
Jojo Mayer will ALWAYS give drum programmers a run for their money!
Of all the amazing things that happened in this performance what blows me away is that he was able to talk at the end of it. What talent, what stamina!!
Ha! That's true Phil!

At last, you find the hidden gems of drumming.
Raw drum and bass sound, no pun intended
I discovered Jojo about 20 years ago when Mike Portnoy mentioned him in an interview. His technique and musicality is absolutely awesome.
Phenomenal player 🙌
I legit cried while watching this not gonna lie

Yup I teach the amen break to all my students!
This changed my life, see him 4 years after live in Katowice. Mindblowing!!
it took me 9 years, probably the best night of my life
I'd trade both my hands for his left hand.
🤣👌
Or both my feet for his right foot!

You should check out his triditional 1-handed cymbal rolls.
Very happy to see some Frothy Monkey coffee on your table! All the way from Nashville, they used to make cigars as well.
I was at this event. He blew all of us away. Danny Carey also played at this event but couldn't be filmed and isn't on the DVD.

Jojo's Ted Talk in Zürich is also interesting.
Oh damn! That sounds good
meyer is legendary, indeed
I remember showing my bassist friend this video in high school in like 2008 when he was getting into Aphex Twin and drum n bass stuff..
Glad you caught the cymbal choke. Not that I could have been more impressed with his performance. But just Come on!!!!!
RIGHT!?
Doesn't miss a choke, doesn't miss a beat!!!
its like new Buddy Rich , or old good Buddy in new music :0 , nice....
Saw them in Zürich/Switzerland.
Oh lord 😲
Wow. I got winded just watching that.
ha, you had the same reaction I had when I seen it first..................just friggin' incredible wasn't it :)

Just curious if you are hip to the similar sort of stuff done Louis Cole does? Very cool vid! Thanks.
I always found traditional grip so awkward but when I see guys like Mayer or Weckl it seems like the way to go.
Even Weckl has said it doesn’t matter which grip you use. There are great players using both grips. Find what works for you and stick with it. All the best.
You should check out Tony Verdarosa.
Thanks for the tip Tim!
interesting how low the cymbals are
not raised

Ridiculous indeed.
was great until the solo..respect to all bedroom jungle ravers that spent hours resampling the amen just so JOJO could learn how to play DnB
