    The Surface 3 looks like a direct competitor to the 2015 MacBook.
    MS isn't letting apple capture that part of the market without a fight. Smart.

    Ik its a tiny thing but thank u for using the software keyboard instead of the type cover. Its just comforting to me to see a review (or person in general) using Microsofts software keyboard instead of making me feel like i have to dig up another $130 for the type cover just to type on the device.

  • @MAIcrosoft
    @MAIcrosoft 9 лет назад +3

    Finally! A review/comparison from someone who does not criticize the lack of Type Cover not "included". Not many popular tablets come with keyboards in the first place, and if you would have to buy the keyboard (that actually fits with the tablet) it would be probably as expensive as the Type Cover. Like you have showed it in your video, it works perfectly without the type cover. When I am on the go I actually prefer using it without the keyboard.
    I also want to add that I live in Thailand, where the average temperature is about 30 degrees a year. During summertime it can get about 35 degrees (celcius) average with maximums of 37~45 degrees a day. My SP3 i7 won't work very long until overheating and turning off unless I turn on the air conditioning or use a fan pointed on it. The S3 holds up perfectly and whenever I do not need to do much of heavy productive software the S3 is perfect! The 4GB model still keeps up very well and gets a lot of stuff done.
    Next to that the S3 is (much) lighter, has Micro USB charging (Thailand, hot, USB solar panel charger ;), same pen input as SP3, more portable and full windows! Still love both devices though :3

    I'd like to see a comparison between the Surface 3 and the WinBook TW100 you reviewed prior. I heard you mention that there really hasn't been anything like the Surface 3 until now, but aren't they fairly similar? Both have Quad Core Atom processors, both have 2GB of RAM, both run Windows. It's obvious to me that the support and build quality is better on the Surface, but my question is if it's enough to justify a $350 price difference.

    • @kiki11111100
      @kiki11111100 9 лет назад +3

      GGNORE screen quality, screen resolution, build quality, better updates and the surface pen... those are the main advantages of the microsoft really. To me personally the build quality alone would even justify the price difference (but I'm not really the average consumer :) )

  • @LogainAblar

    Excellent video comparison. Very informative. One thing I'd like to add, I am an artist and recently bought a Surface Pro 3 (i7, 8GBs RAM, 256GB SSD, type cover and 128GB mSD card) specifically for creative purposes. I'm using Krita at the moment in combination with Indesign CC, Sketchbook Pro 7/Sketchbook for Tablets, Paint.Net, LibreOffice (testing Office alternatives) and MS Office. and I can say the pen is phenomenal in my experience making Surface Pro 3 better than anything similar I've used in that regard. It's not even close. I considered the Surface 3 but decided against it because as good as it would be for the short term, in the long term, Surface 3 simply isn't powerful enough for my needs.
    I also own a Nexus 9 that I've use for creative work as well as the Nexus 7 (2013, 2012) series. The Nexus 9 is very good for creative work. Almost frighteningly so with a Wacom Bamboo Stylus even without pressure sensitivity. I prefer it over Samsung's Note series because Touchwiz is still trash IMO after all these years, Samsung's pricing model is ridiculous on average and their update schedule is suspect at best. With that being said, Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10 crushes them and is a gamechanger for me. I agree that it is the best product MS has ever created. Anything I did on my Win 7 laptop I can do on my Surface Pro 3 and more. Perfect? No, but exceptional nonetheless. Because of the nature of Android there are still some things that I prefer to do on the Nexus 9 from a creative perspective. That has more to do with Android/Google services and how those are integrated into the Nexus 9 but that simply means the Nexus 9 has a place next to my Surface Pro 3. I don't do iOS either so it will never be an option in my workflow. Too limited, still lacking key features not because the hardware isn't capable, but because Apple is blind in how it handles software/hardware functionality with their devices.
    I totally agree that mileage varies based on user needs and preferences but that's par for the course with technology in general. The Surface Pro 3 is pricey but does so much more in a tablet form factor that it's hard to believe at times. I've been using my device for 7 hours a day or more for the last week to really put it through its paces and have not been disappointed. Great experience overall, fantastic quality and a bonafide laptop replacement for many use cases.
    Thanks again for the video comparison!

      +Liz Evans Hi! I'm a graphic artist. Professionally my hat would be graphic designer. Logos, production layout, etc. But I create of lot illustrations, character designs, animations, photography...you know, the fun stuff, on my own time for my blog. My time with the Surface Pro 3 from the time of my original post has continued to be stellar. I broke up with Krita because as powerful as it is, I don't like the UI layout. So I'm using ArtRage 4 instead in combination with Sketchbook Pro 7. Excellent duo. A friend recommended Rebelle so I'll be trying that later today and I missed the Power Director (Ultimate) sale but I may throw cash at that soon too.
      In short, I love my Surface lol.

    Microsoft is doing AMAZING hardware, I wonder why they didn't start from decades ago... I have ordered the Surface 3 as I wanted a Windows tablet for writing and taking notes and for watching videos and so forth...
    My biggest concern was the weight of the device. I find SP3 heavier to hold.

      Agreed! But Microsoft has just started doing serious hardware (3 years or so) where as Apples hardware existed from decades ago. I would say Microsoft is advancig pretty fast and after Apple, Microsoft can be the second best hardware designer/builder in electronics by far. I honestly love my Surface 3 as I use it for reading and drawing.

    I wish I'd have known about this video when you made it. The Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (SM-P905v or SM-P907a)would have blown the Surface Pro 3 out of the Ballpark. Even now, three years later, Microsoft finally got 4G LTE connectivity on its latest Surface Pro offering. The fact of the matter is that the Surface Pro is still inferior to the Galaxy Note Pro as of June 2018.

    I really like the points you make. I had been looking to get a tablet that I could do some writing on. Portability being a huge factor. I had considered getting the Samsung TabS 10.5 with a logitech keyboard. But what I discovered in the research is that that Surface 3 Atom chip actually outperforms TabS octa-core chipset, at a cheaper price than the TabS with double the memory (64gb vs 32gb) though 1GB less in RAM- with the $499 version- TabS is 550. It really seems as though the Surface 3 is really a tablet first a computer 2nd, and is very comparable to the TabS in size, and performance. But the surface 3 has much more versatility. Do you find that the SP3 is to cumbersome to use as a tablet? That's really my only concern.

    hmm, no mention about the pros throttling problems under heavy loads and that you need a usb fan fan blowing onthe area wher the cpu is located to keep the pro from throttling. and when the pro pro do throttle its performance drops drastically to the point it is less than the surface 3.

      08jeanleyonda I think you'd be fine with the S3, I'm actually making a similar decision at the moment (I'm an Accountant too). I'm thinking if your going to use this as a tablet with the ability to write papers, create spreadsheets and portability is most critical, than the S3 would be for you. I've seen some reviews that prefer the S3 for notetaking because it's smaller.

    I am just curious what you think of the asus t100 from late 2013 (atom 3740 +2gb ram). I have been loving that, but I want upgrade for the better screen ratio and digitizer pen. I got the t100 for $300 and the CPU performance is similar to the surface 3 and comes with a keyboard.

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 9 лет назад

      feralshad0w Cherry Trail has 50% to 2x the GPU performance of Bay Trail and the Z3740 was more mid range ATOM versus the S3 using a x7 that's on the higher range... It's more comparable to the Z3795, like the T200 uses, for CPU performance...
      The T100 was specifically a budget device offering from Asus, the Keyboard dock is arguably nicer (they have been making keyboard docks longer than just about anyone) but in just about every other way the S3 is better but the price difference is hard to justify for everyone who don't see the value in the S3's more premium features like the built in pen support, DP instead of HDMI, etc.
      But the charging is faster on the S3, while battery life may be better on the T100, and not everyone sees the value of a full size USB 3.0 on the tablet instead of on the Keyboard Dock and the nearly double total price difference makes that a hard point to argue to boot... even though the S3 has much better build quality and QA for Asus isn't the best these days... but some may look at the higher resolution on the S3 and the 3:2 AR is more appealing to some for reading purposes than 16:9 on the Asus...
      Though, for those who haven't bought either, the T100 is getting a Cherry Trail update to a x5 option with the upcoming T100HA, exact release date not yet known... Still only HD resolution screen but they may offer a pen option like their Chi series supports...

    It's really is a shame that the best Atom chip from Intel in 2015 is still no match for both Apple A8X found in iPad Air 2, and the TK1 found in Shield. I wonder if the coming A9X & TX1 gonna match Intel Core i3-Y (Core M) in term of performance.

    • @CrucialConflict.
      @CrucialConflict. 9 лет назад +3

      Duckstalker1340 " It's really is a shame that the best Atom chip from Intel in 2015 is still no match for both Apple A8X "
      It's really a shame that apple's A8X hasn't been put to good use due to IOS, it can't do apps side-by-side...
      You can give it the most powerful chip in the world, but if it can't allow the user to use multiple apps at the same exact time through windowing then what's the point.
      Now lets talk about Microsoft Surface running WINDOWS... =}

    • @Duckstalker1340
      @Duckstalker1340 9 лет назад

      ***** I'm full aware of iOS limitation. I'm not Apple fan, but i would imagine if the A9X could match core i3 in term of raw performance, then the only thing left for Apple to do is software. There's even a rumour Apple is ditching Intel to go back to Arm for their Mac. The computing world is getting exciting again, no more domination from Intel.

    • @Lord5oth
      @Lord5oth 9 лет назад +1

      Duckstalker1340 they are of different architecture, totally different you cannot compare them and stop trying to, you're are only making a fool out of yourself.
      Atom x7 is a x86-64, Tk1 is an ARM Cortex-A15 and A8x is an ARMv8
      Normally newer architectures will be better more efficient, But backward compatibility can be extremely valuable, whats the point in having the fastest computer ever made with no software support ?

    • @Duckstalker1340
      @Duckstalker1340 9 лет назад

      Dread Steel In my opinion it is totally fine to compare x64 with Arm in term of performance. In the end what does it do for the users is what really count. Arm has come a long way and nearly matching x86 in term of performance. On the other hand, x86 has also come a long way and matching Arm in term of power conservative. Both architecture (RISC & CISC) have a long history dated back to 1960s, so because iOS doesn't do as much as Windows, doesn't mean it's not exciting if A9X possibly could match the Core i3 performance. Because besides iOS & Windows, there's another completely beast that call Linux. I would love to be that fool ;).

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 9 лет назад +1

      Duckstalker1340 Problem with the A8X is that it a highly optimized architecture... It's specifically designed to run iOS and nothing else! So no Linux will ever run on it, but even if it did they would not perform anywhere near as well as iOS does... The highly optimized nature is also why the A8X is only a triple core as each additional core would have diminishing returns and the architecture is really optimized for no more than dual cores, prioritizing single thread performance, which have been what Apple has been using in its iOS products for years...
      RISC and CISC differences have very little to do with performance these days as neither are entirely used on either platform...
      The K1 also does not really beat the modern ATOM in anything but GPU performance, which is where Intel is really behind everyone else but they are trying to fix that and Cherry Trail is the first step in that direction with a 50% to 2x performance improvement over the previous Bay Trail GPU... Still below a K1 GPU but the gap is starting to close and Intel plans another big update next year with a similar big improvement...
      The X1, though, does beat the modern ATOM in both CPU and GPU performance and is the better competition for Intel because it can run Linux and isn't as highly optimized as the Apple A8X... but that's Nvidia's latest and even Cherry Trail is still using 2 year old Intel tech... meaning the upcoming Broxton will be the real tell as to whether Intel can keep up or be left behind...
      Whether the future Apple SoCs will be similarly limited remains to be seen... If the rumors for a ARM based Macbook Air are to be believed then they'll eventually have to make a more general purpose SoC and we'll see then how it compares...

    What gpu does the Pro 3 have? Cherry trail?

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 9 лет назад

      ImmenseFox Intel GMA... Pro 3 uses Haswell i3/i5/i7 options... the i5, for example, uses the Intel HD Graphics 4400 (20 EUs)... according to notebookCheck.net the HD 4400 matches the performance of a dedicated Radeon HD 7550M.
      While Cherry Trail uses a mobile optimized Gen 8 (Broadwell) GPU (Like the Celeron/Pentium models this is usually described as a HD GMA) with 8/12/16 EU configurations, the x7 uses 16 EUs... and should be equivalent to around the performance of a Ivy Bridge 4000 (also 16 EU's) but the entire SoC operates under 4W TDP with a 2W SDP...
