    Microsoft Surface 3 Review: The Surface line of tablets has historically, well, sucked. Don't get us wrong; the hardware has always been brilliant. Windows RT inside just killed it. This is in contrast to the Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 and the incredible Surface Pro 3.
    Now, Microsoft has introduced a new Surface, only this time loaded up with Full Windows 8.1, just like the Pro. Imaginatively named the Microsoft Surface 3, It looks virtually identical to the larger Surface Pro 3, it has a 10.8-inch Full HD display and an Intel Atom X7 chip.
    Any good? Very. Watch our review to find out why.

    Great video- I actually just purchased a Surface 3 bundle for Christmas (for anyone who is interested, the bundle is $599.99 and comes with both the type cover and pen). My office still uses desktops, but I travel quite a bit and wanted something more portable than my MacBook Pro. My basic uses are for office (word, excel, powerpoint, and one note) and content consumption (mostly movies/tv shows/netflix). I'm not much of a gamer and don't do any video or photo editing. I was really torn between getting the Surface 3 or the Surface Pro 3, even though on sale, its still about a $300 difference. This video has convinced me that the Surface 3 is spot on for my needs! Thanks!

    more people are finally seeing the light :) I bought a surface pro 3 9 months ago. I upload all my professors' lecture pdf's to onenote (full version, not quick note) and annotate over top of them with the surface pen. I've since gone paperless to such an extent that writing with pens and pencils almost feels like a foreign experience.
    I won't sit here and bash the macbook, but think about it this way. for a very simlar price, you get a Surface Pro 3, a slightly more portable full windows 8.1 (soon to be 10) TOUCHSCREEN laptop/tablet with a digital pen.

    • @thoyo

      Hi Sasanka, mathematics isn't my specialty, but it is my understanding that onenote does a good job of handling math notation. there is an add-on linked below. also here's a simple example of the "ink to math" function watch?v=eM-Ojx6fkbQ

      Sasanka Kuruppuarachchi Hey Sasanka. I'm a mathematician, using a ThinkPad 10 (similar to Surface 3, with Windows) for my work. I've gone paperless as well. It handles math notation best by just not handling it. I think there are ways to convert handwritten math to text in OneNote, but I just leave it as handwritten. If it's worth typing, it's worth TeXing anyway.
      I use OneNote for notes-taking and scratch work and DrawBoard to annotate PDFs.

      Noah Forman Thanks for the insight Noah. I'm using my surface 3 nw. I downloaded the math add-on for office. First it was a bit confusing to handle math with it. but I got used to it. It's capable of doing really advanced stuff .Yeah one note is very useful. It helped me a lot even in my robotic projects.

    Very Impressed at your presentation here! Outstanding to say the least. Well done my Basil. I keep looking at this when I go buy it in the store and wonder if it would get hot on my lap with continued use say over 10 minutes or a movie or extensive usage of the Surface. Does it heat up on the bottom? Thank You Basil.

      gene978 Thanks for the kind words! It doesn't heat up at the bottom. We used ours for over two hours in a single sitting, writing around three review scripts with the Surface 3 on our lap - no discomfort from heat.

    Great review as always! Honestly, this should be a no-brainer. If you want productivity, or hell, even if you just want compatibility, then you get a full Windows device. Android and iOS are much more consumer focused.

    Fanastic Review! I just bought one on cowboom for 280usd.. and a used keyboard for 50. After watching lots of reviews the bottom line was it's a great tablet/laptop(kinda) replacement but every review mentioned it was a bit too expensive. I would say if they bundled the keyboard for $500 it would be a no brainer.

    Hi Basil. Great video as ever, am a long time fan of your channel. Considering getting one of these but concerned about the integration with services like Spotify and RUclips on which I rely heavily on a tab style device.

    Hi!, this is an amazing review!. One quick question, have you tried the new Surface Pen 4 on this Surface 3?, just wanted to check how well does it work with it, I know that we would not get the same amount of pressure points as in a Surface Pro 4, but to the least, would be nice to have a quick comment on any experience using the newest MS Pen with the Surface 3.
    Thanks!, Cheers

    Great review man... really enjoyed it. I'm planing to buy one for my university works next week.I was using a Asus Vivotab note8 for past few months and I want to know whether it is worth upgrading for a S3? and does it handles mathematical notations well on one note wit surface pen? can we replace the SSD ?

    • @HarshJha
      @HarshJha 9 лет назад

      Sasanka Kuruppuarachchi I'm buying one for college as well :)
      The S3 definitely has better peripheral integration than the Vivotab.
      It does support mathematical notations with the pen.
      It doesn't have an SSD but rather an eMMC which most tablets use. The Pro 3 does have an SSD though.

    I have a Apple Macbook Air from summer 2014, is it a waste to buy Surface 3 then? I am thinking to switch out my iPad 2 with the Surface 3, but also get a "PC" to have with me on traveling, when i don´t need the Mac. So what do you recommend? a surface, i new iPad og nothing?
    You sad that you recommend the Surface 3 with 128 GB, 4GB RAM, but I thought it is a little to much money... so if you can think in the price tag of a 64 GB (...), and then the main question; So what do you recommend? a surface 3, a new iPad og nothing?
    Thanks anyway, great video! :)

    • @tech_edit
      @tech_edit  9 лет назад

      anonemys Either would be great - lucky niece! The benefit of the Surface would be that it can effectively replace a laptop and tablet, whereas a MacBook would be a traditional laptop. There is no Macbook configuration as low-cost as the Surface 3. As a result, the MacBook would be more powerful. The Surface, more versatile. If she needs power at a price, go for the MacBook. If she'd benefit from portability and versatility, the Surface would suffice.

    I'm getting a 64gb 2gb ram model in the mail soon. I mainly bought it so I can do some digital art again (because drawing using a laptop touchpad is a bitch) because of the surface pen. I might put a game or two on it, but it's mainly going to be used as a digital sketchbook
