Still a great looking car. The passage of years has been kinder to the Capri than many of it's 70s/80s rivals. Thanks for another enjoyable review, Paul.

Turns out that this lad was a bit of a prophet, as good 280’s have rocketed in popularity, particularly during the last couple of years. Neat interior and bigger wheels equals almost double the value of an almost identical 2.8i Special. Dead clever marketing by Ford.

When the 2.8i was launched in 1981, it developed more net hp from an na engine than a 6.0 v8 cadillac, also new for 1981. The daft thing was the 6.0v8 had multi displacement technology to improve mpg, but could never get near the 31mpg the capri 2.8i would achieve at a constant 75mph. Its almost like the new ecoboost engines using more fuel than the larger na engines they were meant to replace.

Oh how i miss my old 280. Started with a 1.6s then two capri 2.0s. Then saw a 280 by chance in a garage been repaired. Two months later i was the proud owner of one. The only thing that let it down was the limited slip diff and the poor headlamps.

I was 19 in 1987, went on to a Mazda RX7 old shape, a Jaguar XJS 5.2l V12. , an brand new BMW3 series in 1995, then a top spec Audi TTR ( Olive Green)... @@posniknelb6114 Legend has it, that what was going to happen but Ford of America stopped it because the gearbox and brakes were inadequate to cope with the extra grunt and they didn't want cost for repairs, only for the gearbox to break again. (I read that somewhere)
Ford America did the similar pulling rank to the Sierra Cosworth, uncorked it was going to be 270hp but it was pegged back to 204hp. (Read that in the history of Cosworth book).

    • @posniknelb6114

The Borg Warner t5 gearbox in the cosworth can handle up to 500bhp. There have been plenty of Capri's TT/ turbo's out there running around the 200bhp to 230bhp mark with the V6 type 9 gearbox. They are pretty much chocolate above that mark though. They can't handle the torque that comes above those power figures.

Very decent review man👍. I'm on the brink of coming into posession of my mums long loved and prized 1981 2.8i 4 speed! It needs a little touching up to go on back on the road after being garaged for 15 years but I can't wait to give it a go! I'm rather torn between either keeping 110% stock as it is or making some tasteful upgrades! Sich as adding the Technics Tirbo that was on half of the Brooklands from the factory and in doing so add about 70bhp! And maybe a limited slip dif from a brooklands too and some modern brakes and a little stiffening to remove all forms of body roll etc. My question is, is that all wise and/or tasteful? Is it sacrilege?? The updates are mild but its a 110% stock pristine example of the first year of the 2.8s and its even a 4 speed and thats the really rare and special one to get to! So, Is modding it tastefully an unforgivable act or not? I literally can't decide! Yours and anyones input would be appreciated :). And again, great review and keep up the great work man👌👍

Had a few Capris. Two mkIII 1.6L models, a mkII 2.0 Ghia auto and a b-reg 2.8i Special.
Out of all of them I found the best to be the 2.0 Ghia auto mkII.
Not as quick as the 2.8i, obviously, but nicer. I drove two 3.0 models but didn't own one. Out of all of them my absolute pick would be the mkIII 3.0S that I borrowed. I regret not buying one because it was so much sweeter to drive than my 2.8i.
More low down grunt and by the time you got the revs up and thrashing it the little extra horsepower of the 2.8i didn't really matter on the road. Only on paper.

As one who was there at the time and drove a Capri in the cops as a response car, you have to be honest. It was a barge that handled like an overstuffed sofa. I am really sorry, but this is the truth if you compared it to anything half decent of the period like a Lotus Sunbeam or (even the sister Ford) RS 2000. The wheel base was too long, the suspension too soft, the engine too lazy to pick up, and a back end so light we resorted to putting bags of potatoes in the hatch / boot to get some traction from the rear wheels - not at all comfortable on a motorway +70, certainly not on rough back roads for a cross country sprint. It was a posers car, marketed by Ford to pub legend wannabes and dads going through a 50's man crisis.
On the make believe cop show, The Professionals, they had a 3.0 lt Ford Galaxy, a MK2 Escort RS 2000 and a 2.0 S Capri. They wrote off 3 or 4 Capris during second season filming and Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw fought over who would get the keys to the RS first. No one wanted to drive the Capri... but Ford were contributing to the show. It was an advert, dressed as a TV show.
And in the wet or any kind of snow and ice... well, you just left it at the nick. And got in the 3.5 V8 Rover Vitesse instead.
Once again, not wanting to trash your review, but get the facts right and be honest instead off simply promoting average car values for the classic dealers.
