Last week, I happened to be staying with Mr James Coleman, aka The Rubbish Mechanic, who had temporary custody of a beautiful 1987 Ford Capri 280 Brooklands. Having recently attended the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Capri Celebrations at the Brooklands Museum in Surrey earlier this month, I was only too happy when Mr Coleman informed me that he would be able to start the car up whilst I was there.
Having been in storage for some years, the Capri in question was not able to be driven on the road until some work on it was complete, but I was able to do a walkaround video, having asked the owner's permission, who merely asked not to be named and to have the numberplate obscured. After setting these rules out, I endeavoured to contain my excitement as I was able to get up close and personal with this absolutely beautiful car.
Be prepared for some properly wonderful noises from a 2.8 Cologne V6 engine, a surprisingly shallow boot, very attractive alloy wheels, some very nice leather Recaro seats, a strange position for a hazard light switch, far too much detail about a period RS steering wheel and inadequate homage paid to this iconic automotive delight. Nothing untoward, then!
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

Thanks to you both for allowing us to see this beautiful car. I love this era Capri
Ah, yes sir, the Mark III Capris are pretty special. Will be doing a full review on one next year!
Happy memories I had one at 3 years old. Bought it off a bloke that worked at the Ford factory in Liverpool.
Thank you ever so much indeed! Yes, an amazing car, I had the privilege of reviewing a 1982 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection with a four speed gearbox last October on the channel, and it was a real privilege. I think it was a lot more common to for a second owner to buy a car from someone who worked a factory back in the day.
You make such good car videos Joseph. I love the level of detail of these vehicles that you know. Thank you for showing us this Capri. Pete 🇬🇧
No problem at all, sir! Glad you have been enjoying looking through the archive. This was certainly a car worthy of a detailed look!
I never used to make noises like that getting out of my Capri but probably would now. ☺
Wasn't the easiest car for entry and exit!
Very nice car, great film once again👍
Thanks ever so much indeed, Andrew! Glad you enjoyed it.
What a stunner great video
Thanks ever so much indeed, Jason! Yes, this is a very special car, as is yours, of course. Hope that you are doing really well.
What a lovely Capri, worth as you say quite a fair whack of £££
Yes, these are now very valuable cars, and it is easy to see why! Thank you ever so much indeed for watching.
I had a ‘c’ reg 2 litre which looked much smoother shape but very similar. Much better seats. Nostalgia! Thanks for the video.
No problem at all, Keith! Glad you enjoyed it. I love these late Mark III Capris, we are aiming to film a review on a 1987 Capri 2.0 Laser on my channel next year.
Nice Motor, there was one of these in our village for a short time, till it was TWOC’d in the late 80s, love the Recaros and other additions *ben
Ah yes, sir, those leather Recaro seats are very nice, aren't they? Capris certainly were often Taken Without Consent on those days, sadly!
Thankyou for a look around that fantastic Capri, amazing to think that the Ford dealers had trouble selling the final ones. The dash is exactly the same as that on my old D reg Capri Laser apart from the radio. I think if memory serves me they were being sold off for about £12000 in 1986/7,great shame you cant buy a decent one for that now.
Thanks Andy! Yes, as you know, I have a review on a 1987 Capri 2.0 Laser coming up on the channel early next year. Looking forward to it very much indeed! I love the look of these Mark IIIs, and this one is in lovely cosmetic condition, it just needs a bit of mechanical work and recommissioning. Yes, Capris were very much out of fashion by this time, and the Escort RS Turbo effectively replaced it. Apparently, some of these were on F or even G plates!
Oh my goodness. I owned a 2.8 I back in the later 80’s . The best car I ever owned. I would love to own one again . Great to see such a fine example again . I have to make a confession about racing a Escort RS200 on the M6 at illegal speeds 😜 times when cars were interesting.
Thanks Stephen! Yes, this a beautiful Capri, although she does need a bit of recommissioning work, so I understand. I will be filming a walkaround of a Capri Laser quite soon (another viewer has very kindly offered me to film theirs) and then next year I will be doing a full review on another Laser, an immaculate 1987 2.0 model. I have a full review on my channel of a wonderful 1982 Granada 2.8 Ghia X Estate, and a few other classics, such as a Volvo 960 and Rover 620 if you are interested. I also did a couple of podcasts recently about the cars used in The Professionals, including the RS2000, of course! The video I made at the Capri 50th Birthday celebrations last month has to be one of my favourites ever...
Another great video of the iconic Ford Capri. You can do a video on my Capri Laser if you want. :)
Thanks Daniel! That is very generous of you indeed. Please get in touch with me at japl745@hotmail.com and we can take it from there...
Nice car. My favourite toy car was a capri like this one when I was a kid, it belonged to my cousin though.
Yes, this is a beautiful car! I don't think I had any Capris as toys when I was younger, although they would have been around at the time...
I had 3 capris yrs ago, one a gold colour with brown vinyl roof , 2 ltr Ghia, and had a rare 1300 , in red don’t no how many 1300 cc cars they made , underpowered, but also would be worth a few quid now , cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Thanks very much indeed, Shane! Yes, Capris are a lot more valuable these days than they used to be. I attended the 50th birthday celebration for the Capri at Brooklands last year (one of the most popular videos on my channel, in fact), and it was brilliant. So many different types of Capri there! Hoping to get one on my channel for a full review at some point later this year.
Yep. Takes me back. I bought one after trading in my ex fiance's engagement ring. The only car I ever sold for a profit. Mine was a D reg. I had a 1982 silver and blue when I was 21 as well. I broke even on that one :)
Gosh, I didn't realise these cars had quite so much emotional resonance with people, but of course it makes perfect sense! Yes, extremely valuable cars now, Capri prices seem to be constantly on the rise. This one has now gone to a new home abroad.
Great video and a beautiful car
Makes me feel like a teenager again
Definitely prefer that to my insignia
Thanks ever so much indeed, Steve! It's a beautiful car. Definitely not as practical as an Insignia (I quite like them, actually), but iconic and interesting nevertheless. One does feel a bit like Lewis Collins sitting in the driving seat, I must admit...
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Next tweed jacket review then Lloyd ( the insignia ) 👍
@@stevestaff7425, can you remind me of the area where you live, the model year of your Vauxhall and its specification? An Insignia is certainly on my list to review.
@@lloydvehicleconsulting certainly Lloyd it's a facelift 2014 , 64 plate 2.0 CDTI Ecoflex Elite with the intelilink system ( very nice spec to be fair )
I'm in Warwickshire near Nuneaton 10 mins from Coventry
Your more than welcome to it for a review of needed
Thanks Steve! That's wonderful. It's not far from where Mr Coleman lives, actually. The specification sounds excellent, will have to get round the diesel issue somehow (it isn't the first time we have done it)... If you want to send me an e-mail at japl745@hotmail.com, then we can take it from there!
I want this car so bad .
It was amazing! It has now been sold and gone to live abroad. I do have a review of a 1982 Capri 2.8 Injection as part of the Tweed Jacket Reviews playlist on my channel now, and that was a similar colour, although not identical. Wonderful old cars!
I wish we in the USA got the later Capri's
We only got 76-77 models only
I have a 71 2.0 4spd and a 74 2.8V6 4spd
Yes, you didn't get a massive selection over there, did you? Would love to review a MK1 at some point, got a full review coming up on a very late MK3 (not this one) coming up next year. Yours sound lovely!
Does anyone know if they made an automatic brooklands ? I’d kinda like to get one but can only drive an automatic now due to disability .
I am pretty sure the 280 Brooklands was only available as a manual. I don't know if they even made a 2.8 Injection with an automatic gearbox, sadly. I will have to ask my friend Mr Coleman (The Rubbish Mechanic) himself!
great stuff, infact bodie and doyle would be proud if they were given this brooklands or a tickford edition in the old dog with new tricks episode! but the question is would cowley and clemens approve?!.....
Well, I think that they approved eventually, but they had to warm up to it a bit. I saw lots of Tickfords at the Brooklands Museum for the 50th Birthday celebrations, it was wonderful to see them there!
I like Bodie and Doyle :-)! These are... THE PROFESSIONALS!
@@howiehamburg1372, they were indeed! More Capri content coming on my channel later this year.
regret selling my cossie capri and a 280 project i had .... just didn't have the time to complete both .
Fantastic cars, aren't they? I released a video this week on a Forest Green Capri 2.8 Injection four speed that I was privileged to drive this month, and it was absolutely brilliant.
When I win the lottery
They aren't cheap any more, are they?
