Leno also said this car was "fast" its not fast, its quick. Leno just doesn't know everything, he cant... but who tf questions a car guy that OWNS it? Leno IS wrong, everything Allen said was facts.

Thank you for showing this car! I did quite a bit of research on the RS200. Even if the World Rally Championship doesn’t seem famous in North America, the RS200 was, shall I say, relative successful there. 200 cars have been made for homologation, of which some 50 have been dismantled again as spare parts for rallying. Of the remaining cars 12 made it to USA and 1 to Canada. Tim Allen’s car is # 165 of 200.
I think I can offer a few interesting things that Tim Allen and Jay Leno were not too sure about:
The Ford RS200s were assembled at Reliant, most famous for small 3-wheeler cars as the #ReliantRobin. This may sound very surprising. But the RS200 was designed by Ghia and engineered by Ford Motorsport UK. So for assembly the company didn’t need to be a sports car manufacturer, it needed to be someone who can run such a small production and has experience with composite materials and that made Reliant an obvious choice. While basically everything, chassis etc. was specially made for the RS200, it borrowed many parts especially from the Ford Sierra. Rear lights, windscreen, shortened doors and some dashbord panels are all from the Europen Ford Sierra, that in the USA was briefly sold as the Merkur XR4Ti.
The RS200 engine indeed has nothing to do with Lotus. This is a falso information. However I can see where this misconception may come from. In World Rallying Ford used the Lotus Cortina. Next came the smaller and lighter Ford Escort RS, and despite the Lotus bit missing in its name the rally Escorts at first had the 1.6L Lotus engine from the Cortina. But over the years this engine became too small, so Cosworth designed a larger “BDA” engine based on Ford’s own Kent 4-cylinder to replace the Lotus engine in the early Escorts. This engine was then used as a turbo charged “BDT” 1.8L in the RS200.
It is not entirely correct to say the rally versions had a 2.1L engine. In 1986 the works rally cars also had the 1.8L and power output was “only” 420BHP. And it was not only the accident in Portugal 1986 that killed the groupB, next was the sad deaths of Henri Toivonen and his btw USA based codriver Sergio Cresto on Corsica that eventually drew the line. As for the engines, in rallying there was a regulation that identified a minimum weight in line with engine size. Most teams chose a 1.8 that with turbo factor (x1.4) fitted the 2.5L class. The Ford RS200 with its clever transmission layout but a double propshaft was quite heavy and could never profit from the low minimum weight and therefore Ford decided to enlarge the engine to 2.1L (x1.4 = up to 3.0L). With this larger engine power output way beyond 500BHP was possible. Ford developed this larger engine for 1987, but by that time groupB rallying was banned from the WRC.
Finally Tim Allen keeps mentioning the groupB Renault and Peugeot. These cars had some body and chassis panels from their road going sisters R5 and 205, but still were very remote from these. Moreover what Tim Allen questions: No, the groupB Renaults and Peugeots have no similarities at all. While Peugeot also owned Talbot and Citroen, Renault is their number 1 competition. It also is seen in the layouts. The groupB Renault R5 engine is longitudinally mid-mounted with rear wheel drive only and as such mainly of use on asphalt. Despite winning Monte Carlo, the R5 was more aimed at French Championship rallying only. The Peugeot 205 T16 has the engine transverse mid-mounted and 4x4 and made to win the World title on all terrains. Winning all titles in 85 + 86 the 205 T16 is probably the biggest icon of groupB today. So they are very, very different projects, but both no doubt fascinating.
Hope this was interesting and informative for everyone - maybe even for Tim and Jay.

I worked for Essex Police (England) in the early 80s and the force had one of these gifted by Ford. It had police markings and had some low level lights on the roof. It certainly looked cool, however, the drivers could not handle the clutch in and around town and it didn't last long. Homologation required 200 of these to be built in order to classed as a production car. Good to see this on the road.

Several Police regions liked to promote the idea that they had the fastest thing on the road so I can see them accepting the car as a PR / status symbol initially. We had several such cars in South Yorks including a Lotus Carlton which stood up most of the time and a de-badged RS500 Ford, close to the rally car.
Personally I liked the TWR fettled Rover 3500 V8 Vitesse with fuel injection, big brakes and a full air kit - they never disclosed the performance figures although it would do 68 MPH in second gear as it launched up the motorway slip road towards 155 when it went off the dial. Fairly close to the Tom Walkinshaw touring car I suspect, adjusted for the road and longevity, although we lost a few air dams over country road fresh air jumps on a shout.
Perhaps the shortest (period) vehicle we had was the less successful replacement offered by MGR - the Rover 800 1.8 Ti ... the K series engine with injection and a turbo. Unfortunately we managed to blow up two engines on the three test cars, during the Rover assessment day. No chance they would stand up to 24 hour response work.
The normally aspirated KV6 24 valve MG ZS with 200 BHP fettled by Pro Drive, again a touring car in essence, was much better by Rover although too small for patrol needs unfortunately.

The road versions had to be built to comply with regulations but heavily under tuned compared to the rally cars. I went to watch a few stages of the British Lombard/RAC rally back in the 90’s and can tell you, it is like no other motor racing! Watching the Welsh forest stages in the snow was a great experience. The fans had to walk along the narrow dirt tracks that they actually raced on, to get to a decent spectator point. At the sound of the Marshall’s whistle, everybody would dive off the track into the ditches or trees, as you probably had about 10 seconds before a rally car would fly past you at over 100 mph! Looking back now it was incredibly dangerous, but tremendously thrilling. I still have a few photos from back then.
Also, on the drive home after the event, you would often be passed by the rally cars, as they had to drive on the road in between stages! That’s an experience you don’t get in F1!

Love the channel, and this has to be my favourite Group B car. Since I was a rally fan watching Group B cars in rallying an rallycross back when these cars were new, I might be able to clarify a couple of points: The twin coilover dampers at each corner were for, among other things, heat rejection - single dampers would overheat on long rough stages. The engine is a Ford BDT designed by Cosworth, and is not related to the Lotus Twin Cam. The road car clutch is a racing twin plate item because the homologation rules said you weren't allowed to fit a different clutch to go rallying, so every RS200 has a clutch that'll handle 550bhp. The tubular chassis was designed by Ford and isn't shared with any other car. The main reason it wasn't more successful in rallying against the Peugeot 205 T16 and Lancia Delta S4 was that it was late - Ford spent a long time working on a front-engined car for Group B (the Escort RS1700T), before canning that project and building the RS200. That gave the other manufacturers a 2 year head start on developing their cars.

To add another point, it was overweight. Despite having a higher minimum weight (due to engine displacement rules) it didn't get near the weight limit.
The Delta S4 for example had such a weight saving that the chassis ended weak and felt vague on tarmac.
Thats kinda the neat thing about Group B. Each car is a flawed beast.

Thanks for the video. It wasn't just the Ford accidents that led to a ban and withdrawal of the Group B series. Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) had promoted with little regulation a rally series which was out of control in terms of open ended development, cost and lack of safety for competitors and spectators. By 1986 the Group B cars were largely a fuel tank on wheels, fibre glass, aluminium chassis, little bracing and incredibly quick kit cars - great you might say, except these cars were not on a flat, perfect tarmac Formula one circuit with emergency service vehicles and ambulance helicopters every 100 feet. Instead they were hurtling down remote forest tracks, gravel canyons and ice covered roads at +100 MPH.
In hindsight, this was completely insane and death waiting to happen, and it came with FIA initially slow to react. The final straw came when Henry Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto were incinerated in their seats when they left the road during the Tour de Corse on the island of Corsica. The car exploded and by the time anyone got to it there was little left, the vehicle so flammable that it literally went up in flames. In minutes.
What made this worse was that Toivonen himself and several other drivers had been complaining for a good deal of time that the vehicles and series were unsafe although such was the contractural, media and revenue pressure that no one in charge was listening.
Henry's last public statement was reported as: "Today, we have driven more than the whole distance of the 1000 Lakes Rally (Finnish Rally). After 4 hours of driving - it's hard to keep up with the speed. So, with a modern car like this, it's just impossible to race here. It's physically exhausting and the brains can't keep up with it anymore."
As stated insane. Many people died as a result including children. Not motoring's finest hour. RIP.

Here in Europe, Cosworth engines are very well respected!!! The company's name comes from the two men that started it back in 1958, Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth.
I have been fortunate to own two Ford Sierra RS 500's and their Cosworth YB engines were bulletproof!!! One was a street-car, but with racecar specs, including a full cage, and the other one was a full blown racecar, capable of competing in Hillclimbs, Rallies and even Drag Races around Europe. They are just 2lt, but one of them produced 854hp on its racing tune, and the other other one gave out 1370hp on its racing tune. They never gave me any trouble, even though they were driven very hard!

My parents neighbor had one of these during my whole childhood. I loved when his garage door opened and he pulled that car out. I loved it as a kid. Love it even more as an adult. He said he was taking it to auction and I asked if I could buy it instead. He knew that I had no idea what it was worth. He got over $200k for it, whereas I had about $15k to spend on a vehicle haha
