    Two great things about George. 1) fantastic ball player. 2) on a personal level I met George at a Tom Petty concert shortly after the sprint center opened in KC. I paid like $300 for a pair of tickets and was like 4-5 seat away from him. He was loaded and invited me to the VIP bar and we did shots together. I’ll never forget it and still have the old flip phone with our picture on it.

    Brett is my favorite player of all time! I was born in Kansas City, Missouri. I, however, grew up in Texas. Royals games were not broadcast in my area, so I only got to watch George play if he was playing against the Rangers or it was the playoffs. I religiously checked the paper for the box scores every game. I even clipped ones when #5 had a big game. I still have one when he hit for the “cycle!” He was such a clutch hitter. Those battles with the Yankees in the ALCS always wrenched my guts!

      @@Cosmo-Kramer That ought to tell you something about the nature / makeup of committees entrusted with voting on such matters. Anyone with a brain acknowledges Schmidt's greatness; recognizing him as one of the premier ballplayers of his time _overall_ but the fact remains as I stated, the man was routinely handcuffed by grounders sharply hit _right at him_ ; short hops and all.
      Coming up through the ranks my measure of _'what separated the men from the boys'_ in terms of fielding was one's ability to make the aforementioned play smoothly and regularly without incident in other words ...diving to your left or right or leaping to haul one in while perhaps more attention grabbing and impressive from a spectator's standpoint - this caliber of play is certainly more likely to garner headlines or land its "executer" a spot on the highlight reel - however, any reasonably decent athlete , if honest , will concede that the latter ranks among the easiest he'll be called upon to make.

      @Cosmo-Kramer Месяц назад +1

      @@tommyriam8320 I'm from Philly and watched him play his whole career, getting eaten up by balls hit hard right at him was most definitely not "routine". And most of the occasional ones he bungled initially, he managed to recover quickly and still nail the runner at 1st on the strength of his cannon arm. An arm that accounted for so many putouts, not just when diving to his left and right, but also after bare-handing dribblers and bunts that nearly all other 3rd baggers couldn't even grab, let alone make the throw in time.

      @@ORagnar He was also in kind of a race in terms of minimum number of ABs needed to qualify as a legitimate contender for any official batting title/"record" since he had missed so much of the season with injuries. Brett was great at coming back from long spells on the DL without seeming to have lost a step/beat. He brought this "tradition" to new heights in '80 with such hitting prowess and production that he, a one point, threatened to lead the league in RBI while simultaneously failing to log enough plate appearances to have his season-ending BA "count".
