My dad passed in 22’. For 4 years we worked every day doing plumbing. During that time I got to know him as a person rather than a parent, with a full past and history. He told me about how he moved around the country in his 20s w his bell bottoms and boots. After he died I didn’t know what to do I moved across the country and up the easy coast trying to figure out my next move. One day this song came on and I cried like I never had. he was young and on the move once and I am too.

I lost my dad December 21st, 2021. This was one of his favorite songs and we would listen to it often. This version specifically. The pure, raw passion in his voice in this song would almost bring me to tears before I lost my dad. Now it’s hard for me to listen to this at all, but when I do it’s a therapeutic and almost out of body experience. I love you pops. P.S.- I’m a lot like you were;)

There aren't. Deep Purple did go viral with their new release and Aerosmith and others soldier on. Even Neil Young goes live occasionally. Talent is now rare across most genre.
You can find some, in other continents too, I guess. Like this norwegian singer, song writer and record producer, Aurora, who crafts her musical art mostly by herself, as she wishes. Personally, her songs in her albums are not always for me (she's a "pop singer", and I'm mostly metal, with a bit blues, rock, folk, and I've enjoyed Neil Young for about 30 years now), but when it comes to live performances, she's great, especially in acoustic set up. She's not the new Neil Young or Aerosmith, for sure, but there's still some talent on earth, that being said maybe not really in main stream music industry. In exemple among many others here in YT: AURORA Live from COP26 | UMA Entertainment: ruclips.net/video/qHPIPdPhUP0/видео.html She has plenty of live sessions, where she sometimes varies, from slightly to completely, her rendition, as she feels it in the moment. It's worth to dig a bit (here on YT). Maybe you won't like it or her, but at least there're still creativity, talent and genuine renditions, even if it's not that easy to find.
@@Josian-ps7fb We got some new people - Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, lots of country artists are writing crazy good songs and singing them from the heart! Not quite the same, but I think Neil might agree that they're damn good!

Earlier this year I lost my best friend, he was much older than me and I used to say this was my song for him...I'm a lot like he was. Our love for Neil's music was a huge part of our friendship and one of the things that bonded us from the very start. Love you Old man, hope we meet again someday...
Thank you for appreciating it. I was born in 1957 also and I just turned 67. Close to dad and love the music that he loved. I grew up with music from the 40s and 50s and I appreciate everything that I got to do with my dad because my parents died and I wish we had more of those special moments. Thank you for loving your dad.
The song that seems to mirror this one but comes from the point of view of the father is Harry Chapin's song Cat's in the Cradle. In this song, the father realizes that his son has grown up to be like him.
hi, there is another music video the Bernstein tapes that has Neil telling the story of how he wrote the song. he is referring to the old man that lived on the ranch he had bought, and he told the old man he didn't want him to have to leave the ranch and to stay there and live with Neil on the ranch they both then owned, now that is a blessing from one heart to another. Simple Love is goodness. Amen
The same with "Old Friends," by Simon & Garfunkel. Paul writes, "can you imagine us years from today, sharing our park bench quietly. How terribly strange to be 70." They are both 82 now!
My father passed September 22, 1971. My first day of High School, then 10th grade. Life changed, and this song told my story in so many ways. I left school, home, and traveled from L.A. to San Francisco. Grew up quickly, playing my way through time and places… I’m 67 today, and this song still takes me back to where I was then. As with many of his songs, they all seem to connect with people and pieces of times in our lives. I’m a lot like you were’.. Thanks.. Neil

Ah, one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true
Lullabies, look in your eyes
Run around the same old town
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you
I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past
But I'm all alone at last
Rolling home to you
Old man, take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me the whole day through

I lost my dad December 21st, 2021. This was one of his favorite songs and we would listen to it often. This version specifically. The pure, raw passion in his voice in this song would almost bring me to tears before I lost my dad. Now it’s hard for me to listen to this at all, but when I do it’s a therapeutic and almost out of body experience. I love you pops. P.S.- I’m a lot like you were;)
Awesome thanks for sharing
Honestly nobody cares

In exemple among many others here in YT:
AURORA Live from COP26 | UMA Entertainment: ruclips.net/video/qHPIPdPhUP0/видео.html
She has plenty of live sessions, where she sometimes varies, from slightly to completely, her rendition, as she feels it in the moment.
My husband passed away 2 years ago from Cancer and Neil Young was his favorite music. Neil Young brought such joy to him. Thank you Neil Young

I'm 66 and the first time I seen Neil he was solo act at Massey Hall in Toronto, I was 18. When the curtains opened there was Neil and 15 or so guitars on stage. Still one of the best concerts I've ever seen !!

I wasn’t born till the late 70’s but discovered Neil young as a teenager and he is still one of my favourite artists of all time… old man.. what a masterpiece.. ❤❤❤❤
To this day in 2023 I still get goosebumps when ever I play this, now all the old hippies are dying off but we had one hellva good time! Thank you Neil
Heard this the first time at 14. Now at 60, I’ve become that Old Man. And glad I’ve been able to make the journey.
I hope you are all doing well on this crisp October night. Hang in there, there are brighter days ahead.
Neil is a quintessential soundtrack of our lives. So many great albums. God bless this brilliant Canadian gem.
Used to like him but he sold out for a set of establishment knee pads.

Eric, you forgot the brilliant Jackson Browne on that list.
If only he would keep his political views to himself….

Still trying to find my biological dad in this life and holy hell does this song act as a guidance as well as a filler to that void
God bless you and you’ll be OK. I never knew my biological parents and I am 67 years old now. My son found my biological parents only this last year and I really didn’t miss a thing my adopted parents died when they were young and when I was young and, it’s been very hurtful but it’s OK I survived and so will you. Our parents were the greatest but boomers are the coolest..,.. 💕
Earlier this year I lost my best friend, he was much older than me and I used to say this was my song for him...I'm a lot like he was. Our love for Neil's music was a huge part of our friendship and one of the things that bonded us from the very start.
Love you Old man, hope we meet again someday...
In the end we all become them
It's been said below, but it needs to be said again......This has got to be one of the greatest songs ever written.
I played this song to say goodbye to my father. It was a sacred link between us.
Thanks for all, your music is the best way for me to talk to him
Amen.
My Dad was born in 57’ and has this original album. Dad and I still listen to this song all the time. I’m my father’s son, for sure.
I simply can't understand how someone can pick up guitar and a microphone and make this magic.
Coming straight from the soul ❤️
He has a natural beautiful untrained voice. We sure did love him in the 70s. I still do.
The song that seems to mirror this one but comes from the point of view of the father is Harry Chapin's song Cat's in the Cradle. In this song, the father realizes that his son has grown up to be like him.
I lost my mother just before Christmas and I'm still missing her age 93 I'm a pensioner now always loved Neil young music and lyrics 😊
I'm from India, I'm listening to this track back from when I was 12, understood a few words. This songs hits it home, love it more as time passes.
hi, there is another music video the Bernstein tapes that has Neil telling the story of how he wrote the song. he is referring to the old man that lived on the ranch he had bought, and he told the old man he didn't want him to have to leave the ranch and to stay there and live with Neil on the ranch they both then owned, now that is a blessing from one heart to another. Simple Love is goodness. Amen
@@jm1979mx that's so wholesome. Good on Neil for letting the old man stay. It must feel horrible to be uprooted from your home at an old age

My father and I had so many differences, but this song was one thing that brought us together
This has to be the best version. Live at Massey Hall. No banjo, no steel guitar. Just Neil and his six string.
This man was 24 writing this, just goes to show the difference in times
The same with "Old Friends," by Simon & Garfunkel. Paul writes, "can you imagine us years from today, sharing our park bench quietly. How terribly strange to be 70." They are both 82 now!
I’ll love this song and Neil Young forever. I’m 73
Hello, how are you doing today? It’s nice to meet you here.
My god. Now I get it.
My father passed September 22, 1971. My first day of High School, then 10th grade. Life changed, and this song told my story in so many ways. I left school, home, and traveled from L.A. to San Francisco. Grew up quickly, playing my way through time and places…
I’m 67 today, and this song still takes me back to where I was then. As with many of his songs, they all seem to connect with people and pieces of times in our lives.
I’m a lot like you were’..
Thanks.. Neil
