Game story is trash it's like a very bad C list sci fi movie but even cringier, you can't try to mix Kingdom hearts with Ridiculous Kaiju shlt and cringe emotional kiddies parts in a dark / grittier world, it all blends in into a disconnected parody of an inconsistent game, i cringed so much playing this it's painfull to watch how bad the dialogs and story was.

My take on this is Clive is alive and unfortunately Joshua is gone evidence being:
1: Clive Narrates the last part of the story
2: Curse doesn't mean instant death as seen with Cid
3: Side quest with Tomes noted that Clive wants to Pen a book when all this is finish,
4: Book title being Final Fantasy is like what Clive said during last stabby stabby scene.
5: Jill side quest noted that Clive wasnt going to break anymore promises and that the sunrises shows him coming back.
6: Metia star (red star) is a wishing star, it dims because a wish was granted instead of symbolizing Clives life Force
7: Song Moongazing Lyrics narrates Clive coming back to Jill (This was super cool)
8: forgot which exact person said it but they noted Phoneix can mend wounds but not revive, Clive healed Joshua so there isn't a big hole in his chest anymore.
I think they made the ending like this as a reward for people completing the side quests, Kind of like a secret ending to players who did all the contents.

After calming down, I realize this is honestly the best ending we could've gotten (thanks to that post credit scene). On the surface it's obviously a sad ending, but with that post credit scene you can literally decide for yourself what happened. I know people are going to say "copium" but that's how a lot of story endings were done, basically up to the reader/viewer to decide the full conclusion. There's a lot of things that can point to Clive's survival, just because his hand turned to stone doesn't mean he died right there. Remember even Jill got the curse for overdoing it but she's fine now, same with Cid, he would've survived if he didn't constantly pushed himself. The post credit scene is the reason why it's a potential happy ending. We know Clive is known to take over people's names in order to carry on their legacy, that being Cid for example. This time he took his brother's name and wrote a book sharing his and his brother's story for future generations. Why would he write a book of all things? Well that's where certain side quests can be important to the story, the last side quest with Harpocrates we see him telling Clive that after things are done, he should drop his sword and pick up a pen which Clive seemed to like the idea. It truly is up to the player how they want to view the ending, and I love it, especially thanks to the certain side quests and story points we can actually picture the happy ending and fits perfectly with the story.

As an older brother the scenes showing the history with Joshua and Clive had me crying like a bitch. My opinion Clive is for sure dead. Joshua could have survived I think that was Clives final task as the shield. Joshua then wrote the book to tell the story of what happened for generations to tell. After thousands of year humans forget magic and its history and the book became a fairy tale. If Joshua died at the end which I don't think he did cause, why show Clive heal him at the end then Gav wrote the book in Joshuas name. I would love DLC to see more of jill and maybe Joshua if he lived but the story as it was literally perfect. If they both died, then Gav wrote the book in Joshuas name but even that is weird to me cause if he would name the book after anyone it would be more Clive or Cid as those were the men who fought for change and his heroes. I would love DLC to see more of jill and maybe Joshua if he lived but the story as it was literally perfect.

The point of a mature story isn't to just make it as edgy and kill as many character as possible (like what some retards like Cuckman did), but to give the viewers better immersion and enjoyment when they can't predict what will happen to each character's fate, who will prevail and who will perish. FF16 has done this masterfully while still providing super hype, el classico anime moments. I'm sure Clive's story will be widely remembered for a long time to come.

You can easily tell apart who did the last few side quests and who didn't. They sow so much narative about Clive looking forward to his future after all things are done and the symbol of Clive returns to Jill when sunrises through Tome and Jill's quest. Jill keep goes on and on about Clive better saving himself and she'll give up her power for him to do so, not to mention all the promises they made.

Clive is definitely alive, the game devs gave all the clues throughout the story dialogues and especially in the side quests. Everyone's picking up some of the points here and there but to lay out the 7 points that basically prove Clive survived:
    1. The final crying scene directly references the side quest dialogue. When is Jill crying the sun rises and she stops crying. This is after Jill and Clive have told each other how much they mean to one another in one of the side quests. During the side quest she mentioned how she would cry looking up at the stars at night during dark times. She tells him that no matter how sad and dark the night is, the sun will always return at dawn. And that she knows that Clive will always return to her.
    2. Biology: Wolves howl in nature to communicate with their pack mates to tell them where they are and to guide them back. When Cid is dying in front of the group, Torguil whimpers to show remorse and sadness as but actually doesn’t howl even after Cid dies. So the fact that Torgal is howling instead of whimpering is indicative of Clive being alive.
    3. The last thing Clive tells Jill is no more broken promises. He had promised her he would return to her no matter what. And we all know Clive is a man who honors his word.
    4. Clive tells Harpocrates that after his quest/journey is done he will put down the sword and take up the pen
    5. In the final fight with ultima at the end. Ultima tells Clive that 'this resistance is a fantasy he clings to'. Clive tells him that the only one living in a fantasy is ultima and that “this would be his final fantasy” (before Clive finally kills him). In the ending post credits scene, the book is titled “Final Fantasy”. The only one to mention that term was Clive in final battle and he was alone there. So no way Joshua would just happen by coincidence to title it the same thing considering it was based off a isolated conversation between ultima and Clive
    6. When Cid died, Clive takes up his mantle and go by his name to honor the life he gave and what he stood for. So in the secret ending cutscene with the book author saying Joshua Rosfield, this would make perfect sense for Clive to do in order to honor his brothers memory.
    7. If you 100% the game, the secret ending also has one dialogue line during the final fantasy book scene of audio of Clive giving the final narration saying “and that was the end of the journey”. Which is confirmation by itself that Clive lived to chronicle the story.

      Massive cope, Clive is dead.
      1. That's just her hopes and wishes, she concludes WITH THE SUNRISE that Clive won't come back, but that's okay and the sun will still rise.
      2. That's a comically large reach based in reality, not even the defined realm of this fiction
      3. Nah, he lies again, and that's the last time he lies. He's dead and can't keep that promise
      4. Harpocrotes takes up that pen after Clive dies to tell the story Clive constantly retold him throughout the game
      5. Once again an insane reach, the mental gymnastics are admirable.
      6. This would make sense for whoever the NEXT "Cid" would be, possibly Gav, maybe Mid, possibly even Jill. Clive is definitely dead here, whereas when Cid died, it made sense for his SURVIVOR Clive to take up the mantle and namesake.
      7. There's not a "secret" ending, it ends the same every time. Clive on a beach being consumed by the curse saying "and thus ends our journey" just like he says "and thus does our journey begin" in the beginning.
Once again, massive cope, maybe a DLC will definitely say otherwise. But it's left open for anyone to believe what they will. Just saying, all of your reasons are flawed through and through.

I honestly think the ending was perfect, though I did figure it'd be contentious. This is all my personal interpretations:
Clive surrenders himself because he knew with him alive that the world would still be chained to it's past of magic/dominants/eikons, and by dying all of it will be relegated to the past. It's very bitter since throughout the entire story everyone tells him that he needs to save himself rather than others, but in the end he's not able to keep that promise or those of him returning. Fully embracing his role as the world's shield, for better or for worse. This also calls back to Cid's goal of creating a world where bearers could die on their own terms, a world Clive initiates by doing so himself.
The red moon is Metia, which from the very beginning Jill has prayed to multiple times for Clive's safe return. It going out was a symbol that those prayers wouldn't be answered. More than anything, this confirms at least to me that Clive is definitely dead and I don't see them betraying the theme of the story by him surviving.
If you do Dion's side quest it expands a lot on his (very expected) death. Him telling Harpocrates that he'll only deserve the flower when he returns, which I interpreted as him meaning a flower placed on his grave, shows he was fully expecting to die. His death imo didn't need to be flashy or a huge focus, silent and lonely in repentance.
When I initially finished I assumed the book was written by Joshua during his travels as he went out to learn more about Ultima or sometime before them going to Origin, but that's the only thing I'm not fully sure on and I don't think interpreting it as him surviving is wrong.
Having it end with no closure was as true to the narrative theming as could be, wouldn't make sense to have a happy ending with how cruel their lives were. Reminds me of Tokyo Ghoul's manga ending where the author said it'd be a tragedy, and then at the end everyone becomes friends and they live happily ever after. Also the bit at the every end before the credits is the saying "the night is darkest before the dawn" in literal form.

I dont think its as open ended as people think. When clive heals joshua it was just to clean his wounds. Similarly how you would close someones eyes who is dead so they dont look crazy while they are dead. Clive lives because in the ending side quests he mentions he will take up the pen when he puts down the sword. Hinting that he wrote the book.
    1. He most likely wrote it in Joshuas name to honor him and immortalize him also he was the main reason his journey even began.
    2. The only other possible outcome.. albeit would be less gratifying if it were this outcome.. was that the whole thing was just a story and never happened and someone named joshua rosfield wrote themselves into their own story. Probably unlikely the 2nd option i think it would take away a lot from the ending and emotion from the ending and the story as a whole for that to be the ending.
So I am like 99% sure the ending is option 1. Jill even mentions in a side quest that when the sunrises she always knows Clive will come back to her thats why she smiles at the end. There is too many hints that flesh out the ending for Clive to be dead and the story to actually have happened.

The only snag to your ending is the moment Clive used his power all magic ceased to exist. Clive destroyed the structure just after walking away from Joshua (so no time for Joshua to have gotten up / escaped) the only reason Clove washed up on the beach (instead of being destroyed in the explosion) is because he was the vessel. Having said that, in the scene with Jill / sunrise - you can see a boat coming in from the distance. So I would presume Clive and Joshua managed to survive somehow - though I feel like the self sacrificing message is far more powerful instead of the typical happy ending. To lose Joshua after all of that seems cruel but that’s practically the premise of the game. (But so is the ability to prevail) FF games rarely have a clear-cut ending, so this one was no surprise. Out of it all, Torgal howling hit me the hardest.. I’m a huge dog / animal lover, and there aren’t too many things stronger than the bond between a dog and their owner. Do all the sidequests. That explicitly spells it out to you that clive survived....just with one less arm. Him healing joshua even though he was already dead was him keeping his promise to tarja that joshua come back with no wounds, even if dead. The pheonix can't bring back the dead...only heal surface wounds. Joshua was dead for a long while....clive just wanted to keep his promise an heal the hole in joshuas chest. The last few side quests explicitly spell out what clive is gonna do with jill once this is over. They literally wanna leave to a new continent and start a life together. Clive most definently wrote the book in the ending under joshuas name as only he knows the full story of the whole game, no one else. Thats why clive narrates the ending monologe of the game. With hypocrates quill that is given to you in one of the last sidequests explicitly.
They did do the ending in a way that it can be interpreted both ways though depending on if you did the sidequests or not.

Lots of speculation over the ending. I can only take it at face value. Clive dies creating a better world for everyone. Jill can sense it, she knows he's dead so she starts crying. When the sun comes up, it cheers her up a bit , it makes her realize that Clive sacrificed himself but achieved his goal of making a better world for them and she shouldn't be all doom and gloom about it. You can try to speculate a happy ending but I think it's actually a pretty cruel ending. The ending with the book is anyone's guess. Could be Joshua had been writing a book before he died. But either way, it's probably hundreds of years later and humanity lives a normal live and magic is just a thing of fairy tales.

I am in the opposite camp. If you have done the sidequests (Joshua's and Jill's) there are some precise lines about seeing hope when the "dawn rises" after "night has fallen" The star, Metia going out can be interpreted as the star granting Jill her wish for Clive to return safely. Notice how Jill cries when it is night but smiles when the dawn rises.
I think they devs left it ambiguous, so if you didn't do those sidequests, you would interpret it as sadness and hope for a new world Clive, Joshua, and Dion sacrificed themselves to create, but if you did you can see it as a hopeful future that Clive lives and settles down with Jill.

      1. The lyrics of the song (Moongazing) narrate Clive’s return from Jill’s POV.
      2. Clive asking Tomes (I think) for a pen to write a book about the story once Ultima is defeated.
      3. Clive promising Jill to never break a promise ever again, and he promised her to return.
There’s also how Clive narrates the ending of the story as if he was telling the story to someone else, but this can be seen as just artistic, however he never takes the role of the narrator during the game so it seems very much deliberate.
Plus plus, the name of the book being Final Fantasy but only Clive ever mentioned that name (during Ultima fight) so unless Jote or Gav knew about it somehow, they couldn’t have come up with the exact same name.

If that's the case and Clive lived and all that, they should release some DLC or something to clarify. If Clive lived then he must of come back and settled with Jill. Think of it this way, game performs poorly means that the ending is just the ending and Clive’s end of story, we’re left to speculate what happens to him, on the other hand, game performs greatly means that we’re likely getting DLC, which in turn means that Clive is probably alive, by leaving it ambiguous, the doors for whatever will happen next are also left open. I don't think thats where Clive died, throughout the game he never showed any signs of the curse affecting him from using magic, what caused him to suffer now is using Ultima's power which are on another level. Theres every chance he keeps living as the curse only spreads if magic is continued to be used.

I really dislike that ending... the game was absolutely perfect 11/10 until that ending. I love the characters in this game so much, especially Jill and Torgal and seeing them sad at the end really left me emotionally devastated.
Seriously, I´ve been depressed all week long because of this... why not give me a fucking happy ending after dedicating 65 hours of my heart and soul to this story and characters? It´s honestly the only part of this game that I really didn´t like.
This is definetely one of my favourite games ever, but unfortunately one that I probably won´t be playing again for a long time... I was sure I´d play it again on NG+ and FF difficulty but after this ending, IF I do it will be in the future after I can come to terms with what happened, because right now I´m emotionaly destroyed.

Theory: Joshua died, Clive took his name like he did on Cid's. There's a sidequest when he said when his quest with Ultima is over, he's gonna write a book too. And that "Final Fantasy" is derived from what he said literally to Ultima.

  • @TheLQGaming
    @TheLQGaming Год назад

    Nice video.
I think Clive is alive, he narrates the game including at the end just before the credits roll - he can't narrate the story in past tense if he is dead. (Unless they do some weird time travel thing in a future DLC a la Endwalker).
Joshua's fate is a lot more ambiguous. It is more likely he is dead for real but given Clive had Phoenix and Ultima's powers at that point and given Joshua's spirit could still have been in tact through the Phoenix abilities that Clive had during the final boss fight, there is a chance he may have made it also.
Few issues with the logic of the story though:
    1. Why didn't Joshua just release Ultima out of his body if he knew what was about to happen, or why wasn't this discussed sooner? From the moment he contained Ultima it was a matter of when something tragic would happen rather than if. The group could have tried to do something about it beforehand rather than let it get to the point where Ultima was forcibly removed from Joshua and causing a mortal wound.
    2. Ultima raised the Origin into the middle of the air. Why didn't Clive use Ultima's abilities to lower Origin back to Valisthea's surface before destroying the Mothercrystal? Without magic abilities after the odds of either brother surviving were slim, having fallen all the way to Valisthea's surface and with all the rocks/crystals falling down also. Not once did Dion/Joshua/Clive think when planning this how were they getting back.
    3. Why didn't Clive make sure that Joshua was alive after 'resurrecting' him. A few places, even the Wikipedia plot description say that Joshua was resurrected but we never saw Joshua wake up. Even if Joshua did wake up he wouldn't have his abilities and would be stuck on a soon-to-be destroyed Origin in the middle of the sky.
I think Joshua is likely dead, and his character arc was complete at that stage also (besides maybe a potential romance with Jote). But I wouldn't say that for certain.

He’s not 100% dead cause if you do the final jill side quest it says that the rising sun symbolizes Clive returning to jill, hence the ending of a rising sun.
Also Cid lived for years with a petrified arm so the hand does really count as a death blow

      He is not dead xD
Petrification stops at his hand, cause he tried to use magic after using up everything that made him Mythos/Logos and Ultimas power.
Also the post-credit cutscene is the biggest evidence, we begin and end the game with Clives narration, and theres even a book about this.
The only one who knows what fully happend is Clive. Joshua was passed out/dead for the finale of the fight and no one else was there.
Clive probably wrote the book in Joshuas name so his brother would not be forgotten.

Cid lived with his arm in that state for a while because it was a slow progression due to using magick. Clive used SO MUCH magick that his fingertips started petrified and then in real time it spread to his entire hand. He even drops his arm to the sand as though its too difficult to hold it up. His line about not even his body being enough to house ultima's power is kinda the nail in the coffin/clue that his body will fail if he uses that magick. He also cast a spell so powerful that he erased magic, eikons, the blight, and crystals from the world ( remember ultima was going to cast a similar spell with all that power to re-write reality for himself) and set his "terms" as he cast it. There was no stopping the curse from taking him. Joshua doesn't revive because "not even the power of the pheonix can bring back the dead", Clive just repairs the body in an act of desperation. Metia blinking out also kinda signifies his death because Jill always would wish on it to keep him safe and this time the star didnt remain burning bright. I think her reaction to the sunrise was more and acceptance, he didnt return to her, but he saved the world and left them a world they could thrive in. She isn't smiling at the end, she looks like she's trying to put on a brave face and be strong in light of what just happened (The facial expressions are real good in the cutscenes, she looks like she's fighting a frown).

Phoenix’s power couldn’t revive a dead person, it can only heal someone. So Clive passed away in my opinion, and since all crystals are now gone, and Clive used his last shot to burn everything into ashes, so magic, crystals stuffs no longer exist and became a fairy tale written in a book for the human in the future.
