      It's a tricky one for me to grade, critically for its issues (pacing, lack of rpg elements, inconsistent quality of MSQs/SQs, minor lack of party dynamics, repetitive mobs) I want to give it an 8 but that almost feels wrong because some parts were so monumental, epic was their bread and butter and they set a new standard for large scale boss fights. I can't in good conscience put FF16 in the company of other 8/10 games because it felt much more special than that. If I step away from the general action rpg rubric and look at the overall experience ie the Eikon fights (which sometimes exceeded 10), music, performance, story beats (the prologue, Benedikta, Cid's arc, Dion), the underlying themes (fate, brotherhood, duty) and overall narrative I have to score it higher. Overall 9/10.

Like Satellite was an ability I barely used but eventually I realized you can shoot the blasts from the satellite while in Megaflare stance which made it a lot more interesting. I also started using the long-range fire counter attack (Flamewave or something?) a lot. I gained a big apprecaition for all the abilities except Rime and Earthern Fury which I never found a way to not have be complete trash. I kind of liked them removing the QTE buttons but there are a couple times where it is really ambiguous if you're supposed to dodge or attack lol.

    don't understand people that criticize a final fantasy game for having too many cutscenes. A Final fantasy game SHOULD have many cutscenes. Thats why 15 was so disappointing, that game was so unfinished it didn't have even half as many cutscenes as this game. In fact it had so little cutscenes they had to patch in some cgi scenes from the movie that came out to fix some gaps in the story.

    • @Jamgcy

      Your comment perfectly sums up my problem with the game - yes, some of the sequences are incredible, VISUALLY. But for me and many others that's not why we play games, so no matter the spectacle if the rest doesn't feel "right" then it doesn't elevate the game. So no, it's not glossing over the fact, but it's simply not the main focus for many.

    • @Metranomix
      @Metranomix 11 месяцев назад +7

      @@Sakisasvictorianmask I just finished FF16 today, so I can give my fresh thoughts. Really enjoyed the combat, and I'm glad they didn't go turn based or even a hybrid system. While I enjoy turn based games like the Persona series, the RPG elements of this game weren't strong enough to utilise that kind of battle / party system. So the game plays well into its core DMC strength in that sense.
      I also REALLY preferred the more mature tone with 16, and I was able to connect with Clive way more because of it. As a result, I was quite invested in the story. Some pacing issues aside, my only critique is that I wish the game could be condensed a little. My save clocks in at 75 hours (I did all the side quests!), but I imagine with the fat trimmed it could probably be around a more comfortable 40 hour experience.

    Final Fantasy XVI is my personal GOTY of 2023. Between Final Fantasy XVI & Final Fantasy VII Remake, this is a seriously brilliant return to form for such a legendary enduring series. It wasn't perfect though, the RPG mechanics were way too light and there should've been more Character Development and lastly there should've been alot more exploring as Valisthea is such an amazing compelling world that I really really wish you could've explored alot more ala Witcher 3's world but overall Final Fantasy XVI was simply spectacular. Really happy that Asmon loved it.
    I'm definitely rooting for Final Fantasy XVI to win GOTY although it definitely has some very strong formidable competition in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Hogwarts Legacy, the upcoming Armored Core 6 (which I've no doubt is going to be amazing) and now Baldur's Gate 3.

I remember FF9, FF6 and FF7, those do have cutscenes but it has some flavour in it, we felt the excitement from it, like a kid on adventure, thats why it kept us engage and not feel sleepy, but 16 the story at times are just too mellow, yes its dark but it felt mellow at times, alas the feeling of boring and sleepy. Yes, they do have huge combat effect in the old game, but the old game is Turn Based, so you dont mind the huge effects.. this new 16 game is Action game, therefor the huge effects is a nuisance, since you cant dodge most of enemy attack due to you got blinded by these huge effect, its unnecessary in action games.. I mean, look at FF7R, they did it better with the skill effects, you still can see the enemy attack in FF7R, thats how they should do it in 16. I hope they do well in 17, they forgot to put the feeling of adventure into this new fantasy world, FF series needs that just like the Golden age of FF where everything felt fresh and amazing. I understand the feeling of 16 is more like FF Tactics, but also that is why FF9/6/7 is always at top 3 and not Tactics. Dont get me wrong, I love all of Squaresoft FF, I grew up with it, but it is what it is. As much as I love FF, Baldur's Gate 3 is GOTY for sure.. I think Clive lived. Because its the same thing he did with Cid. He wanted to pay tribute to his name by doing that in order for no one to forget his name whenever he finished his ultimate goal. Same with Joshua who is his brother. He loved him dearly and wanted a way to pay tribute to his name and what they went through in order for people to onow about it. So, he wrote a book about their entire life's journey and experiences and named it "Final Fantasy". Maybe because of the words spoken in his last fight with ultima stuck with him. Plus he did also tell Harpo at some point that he would be looking forward to the day he'll drop the sword and pick up the pen. He also told Joshua that their Eikons and story would be a thing of the past since magic would cease to exist at the point if they were succesful.

Not only are there far less of them (FF7R has 25 side quests total and are much better paced than 16 which has 76), there is actual gameplay variety in 7Rs. 16 sorely lacks variety on all fronts. its time to look at things objectively instead of fanboying for the yoshi p cult

      Speak for yourself.
      The fact that are more side-quest in FF16 shouldn’t be a bad thing.
      I get more time to play the story based game I payed for this way.
      As for the “tedious fetch quest” people keep talking about….
      You ROLE PLAY as Clive (it’s HIS story).
      (Think fetch quest hypothetically in real life: if you wanted to go out to the bar or whatever this weekend, but your car didn’t have gas; you would have to give yourself a tedious side quest of ‘filling your car up with gas’, before continuing your main story of heading to the bar or whatever.)
      You have to do the little tasks before you tackle the big ones
      The last few side quest of FF16 are some of the best the game had to offer. Yet many people missed them because they lacked the patience of a “tedious” quest.
      And if you’re gonna bring up FF7R, then at least bring up Madame M when she says “good things come to those who work, and in ways that just might surprise you.”
      (Also face it, FF7R had its fair share of fetch quests, and it did not have as much bounties at like 16 did.
      Soooo “sorely lack gameplay variety”…. What?

    I was a bit unsatisfied with the ending, tbh. Personally, I would have preferred a happy ending where at least Clive makes it back. That said, I'm not opposed to a sad or bittersweet ending. My issue is that it felt... much too brief. I think the game does an excellent job at endearing us to some of the side characters and I was kinda left wanting in that regard. I would have preferred a sort of "where are they now" kind of ending, sorta like what FFXII did.
    I also didn't really much care for the after-credits ending. Yes, it's nice to know that humanity seemingly endures in the future but like... I don't care for two random kids playing at Ifrit and Phoenix. I care about Joshua, and Clive, and Jill, and Gav, and Mid, and Torgal, and Tarja, and the rest of the Hideaway people... so yeah, would have liked a bit more closure in that regard.
    All that said, I still very much enjoyed the game. I liked the combat and though I think Ultima felt weak as a main villain, I liked the overall story. I think my only gripes were really in the sidequests. Mechanically, the sidequests kinda suck. You can certainly see the MMO pedigree of the developers showing through the tired "go talk to this dude, now talk to this chick, now talk to this other dude" quest design. I do think they do a good job at world-building, at least.

I'm relatively new to FF having only played FF7 remake, FF16 and I'm currently 6 hours into FF10 (and I plan on trying FF15 at some point since I bought it years ago but never did anything past the tutorial). From an outside of the series norm, as a standalone experience, I thought it was probably an 8.5/10, since I don't think I have enough experience to give it a proper rating as a Final Fantasy Series game. It was fun enough and impacted me enough that I'm sad it's over and can only hope for a DLC. Currently trying to fill the gap with playing through 10.

    It's baffling that so many people are wrong about the ending. Harpocrates says Clive’s pen will write the story of his journey, people are taking that as Clive living and writing the book, which is not true. Clive uses Ultima’s power after absorbing it to revive Joshua thus keeping his promise and oath to him as his shield and In turn the revived Joshua writes the book with Clive’s pen to make the first part come true.

    • @jaybee4288
      @jaybee4288 Год назад +5

      @lavari again that’s your interpretation. Mine can be that they both died and that scene is the future, not that the game was a book. Neither interpretation can be proven or disproven by the way it was written. So it’s silly to speculate on it or try to push views on others. There’s no deeper meaning or evidence, they simply wrote two endings and let you choose which one you wanted.

    • @punchykarma6685
      @punchykarma6685 Год назад +1

      I honestly like that it's up to each individuals interpretations. I think in the writers mind there is a true ending, but to us we don't know. Personally I think that Clive does live and writes the book since it is heavily foreshadowed if you do the side quests. He also is narrating at the beginning and the end of the game. The star of metia that fades could either mean that Jills wish came true that Clive will come back to her since that's what she was always wishing for or it could mean the aether is finally gone hence the star fading out. Clive most likely took Joshuas name just like he did Cids to honor him which is why the book is written by Joshua. And I know people will say Clive is dead because of the curse, but there is no more aether in the world which means there is no more curse. Also, the sunrise could be symbolism for Clive being alive and coming back to Jill. If you have played past FF games the sunrise always has symbolism in FF games. Now on the other hand you could also say Clive is dead as there is lots of dialogue that hints at it and that when the sun rises that is Clive which means Metia did grant Jills wish of Clive being with her. As for the book, Joshua does say that the undying are recording all of his events or other people compiled stories together to make the story. And finally you could just say it was just a story and the events never actually happened. There are so many interpretations you could have which I think is cool.

Seeing the flashbacks of Joshua and Clive when they were young was so sweet, and seeing the scene where Clive died/goes unconscious on the beach, and then everyone crying, just added to the feels. I know that some will say the game wasn't great, and some will say that it was awful, but to me it was one of the best experiences I had in a game. I really wish there's more involving this world in the future. This was also my first final fantasy game if you exclude final fantasy 14, and I'm excited to get into the other games in my spare time.

    I find it truly genius and innovative how they made the ending change from a sad to a positive ending by doing the side quests without changing the cutscenes of the ending themselves but instead adding perspective.
    For those not aware, Clive survived and wrote the book that we see at the end (whose logo on the front is the same as the emblem of the Hideaway and the mark left on Cid’s grave), which we then hear him narrate both at the start of the game and at the end.
    There are plenty of independent yet supporting evidence that proves it (and some clever details that show why the book could not have been written by someone else independent of the story).
