Jay with the purchase of a new snowmobile, have you given some thought to building a small outbuilding to house the ski-doo? Make it with doors on both ends to drive in and drive out. Add to that with the new heater buddy, insulate the shed so you can turn that heater on and heat up your new snowmobile a bit before starting it on those -30 plus bitter cold nights. I know your building an new addition on the cabin, so lots going on right now, but the new snow machine is a major investment and a small shed to protect it and provide a way to apply some heat will save you some grief and is worth it in my opinion. By the way, we here in Maine have a saying "if you like to ride a snowmobile, buy a Ski-Doo, if you like to work on a snowmobile, buy an Arctic Cat" :-)

I took my family to Cancun on Dec 19 - 26 to spend X-mas in the tropics, just got back a few days ago. While there, I watched Jay Legere on our hotel's 65 inch screen and my family (including a 15 year old teen daughter got hooked). Each day after excusions (snorkeling in Cancun bay, driving a speed boat through mangroves, swimming with turtles at Akumal or Cenotes cave snorkeling), they wanted to come back and watch this channel. Crazy. I explained the incredible footage, the amount of work to set up each shot (including drone flybys), the skillful editing, super peaceful musical interludes and the fact that Jay doesn't dwell on a topic too long that makes the videos interesting. They are both subscribing now. It is really the editing and patience he exhibits and quirky sayings that really catches the audience and gets them hooked. Incredible effort for each video in general.

Just a heads up before connecting the 20lbs tank (or bigger 4:26 ) to your buddy heater, install the buddy filter. Your jets will get plugged if you don’t.

  • @SharonLeis
    @SharonLeis 2 дня назад +8

Jay, these heaters are great. My husband and I purchased 7 of them along with propane tanks for a homeless camp in Kitchener, Ontario. They are not ideal for a tent, but at -30C it saved a lot of lives. There were up to 15 people sleeping in the tents. They had open fires, so this was safer. Keep warm.
Another suggestion, get yourself a shorter splitting stump. I lived in Fort McMurray for 7 years, in a mobile home with 1 1/2" walls. Burned 10 bush cord of wood which we cut ourselves. I did the splitting and stacking on the truck. At the cold temps you are working in, it shouldn't be that much work. Love your channel. The crunch of the snow (coldest day was -50C) reminds me that it is a dry cold unlike Southern Ontario where it is damp.

I don't know where you live, but where I live in Canada it is called a bush cord or standard whatever you like. We had a 3000 sq ft house and heated it with a wood stove. I see by your name you are a wood person so you know the fun of cutting, splitting, stacking and then burning it.

Even with your new sled having a new battery, the secret to cold starting engines in the cold is warming up the battery. If you turn on the lights it will draw low power from the battery and help it warm up. That way it won't slow drag when trying to rotate the starter. Been doing that for 30 years and it helps tremendously.

    • @Dewkeeper
      @Dewkeeper 2 дня назад +6

You’ll love your Ski-Doo. It’s a power house and can pull a lot of weight. Glad to see you make a new outhouse seat. We’ve been using pink or blue board for decades for seats. As far as keeping your floor warmer on the new addition, the pink foam board you used for your outhouse. Cut and place between each floor joist. We doubled up foam board between each giving us 4 inches of insulation and then put our 3/4” plywood down. To prevent rodents we used 1/4 inch hardware cloth which is like metal screen on the bottom of floor joist to close it all in.

Jay, I just wanted you to know we really love tuning in to your channel..
Just good content period, humble down to earth and honestness.. Well done!
I just started a mini cabin with my father, we have talked about it for 30yrs. We even cut, all our own lumber and milled it all on our sawmill. I wish I had more footage of it.. I just used my phone and posted “ shorts”. And now…. lol… have gained an appreciation for how much effort goes in to making an actual video, and edit it all… goodnesssss….
This Chanel has been a great inspiration to go and try new things… and challenge yourself….
Make those visions we dream of take shape…. And thank God that we can do these things, and be blessed enough too be able too..
It’s been a life lesson for me, building a cabin...
    It has shown me
what matters the most in life… I don’t think I need to tell you, but it gives you time to elevate “life”.
For myself…. It’s spending time with the ones we love, trying to bring these vision, goals, dreams, challenges, in life to fruition… And most of all… Time……. It is the most valuable thing we have, and no amount of money will ever buy back 5 more minutes… enjoy it… and help who we can along the way…
    God bless you Jay…
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year..
    East coast New Brunswick..

I work for an insulation company in Ontario, built a cabin with my dad.
If you can get more of the insulation you put for your toilet seat, and stick it between the joists, that’d be the easiest and best insulation.
The stuff you put down is a good heat reflector, but since it’s on the underside, heat rises, I don’t think it’s going to do much.
If it wasn’t for the mice/squirrels etc, I’d just use batt insulation like you’d do in the walls, but I can see why you wouldn’t want to do that.
    Cheers

A cover over the snow machine at night will help a lot ! Very nice machine ! Maybe a low amp battery charger that you could put on over night when you plan on using the next day .

This is a great video Jay! Love the new snowmobile. You should make sure you use a CO detector with that heater and make sure your tent is well ventilated. Get to fresh air immediately if you get drowsy or experience a headache!

Would you not build a quick and easy shead for the snow mobile to keep it from the cold and ice can use the new heater you got to warm it up before you go out on it

Living off grid has many challenges. There are lots of off grid videos where one can find and discover ways of getting things done that don't cost much so you can figure out what works best for you. When splitting wood, if the ax gets stuck push it down to remove then turn the log over and hit it again because of the internal knots. Thanks for sharing and have a grand day.

Best way to cut XPS foam is to score it with a xacto-blade about halfway thru and just snap it in half. Kinda like when dealing with drywall.
    Great vid as always.

Jay when you get ready to do the framing of walls each stud put a mark on the floor showing where the studs are inside and outside so when you do siding you know where studs and drywall . Always mark the rafters on side of top plat so you have a guide line. Drywall the ceiling first then the walls. When you get to run wiring in the walls make sure you get a metal plate to go over where you draw your holes through the wall so you don't screw or nail through the wire you have put in. For your power into the Cabin I'd dig an 24 inch deep trench from the generator to the cabin put 2 90 degree rigid 90s coming out of ground wrapped in 10mil tape 4 raps per inch 3/4 or 1inch PVC will do.

A tip to keep in mind when taking things apart that you'll need to put back together: Mark each piece with a number and letter at points where they come together. That way you'll be able to put things back in the same place easily. Your floor was small enough it wasn't necessary, but for a bigger project you'll save a lot of time. For example. At the board corners where they came together put a 2A:3A on one corner and a 2B:3B at the other corner (the number represents the board and the letter represents the corner). That way you know where those two sheets come together and the proper orientation. Getting everything back the way it was means the holes for the screws will be in the same places, right above the joists.
I'd consider putting a temporary skirt around the deck when you get a chance. Trapping still air underneath will help insulate the floor too. Maybe some sort of velcro strips attached to the deck framing to keep a piece of canvas in place around the sides and front. Easy to put on and remove, yet effective at keeping the air underneath trapped inside when it gets breezy outside.

    Being a Northern Canuck myself.
Swinging the chunk of wood over your head to split is a bad idea.
I'm old and learned my lesson doing that and getting smoked
When i stick the axe like that in a block.
I have next to the. chopping block.
I have a 3 pound hand sledgehammer and a fallers wedge.
When I jam the axe I stick wedge next to stuck axe. One or two whacks with 3 pound.
    Done
    Enjoy the Winter Bud. 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Fab. As always. Please don’t move your stove to the new living area and then close it off with doors, curtains, etc. The rest of the cabin will freeze. Open plan is the only practical solution if you’re not keeping a heat source in the kitchen area that will feed heat upstairs.

It’s too late now, Jay, but you need to stagger your plywood on your floor joist(and on rafters also )sort of like laying brick. You put a 8’ sheet down, run that row then on next row you would cut 4 foot foot off of your first sheet and then a full 8 foot sheet of plywood and finish out with a half sheet. You are staggering each row where the joints don’t line up. Then finish with whatever takes you to the end of the floor. That add strength and makes the floor more rigid. Not sure if I am making sense but I would suggest using it for sure when you do your decking on the roof. I hope I’m helping out. I’ve done this kind of work for 45 years.
