I remember when the Just A Boy album came out I bought it and it didn't leave my turntable for at least 6 months. It's still one of the best albums ever produced with its wide range of hits and its unique style. Leo Sayer should be remembered as one of the greats.
I was 17. My school friends dad ran an independent record company. One satday,James told us all to go to a Hull Uni resi in Cottingham. James had a stash of free tickets. I only wanted to get drunk. Non of us knew why we were there. Then the lights went off and a spotlight Appeared. Under it Leo Sayer,in the clown gear,...sang The Dancer. I'll never forget it. Thanks James's dad!!

One of the most hauntingly beautiful and insidiously depressing songs, ever. He's another musical genus. Saw him live in a small venue in the mid 70s and he was superb. He even wore this costume.
Why is "The Show Must Go On" at over 1 million views but this one (and other songs from this televised performance) only stands at 300,000? Man....when I saw the first clip of this performance, you bet I wanted to see the rest of it!!!! I watched every single song from this show. All the songs from this show should have over a million views each!

yes, looking back now at this it was most incredibly strange, surreal, i guess. tis very very solemn and not exactly high entertainment. god knows what people must have made of it all! but i recall listening to this in my teenage bedroom and being transported deep into myself. and it helped me believe that there was soul and meaning in the world and not just happy clappiness. his voice is incredibly high and seems completely effortless too. a beautiful song and i suspect he was a beautiful soul. or still is.? but i think all the hits had a definite sorrowful edge and pathos if you listen to them properly.

I remember seeing him in newcastle in the seventies. He sat and sang that song. It was beautiful. You could have heard a pin drop in the audience. Mesmerising and faultless. I've never forgotten it.

He used to call on a big house in an upmarket avenue in the town. When he did, a girl who lived there used to invite him in for tea. She was a beautiful dance student hoping to be a ballerina. He admits he was secretly in love with her. On her summer break she went travelling and worked as a dancer in a disco in Switzerland (this would be very early 70s I guess). She was in a steel cage over the dance floor performing when the cable broke and the fall broke her neck, killing her. I saw him tell this tale in an interview made about 12/15 years back . It brings the whole song to life and I think he is still grief stricken about her.
I remember about ten years ago my dad asked me what record he should get me for my birthday and I said silverbird by leo sayer and he laughed. My dad is a big music fan and loves pink floyd, bob dylan, jimi hendrix, etc, but leo sayer doesn't seem to be taken very seriously. He listened to the album and had to admit it's a masterpiece lol
In the 70's lost count how many times me, my sister Alison Ruddock, and our friend Eileen Slattery went to see him live in concert. He was a real showman in those years with some fab songs. Happy memories.
This song takes me right back to my childhood, I can still remember where the scratches used to be in the record, my mum and dad loved the silver bird and just a boy album, now I do too. Pity they didn't love each other so much. Bless up xx

A friend who was visiting Australia sent me a photo of this poster for Leo Sayer's last concert before COVID, I choked up a little at having missed another chance to see him live.

Those first 2 albums, Silverbird and Just A Boy, must be 2 of the most under-rated albums of all time.
