There are lots of ways to shift your chain on the market. Lots of mtb, gravel and road specific groupsets. The problem is it is very difficult to get them all working nicely. That’s where products from Paul Components and Microshift come in.
What if you want to run 12 speed friction shifting. This is where Microshift can help.
In this video I take a 12 speed indexed/friction shifter and move it to the dropbar Salsa Fargo.

Have used microshift thumb shifters (2x8) on my commuter for many years, they work perfectly.

It's a shame the mounts costs more than just getting a new pair of shifters.

And they don’t make them anymore. But I think other brands may do. Eg Velo Orange, dia compe etc.

Thanks for this video. What brake levers are you using?

What have you been using more between the two? And what do you like using better, the thumb position shifter or the bar end position?

Umm tricky. I like them both.
Barend pros: when in the drops you can shift nice and easy without moving your hand s as bad use the palm of the hand to move the shifter down gears.
Barend cons: On flared out drop bars the stick out at a angle and catch on walls etc when leaning the bike. In a crash they are vulnerable.

On the flats pro: easy to shift using your thumb or the top of your finger. The cable is external of your bar tape so easier if you are a constant bike fiddler like me to swap new things on and off.
On the flat cons: If you use a bar bag it might interfere if the bag sits close to the bars. They take up real estate on the bar if you also have a lot of other things like bells, phone mounts etc.
I think if I had bars that did not flare out it would be bar end. If using flared out drops I would have them on the tops if I have room.

I've got the Microshift 2x11 bar end shifters and used them on the ends and also with the Paul thumbies like "Ridin Bicycles". Its tricky to decide which one I like most. I think I prefer the bar end position because two thumbies that are 31.8 end up being close to the stem and get in the way of each other for cable routing. 26mm versions will be better as can go further along the bars - assuming they are wide bars and leave hold space on the tops. I might try bar end for my 2x left shifter and the paul thumbie for my 11 speed right shifter next. Shift accuracy is better with the thumbies due to straightforward cable routing.

Yes on drop bars the 31.8 use up a lot of bar space. I have changed most of my bars to flat bar so they are find on the bars near the grips. My daily commuter is still drop bar but that has downtube shifters which I love because they look so cool, I think how all bicycles should look. 😀

Paul components does not offer a thumbie for road version of microshift bar end shifters.

Hiya, sorry for misunderstanding you what do you mean by road version. Cheers

If you take the index out of the question is there any reason you couldn't use this shifter on and derailer in friction mode?

I only use this shifter in friction mode on a variety of different derailleurs from different brands. 👍🏽

could this be setup so that you can shift from the hoods?

Not that I am aware of. Bar end shifters work really well from the drops.
