I got this welded on last night, decided to keep the set screws, just had to cut that long one down. If you weld one on yourself, I did the welding in three steps, and let it have a break to cool. I was thinking it wouldn't be good for the bearings in the knuckle to get too hot.
@@91MustangLX Right, if things go to plan, which they seldom do lately, MIB should be rolling in March. Planning to take some junk to machine shop at the end of this month to get it ready to put together.
This is ironic because literally just today I machined the short section that slides into the factory steering column out of 3/4" double D shaft. I milled the taper, the trough in one side and popped a hole in it for the through bolt. I bought 2 of the exact same knuckles you have off ebay also. One is 3/4" double D on both sides, the other is 3/4" double D on one side and 9/16" 26 spline on the other. I wish I had seen this video a week ago, it might've saved me some coin. I never thought about just chucking the factory piece up in the mill and making it work. I'm using a Flaming River manual rack also. Good stuff!
The rack is solid mounted to the car. The steering column is also mounted solid with no adjustment. Did you measure the length of the shaft before you cut the rag joint off? How do you know the finished shaft is the right length?
LOL!! I know, but the rack I bought for poodle pecker came with two new bellows kits, and they seemed like really decent quality, so found another set for this one.
Knuckle, this is for the manual rack. www.ebay.com/itm/9-16-26-X-3-4-DD-Universal-Steering-U-Joint-Manual-Ford-Mustang-Hot-Rod/312740969419?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D7b06727ade794b8fa97ed793e9cc26a5%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D152953601610%26itm%3D312740969419%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Ae4bef9a4-2ee9-11ea-b9e5-74dbd180ed84%7Cparentrq%3A706e36a416f0abd8ec5a3e39ff8f414c%7Ciid%3A1

Very cool video David.
The rack is solid mounted to the car.
The steering column is also mounted solid with no adjustment.

How do you know the finished shaft is the right length?
There's rubber bushings on the rack. I don't know how you'd define right length, but it works, so I'm good with that.
Thanks for the great videos! Looking forward to more!!
What was the part number on the knuckle
So that's how Kevin lost it
Will that knuckle work on a stock rack? Plus, what is the link to the knuckle? Love this Mod!
Good idea. I did this mod to the steering shaft on my Fairmont. Mine's a power rack though
can you link the name of join , i will need to do same on ma capri 79 new flaming river thx
I done this mod on my capri. Steering feels more responsive.
Thanks for sharing David, are the splines on the flaming river rack smaller than the splines on the factory rack?
Yes sir they are, the Flaming River rack uses a 9/16"-26 spline shaft while the factory power rack has 3/4" shaft with 36 splines.
Empi ! That’s a Vw parts company. Have you lost your mind . I would expect something like this from Rodney but not you !
