Glad someone is being HONEST about the downsides of life in North Idaho. So many people move to the panhandle every year without a clue of what it's like to live through cold, dark, hard winters, year after year. So many people get TOLD what North Idaho is like, visit during the summer, decide to move here, and then get desperate to leave after three years. I think a person has to understand and accept the hazards and hardships of winter if they want to be happy living here for the long-term.
My husband and I just retired from the military, and we're moving to northern Idaho (Priest Lake) to enjoy all the nature and the small year-round community. Your Priest Lake video was helpful in our decision - I'm glad you found your niche!
We left North Idaho in 1999. We loved it there. But we couldn't make a living anymore and the winters were pretty difficult. We moved to Colorado Springs Colorado where we get over 300 days of sun per year. Yes we do have snow storms occasionally but the snow doesn't stick around and the Sun comes out very quickly. Trent you wouldn't remember me, but we went to the same church as your family when we lived up there. My wife's family is still up there. As much as we loved North Idaho we would probably not move back at this point. The only thing I don't like about Colorado is it is a very liberal State politically because of Denver and boulder. But the rest of the state is very conservative and the mountains are just amazing here. So it's still a great place to live. Always enjoyed your videos over the years!
I grew up in central Washington but have lived the last 34 years in Seattle and we’re building in Rathdrum. I know what I’m getting into with the weather and can’t wait to get away from the rain and crazy politics.
Vitamin D cannot be over-emphasized. Also, I spend a lot more time planning shenanigans in the late Fall, Winter, and early Spring (especially when hunting season ends). During the nice weather, it's so easy to just throw together outdoor plans and enjoy the sun. When it's dark and gloomy, I plan board game/cards/movie nights; homemade mulled cider, chai tea, fresh bread, and scratch soups; movie & dinner dates; axe-throwing, bowling, museums, arcades, checking out a new bar or restaurant (so many options); sledding, snowboarding/skiing, snowmobiling, eagle-watching cruise; etc. During the summer, our fun-money budget goes to gas, picnics, camping, etc. During the winter, it's the above. I'm allergic to the cold, so I spend a lot less time enjoying the snow than I'd like. I can relate to the cabin-fever feeling, especially when it's too cold for me to go outside without my Eskimo get-up and epi-pen.
I’m glad you are so honest, it’s a refreshing thing to experience these days. We’ve been here for 6 years and yeah the sunshine is my favorite friend and I miss her☀️ during this time of year. Hubby and I try to stay busy but with family so far away it is tough some days. Gotta stay busy and stay in touch. Thanks for the advice!

It was nice meeting you at Shiki Sushi this fall. I'm sorry I was socially awkward, but it was good to find a fellow combat engineer. I've been here all of my 50 years, and the short days are rough. Vitamin D helps me, and I really enjoy making music with friends. The REALLY rough time comes from mid-January through April. I call it the "cold, grey, North Idaho suck of winter." Every day seems to lack color and life. The growth .... Jeez. It's not just that the traffic is so bad, but it's that what used to be a 10 minute trip now takes 30 minutes. Half the people on the road seem either too elderly to drive or too distracted by their phones.
Funny you said that, my next video I drive all over, filming the whole thing to gauge how long it takes to get around now. And no worries on the socially awkward thing, I have my moments too. It’s all good.
i love the long, cold and dark winters. its where I absolutely thrive in it. i love those constant overcast days. i despise the tourism and the flood of people that constantly arrive. its like the state has an hiv infection crawling allover it.
I don't live in Idaho but I am in Washington state and I FEEL YOU! born and raised but other then the horrible politics here now the weather has become a downer for me. We are actually thinking of a possible move to a warmer state, as I get older I can't stand the cold nor the darkness. ☕
In 1978 I went to Alaska to visit a friend who moved there, and thought I could live there. But all summer the sun never goes down. I couldn't sleep for 2 months and had to go back to CA. Sad because it was so beautiful in Alaska!!
I am from San Diego inland spent 50 years as a resident I spent time in Washington, Minnesota, Georgia. I fit in nowhere until we moved to Northern Idaho and found my people. I love it here and do worry about the growth especially uncontrolled where it isn't about the residents, it's cash and dash.
I'm in San Diego (my whole life) between the cost, the local gov't, the border issues, and retirement, I'm being pushed out. Know 4 people in Boise, CDA, Twin Falls and SandPt. All love it. Just need to decide on a place, sell my house and I'm there. It's sad leaving all I've ever known, but exciting to find a new place with a different atmosphere and culture to explore. I'm hopeful.
Ex San Diego gal here…30 years there 30 up here and now here is turning into why I left California. Too crowded nowadays. I’d rather see nature than more people homes and buildings.

San Antonio TX Monterey CA San Antonio TX Wichitaw Falls TX Rapid City SD Mojave CA Mildenhall UK Cyprus Germany Albania Norway Qatar Tampa FL Retired from the military in Tampa FL and still live here. 2 things that I learned: 1. Every place sucked in its own special way. 2. Every place was amazing as well. I feel like you do. I lived on the edge of Tampa. Now, "the edge" is 45 minutes north of us, and everyone and their cousin is moving in. Looking around for an emptier chunk of the world to move to.

Here’s something I invite you all to consider. This title is not completely misleading. “I’m leaving Idaho and I can’t take another year of this” is something I say every single year around this time. And so do a lot of people that live here. That’s exactly what this video is about, how I always get there and what I do to get over it. Just because it took your mind in a different direction doesn’t mean it’s clickbait, it just didn’t match your expectations. Clickbait is saying one thing and then talking about something completely different or not delivering on a promise that was made. This is too nuanced for some people but I have faith that you guys can appreciate the game these video platforms make their content creators play. I see your Southern California and raise you east Texas. Your definition of "long and grueling summer" will be forever changed. However, I totally agree with you about cold and rain...and cold rain. Fortunately, during the month of winter here we sometimes get those things.
Summer is like the Elysian fields. Sun kissed bounty rivaling the best on the planet. The northwest is Heaven in July and February is a vampire zombie wasteland like 30 days of Darkness that are enough to test the strongest hero. It’s psychologically brutal. The crazy part is there’s a whole country north of us…but that explains Trudeau.
Not me. I absolutely love the winter and the long nights! I hate summer. Driving home to the ranch at about 3 am and the sun is coming up, is something I hate. Winter darkness is beautiful! The snowstorms are beautiful even when I'm stuck up on the mountain. But Mr. Rancher has a snow plow and will plow our roads. And lots of ppl in town's driveways. But I live in an area with a population of 1152, so it's like everyone is family. Our busiest season is hunting season. And steelhead fishing time. Other than that, just town ppl. We have one bar. No fast food restaurants. Heck, we don't even have a stoplight here! I. Love. It.
North Idaho is like north anywhere in the country. If you're not used to winter and snow it's a bit getting used to and it's not for everyone. People who lived all their lives in in the LA area it'll be a shock.
I'm in Washington State, and i don't do well in the shorter, darker days. I love the sun and riding my horses in the sun. This never-ending rain wrecks everything. I want to stay on day light savings year round. I need to be a snowbird. Head to AZ in the fall. 😊
Great video man. I want to put this out there because people dont really seem to understand, but growth is happening everywhere. It's not an idaho thing. The state of rhode Island has a population of 1.096 million people. It's the smallest state geographically in the nation. Idaho has 1.96 million people, and it's 54 times larger than rhode Island. What makes idaho feel "full" is the fact that the majority of the state is government land (as it should be). With that said, I know feeling the growth has to be hard for native Idahoans. Seeing things change has to suck, I feel for them in that way. However, if you leave the state and live somewhere else, you'll learn that it is a nationwide challenge, not an idaho one. And if you are considering leaving idaho, or have already, you'll be a person moving into some "other persons state" doing that same thing. At the end of the day, you've got to do what's best for you and your family. If you truly believe in America where we all have a choice to live the lives we are wanting, this type of freedom is the cost that comes with that freedom. I hope you all have an amazing Thanksgiving, enjoying the finer things in life.
Very well said. Growth happening everywhere. And movement went crazy with the pandemic city fleeing that went on when people could work remote. On a different level even though many leaving San Francisco recently, prior to pandemic the city did experience an explosion with multiple high rise super lux, expensive apartment buildings going up, out of control $$ no average person could afford. (I don't live there anymore but work there so witnessed this). While not an exact situation echoing your point of growth everywhere. My biggest concern for Idaho even though I don't live there is it turning purple or blue.
@kc4091 Yean, naturally, I think most people in idaho are concerned about the state turning blue or purple. And that makes sense, aside from its beauty, its the politics that makes idaho the place that it is. However, if I remember correctly, Idaho has become more republican then ever before. If this is true, then the question arises: "How has Idaho become more republican when most people are moving from California, Oregon and Washington?" This suggests that, more often than not, the people moving in are republicans, even if they come from a democratic state. This isn’t an accident, people do their research before moving, and they understand the politics. Thats a significant reason for why they move there . However, its the numbers/statistics that tell us this; its beneficial to look past our initial assumptions.

Ahhh, the pros and cons of this beautiful area! I watched your videos for months before I moved there. Great insights to what to expect. Fast forward 6 months. Moved here from northern NV which can have long snowy winters. But.... Lots of sun! This winter in the dark, cold, overcast area will be my first. I can absolutely relate to the feelings of gloom so early in the day. Other observations of now loving here. Most neighbors won't even look at me let alone say hi. The drivers here are nuts! The job market and pay is extremely depressing. It's hard with such different laws in WA and ID with job certifications. While a few people smile I have noticed that when I smile people look at me like I have a disease. I've literally been thanked for smiling from a gentleman. He said look around no one does. The pluses so far. Gorgeous outdoors. Lots of places to see and explore. Gas prices are the best. Utilities are very cheap. I'm used to the house prices so that's not much of a change. As you said though jobs are something that is lacking. For the early 20s that don't have much experience or college I'm not sure how they can survive on the wages. Not sure if this will be my forever town. So for now I'll enjoy what it is. TBD 😊
We left...I LOVE IDAHO, BUT we were there 5 years and did not know any of our neighbors. They don't want to know you. They want to be isolated off grid type folks. Most don't care for newcomers. The winters are LONG and DARK just as you say. I grew up in the sun on the coast so it is hard. I loved summers on LPO, but too short! Miss a lot! Not the dark winters alone.
Appreciate the honesty in this video, especially since you’re a realtor. My husband wants to move to Montana in the near future, and we currently live in CA. It’s beautiful there, but I’m not sure about the long winters. Visited Twin Falls two years ago on our way to Southwest Montana.
Same thing is happening here in Bend Oregon. We have become Bendiego as the natives refer to it. It's a shame what has happened to Central Oregon . Right now it's 27 degrees and dark at 4:30 pm. Despite that this is still home to me and my family.

I live in Post Falls now. I used to live in California near Sacramento. I realize the change in latitude, but I don't think it gets dark here so much earlier. I also want to say that I was just about your age when I stopped having so many friends and people to go do things with and that seems to be a pretty normal and natural thing for men in general. It's an adjustment for sure. Volunteering somewhere or getting involved in church really helped me fight the blues. Best of luck to you. Everyone should know by now it’s not easy anywhere! I live in Las Vegas. This past summer was the worst I have experienced having been here for 34 years. We get 5 months of heat and at least 2 of them scorching. If you want to be aside to walk the dogs or spend some time at the park, you have to do it by 8am. You become prisoner to the indoors. Oh did I mention we get no rain? Having said that the winters are doable. Get some wind and chilly days but that’s it. Idaho looks like heaven although I’m not sure I could do the long winters of snow and gray days. We all have those visions of Idaho but I realize it’s unrealistic. Have put my end goal of moving there to the side for now.
I moved here and I am from Colorado. I am 50 and retired at 43. I am now handicap. As for things I come from a family who plays hockey, snowmobiling and I do a lot of research and play music.
I could live in the cold dark north if I had a tanning bed or booth in my house. I'm not into getting dark skin, but once or twice a month will really boost your mood from the D3 you get from those tanning bed/booths just like being in the sun.
You have to think about what works best for your family long term. The seasonality can be dealt with. But the economic situation is hard to buck. Looked at the picture of your family and the kids are all within 10 years of being adults and wanting to get their own place and start their own families. They are facing a big wall. I am hoping to find a location that my wife and kids in their 20's to grow from. Don't have good answers, but fathers face hard questions head on. I do envy your ability to go ride in amazing country. Midwest cannot touch any of that.
I know what it's like, I grew up in the Chewelah area. I remember seeing -40, water froze up. I live in the Lewiston area now, shorter warmer winters here. Easier living down this way in the NW banana belt.
Lol I do not live in Idaho but I did live in Deer Park WA for over 30 years. Idaho was a great place to go camping or just driving around exploring the area. BUT you think Idaho is bad in the winter. Haha You ought to be in Minnesota. We get the early dark in winter too. Unfortunately for 8 months of the year we are extremely cold and it is dreary. You have temps where you can bundle up and go out and play in the soft snow. Here it is so cold that the snow freezes to ice. You jump in it and it hurts. Snowballs are either so dry that they will not stick together or they are ice balls that will kill you if you get hit with them. 😂 snowmobiling I do not find fun because it is so cold out. A lit if our winter months are at 40 below or lower. I have bern thinking of getting put of her and moving to Northern Idaho. The only thing stopping me is the expense of land. It is so very much higher than when I lived in the area.
Might be the most honest realtor on the internet. A little advise from somebody who has their finger on the geopolitical pulse. You may want to wait till NUCLEAR TENSIONS cool down. Idaho and Montana might be very nice places to live next Spring/Summer.
I'm in California which is a transient state. People flock here for jobs or weather, and then one day decide to move for a multitude of reasons. So I know what its like to have a lot of friends move. Regarding Idaho weather, I've been there several times in the coldest part of winter and a family member has lived there for 40ish years. So I hear from her how hard the seasonal swings can be. The winter weather is probably the biggest thing holding Idaho from even more explosive growth than what it's had. Don't blame you for being concerned about how far the change will be. Certain political groups are trying very hard to turn red states blue, case in point Colorado.

I moved from northern California to Montana. I hate, hate the long, dark and cold winter five months. I love being outdoors not here. The other issue is culture. So different which makes it difficult to make friends. If California had not become such a pit of crime etc. I would never of left
We get double hammered this time of year with the darkness. The daylight savings change hurts and then we have the stupid time zone problem, the entire state should be on mountain time. I don't like the deep snow but honestly like the cold just because I generally prefer the rural lifestyle and despise urbanization.

In some cases it's therapeutic to talk about what's making you sad, but I believe being as positive as you can with good ideas to change your sadness is far better for you, your family and your followers. I feel the same way but I don't think it is the DST change per se. I moved back here from California over 5 years ago and yes it is a pain but the sunset time from where I was in California is about 30 minutes later than here and it is not going to change with or with out DST. You are right: stay active and take your vitamin D.

Really, the best scenario is to have a place up here for summer and a place down south for winter. Otherwise, it's too hot in the southwest in the summer to stay there.
I feel the same but from San Diego when i see mentally ill homeless people freaking out in the roadway, shoplifting, crapping on the bike path, setting up camps everywhere, hypodermic needles and trash, graffiti , etc.
Im a N. Idaho native and yes everything seems to be getting worse here. The tourists seem to act like the whole community 8s here to serve them. Living at the base of Canfield I see more and more bicycilsts and hikers who complain about the atv's and motorcycles on the mountain. We used to drive trucks to the top and now thats gone. I see vacationers leave garbage everywhere. The traffic is now like a major cities. The employment situation does not support the living costs. And I feel like the locals are being driven out and thats hard for me as my family came here in 1865. My children and other family members have left because they just cant make it here anymore. Dont move here unless you have the funds to sustain yourself and PLEASE dont try to change us or the way we live. "Thats not the way we did it back home" are like nails on a chalkboard to us.
I was wondering if Coeur d'Alene and Hayden, Post Falls will turn into another Spokane city environment? There is building everywhere and we are losing our country side look and feel.

The trouble with the tourist economy is that the businesses seem to forget who supports them through the long winters. The prices never go back to a more reasonable level. And, lots of them close in September, not to return til May. I'm at the point where I can't make a left hand turn in my own town. I wish the Legislators would get the guts to do away with Daylight time. Good luck, Montana has the same problems, I hate tourists.
Crazy that Vitamin D really has come to my rescue. I wear long sleeves and a hat all year so I don't get sun. As a builder I like working in Snow rather than this daily rain.
I live near south lake tahoe, we have millions of people all year, the bay area people are rude and demanding. I don't blame my kids for leaving, not too far, but they left the snow and ice.
I get it Trent. Perhaps a better title would have been "Seasonal Depression Disorder - what it is and how to overcome it". Your "audience" is from all over and the comments reflect how people that have lived in cold climes get it. It's some serious stuff and contributes to the suicide/drug use rate for people that aren't warned to watch their ass and learn about it. I think along with your own experience, you would have received additional feedback from those who have been here a few years that could use more referral advise and share their experience. There's more to combating it then meds and D3 (although those are crucial for diagnosis and setting a plan to beat it. I have it too and it's not going anywhere for the last 40 years I've lived here. Grew up in sunny climes but the writing was on the wall....could see what was coming to destroy those places. How about another version - explaining more on what it is and how people can learn about it and get help to overcome it if needed????? It's real and it's nothing to mess with.....
Bend isn't a whole lot different than Northern Idaho, as far as the short days, but it's insane the number of people there now. I'm a couple hours drive from Bend, and it's even growing out here in the middle of the desert. Still hoping that this "Greater Idaho" thing doesn't go through, as some of Idaho's laws contradict some of my reasons for moving to Oregon.
Well paying "career" jobs are next to nil in most all parts of Idaho. Your housing has gone insane 100x the local paycheck. And that was 5 years ago when we took our whole vacation in coeur d'alene and trucked around all over. Only to find, no jobs could support us there.
Too dry for me. Great gas prices though. Biggest employee is walmart, after micron. Self-employment is always best, but not for everyone. 43rd in capita income, Oregon 21, Montana 30. Oregon has twice the population, but triple the gdp. Everyone loves Idaho taxes and low regulation, but why can't they attract more companies, and create more opportunities for young people?

Vitamin D cannot be over-emphasized. Also, I spend a lot more time planning shenanigans in the late Fall, Winter, and early Spring (especially when hunting season ends). During the nice weather, it's so easy to just throw together outdoor plans and enjoy the sun. When it's dark and gloomy, I plan board game/cards/movie nights; homemade mulled cider, chai tea, fresh bread, and scratch soups; movie & dinner dates; axe-throwing, bowling, museums, arcades, checking out a new bar or restaurant (so many options); sledding, snowboarding/skiing, snowmobiling, eagle-watching cruise; etc. During the summer, our fun-money budget goes to gas, picnics, camping, etc. During the winter, it's the above.
I'm allergic to the cold, so I spend a lot less time enjoying the snow than I'd like. I can relate to the cabin-fever feeling, especially when it's too cold for me to go outside without my Eskimo get-up and epi-pen.
I’m glad you are so honest, it’s a refreshing thing to experience these days. We’ve been here for 6 years and yeah the sunshine is my favorite friend and I miss her☀️ during this time of year. Hubby and I try to stay busy but with family so far away it is tough some days. Gotta stay busy and stay in touch. Thanks for the advice!

I've been here all of my 50 years, and the short days are rough. Vitamin D helps me, and I really enjoy making music with friends. The REALLY rough time comes from mid-January through April. I call it the "cold, grey, North Idaho suck of winter." Every day seems to lack color and life.
The growth .... Jeez. It's not just that the traffic is so bad, but it's that what used to be a 10 minute trip now takes 30 minutes. Half the people on the road seem either too elderly to drive or too distracted by their phones.
Funny you said that, my next video I drive all over, filming the whole thing to gauge how long it takes to get around now. And no worries on the socially awkward thing, I have my moments too. It’s all good.

I don't live in Idaho but I am in Washington state and I FEEL YOU! born and raised but other then the horrible politics here now the weather has become a downer for me. We are actually thinking of a possible move to a warmer state, as I get older I can't stand the cold nor the darkness. ☕
In 1978 I went to Alaska to visit a friend who moved there, and thought I could live there. But all summer the sun never goes down. I couldn't sleep for 2 months and had to go back to CA. Sad because it was so beautiful in Alaska!!
I am from San Diego inland spent 50 years as a resident I spent time in Washington, Minnesota, Georgia. I fit in nowhere until we moved to Northern Idaho and found my people. I love it here and do worry about the growth especially uncontrolled where it isn't about the residents, it's cash and dash.
I'm in San Diego (my whole life) between the cost, the local gov't, the border issues, and retirement, I'm being pushed out. Know 4 people in Boise, CDA, Twin Falls and SandPt. All love it. Just need to decide on a place, sell my house and I'm there. It's sad leaving all I've ever known, but exciting to find a new place with a different atmosphere and culture to explore. I'm hopeful.

This title is not completely misleading. “I’m leaving Idaho and I can’t take another year of this” is something I say every single year around this time. And so do a lot of people that live here. That’s exactly what this video is about, how I always get there and what I do to get over it. Just because it took your mind in a different direction doesn’t mean it’s clickbait, it just didn’t match your expectations. Clickbait is saying one thing and then talking about something completely different or not delivering on a promise that was made. This is too nuanced for some people but I have faith that you guys can appreciate the game these video platforms make their content creators play. Sorry if this upsets you but hopefully the information was valuable nonetheless?

Summer is like the Elysian fields. Sun kissed bounty rivaling the best on the planet. The northwest is Heaven in July and February is a vampire zombie wasteland like 30 days of Darkness that are enough to test the strongest hero. It’s psychologically brutal. The crazy part is there’s a whole country north of us…but that explains Trudeau.
Not me. I absolutely love the winter and the long nights! I hate summer. Driving home to the ranch at about 3 am and the sun is coming up, is something I hate. Winter darkness is beautiful! The snowstorms are beautiful even when I'm stuck up on the mountain. But Mr. Rancher has a snow plow and will plow our roads. And lots of ppl in town's driveways.
But I live in an area with a population of 1152, so it's like everyone is family. Our busiest season is hunting season. And steelhead fishing time. Other than that, just town ppl. We have one bar. No fast food restaurants. Heck, we don't even have a stoplight here! I. Love. It.
North Idaho is like north anywhere in the country. If you're not used to winter and snow it's a bit getting used to and it's not for everyone. People who lived all their lives in in the LA area it'll be a shock.
I'm in Washington State, and i don't do well in the shorter, darker days. I love the sun and riding my horses in the sun. This never-ending rain wrecks everything. I want to stay on day light savings year round. I need to be a snowbird. Head to AZ in the fall. 😊

I want to put this out there because people dont really seem to understand, but growth is happening everywhere. It's not an idaho thing. The state of rhode Island has a population of 1.096 million people. It's the smallest state geographically in the nation. Idaho has 1.96 million people, and it's 54 times larger than rhode Island. What makes idaho feel "full" is the fact that the majority of the state is government land (as it should be).
With that said, I know feeling the growth has to be hard for native Idahoans. Seeing things change has to suck, I feel for them in that way. However, if you leave the state and live somewhere else, you'll learn that it is a nationwide challenge, not an idaho one. And if you are considering leaving idaho, or have already, you'll be a person moving into some "other persons state" doing that same thing. At the end of the day, you've got to do what's best for you and your family. If you truly believe in America where we all have a choice to live the lives we are wanting, this type of freedom is the cost that comes with that freedom.

Very well said. Growth happening everywhere. And movement went crazy with the pandemic city fleeing that went on when people could work remote. On a different level even though many leaving San Francisco recently, prior to pandemic the city did experience an explosion with multiple high rise super lux, expensive apartment buildings going up, out of control $$ no average person could afford. (I don't live there anymore but work there so witnessed this). While not an exact situation echoing your point of growth everywhere.
My biggest concern for Idaho even though I don't live there is it turning purple or blue.

However, if I remember correctly, Idaho has become more republican then ever before. If this is true, then the question arises: "How has Idaho become more republican when most people are moving from California, Oregon and Washington?" This suggests that, more often than not, the people moving in are republicans, even if they come from a democratic state. This isn’t an accident, people do their research before moving, and they understand the politics. Thats a significant reason for why they move there . However, its the numbers/statistics that tell us this; its beneficial to look past our initial assumptions.

I watched your videos for months before I moved there. Great insights to what to expect.
Fast forward 6 months. Moved here from northern NV which can have long snowy winters. But.... Lots of sun! This winter in the dark, cold, overcast area will be my first. I can absolutely relate to the feelings of gloom so early in the day.
Other observations of now loving here. Most neighbors won't even look at me let alone say hi. The drivers here are nuts! The job market and pay is extremely depressing. It's hard with such different laws in WA and ID with job certifications.
While a few people smile I have noticed that when I smile people look at me like I have a disease. I've literally been thanked for smiling from a gentleman. He said look around no one does.
The pluses so far. Gorgeous outdoors. Lots of places to see and explore. Gas prices are the best. Utilities are very cheap. I'm used to the house prices so that's not much of a change.
As you said though jobs are something that is lacking. For the early 20s that don't have much experience or college I'm not sure how they can survive on the wages.
Not sure if this will be my forever town. So for now I'll enjoy what it is. TBD 😊

We left...I LOVE IDAHO, BUT we were there 5 years and did not know any of our neighbors. They don't want to know you. They want to be isolated off grid type folks. Most don't care for newcomers. The winters are LONG and DARK just as you say. I grew up in the sun on the coast so it is hard. I loved summers on LPO, but too short! Miss a lot! Not the dark winters alone.
Appreciate the honesty in this video, especially since you’re a realtor. My husband wants to move to Montana in the near future, and we currently live in CA. It’s beautiful there, but I’m not sure about the long winters. Visited Twin Falls two years ago on our way to Southwest Montana.

Same thing is happening here in Bend Oregon. We have become Bendiego as the natives refer to it. It's a shame what has happened to Central Oregon . Right now it's 27 degrees and dark at 4:30 pm. Despite that this is still home to me and my family.

I live in Post Falls now. I used to live in California near Sacramento. I realize the change in latitude, but I don't think it gets dark here so much earlier. I also want to say that I was just about your age when I stopped having so many friends and people to go do things with and that seems to be a pretty normal and natural thing for men in general. It's an adjustment for sure. Volunteering somewhere or getting involved in church really helped me fight the blues. Best of luck to you. Everyone should know by now it’s not easy anywhere! I live in Las Vegas. This past summer was the worst I have experienced having been here for 34 years. We get 5 months of heat and at least 2 of them scorching. If you want to be aside to walk the dogs or spend some time at the park, you have to do it by 8am. You become prisoner to the indoors. Oh did I mention we get no rain? Having said that the winters are doable. Get some wind and chilly days but that’s it. Idaho looks like heaven although I’m not sure I could do the long winters of snow and gray days. We all have those visions of Idaho but I realize it’s unrealistic. Have put my end goal of moving there to the side for now.
I moved here and I am from Colorado. I am 50 and retired at 43. I am now handicap. As for things I come from a family who plays hockey, snowmobiling and I do a lot of research and play music.
I could live in the cold dark north if I had a tanning bed or booth in my house. I'm not into getting dark skin, but once or twice a month will really boost your mood from the D3 you get from those tanning bed/booths just like being in the sun.
You have to think about what works best for your family long term. The seasonality can be dealt with. But the economic situation is hard to buck. Looked at the picture of your family and the kids are all within 10 years of being adults and wanting to get their own place and start their own families. They are facing a big wall. I am hoping to find a location that my wife and kids in their 20's to grow from. Don't have good answers, but fathers face hard questions head on. I do envy your ability to go ride in amazing country. Midwest cannot touch any of that.
I know what it's like, I grew up in the Chewelah area. I remember seeing -40, water froze up. I live in the Lewiston area now, shorter warmer winters here. Easier living down this way in the NW banana belt.
Lol I do not live in Idaho but I did live in Deer Park WA for over 30 years. Idaho was a great place to go camping or just driving around exploring the area. BUT you think Idaho is bad in the winter. Haha You ought to be in Minnesota. We get the early dark in winter too. Unfortunately for 8 months of the year we are extremely cold and it is dreary. You have temps where you can bundle up and go out and play in the soft snow. Here it is so cold that the snow freezes to ice. You jump in it and it hurts. Snowballs are either so dry that they will not stick together or they are ice balls that will kill you if you get hit with them. 😂 snowmobiling I do not find fun because it is so cold out. A lit if our winter months are at 40 below or lower. I have bern thinking of getting put of her and moving to Northern Idaho. The only thing stopping me is the expense of land. It is so very much higher than when I lived in the area.
Metro Vancouver, BC today was equally pitch dark when you're out of the downtown areas by 5pm. But not as cold as you at 50F.

I'm in California which is a transient state. People flock here for jobs or weather, and then one day decide to move for a multitude of reasons. So I know what its like to have a lot of friends move.
Regarding Idaho weather, I've been there several times in the coldest part of winter and a family member has lived there for 40ish years. So I hear from her how hard the seasonal swings can be. The winter weather is probably the biggest thing holding Idaho from even more explosive growth than what it's had.
Don't blame you for being concerned about how far the change will be. Certain political groups are trying very hard to turn red states blue, case in point Colorado.

I moved back here from California over 5 years ago and yes it is a pain but the sunset time from where I was in California is about 30 minutes later than here and it is not going to change with or with out DST. You are right: stay active and take your vitamin D.

Im a N. Idaho native and yes everything seems to be getting worse here. The tourists seem to act like the whole community 8s here to serve them. Living at the base of Canfield I see more and more bicycilsts and hikers who complain about the atv's and motorcycles on the mountain. We used to drive trucks to the top and now thats gone. I see vacationers leave garbage everywhere. The traffic is now like a major cities. The employment situation does not support the living costs. And I feel like the locals are being driven out and thats hard for me as my family came here in 1865. My children and other family members have left because they just cant make it here anymore. Dont move here unless you have the funds to sustain yourself and PLEASE dont try to change us or the way we live. "Thats not the way we did it back home" are like nails on a chalkboard to us.

The trouble with the tourist economy is that the businesses seem to forget who supports them through the long winters. The prices never go back to a more reasonable level. And, lots of them close in September, not to return til May. I'm at the point where I can't make a left hand turn in my own town. I wish the Legislators would get the guts to do away with Daylight time. Good luck, Montana has the same problems, I hate tourists.

I get it Trent. Perhaps a better title would have been "Seasonal Depression Disorder - what it is and how to overcome it". Your "audience" is from all over and the comments reflect how people that have lived in cold climes get it. It's some serious stuff and contributes to the suicide/drug use rate for people that aren't warned to watch their ass and learn about it.
I think along with your own experience, you would have received additional feedback from those who have been here a few years that could use more referral advise and share their experience. There's more to combating it then meds and D3 (although those are crucial for diagnosis and setting a plan to beat it. I have it too and it's not going anywhere for the last 40 years I've lived here. Grew up in sunny climes but the writing was on the wall....could see what was coming to destroy those places. How about another version - explaining more on what it is and how people can learn about it and get help to overcome it if needed????? It's real and it's nothing to mess with.....

Bend isn't a whole lot different than Northern Idaho, as far as the short days, but it's insane the number of people there now. I'm a couple hours drive from Bend, and it's even growing out here in the middle of the desert. Still hoping that this "Greater Idaho" thing doesn't go through, as some of Idaho's laws contradict some of my reasons for moving to Oregon.
Wasn’t a mistake for us. We have full winters.
Too cold, crazy people, too many bears, and you always have to be armed , because of the crazy people.

Well paying "career" jobs are next to nil in most all parts of Idaho. Your housing has gone insane 100x the local paycheck. And that was 5 years ago when we took our whole vacation in coeur d'alene and trucked around all over. Only to find, no jobs could support us there.
Too dry for me. Great gas prices though. Biggest employee is walmart, after micron. Self-employment is always best, but not for everyone. 43rd in capita income, Oregon 21, Montana 30. Oregon has twice the population, but triple the gdp. Everyone loves Idaho taxes and low regulation, but why can't they attract more companies, and create more opportunities for young people?
It’s happening but very slowly. I think the qualified work pool is a little shallow. It’s getting better but it takes time.
