Convert your generator to propane (kits online for cheap) and use Propane. It doesn't go bad like gas, and you can get it delivered. Just get a second propane tank from what you have and you're good. (and get small pallets and put your barrels on the pallets and then just use the forks on your tractor to move them)
I would go for low rpm diesel generators, 1800 rpm 4 pole on 3 cilinder kubota diesel. hate those high rpm trow away sets, way less dependable and noisy on 3600 rpm!
could also get a large 1000 gallon or +/- and bury so its out of out of mind plus would be protected from temp extremes and function better especially in winter and Hod forbid should forest fire being in ground tank be protected then the auto start/stop function could be possible the large tank would last all winter do not work about being refilled in winter when the roads are difficult
Martin, you might want to make sure you put a heavy duty trash bag over the top of that gasoline barrel because it’s out where rain can get in. accumulating on top and leak through the threads and get into your gasoline so if you put a trash bag upside down over it and maybe even put some duct tape around it to hold it down tight that’ll keep the snow out
I had a similar issue, and it turned out to be my check value. It was taking my pressure tank a lot longer to fill up. I replaced the value, and there are no issues now. Good luck, and God bless!
One small suggestion find or build some small pallets to put your drums on then use forks on tractor to move around just remember to set them on something so they don't freeze to the ground. and figure some type of plug for the end of the hose on the gas pump so stuff doesn't grt in or it drops to the ground and start a siphon some how I guess that was three
Definitely recommend adding some Stabil and some Diesel treatment like Hot Shots EDT to the containers before you fill them. Gets them good and mixed and then it's cheap insurance for a year of storage/use. Helps all your equipment as well. 🐾🐾
Thanks for sharing in the checklist with us. One thing to make sure is that flange is water tight around the pipe for the pump. I know someone that got water in a 45 gal drum because there was no oring on the flange .
The plastic barrels are convenient for me. I buy fuel in 5 gallon jugs while I’m in town for other errands - when I find a good (less expensive). I store it until the vehicle’s tank runs low, and skip making a trip to the gas station when fuel is more expensive.
I have been doing that for 3 years. Have 6 barrels of gasoline one raised tank that has about 300 gallons of diesel fuel and another tank with 100+ gallons of die diesel for my tractor. Also 6 food grade IBC tites that will be used for rain catchment. I use Pri D for diesel stabilizer and Pri G for the gas. Thanks for sharing..... Jeff
I remember my uncle would have a plastic oil tank on the farm, the kind used in homes for oil heating (uk), and have someone come and fill it up with diesel. It was cheaper than a trip to the gas station every time, a bit cheaper too. I'd also recommend a good fire extinguishing system nearby :)
Just empty the fuel from the wood splitter. Start the generator with what is in the fuel line and the carb and run it out of gas. Don't leave fuel in it.
You can just buy drums of gas, and diesel. Don't put them on the ground and they will last a long time before rust is a problem. Set them on an angle so any water on top will run off away from the bungs.
For diesel fuel in cold weather, buy 5 or 10gal of#1 diesel in your old 5gallon jugs and use a 50% mix in your tractor during weather under 10 degrees above zero.. otherwise your diesel may gel in your tractor, and it will not run.. I prefer using some #1 diesel over anti gel additives to prevent #2 diesel from gelling below zero.
Very nice Marty, I use the blue barrels for fuel many times, before and after hurricane, easy to transport. You can also use your 5 gallon cans to refill the drum if you get to a half barrel and weather is turning bad..
I have bought a Gas/Propane generator. That way you could attach your generator to the big propane tank you have. The big thing is propane does not go bad. If you need gas for your vehicle, then gas barrels are a good idea.
Please keep in mind storing gasoline is inherently dangerous, especially if it’s inside a building where fumes can accumulate. Also, gasoline has a shelf life, about 6 months, then it starts to turn into shellac.
I'm guessing you are going to bury that steel drum up to the rim and use it for food storage. Maybe root veggies or some of your freeze-dried products.
From a functional perspective the idea works. However it might be necessary to build a catch basin under your storage unit. Without knowing the specific law on the matter I would suggest the EPA requires catch basins for storage above a certain size. You don’t want fuel leaking down into yours or your neighbors water. Again without knowing the law it might be required to placard your barrels with a flammable label and to place your flammable storage a set distance away from your residence. That would be based on local fire codes. If fire fighters ever need to come to your property they would want to know about large quantities of stored flammables. Especially since your business is all out there for public scrutiny.
Ya, it’s kinda funny when RUclipsrs put themselves on “front street”. I seriously doubt any of your concerns were thought of. “Preppers do the same thing without regard to safety. I would almost bet that Idaho doesn’t care or has the manpower to in force any kind of code requirements.
@ yea, knowing some of the building officials in my county I can say they mostly respond to complaints. Which I think is a good policy. If nobody complains there are a limited number of situations they investigate. Unfortunately that’s how situations sometimes get so bad the neighbors are in danger. It’s the risk we take for liberty.
@ it’s a fine balance my friend. I’m a retired building inspector and our department was the same way. It’s all about manpower and “code enforcement” was always the first department cut when money gets tight. I do appreciate your observation though, because I was thinking the exact same thing. He is entertaining, that’s why I watch. lol
@@rogernation2551 they’ve carved themselves out a nice little place there in the woods. A whole lot of work going on. It scares me to see some of the chances they’ve taken. I wish them all the best and hope they get to enjoy the fruits for a very long time.
@ I couldn’t agree more. I have followed them from the beginning. The problem I see with most DIYers is they have the intelligence to accomplish the task, most by watching other people on RUclips, but they don’t have the education of that particular trade. Meaning most have no idea of the health risks of doing certain tasks, like grinding concrete, or why OSHA has certain guidelines. They see it on a video and think “I can do that”. Glad I’m retired. Hahaha
ditto on the propane! Kits are easy! And if the genset goes out, almost all the new models are already set up for duel or triple fuel use (Gasoline, Propane, Natural Gas). Or also buy a Generac - self install and it'll come on automatically according to battery levels.
Good one Martin 🙂, Yes when your off grid there is so many things that we can do to prepare, Great Tips awesome find 👍, My off grid setup just a little smaller than yours, But we are always finding new things to make our life a little easier :) Take care"
We have laws contrary to this activity. Fuel can only be picked up in approved container. The gas station shut me down for getting gas in a diesel can.
CONSIDERATION: Make sure the exhaust is not blowing towards the 55Gal Plastic Gas Barrel or towards the electric plug wire on the other end, or into the shed. You do not want 55 Gal of gas going up, next to Victron Equipment Shed.
To have a truly multi layer redundancy I would like to have enough gas and diesel for 1 or two years, with diesel having the advantage of staying good for longer. But my main backup would be a propane tank and generator. Propane stores indefinitely and a propane generator can be hooked to your solar system in such a way that the generator can auto start when the batteries get too low. I hope the thread tape you used was rated for use with fuel, otherwise you run the risk of it resolving in the fuel, running the risk of clogging your generator. btw, moose have been known to run walk through steel wire T-bar fencing, so I hope your fence works.
food grade metal barrel would an excellent dry food/ingredients container 🫙 possibly even be able to put under a vacuum seal to extend storage of dry goods would pait outside with truck rhino 🦏 bed liner to protect from moisture on the outside
Make sure you don't store the gas right next to the generator, I know a family that burnt down their house because of something similar. Place the gas away from the generator.
Just a question - you already have a propane tank for the house, why not next summer or so purchase a generator that uses lp/propane with auto start/stop. No more gasoline, maintenance is reduced and since it only runs when needed a separate 250 gal. Propane tank could last several years. Not sure if this has been suggested - another view. Love the videos, waiting for the shop build… hagd(have a great day) !!!
Ohh Martin, I converted my gas generators to DUAL (gas and propane) years ago... best decision I made re that! Neither of my portable generators have seen gasoline since the install. Propane is soooooo much better, easier, safer to store, more portable. Blessings, Mobe
Massive unlabeled safety hazard. Right next to your wood shack. Imagine the conflagration if you hit that with a snowplow. You need to carefully and brightly label those drums and store them in a safer way away from home and combustible stuff, with some sort of venting and leak capture. I like the idea of a faraday cage. I hope that hose isn't directly open to the gas. Vaporized gasoline is explosive.
Difference between Countries. UK Up to 30 litres only in an approved container ( domestic). So have to make that trip. This is to stop panic buying when fuel is in short supply and as the UK's last refining plant is about to close. That's very likely as our European allies will certainly look after themselves.
You'll probably use the metal drum to store food long term. The only use I've had for them, was a burn barrel, or a DIY wood stove. I prefer the plastic barrels for gas, diesel, rain catchment, and small septic systems. If I were you, I'd let that moose eat my apple trees and then harvest him in self defense...😂😅 Love ya'll ❤️

While that is true about propane, gas is almost 30% more efficient than propane.
Nice job.

You need to cover the barrel so water doesn't collect on top and get in the fuel or gas

Martie you should put a sizable roof covering over the drum and generator to help minimise moisture getting to your fuel

I would say that "Trickle" you are hearing is the frostline weep hole draining backdown.
God bless you all. Thank you.
Have you ever thought about building a lean to roof over the generator to keep the snow away from the generator?

I would guess that the red Mango drum would be for EMP protection for a few electrical devices. 😊
He'd have to remove the gasket for it to work as a faraday cage. I think it is for a smoker ;)

That also helps save money when you can buy the gas during the dips in prices.
I installed a filter and water separation kit on my diesel hand pump. Alsi treated the diesel.
I used the plastic for aviation gas. It worked well.

Great video good to see y'all
Just empty the fuel from the wood splitter. Start the generator with what is in the fuel line and the carb and run it out of gas. Don't leave fuel in it.
Make a lean tool roof for generator and gasoline storage.
Keep the snow off of it.
I wonder if you need a plug on the hose from the diesel pump to seal the tank as air and moisture may get into the tank?
I'm sure you could change the manual choke to an automatic one.
You can just buy drums of gas, and diesel. Don't put them on the ground and they will last a long time before rust is a problem. Set them on an angle so any water on top will run off away from the bungs.
Stor the Desall in the garage it will gell outside at below freezing temperature..........
Make sure that you check and make sure that the diesel has anti jell mixed in it!

Propane is the best option for a generator especially is you have it on property for the home
Very nice Marty, I use the blue barrels for fuel many times, before and after hurricane, easy to transport. You can also use your 5 gallon cans to refill the drum if you get to a half barrel and weather is turning bad..

Great Video, all the preparedness tips are very timely and helpful!
Great job. I would label those drums. Lol
Those hand crank pumps generate a lot of static electricity. I'd ground the pump.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing
Might want to consider putting some additive in the diesel so it doesn’t gel….
Please keep in mind storing gasoline is inherently dangerous, especially if it’s inside a building where fumes can accumulate. Also, gasoline has a shelf life, about 6 months, then it starts to turn into shellac.
Thank you
food storage for the orange drum usage
Great plan ! Not only will you have gas and diesel you will be save gas by staying home.
I think plastic is the smart way.
Thanks for the good generator tips.

Might be a bladder problem, should be able to purchase a repair kit. easy to replace. For the generator the switch off, you just ground the wire.
Awesome video! Love how y'all repurpose stuff! Also, you are so handy at doing all those electrical things! Awesome job! God bless.😊❤
You need to vent your barrels to prevent pressure build up in your barrels, which may cause an explosion.
Ya'lls solar shed is the same colors as ours from the shed center. Do you have a video on the wood shed build?
Might want to drill a tiny hole or 2 up top for ventilation. Probably very top of the sides. It will prevent it from expanding too much as well.
Do those need to be grounded against static electricity?
the Teflon tape for fuel handling is yellow white Teflon ?? wont stand up to fuel contact very well

Best way to turn off a generator remotely is a solenoid valve on the fuel line. This runs the generator out of fuel, which is ideal

Better to do the winter preps before the snow goes to flying.

I hope that the plastic barrels are suitable for fuel. Many plastics react to fuel with uncontrollable evaporation
You haven't factored in the fuel savings from travelling back and forwards.
