Convert your generator to propane (kits online for cheap) and use Propane. It doesn't go bad like gas, and you can get it delivered. Just get a second propane tank from what you have and you're good. (and get small pallets and put your barrels on the pallets and then just use the forks on your tractor to move them)
I would go for low rpm diesel generators, 1800 rpm 4 pole on 3 cilinder kubota diesel. hate those high rpm trow away sets, way less dependable and noisy on 3600 rpm!
could also get a large 1000 gallon or +/- and bury so its out of out of mind plus would be protected from temp extremes and function better especially in winter and Hod forbid should forest fire being in ground tank be protected then the auto start/stop function could be possible the large tank would last all winter do not work about being refilled in winter when the roads are difficult
Thanks for sharing in the checklist with us. One thing to make sure is that flange is water tight around the pipe for the pump. I know someone that got water in a 45 gal drum because there was no oring on the flange .
CONSIDERATION: Make sure the exhaust is not blowing towards the 55Gal Plastic Gas Barrel or towards the electric plug wire on the other end, or into the shed. You do not want 55 Gal of gas going up, next to Victron Equipment Shed.
One small suggestion find or build some small pallets to put your drums on then use forks on tractor to move around just remember to set them on something so they don't freeze to the ground. and figure some type of plug for the end of the hose on the gas pump so stuff doesn't grt in or it drops to the ground and start a siphon some how I guess that was three
I had a similar issue, and it turned out to be my check value. It was taking my pressure tank a lot longer to fill up. I replaced the value, and there are no issues now. Good luck, and God bless!
I remember my uncle would have a plastic oil tank on the farm, the kind used in homes for oil heating (uk), and have someone come and fill it up with diesel. It was cheaper than a trip to the gas station every time, a bit cheaper too. I'd also recommend a good fire extinguishing system nearby :)
Very nice Marty, I use the blue barrels for fuel many times, before and after hurricane, easy to transport. You can also use your 5 gallon cans to refill the drum if you get to a half barrel and weather is turning bad..
food grade metal barrel would an excellent dry food/ingredients container 🫙 possibly even be able to put under a vacuum seal to extend storage of dry goods would pait outside with truck rhino 🦏 bed liner to protect from moisture on the outside
Martin, you might want to make sure you put a heavy duty trash bag over the top of that gasoline barrel because it’s out where rain can get in. accumulating on top and leak through the threads and get into your gasoline so if you put a trash bag upside down over it and maybe even put some duct tape around it to hold it down tight that’ll keep the snow out
The plastic barrels are convenient for me. I buy fuel in 5 gallon jugs while I’m in town for other errands - when I find a good (less expensive). I store it until the vehicle’s tank runs low, and skip making a trip to the gas station when fuel is more expensive.
Please keep in mind storing gasoline is inherently dangerous, especially if it’s inside a building where fumes can accumulate. Also, gasoline has a shelf life, about 6 months, then it starts to turn into shellac.
You can just buy drums of gas, and diesel. Don't put them on the ground and they will last a long time before rust is a problem. Set them on an angle so any water on top will run off away from the bungs.
From a functional perspective the idea works. However it might be necessary to build a catch basin under your storage unit. Without knowing the specific law on the matter I would suggest the EPA requires catch basins for storage above a certain size. You don’t want fuel leaking down into yours or your neighbors water. Again without knowing the law it might be required to placard your barrels with a flammable label and to place your flammable storage a set distance away from your residence. That would be based on local fire codes. If fire fighters ever need to come to your property they would want to know about large quantities of stored flammables. Especially since your business is all out there for public scrutiny.
You'll probably use the metal drum to store food long term. The only use I've had for them, was a burn barrel, or a DIY wood stove. I prefer the plastic barrels for gas, diesel, rain catchment, and small septic systems. If I were you, I'd let that moose eat my apple trees and then harvest him in self defense...😂😅 Love ya'll ❤️
Non-Ethanol fuel does not need any fuel additive and will be good for ages Marty. I put non-Ethanol fuel in my Corvette for winter storage and in the Spring it always starts with no problems. Ethanol fuel on the other hand will not last past about 4 to 6 months, even with stabilizer in it Marty. I would recommend using "Chevron Techron Concentrate" additive. It is the same additive Shell stations use in their gasoline. Corvette people recommend Shell fuel for use in the "Corvette" line up. The Techron helps keep sulfur from forming on fuel gauge systems which will make the fuel gauge not read properly over time. The sulfur builds up over time much like lime in water builds up on faucets etc......Just saying!!!
Good one Martin 🙂, Yes when your off grid there is so many things that we can do to prepare, Great Tips awesome find 👍, My off grid setup just a little smaller than yours, But we are always finding new things to make our life a little easier :) Take care"
To have a truly multi layer redundancy I would like to have enough gas and diesel for 1 or two years, with diesel having the advantage of staying good for longer. But my main backup would be a propane tank and generator. Propane stores indefinitely and a propane generator can be hooked to your solar system in such a way that the generator can auto start when the batteries get too low. I hope the thread tape you used was rated for use with fuel, otherwise you run the risk of it resolving in the fuel, running the risk of clogging your generator. btw, moose have been known to run walk through steel wire T-bar fencing, so I hope your fence works.
Ohh Martin, I converted my gas generators to DUAL (gas and propane) years ago... best decision I made re that! Neither of my portable generators have seen gasoline since the install. Propane is soooooo much better, easier, safer to store, more portable. Blessings, Mobe
Difference between Countries. UK Up to 30 litres only in an approved container ( domestic). So have to make that trip. This is to stop panic buying when fuel is in short supply and as the UK's last refining plant is about to close. That's very likely as our European allies will certainly look after themselves.
Just a question - you already have a propane tank for the house, why not next summer or so purchase a generator that uses lp/propane with auto start/stop. No more gasoline, maintenance is reduced and since it only runs when needed a separate 250 gal. Propane tank could last several years. Not sure if this has been suggested - another view. Love the videos, waiting for the shop build… hagd(have a great day) !!!
I'm guessing you are going to bury that steel drum up to the rim and use it for food storage. Maybe root veggies or some of your freeze-dried products.
Massive unlabeled safety hazard. Right next to your wood shack. Imagine the conflagration if you hit that with a snowplow. You need to carefully and brightly label those drums and store them in a safer way away from home and combustible stuff, with some sort of venting and leak capture. I like the idea of a faraday cage. I hope that hose isn't directly open to the gas. Vaporized gasoline is explosive.
Y would go for a 1800 rpm 4 pole diesel generator.. Way more efficient and les fuel consumption, Y have a kubota 3 cilinder 8 kva 230 dieselgenerator like this (1500 rpm, 50 hz here) works great, is silent and less maintenance.Hate those screAMING trow away gas generators on 3600 rpm.. (Tip, those diesel generators are used in transportable light tower units, Sold second hand a lot)
Wouldn't diesel or propane generator be better since you can store diesel and propane much longer than gasoline. with diesel for a generator you can avoid the road tax for buying the non road diesel.
Sure hope no one says anything to you about fuel storage. I think I would save up and get a gravity fed station that wouldn't get me a fine with the nosy locals.
In most states it illegal to do most things these days and getting worse. Paint it red and call it good. No different then any other gas can. Good idea
Putting the generator and 55 gal. drum next to your shed is not a good thing / if a fire gets going your could lost your solar system / you never know ?

See Red poppy for the mother of all propane solutions :)
I would go for low rpm diesel generators, 1800 rpm 4 pole on 3 cilinder kubota diesel. hate those high rpm trow away sets, way less dependable and noisy on 3600 rpm!
While that is true about propane, gas is almost 30% more efficient than propane.
Nice job.

Martie you should put a sizable roof covering over the drum and generator to help minimise moisture getting to your fuel

Might be a bladder problem, should be able to purchase a repair kit. easy to replace. For the generator the switch off, you just ground the wire.
I had a similar issue, and it turned out to be my check value. It was taking my pressure tank a lot longer to fill up. I replaced the value, and there are no issues now. Good luck, and God bless!
I installed a filter and water separation kit on my diesel hand pump. Alsi treated the diesel.
I used the plastic for aviation gas. It worked well.
Have you ever thought about building a lean to roof over the generator to keep the snow away from the generator?
You could use the tractor to move them
You need to cover the barrel so water doesn't collect on top and get in the fuel or gas
I would guess that the red Mango drum would be for EMP protection for a few electrical devices. 😊
He'd have to remove the gasket for it to work as a faraday cage. I think it is for a smoker ;)
Great video good to see y'all

Propane is the best option for a generator especially is you have it on property for the home

Awesome video! Love how y'all repurpose stuff! Also, you are so handy at doing all those electrical things! Awesome job! God bless.😊❤
Great job. I would label those drums. Lol
Great Video, all the preparedness tips are very timely and helpful!

I wonder if you need a plug on the hose from the diesel pump to seal the tank as air and moisture may get into the tank?
Your building a still for moon shine, Good Man
The gas tank of a car is well made of steel, it does not rust. There is usually algae in a diesel tank if it is stored for a long time.
Our 2007 f150 has a plastic tank.
IFF YOU PUT A STEEL BARREL OUTSIDE ON A PALLET THE BOTTOM STARTS TO RUST IN NO TIME. Sorry, caps lock.

Better to do the winter preps before the snow goes to flying.

My Brother had used plastic 55 gal. containers for fuel for years and is still being a great source to have! :)

Please extend the woodshed to make a tractor garage for winter cover!!!
Better make sure your exhaust from the generator is not blowing unto your fuel tank don't need a fire or explosive result sir
U made a GREAT choice by going with manual hand pump, just saying!! :)
Best way to turn off a generator remotely is a solenoid valve on the fuel line. This runs the generator out of fuel, which is ideal
What about running your generator on propane rather than gasoline, it stores so much better?
INSTALL A TANK THEN FILL YOU CAN TRANPORT IN THEN THEN PUMP IN TANK
Ohh Martin, I converted my gas generators to DUAL (gas and propane) years ago... best decision I made re that! Neither of my portable generators have seen gasoline since the install. Propane is soooooo much better, easier, safer to store, more portable. Blessings, Mobe
Might want to drill a tiny hole or 2 up top for ventilation. Probably very top of the sides. It will prevent it from expanding too much as well.
IBC totes would have been an alternative with regards to storage and handling ....
Done do it!
Video nya bagus sekali, tapi kenapa Sarah dan Seth tidak ada di video Pak Martin??
Storing extra feed for the chicken in a barrel that's that clean.

how you will get the petrol if the last refinery plant do get close?
Way more easier!
Good video
I use aluminum tanks for refrigeration trailer or semi trucks with a rack with wheels

Speaking of maintenance, spend a little time watching Will Prouse, DIY solar channel on lithium battery Charging and cell balancing in a Solar System.

For the metal barrel, I’m guessing a wood burning stove for your greenhouse.
Are you aware you can purchase many kinds of drums in Athol? It would sure save you time and gas should you need them in the future.

I hope that the plastic barrels are suitable for fuel. Many plastics react to fuel with uncontrollable evaporation
Fuel
Coffee ☕️ ♥️
You could use the tractor to move them
Wouldn't diesel or propane generator be better since you can store diesel and propane much longer than gasoline. with diesel for a generator you can avoid the road tax for buying the non road diesel.
All that gas would cost you $2309.50 in the UK!!
You are going to start a steel drum band!! 😅
I love these, or you might want to put the anti-gel in it so it won’t freeze
You haven't factored in the fuel savings from travelling back and forwards.
Ya'lls solar shed is the same colors as ours from the shed center. Do you have a video on the wood shed build?
lean-to cover over generator and gas barrel.
dah food storage!
steel drum for anti personel mine
Building a still for body warming
must winterize darlnks, we do dis in romania also
Plastic is good for 6 months steel for two years.
have you considered the short storage life of modern gas? I know you can get addatives that help with this.
Sure hope no one says anything to you about fuel storage. I think I would save up and get a gravity fed station that wouldn't get me a fine with the nosy locals.
the gas will need a pressure vent
Harbor Freight hand pumps state they are not for gasoline because of the corrosive nature of gasoline. Even product photos show using steel barrels.
You can get one for gasoline at TSC.
At 13.50 looks like your siding is coming lose
Moonshine still
Faraday cage??
Or storinflour
Problem with buying 110 gallons of gasoline is that it goes bad after about 6 months
use non ethanol, thats way longer storable.
Plastic will be great to store fuel no problem.
the Teflon tape for fuel handling is yellow white Teflon ?? wont stand up to fuel contact very well
poly drums are not safe feul storage due to staic charges will set them burning
Do those need to be grounded against static electricity?
I believe in most states it’s illegal to store gas in non approved containers.
Bla bla bla...
In most states it illegal to do most things these days and getting worse. Paint it red and call it good. No different then any other gas can. Good idea
Putting the generator and 55 gal. drum next to your shed is not a good thing / if a fire gets going your could lost your solar system / you never know ?
Are you creating a BioDigester?
Did you cover the geny ? rain?
Your not right but it was funny.
Corn Squeezins
Water Teflon tape doesn't work with fuel..
Are you making a Faraday cage?
Bapak martin, apakah sehat.. salam dari indonesia
👍🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼❤️👍
What watt meter it that. And can it handle 1200 watts at 120volts
