I was at that game. First game in the new stadium, rooting for the Giants. Of course the next day was 9-11. The other thing about that game is that Both Jason Elam of the Broncos and Morten Anderson of the Giants tried 65 and 64 yard field goals at the end of the first half, which would have broken the NFL record at the time.

I remember seeing a 9/11 home video on RUclips a few years ago of a guy who survived the World Trade Center attacks because he was late for work having stayed up late the night before watching that game. He worked in one of the upper floors above the crash (where no one survived) and he was filming the explosions from his apartment window in Manhattan and he was saying incredulously, "Monday Night Football actually just saved my life".

    @taylorkingston1408 5 лет назад +8

I'm glad to see you found some footage of Steve O'Neal's all-time record 98-yard punt from 1969. I watched that game on TV. In terms of net yardage, that record cannot ever be broken, the ball going from one team's one-yard line to the other team's one-yard line. Too bad the end of the play was cut off in your video. Despite O'Neal's great punt, the Jets lost that game to the Denver Broncos. The Jets were defending Super Bowl champions and the Broncos were not very good back then, but they seemed to have a hex on the Jets.

I was in the stands for the 98-yd punt by Steve O'Neal in Denver. The ball was snapped on the one yard line and Billy Thompson tried to catch the ball over his head. He missed and the ball rolled all the way back to Denver's one yard line. What you don't see is how Thompson ran the ball back out close to the 40 because the winded Jets players in the high altitude had to run 70 yards downfield just to meet Thompson at his 30.

    • @91Redmist

    • @denisceballos9745

That play is posted as “Steve O’Neal, The Longest Punt in NFL History.” You can see Denver’s Bill Thompson (36) pick the ball up at the half- yard line, literally, after it rolled there and stopped. He only made it to about the three yard line before he was tackled by three Jets players. Although the Jets narrowly lost the game, Steve O’Neal’s punt is still the record and forever will be, since that lazy Sunday afternoon of Sept. 21, 1969.

I saw that Steve Oneal punt against the Broncos. I think I was in Junior high. Kicking from the south end of the stadium at the one yard line, he got a good bounce (for the Jets) and Billy Thompson, a ring of fame defensive back for the Broncos let it get by him. What you don't see is Thompson finally picking it up down about where i was sitting at the Broncos one yard line and getting dropped at the 2. 98 yard punt, 1 yard return. You can't flip the field a whole lot more than that. I remember thinking 98 gross and 97 net - those have to be records ... and they still are.

There are some discrepancies on early length records in the 1920's/30's. I read an article about it, the NFL did not keep such records at the time, and different newspaper accounts list varying lengths on those punts making the record book a bit murky.

That last punt, supposedly the longest one, deserves an asterisk. All of the other punts traveled the distance cited entirely on their own, even if they were bouncing along for the last 20-30 yards. But that last punt was muffed off of the receiver, and the impact on the player's body going backward catapulted it a lot further than it would have gone otherwise. Since it was a muff, the NFL still probably counts the yardage, but like I said, I'd put an asterisk on that record.

Canadian Football (3 not 4 downs) a d Rugby punters kick for ACCURACY aiming for the "coffin corners", the 5x5yd at each corner of the field. Ideally it bounces out of bounds at the 2 yd line. A good defence gets you a Safety and posession back.

Longest punt I've ever seen was in 1966 or 67 at the Raiders vs the Jets. Ray Guy was standing near the back line of the end zone when the snap went over his head for a safety.
While in a TV commercial Guy is standing on the Raiders 20yd line with a football punching the hell out it. He is way beyond pissed!!
Both teams line up for Guy's punt from the 20yd line. Ref blows his whistle and Guy doesn't move, he just stands there staring at the ball!!!
Finally he takes two steps and crushes his foot into the ball. BOOM!!! It looks as if the ball is traveling higher than the top of the stadium!
The receiver was waiting at his 30yd line. When he sees this missile sailing over his head he turns to watch it in disbelief! The ball doesn't land in the playing field, or the endzone!
IT HITS OUT OF THE ENDZONE AT THE WALL OF THE "BLACK HOLE" AND HOPS AT LEAST 10 ROWS UP IN THE STANDS!!!
People are stunned!! Then all of a sudden there are these cheers, and whistling, and thunderous applause for Ray Guy who walks off the field with his right hand in a fist about his head.
THAT BALL HAD TO GO AT LEAST A HUNDRED YARDS IN THE AIR!!!

Joe Lintzenich kicked one 94 yds for the Bears in 1931 also two guys on the Canton Bulldogs in 1920 (95 yds) and 1923 (94 yds) are the ones that are missing from the pre-film days. Also a rumor that Jim Thorpe actually kicked one 99 yds in 1923. But the NFL's recordkeeping wasn't too hot back then so there may have been others

I've always been confused about a stat in the NFL. Now I understand that they measure the yards starting at the line of scrimmage. I totally understand that. But, why don't they also make another stat in that category of where the yard is that punter actually plants his foot and punts the ball. Like, if the ball was set at the 7 yd line and I was standing in my own endzone, when i kicked the ball from the goal line to the next or even into the opposite endzone, I would want the credit to be on paper of a 100 yard+ kick next to the 93 yarder from the line of scrimmage. Same with QBs and running backs. A QB drops back how many yards and let's it fly?!? Or a running back get the ball handed to him 5 yards behind the line. They deserve those extra yards to be noticed, put on their stat sheets and their resumes. Am I wrong tho?! Who wouldn't want that credit for all of those extra yards to be noticed?!?
