Depends on what best means for fun i’d say 5.0, but for longevity and the best for beating on 4.6 2v I’ve seen a few Crown Vic’s hit 300k+ and not skip a beat. The 4.6 4v was so exotic at the time. I love the fact that the SN95 is finally getting some love.

I've seen many 4v above 200k and I saw one 96-98 well above 400k original engine. They're very stout. They can make as much hp fbo as a 2v does fbo and cammed probably slightly more and they Rev higher.

Back in '98, I built a 347 and it's still going today. In '03, I built a 3.8 for a '98 and put a supercharger on it. It's still going, and it's a daily driver. My other 2 '98's have the 3.8, 100% stock, and both still run with no issues. My '07 Gt has the 4.6, but I've had issues with the lash adjusters(lifters) going out often. In the past 10yrs, I've had several 3v 5.4 engines in various vehicles and feel those are some of the best engines despite all the bad advertising out there. The 3v with a simple timing set and oil changes keeps it going. It's more of a lack of maintenance for everyone who has issues with the 3v.
Of course, the only thing I've done to my 347 and 3.8 is regular oil changes. Here in Okla, I can't find any v8 engines in the salvage yards that are good anymore, and if they have them, they want an arm and leg.
My son and my brother both have coyote engines in their F150's. They run strong but seem to use oil with higher mileage just like the 2 and 3v does.
With me being a mechanic, I work on any and all manufacturers vehicles, and equipment. You name it, I've prob did it. Over the years, we've driven lots of vehicles and family seemed to buy all other brands just because I've went mainly all Ford. But the last few years, everyone in our family is now driving Fords. I'm talking brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, you name it, they all have Fords and occasional additional others. I've asked them why, and they say over the yrs they've had the least issues, been more reliable, and less cost driving them. Some say they now know why I drive Fords. Believe me, I use to drive a short wide chevy as my daily, and still have my s10, along with dozens of other domestic and import brands. But as far as reliability, cost, and looks, all my dailies are Fords.
I'm currently installing a 351w/408 in an '86 F150 4wd. It's been 3yrs in the making. $14k in the long block only. Fi and all the goodies. Hopefully, it'll live a long time, keeping my fingers crossed, lol.

Had transmission work done under warranty. Miss those 4 valve motors they ran awesome and delivered excellent mpg. Mark VIII was a fast luxury machine. Cobra was a nimble burnout machine and very reliable. Now running a 2010 GT500 with 5.4 4V supercharged and also a 2016 GT ragtop with 5.0 4V. Kit is unique for the Cobra, undercut impeller to limit boost because factory crap pistons. Only makes about 7lbs boost. Car has over 125k on it, runs like a dream yet. When tuned, it made 400RWHP on a Mustang dyno, tuner said on a Dynojet, would of been in the 450ish RWHP range as Mustang dynos read 10-15% lower than Dynojets.
I can't complain, car ran 12.20s @ 116mph full weight with a very easy launch, I drove car 100mi to track, didn't wanna break anything, had to get home...lol

What is wrong with a modular? Modular is easier to build power with than a 302. You don't need an aftermarket block to safely go above 500 or so at the tires. A b bead 4v with forged rods and pistons to go with the factory forged crank and teksid block you can make a ton of power with an otherwise stock engine including the heads and cams. Try that with stock block, heads and cam in a 302 and see how that works out. I love the pushrods but I love modular more. People are still sleeping on their potential today after 25+ years.

There is no denying the performance of the 4v is superior. I've been a tech for a long time and seen a lot of these 4v in all their different variations not be as reliable as the 2v. Not necessarily unreliable, but just doesn't take the beatings back to back like the 2v. That's really the only place the 2v can outshine the 4v. After that 4v is better in every way. The old school 5.0 is an iconic motor that is very capable no doubt, but the short powerband is a hinder in todays age of high revving engines and endless gear changing. With gears you acn make up for this till about 110-120 mph, after that its lights out for all these old platforms vs new ones imho.

It really don't cost that much honestly especially in comparison to other engines when they're built similar. Forged rods and pistons is all you need to make some pretty damn good power. They come with a forged crank in the cobras I know idk about the mark 8 but literally forged rods and pistons and you can make 700+ easily on otherwise stock engine with boost thrown on it. Especially if you do a high compression e85 build its super easy to hit 700+ forged rods and pistons can be had for like 1400 bucks. It's a slept on performance engine with tons of potential. You could even drop in some 03 cobra stuff like rods and pistons. I assume it would work fine with the teksid?

I’ve been owning a 96 cobra since late 2016 and have never had any real issues besides a little bit of over heating and my transmission breaking one time. So while that’s being said, my brother owns a 95 gt with the pushrod 5.0 that is now modded with a trick flow top end kit and vortech supercharger that you can see in my channel right now, but what I was able To tell between the two just by driving them is that the 95 gt is much lighter from the nose and makes it easier to corner. As far as power goes, I think the ford small block 302 is the better choice for an all motor build if you keep it under 500whp and if you’re looking for boost I think the 4.6 dohc is the better choice since all you have to do is swap out the pistons and rods, upgrade your fuel system and you’re ready for some serious power, while the pushrod 5.0 you’d have to get entire block from dart Which is not cheap at all considering you still have to buy the internals and machine the block etc….

96' Cobra owner here too. I recently replaced my a/c condenser. The existing condenser was likely 22 fins per square inch, whereas the replacement appears 16 & will definitely not restrict air flow as much as the old part.
My Cobra has not had the Ford TSB service performed for the cooling upgrade. I won't know the results of my effort until next summer, but I'm optimistic after pulling that old dense as hell condenser.
