Fun fact: That "insteresting approach" to RWY 09 is that steep not in order to avoid creating noise in Algeciras, but because planes inbound Gibraltar cannot enter Spanish airspace
You can actually go on a tour on the mountain. Theres caves inside it and there are holes for the cannons that used to be there which point strait at the runway. This means that you can see the runway from the mountain which is really cool!
I flew into Gibraltar last year and the landing was pretty smooth. Flew with easyJet from Luton Airport. Beautiful place to explore and go hiking. Flew back to Heathrow Airport with British Airways. The take off over the marina was pretty intense with the sharp left bank. Would highly recommend the trip just for the flight experience!
Great video. I've been in Gibraltar for many years. The airport is awesome. The new terminal offers a nice observation deck to watch the planes coming in. Plus you can obviously get great views from the rock, or on a boat out to sea. ( i have a video on my channel with a British Airways flight coming in as i was sailing out on a boat). Its built east/west due to the prevailing winds. But cross winds can be a problem when its blowing from the south west. The turbulence caused by the rock in this case is enough to flip a plane, hence why many flights get diverted to Malaga. Visibility can be bad too if sea fog rolls in, and there is no ILS. All approaches are visual. Airspace restrictions forbid flying over Spanish towns of Algeciras or la linea during take off and landing. Airlines running here are British Airways and Easyjet. (Monarch used to run too). Whizz Air is apparently coming next year. There's also a small airmaroc plane that flies to Tangier and Cassablanca. As well as number of private jets and charters coming in and out. There is thankfully more than just a traffic light to stop cars and people crossing the runway. There are physical barriers, spike strips and Gibraltar Defence Police (Military police) manning the barriers at both sides. They are building a tunnel but its been fraught with technical and contractual problems for many years, so no idea when we will finally see it open. Though to be honest, i'd be sad to see this unique highway crossing go. You should come visit Gibraltar when travel restrictions get better.!
Every time I fly in a plane the approach includes a 45° turn which to me is kinda cool tbh because I can look out the window directly to the ground from 1,000 ft up so yeah...
You are the best! I work at that airport I’m the one that sells tickets and sometimes I stay down in the road to make sure the gates work and people respect the rules
I live right next to the runway lol, I can look out of my window and see planes taking off around 100m from where I'm sitting, writing this comment. I walk across this runway to get to school every morning.
I was there last summer, it was incredible to cross the runway by foot after entering GIbraltar from Spain and just after crossing it the road was closed and an easyJet A320 took off after backtracking, it is a must-see
I’ve been there and it’s so cool to land at... i went on monarch air about a week before it went bankrupt (it’s also not normally that windy or cloudy - when I went it was about 32•C!!)
Once, a Vulcan bomber was forced to land here due to not enough fuel and a diversion even though the runway was not long enough on paper. It touched down on the blast pad and burst loads of tires from how hard the brakes were being pressed. He stopped on the other blast pad.
Road crossing runway ✔mountains beside airport in a dangerous place✔soccer pitch beside runway ✔and last but not least dangerous place to have a early touch down with plane and very dangerous overrun ✔✔✔✔✔✔✔✔🥴🥴🥴I think the airport is........ WAY TO DANGEROUS TO BE ASSESSED TO ANYONE
City planner: Here me out guys... what if we build ON the runway? Everyone else: Your a crazy man... I LIKE IT! BUILD IT! Pilots: **whispers** What about a tunnel?
Do Tagbilaran Airport (Old) it is located on the island of Bohol which is in the Philippines. It closed down because there was a new airport and that the runway is kinda short only like for A320's and also it is in the middle of the city so yeah. If you want more information just click here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagbilaran_Airport.
hey Swiss001, hope your staying safe, i have a suggestion, would you consider trying to land big planes at, "Juancho E Yrausquin Airport, Saba or (airport code: SAB)" This is the shortest runway in the world and i would like to see some big planes try to land here! Thanks! Stay safe like so he can see
Well, there are other factors that make this airport DANGEROUS. One, a wind phenomenon known as the Levanter. This wind comes from going over the Rock of Gibraltar and robs pilots of airspeed on the final approach and grabs the plane and tries to flip it over. 2. There is a No-Fly Zone that pilots must steer clear of or risk getting intercepted and shot down.
Zadar airport in Croatia was once the weirdest : Road crossing the runway , Military airport section with figter jets , Firefighting squadron with canadairs and air tractors , and normal passenger terminal all in the same airport...
I have a big question, let’s say there is a runway that is about 2,000 feet from the ground. If a big plane takes off from the strip, and over run it, would it glide then get enough power to climb? Please like so Swiss can see, don’t need to, but a favor to a friend from another one.
The reason the people clapped after the butter landing was because Swiss actually landed a plane without overrunning since he is famous for using big planes on small runways...

It’s a very unique airport. And drivers need patience if they want to cross the border since they close the road for such a long time for planes
