8:00 classic Jack misunderstanding. The second slide showed the percentage of people that thought the colonies were better off due to colonisation, not the occupying country
Which is such an impossible question to answer, I don’t know how anyone could confidently say yes or no.
i definitly think it helped development.
@@laurenceharakis nah the british took 45 trillion dollars out of India... definitely in that case it did not help... famines killed millions of people... there were massacres... just wish they taught a less biased version of history in the UK

@@laurenceharakisthe british empire went in and stole tons of natural resources and SLAVES and killed the native populations of the Americas from their colonization efforts. Yeah, India might have roads now but it’s also in a worse off position for their own citizens than it would have been had the British just left them the fuck alone lol. And also the arbitrary border between Pakistan and India drawn by the British has resulted in a STILL ONGOING war between the countries.
8:48 I believe the reason why France is shown as having so many more venomous animal species than the rest of Europe is because its overseas departments are included. Most of the venomous animals in France are probably only found in, say, French Guiana. Mainland France probably doesn't have any more venomous animals than its neighbours.
a bit late, but in France we are told since childhood to be carefull in tall grass because of venomous snakes, and check insects bites and all. As a French person I was more surprised that Spain was green.

The most common family name is "Wang." The most common given name is "Muhammad." But you never meet anyone named Muhammad Wang.
That’s because the name Wang is Asian and Muhammad is Middle Eastern
Edit: Yes, I know the Middle East is in Asia geographically, but culturally, it’s different from Eastern Asia
@@jluby09 I obviously know that, but it doesn't mean there can't be any given the dominance of each name. You would think you'd come across one at least once, especially with the desire of Asian immigrant parents wanting to give their newborns "American" first names.

Muhammad Wang would be weird because Wang in Malaysia is Money but Wang can also be called Duit in Malay

Fun fact, Indonesians don’t really have or use last name! We mostly use one word name and Sari is one of the most common names. Sari’s name would just be Sari, no middle name or last name, just Sari.
But for some regions, like Bali, they put their family name at the front unlike some places that use (name) (family name), those places use (family name) (name) which I found very interesting.
the way jack says gonzalez hurts

Hi Jack, as a Jew myself the reason Judaism is still one of the big five religions is because it was the first monotheistic religion; meaning the first religion to believe there is only one god. Both Christianity and Islam branched off Judaism (Jesus was Jewish btw). There aren’t many Jews left because it’s a bloodline religion and most of us have been killed off
Very nice info thank you! Might use this for our new CLE lesson but who knows😊

8:10 the uk was in a good financial position because it exploited its colonies, the question is whether or not the colonies themselves were better off because they were colonized and the answer is an easy no if you know anything about british history. The uk profited off their suffering.

The reason most presidents were born towards the east is because for about 60-80 years worth of presidents, the west wasn't a thing, and then for the next 50+, the West was essentially a bunch of badlands. Not many presidents coming from there.
The reason there are 4 from the same area in Massachusetts is because 2 of them were related and for the ones born in the last 100 years, their families were there cause they're rich.
Re; 6:25 Jewish population map - note that I'm not a historian so I might be a little off on the margins here, but there are several reasons that the European Jewish population is lower.
One is, yes, the Holocaust. That is really the #1 factor. It's estimated that only in the last ten years has the *global* Jewish population come back to its pre-Holocaust levels. Considering that the Holocaust affected European Jews almost exclusively, it makes sense that Europe would be the last region to see its numbers recover.
But also, Israel exists. Whenever there is any kind of social or humanitarian crisis, there are good odds that a chunk of the Jewish population in the affected region will just say "screw this, we're better off leaving," which is an option that probably wouldn't exist without Israel as a landing spot. Possibly the greatest case in point for this is that in the year after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Israel saw something like a million immigrants from Eastern Europe.
There's also, more specifically, been a general and steady rise of anti-semitism throughout Europe in the last few decades. This is best personified in the UK with Jeremy Corbyn's fall from grace, but other examples exist throughout the continent. So even in areas without social or humanitarian crises, European Jews may leave their home country because, well, we know what happens when you wait too long. Which I suppose feeds back into reason #1.
I do want to point out that France appears to be the only country with an increase in Jewish population between the two maps, and I'll speculate on why: In the 40's, 50's, and 60's, Jews started emigrating from Muslim-majority countries en masse, due to increasing violence against Jews in those regions. In most cases, the easiest landing spot was Israel (see reason #2), but if you lived in Algeria or Tunisia, both controlled by France at the time of Israeli independence, a lot of times your easiest landing spot was France, instead. There is a very large North African Jewish population in France today, because of that, which didn't exist pre-WWII.
Anyway, I hope someone found this interesting and worth the read.
7:14 YLE in Finland as a news source is very reliable. And this is not coming from someone having worked there 2014-2020 necessarily, objectively the transparency is excellent.
9:22 the reason for Chile to probably not have many venomous animals is due to the very high mountains that span through the country.
Jack is the type of guy to need a new comment section asap

2:30 .. he knew KSI's song before it even came out
1:51 American here, not sure if you were wondering about the odds of the presidents being born in Massachusetts, or just mostly the east in general, but I have an answer for the latter. The VAST majority of Americans live on the east half of the U.S.A., so statistically more people there will raise the chances of a potential president. Sorry if this was obvious and unnecessary, but I hope it helped!
Also, two of the Massachusetts presidents were father and son, so it makes sense that they’d be born in the same place
We should also point out that the US hasn't always been as expansive as it is today, and many of those states west of the Appalachians didn't exist until the 1830's and beyond. Not to mention that little ah... spat we had in the mid-late 1800s. The states involved had to rewrite their constitution before being allowed back into the union.
Funfact: The word 'Tajik' and 'Deutsch' both evolved from the same word, with Stan being land so technically Tajikistan and Deutschland have kinda the same name
any sources on that? something doesn't add up there. Even just some logic as to why German and tajik could be linked in any way
@sepbasdav I know deutsch means low, so maybe somewhere when pie split off a word for low sounded the same in both languages
@@killianobrien2007 that's an alright answer but to be honest I asked ikhebd.... Screw that, not you

@@ZTimeGamingYT well hello there
the around 4000 spanic and portuguesse words with an arabic origin comes from a time in the early middle ages when almost all of the iberian peninsula was conquered by an arabic califate. From then, through almost 800 years (711-1492), the peninsula was at war between the christian kingdoms in the north, and the islamic conquered territories in the south. With such a long time to brew, it's not a surprise that we have so many arabianborn words in Spain and Portugal.

"Wang" for China is definitely incorrect.
"Li" is china's most common surname, and the most common in the world.
"Wang" has been misattributed as the most common because the Romanized version of multiple separate surnames are often lumped together.
Just by the drawing of Castle Rising (that I'd never seen before) I could tell it was built by Normans x)
I'm from Normandy and I knew some of the more famous monuments in the UK were built by Normans (Windsor Castle, The Tower of London, parts of St Paul's Cathedral, etc.) but there are so many more.
The influence of Normandy in the UK, Ireland and other parts of the world (hi Italy) is much greater than I ever thought.
As Indonesian, idk if we were better off because WWII collonozation. A lot of people who aren't from collonized countries believe that the collony was just for spice trade but mostly what happened were just a lot of slavery and massacres. This is probably because their countries don't really wanna teach their kids about the crimes they did (which... sucks but I can see why)
Sure we got like a handful of infrastructures like damns and roads, but it didnt justify 350 years of cruelty.
I learned a lot about colonization last year, during my global political science course in university, here in Canada. I definitely learned small bits here and there prior to that, but I was shocked at just how much of an impact it actually had. Definitely a lot worse than most people here think. It's really awful what colonizers did, and how they tried to justify it. The impacts still linger today and likely will for decades more, if not centuries. It's a really important part of history and I wish more people were taught it, and that more people understood it.
