He's really improved his sound over the years. I remember seeing him demo his gear and it sounded awesome on it's own but his tone had almost zero mids and very little definition. The number of the beast bootleg is an excellent example of that. I think he's reached the perfect balacing point between tightness and definition in his tone.
well its a major third in a minor pentatonic context as far as i hear. its atonal, but it gives a bluesy feel. this 3rd is used alot by SRV, so it was probably intentionnal.
How does John use the same channel on his mark iv to play both rhythm and lead sounds? How dose he get the volume boost and eq change? I think he says that he runs the two mark iv's in stereo,
With all the endorsements JP has, I'm sure he isn't spending a ton on his gear. He's been one of Boogie's main endorsers for 20 years now, so I'm sure they just send him stuff all the time.
Oh definitely. He's not the sort of guy who'd compromise his tone just for the sake of a pretty endorsement. Bummer that they stopped making the Mark IVs though
is he using an overdrive pedal for his lead sound, because his rythm sound is already set on the channel three? i was just wondering, if someone could clarify that for me. Thanks
I have no idea to be honest, I just read it on the Mesa website. Their whole thing is that the players endorse the products because they really think they're great amps, or something like that. Not like Marshall, who pay people so much even Zakk Wylde is saying that the MGs are good amps.
it means that nobody's perfect, i even had a live Cd of Steve vai playing crying machine, and he made mistake, on the melody part... but he is still one of the best guitarist that ever live....
Mesa artists may not get everything for free, but I'm sure they get some stuff for free. Another thing, they get to try out prototypes on the road and all that, I'd call that a perk.
I think you are wrong. JP plays his solos perfectly, go to watch Dream Theater show and watch his body and face. yes, he is focused, but he doesn't need to struggle with anything
can anybody help me?? the goddamn pedal board he have on the ground with his presets in it does it turn the pedals in the rack on and off?? i mean if i want to use a distorion+delay+flanger i just save it as a preset and when i call it back that goddamn shit turns them all on??
That lines in the sand tone is the biggest fucking tone I've ever heard. I can get a similar tone with my Mark IV setup with the Nova Delay, but the chorus doesn't sound as good as the 2290.
im not gonna answer you if you dont know how to talk like a civilized human that being said, thats right, its set up so that all the pedals are in individual loops, and he can switch those loops on and off. it does not actually turn the pedal on/off though. and he uses his amp distortion.
Nexts gear video that Petrucci is gona make im sure that hes gona purchase an R2D2 or mabye even call George Lucas to create something to help him with that monster rig !
Not as far as I can tell...sounds like he's just playing chords that sound similar to DT material (The one that sounded most similar to me was In The Name Of God, but not even)
Just love petrucci's efx.
His distorted sounds are always tight and poweful.
Sounds infinitely better than the current rig.
he sure has a taste of good sound..
love how he sounds
Excellent. One of the all time best.
God i love this man! Petrucci is your new god!
Ha. Awesome
a hidden gem
I love mesa boogie's clean channel. Andy Timmons does a pretty job with it too!
fark.... he blows my mind so much... god he is the Best! far out! and always willing to help explain how he gets his sound =) such a good bloke too!

wow i like the chorus with comp and delay!!!
that rig is amazing, i want one!
we have to remember that the tubes you put in mesa amps greatly affects the tone.
I can understand him so well!
I'm not a huge fan of Petrucci, but I find these 2 videos really interesting, thanks!
Man every time I see new footage of Petrucci he seems to be even more cut that before. The guy must be doing some serious lifting now. :o
Perfect rhytm tone:D
well its a major third in a minor pentatonic context as far as i hear. its atonal, but it gives a bluesy feel. this 3rd is used alot by SRV, so it was probably intentionnal.
im glad hes using mark IV's again, idk why he ever went to roadkinds :S
@SiiKenedFate It's saying at 5.08 "the man" "man" and at 6.33 "weekend" I don't know if his guitar wants a little brake...
He's playing "In The Presence Of Enemies, Part I" in the beginning of the interview.
How does John use the same channel on his mark iv to play both rhythm and lead sounds? How dose he get the volume boost and eq change? I think he says that he runs the two mark iv's in stereo,
gotta love the mark iv's
@Dopaminergie
he uses an eventide timefactor. expensive pedal but good sounding!
With all the endorsements JP has, I'm sure he isn't spending a ton on his gear. He's been one of Boogie's main endorsers for 20 years now, so I'm sure they just send him stuff all the time.

yes,hes got a zakk wylde overdrive!!(he showed it in th video)
Petrucci is built! Holy shit!
finally on the tube, thx a lot, BTW How did you download it from the mesa site, because i couldn't figure out how to do it, thanks a bunch :)
You have a grat sound!!!
MESA Endorsee. He is From Long Island NY
Dream Theatre rocked Toronto this summer with Iron Maiden.
is he using an overdrive pedal for his lead sound, because his rythm sound is already set on the channel three? i was just wondering, if someone could clarify that for me.
Thanks
anyone know why he changed from Mark IIC+s to Mark IVs? (didn't he?)
it's guitar. I tried a mm jp bfr through a shitty b-52 combo and i sounded like petrucci (not exactly of course) but guitar is the main thing here
Pretty funny to say that about the Best Guitarsound ever
at 0.17 Petrucci in sit down and have a Ibanez jpm100, but what colour is that?
@lavalamp360
he can put his feet up if he plays solo's and that kinda stuff
I have no idea to be honest, I just read it on the Mesa website. Their whole thing is that the players endorse the products because they really think they're great amps, or something like that.
Not like Marshall, who pay people so much even Zakk Wylde is saying that the MGs are good amps.
i have to agree with you on this one.
his sound is good with the band though - it just doesn't sound good by himself.
it means that nobody's perfect, i even had a live Cd of Steve vai playing crying machine, and he made mistake, on the melody part... but he is still one of the best guitarist that ever live....
anyone know what those metal blocks on the sides of his pedalboard are and what their for?
actually he is right at 5:33 he was off-note
he is still awesome =P
holy shit he has really buffed up since his G3 recording back in Tokyo...'04 was it? I forgot...but dang, stop getting so big Petrucci!
HOLY SHIT HES GOTTEN BUFF, HIS ARMS ARE LIKE, AND I QUOTE "BOOM" lol
i hope he has noise suppressor pedal for all that effects
how the fuck is he harnessing those guitar powers so easily!!!.. ahhhhh!!..
Mesa artists may not get everything for free, but I'm sure they get some stuff for free. Another thing, they get to try out prototypes on the road and all that, I'd call that a perk.
I think you are wrong. JP plays his solos perfectly, go to watch Dream Theater show and watch his body and face. yes, he is focused, but he doesn't need to struggle with anything
does anyone else notice that his mark iv settings on his website sound nothing like this?
He's the Heavy Metal Jesus!
can anybody help me??
the goddamn pedal board he have on the ground with his presets in it does it turn the pedals in the rack on and off??
i mean if i want to use a distorion+delay+flanger i just save it as a preset and when i call it back that goddamn shit turns them all on??
he is wild!!!!
in which song is the solo he plays at the beggining ?? ITS DESPERATING! I DONT COME TO WHICH SONG IT IS
ok thanxx!!!
Watch me getting all those sounds with just a fender frontman 15 and a v-amp2 (i wish i could)
tnx :)
i have a roadster, how do i get that sounds where he plays the open chords and it sounds not like shit lol
3:47 is that from take the time song?
Dam , he is jacked out!
does he use stock tubes?
Low volume is the reason why it would sound bad. That and maybe if you are running it through bad speakers.
@davemustaine999 / When I hit this bvutton and play 32nd notes I go back in time!
so its like he has the convinience of a multi-fx processor, but it's sounds better.
anybody knows what those big silver boxes are?
That lines in the sand tone is the biggest fucking tone I've ever heard. I can get a similar tone with my Mark IV setup with the Nova Delay, but the chorus doesn't sound as good as the 2290.
Jesus christ he is huge!!!
In the presence of enemies. It's off systematic chaos.
fair enough
thanks all
im not gonna answer you if you dont know how to talk like a civilized human
that being said, thats right, its set up so that all the pedals are in individual loops, and he can switch those loops on and off. it does not actually turn the pedal on/off though. and he uses his amp distortion.
Not saying your wrong, but why would anyone say they are an endorsee if there are no perks?
I love the transcribed audio here :D
7:25 "...and the chorus is coming from the 22-90 ... in Iraq."
rofl
awesome, adam02 should redo it. :-)
most similar song would be beyond this life I think
better lead sound of everyone
That's indeed the only possible explication
which song is he playing at 2:13?
That's saying a lot if he has a zakk wylde pedal
footrests... he explains it in some other video...
Wonder if he ever misses a switch.
I didnt know ron Jeremy played guitar?
this is weird seeing him this buff.
agreed
Nexts gear video that Petrucci is gona make im sure that hes gona purchase an R2D2 or mabye even call George Lucas to create something to help him with that monster rig !
4:22??? its a song fros DT??? if it is ! teell me
Its all how you use it and what you use it for.
damn
he became big ^^
in the presence of enemies pt.1 from systematic chaos
Is that Lou Ferrigno with long hair?
damn!
petrucci is getting bigger and bigger
everytime i see him.
Bloody hell, exit Petrucci and enter BEARTRUCCI... RAWRGHRAWRGHARGH!
Ah, the guitar player's logic :p
Sadly, I agree.
not hearing an off note there...
you know, you don't have to be on steroids to get jacked as hell...
some people just have the balls to actually exercise...
that's a pity because i wanted to marry him because of his skills with technic guitars.
6:20 sounds like Eric Johnson's tone
I think that he use his channel three of his second Mark IV (at video, @ 2009 tour he use Mark V), 'coz it's better ;]
Petrucci's fucking ripped :0
Not as far as I can tell...sounds like he's just playing chords that sound similar to DT material (The one that sounded most similar to me was In The Name Of God, but not even)
how the hell did john get so big, like you see him in pictures he's either skinny or he's big as hell
